Has anyone else got a big SureStart childrens' centre near them? I have just been to a baby massage class at our local centre which I had never been to before. It was amazing. They gave me a brochure full of the classes that they run and I will never be bored again. There is toddler cooking, rhyme time, toddler gym and a drop-in playgroup for DD1. For DD2 there is baby massage, baby signing and baby singing. For me there are all sorts of parenting classes such as "How to manage toddler tantrums", hopefully I will never feel the need to go to such a talk, but its great that it is there. And best of all it is all free and in a sparkly new centre.

Massage was lovely. It was lovely just taking an hour to look at DD2 and get to know her. She was all naked and oily and loving her massage. I would really recommend baby massage to anyone.

EffiePerine · 19/02/2009 16:28

arti: we have loads of sure start stuff and it's great! I tend to go to the toddler stuff as my main aim is keeping DS1 amused

LadyThompson · 19/02/2009 17:07

Wow Arti, that sounds fab! But I know there won't be anything like that round here Maybe I could take her to one in London or something. I will look at their website (assuming they have one).

rosmerta · 19/02/2009 17:18

arti that sounds great, will have a look and see if there's anything near me!

Veggiemummy · 19/02/2009 18:31

There is not as much here sure start wise as there was were I lived in London. The advantage of living in 'deprived' area tower hamlets was all the free kids stuff. Ironically non of the mums I met at the groups were deprived they were all mums like me who were expats from somewhere or another who had no family so went to these things in lieu of GPs to keep them entertained.

Ds2 is tucked up asleep already we just got back from London and he was so happy to have his usual bath and his own cot that he settled straight to sleep. For the past 3 nights he has washed in the hand basin at the hotel and slept in with us.

Effie I'm sorry I had to giggle at the wood stack incident I can't believe I missed it. I have to say I did enjoy not having to imitate an octopus ie eat my lunch settle ds2 and stop ds1 dancing on neighbouring tables.

jumpjockey · 19/02/2009 21:00

Evening all

Yesterday went pretty well in the end, my work meeting was really interesting (well as interesting as discussions about library services can be ) and great to catch up with friends, and I managed to get a hair cut in the afternoon Had a bit of a cry on DH after his 'is this a game' comment, and another one after he got her to sleep just by lying her down on our bed he thinks it's beginners luck... But overall I feel a lot better for having had a bit of time out - came back to dd all refreshed. He's off at choir tonight and she's asleep so I've got a trashy novel, box of valentine's chocs and glass of cheerfulness to keep me company

LadyT hope O is feeling a bit better after her jabs [hug for O] That skydiving practice sounds brilliant! DH and I did a 15,000ft jump on honeymoon in NZ, it was absolutely amazing (even if my eardrum popped and didn't mend for a week after...!)

arti We have a sure start sort of centre, they have a lot of groups for new mums but nothing like that, sounds absolutely brilliant and the massage sounds lovely.

veggie love the idea of you washing ds in the hotel sink my top is an old one, I reckon you could get much the same effect by taking a dark top and letting J vom milk all over it (for those that didn't see, it's dark with a kind of random white pattern!)

kmp sorry you had a rough time, totally not your fault though as if you'd have known B was having problems with the bottle you'd have gone home to feed. Grrr to insensitive ILs.

sybil hurrah for your friend, beating breast cancer twice over. Sounds like you had a lovely lunch - and hope the nail painting went well!

Verso · 19/02/2009 21:36

Just had to say - DD2 did her first proper giggle tonight. A real, proper laugh. I LOVE baby laughs! Makes it all worth it. >sigh

kayzr · 19/02/2009 22:07

Sorry I've not been around. I hope everyone is ok.

I've got my knee x-ray tomorrow so hoping that it will be nothing serious.

I've been setting up my charity fundraising page. I have 1 year and 4 months to raise £950 and to get fit enough so doing the 3 peaks doesn't kill me. So another reason why I need my knee to be in tip top shape. Someone I know who has done a lot of fundraising has suggested writing to celebrities. I'm not sure about it but tempted to contact some of the Arsenal players. At least I might get a few autographs!!

I'll pop on in the morning to catch up!

Night.

Kayz that has been a long time to wait for the xray.

Make sure you post a link here to the website for the fundraising as soon as it's up and ready. I know how hard fundraising can be, it's as difficult as the training.

Arti that was interesting what you said about the bf and dieting. Ds1 started demanding milk every 2 hours when he was 4 months. He went from 2 feeds overnight to feeding every 2 hours overnight. It was around the same time I started training for the triathlon season so I wonder if that was why.

waitinggirl · 19/02/2009 23:25

just tried the plastic sucking machine for the first time - moooooooo!

Veggiemummy · 19/02/2009 23:51

Oh WG you have to use it in front of your MIL

kmp1 · 20/02/2009 09:02

Arti / Veggie I can't find your post about bf and diet / exercise? Interesting though, as ds has gone quite weird since I started using the x-trainer and not eating desserts!
feeding little but often - very annoying. Also just last 24 hrs - no poo but i am expecting an explosion! Well we had planned to get on a plane for LA today but I flipped out at dh and decided due to his lack of communication (always)and his lack of organisation, i wasn't going to manage leaving until at least Saturday. I'm also pissed that he wants to take the bike so far for just 7 days which will mean he'll be on it for most mornings and that's hardly a family holiday! We'll see.
Arti which sure start centre is that? You aren't far from me so I'd be interested to go!

kayzr · 20/02/2009 09:34

Morning,

We had the night from hell here. We went to bed at 11 and DS2 dropped of straight away. YAY we thought, not the usual struggle to get him to sleep. Half 12 DS1 woke up screaming his head off and he came running into our room. He climbed in our bed, cuddled up to DH and asked for some milk. So I went to get him some milk. Then DS2 woke up at 2 so again I went downstairs to get him a bottle and managed to get DS1 to go back to his bed. Finally got DS2 to go back to sleep at 3 to then be woken up at 10 to 6.
We both feel shattered and I have a long walk this afternoon to the hospital for my x-ray. Luckily Mum's office is in the same town as the hospital so I only need to pay for one bus fare to Malton.

I have some sort of irrational fear of x-rays. I have only had 1 and that was when I was a toddler and I had eaten the metal end of a fabric tape measure. I don't remember it at all. I doubt it is anything to worry about but I am quite scared.

OP posts:
Veggiemummy · 20/02/2009 09:52

Kmp it may have been on the weight loss thread actually but Arti said that she found her LC got hungrier when she tried dieting.

Kayz are you ok to walk with a sore leg? Why do you have to go so far for an xray that's terrible. You poor thing about the fear thing. Is someone going with you? Xray rooms can be quite scary places for toddlers as they are usually dark and the noise of the machine can be spooky, so that is probably why you feel the way you do as a hang over from how you felt when you had that initial xray as a child.

kayzr · 20/02/2009 10:04

Its the closest hospital to us. There isn't a bus to the hospital either. So I have to get a bus to Malton and then walk to the hospital and then walk to mums office. Which is only a short walk. But the walk from the bus station to the hospital is a bit long. No one can go with me GP said it was ok to walk on it as usual. But I have finished the tablets he has given me and it is still hurting.

LadyThompson · 20/02/2009 10:09

Gosh KMP, you do short notice holidays. I am envious, even thought the bike is going too. How long are you going for?

A lady we don't know has pitched up on the fatties thread. I have absolutely no objection to being friendly and her just joining in, but it does seem a little odd because it's a thread where we all know each other. Hmm. Poor girl. But I'm not sure I fancy discussing my battle of the bulge with a complete stranger in this instance but I think it would be worse to intimate this. Thoughts anyone?

OOh, meant to say to Syb, thanks so much for kind offer of pop up bed for travel but as a matter of fact I have been trying to purchase one for use when I am in London. Where did you get yours from? Mamas and Papas used to sell them but they seem to have been discontinued.

Jump - honeymoon in NZ! How fab.

I am just not getting any proper written work done. AND the flat is continually a mess, I am just firefighting all the time and skimming the worst off the top as it's all I can do to keep on top of washing, bottles etc. I have to get some stuff done at the weekend but DP has got a lot to do so something's got to give, and as his is for a trial next week I know it will inevitably be me that does the household and baby stuff. Hmm. Must get more organised....

LadyThompson · 20/02/2009 10:12

Kayz, so sorry, cross posted as I took ages to write that as I was feeding DD. What a shame! There's nothing worse than a grotty night like that when you've got to do something, and that walk sounds most painful! I hope it goes ok - do let us know.

LadyThompson · 20/02/2009 10:22

I've just read that lady's post on the fatties thread and she sounds so hopeful I don't think we can really tell her that we all know each other. Unless I have a very DENYING weekend I don't think I am going to have lost any this week anyway as I haven't exercised for two days and there was too much cheerfulness the other night. And a dinner party tonight in Northampton, which means we have to stay over. Not in the mood (for the staying over or for eating food which is bound to be hugely calorific).

I am waiting for some new clothes from Boden for a big treat. Most of my clothes are maternity ones and they look a bit shabby so I just had to sort myself out. My usual wardrobe is in London but I am far too fat for most of that anyway. So I have had to buy big clothes, but I thought I'd bite the bullet (and the bank manager) and buy some nice ones. Which is naughty. Further to yesterday, any keen drivers managing with one car between you and your DH/P?

kmp1 · 20/02/2009 11:29

Veggie Haven't really been "dieting" but rather watching what I eat and not eating crap! I would say I have increased the cheerfulness consumption though, and tend to express a full bottle in the mornings so i can par take at my leisure in the evening!Lady yeah, I have been in the airline industry for 10 years now and am so use to using planes like they are buses! A little more involved with a baby to get organised but hopefully it won't prove too much trouble!
I need one of those pop up travel cots too. I was looking at the Samsonite one? I have one of those sleep positioner wedge pillow things which he can't roll when he's in so I may just use that on a couple of blankets or something on the floor or in the bed with us although with H's jet lag issues he may sleep too heavily which could be a worry if he's in with us! Anyway, good news is, I will be online over there so will report in!

EffiePerine · 20/02/2009 12:50

kmp: the Samsonite pop up cots are really good for travelling. Small, light and dead easy to put up

Kayz: good luck for the x-ray

rosmerta · 20/02/2009 13:33

kmp - am of your trip. Have fun!

Kayz - what a horribly journey for you to have on top of your grotty night, hope the xray goes ok.

effie - how did your day go yesterday?

Ladyt - I know how you feel about the housework, its the same here. Everything just gets piled up on the table and never sorted! Plus we've got our mouse problem again which just makes me feel worse.

Its nice to finally have some sun, we're off out a bit later so ds1 can see his best friend!

EffiePerine · 20/02/2009 13:41

well, DS2's routine seems to be sleep all morning (with a brief wake-up at 11 for more milk, awake lunchtime, doze early afternoon then awake and feeding all evening...

had a nice day though, didn;t try to do much else other than feeding Max and self .

LadyThompson · 20/02/2009 15:00

Rosmerta - re: mice - DP bought me one of those plug in mouse scarers that emits a wave or a sound they don't like. He found me a special industrial one (!) and I think - I THINK because I don't stay over in London often enough - it cleared them out. I feel your pain though. Mice in the house is so depressing. I've got loads of spiders here instead...

rosmerta · 20/02/2009 15:14

Thanks ladyt, I think we'll try that. We've put down poison which they eat & yet they're still here!

Effie, sounds like a lovely day. I have been known to go back to bed with ds2 when ds1 has gone to nursery!

kmp1 · 20/02/2009 15:45

Effie That is my ds's exact routine too! I was worried since he is so sleepy all morning but I've also heard that's normal? I can't seem to get him down for the night any earlier than 10pm though - but he sleeps until 6 or 7. I was wondering if being in the USA for a week will be aproblem with his sleep routine when I get back? I am assuming I just put him asleep at 10pm over there? I assume he will be old enough to work out the day / night thing soone enough? it will be interesting... I might google it!
