Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Snap flf madam was an angel in town yesterday, went down in her crib with none of the usual gripiness and fussing at bed time, but then proceeded to feed every 2 to 2 and a half all night! So much for her usual 5 hr then 3-4hr night stretches.

Have expressed a bottle this morning for DH to give her the 10.30ish feed tonight so I can get to bed early. Feeling really washed out and exhausted Mum reckons I'm so pale I must be anaemic again and have to say it does feel that way. Also got a cold with a killer sore throat which has made me lose my voice.

dog sounds like a lovely first day together as a family. Long may it continue. You have my sympathy on the afterpains though, must be third babies, mine were agonising too, but only lasted for 4 days. Try taking paracetamol half an hour before a feed, it helps take the edge off them.

Am also typing one handed so scuse any mistakes.

StarbucksAddict · 12/02/2009 13:50

dog wow, sounds like a very lovely day. Motherhood is turning me into a forgetful moo, I can't even remember our first day home with V as I was so exhausted.

Birth story? Here goes...

Valentina was actually due on 14 January, which is DH's birthday. I was early, both sisters were early, DH was early, both his sisters and both his brothers were early, so we were expecting her to come much before. I packed my hospital bag before Christmas and received lots of lovely newborn girly stuff that I was really looking forward to putting her in.

For some reason, my third trimester was my worst, I was extremely tired and grouchy all the time, the mood swings were horrendous although I thought they were supposed to even out by that time. I asked doctor about it (probably in a threatening way as he looked a little scared) and he said nothing to worry about. Made DH sleep on the sofa the last week of pregnancy for various reasons (i.e. buggy drama, he grazed my foot in the night, I got too hot in the bed, etc. etc.)

So January 14th I am fuming because DD has not arrived. Poo! I am big as a house, sweaty even when the house is cool and windows are open, hungry all the time, and generally not very happy. VERY ready to be over being pregnant! I left it a few more days and called midwife, who said to try all the 'normal' things like curry, sex, long walks, massages, baths, etc. Nothing helped so I saw midwife 1 week after due date. She assessed baby and said she wasn't in any distress and didn't seem very big so it would be fine to let her come in her own time.

Night of 30th Jan, about 8pm I felt some twinges, had DH rush me to hospital who promptly sent me back home at 1cm dilated. Cue lots of impatient huffiness, foot rubs by DH, and excuses to eat lots of Ben & Jerry's . The waiting was the worst bit, contractions didn't seem to bother me at all [smug emoticon?]

I managed to go to sleep some during the night and when I woke up at 4.45 they were intense and close together, we timed it at about 3 minutes so apart we went back to hospital (Chelsea & Westminster) to be told I was 9cm dilated and nearly ready to push! There was no time to get TENS out (forgot it was even in the bag ) or have any pethedine or epidural or anything. So I pushed to high heaven, Valentina was massive and I had a second degree tear (midwife said she was impressed it wasn't third degree ) which was actually the most painful thing in the entire birth process. They put her on my chest and I thought, 'She isn't newborn, she's already a month old!' She was 9 lb 8 oz, and 23 inches long, had the pleasure of being the biggest baby born at C&W this year so far . We opted to stay in overnight rather than go home straight away, more so I could rest from the tear than anything else.

For the first 36-ish hours she didn't feed, just did some smelling and licking on the nipple, getting used to breastfeeding has been very hard, I thought it would come naturally but it really hasn't so I haven't felt too bad about topping up with formula and when she doesn't seem to be getting enough breastmilk anymore I won't feel guilty about switching her on to formula full time. We all had it and turned out okay, surely?

Okay, sorry that was so long-winded!

fymmumoftwo · 12/02/2009 14:22

bugaboo are good BUT quite heavy,

if you buy secondhand you can get a new set of coloured covers which solves your worries about

pros - great suspension, solid, adaptable, goes over any ground, lovely for walking with (eg to local shps),comfy for baby

cons - pram only lasts until 4 months ish (and uses same frame as pushchair so once you change it iver its hard to change back), heavy for car trips,

we've ended up with a bugaboo AND a mclaren - I'm not sure any buggy is ideal!

Great birth story SBA. Dog I was just thinking how amazingly together you are sounding, sure I was a lot less coherent at your stage. DS1 and 2 were a bit full on for a while and DS1 still is a bit. He wants Elizabeth to constantly hold his finger and always wants to be stroking her head and talking to her etc, which is great until she gets crotchety with him and I have to be really firm to get him to leave her alone. (He still runs a mile every time she has a nappy change though! )

On the other hand, the boys have been in trouble 3 times for actual physical fighting, which is a new one on me. They have been caught fighting several times over the past few days and now I have had to resort to taking away one of their funkeys (computer game plug-ins) every time they fight and have told them they won't get them back until I am satisfied that they have stopped being so horrible to each other and if I get as far as taking them all away then they won't be getting them back!

fymmumoftwo · 12/02/2009 20:55

Have finally got round to posting my birth story

here

dog congratulations!!! Did you get the hypnotherepy CD in time??? or like me did you just listen to pat of it!

StarbucksAddict · 12/02/2009 21:10

dog Isla was our absolutely number one choice. But then she came out and she just wasn't an Isla, lol. I will be very if you choose it ;) We are planning to keep it for 2nd DD if we ever have one (doubtful at this point due to amount of sleep.)

dog GP receptionists are ALWAYS mardy, must be in the job description. they are madly protective of the drs, ime.. you can ask what the policy is on home visits. in your shoes, I'd request one, say I'm too sore - they can't expect mothers to be fine to go in so soon after birth and they will have policy saying the baby needs to be checked, i'm sure.. has the mw done checks? is this just the paed check?

Spink · 13/02/2009 08:45

i meant to say YANBU!!

and happy fri 13th everyone .

mastitis is horrid and dh being flaky but have pills for boobs and a sharp stick for dh so hopefully it'll look up soon...

tinkislittlemissshopping · 13/02/2009 09:50

morning

saw hv yest bracken was weighed has gained 4.5ozs now 8lbs13.5ozs
i am knackered!! need matchsticks for my eyes.

EachPeachPearMum · 13/02/2009 10:09

Hey snap tink!!! DS weighed 8 13.5 yesterday
He is a porker compared to dd , lol, he has put on 10 or 11 oz since last thursday never stops eating though it feels like.
Dog- drs receptionists are a breed apart do they have a separate room you can wait in? (ours do if you have chicken pox or something)

eachpeach thanks for posting on the other thread - I've only just got round to replying to you there!
I'm slightly sad to say I've no idea what dd weighs, only seen my hv twice and will see her once more next week (6 week sign off). There is a weekly weigh-in/mum&baby group at the local clinic but it was really really cliquey when I used to go with ds so I am staying away this time!

Dog Isla is a beautiful name.

You most definitely are NOT being unreasonable. I was told my GP would automatically come out within 24 hrs of my home birth - they surely can't expect recovering mothers and newborn babies to wait in a waitingroom full of flu and norovirus - thats ridiculous! Well done on sticking to your guns.

DS1 was bemoaning another bad head and feeling sick this morning. DH agreed he looked fine and we both told him he had to go to school. Then they called me at 12.30 to say he'd thrown up again!

Luckily my Aunt was visiting to see Elizabeth for the first time and she looked after DD while I popped across to get him.

His teacher was there cleaning him up and said she hadn't believed him either as he looked fine. Then he suddenly went green and threw up. Thing is he was fine almost as soon as he was sick. She said she thinks it could well be migrainous but possibly stomack/abdo migraine which she has some experience with. Am going to get his eyes tested as well as taking him to the gp next week.

He's home with me now and right as rain, just a bit tired.

BTW, DH gave Elizabeth a 4oz expressed bottle at 11.00 last night. She took 3 and half ounces (took ages to take it though) and fell asleep from midnight to 6.00am. Then took a huge feed from me and slept till 9.45am. We woke up feeling really odd after such a long stretch of sleep, but I feel so much better now. I expressed the feed she had a bottle for last night and froze it and have expressed one this morning for her to have tonight. If last night is a sign of things to come I'll be feeling almost human soon! (Moose quickly runs around touching every bit of wood in the living room! )

ALSO, she is doing the most fantastic huge smiles. She started doing them about Wednesday last week. Mainly when she wakes up and sees my face, but also at her eldest brother and she even did one for her Grandpa the first time she met him last Sunday. Am really surprised as it was really early for her to start smiling, I didn't want to tell anyone until other people had seen it too and agreed its definitely not wind!

missjackson · 13/02/2009 15:54

mm congrats on your six hour stretch of sleep - can only imagine! Actually our nights aren't too bad but only because I take the easy route and let LO co-sleep with us and nurse lying down - we both fall asleep. But penalty is very sore nipples in morning as he comfort suckles for far too long!

Daytimes are another issue altogether - he feeds and falls asleep on boob but then wakes up and cries if we move him. Always seems in agony but a few sucks on nipple is fine again. It's really not a great pattern... Am reading the baby whisperer book and will try her method - let baby feed, then some activity, then sleep - supposed to break feeding-sleeping association... thanks ray for recommending, fingers crossed.

love the name dog - really pretty.

moosemama · 13/02/2009 17:01

missj couldn't do the feeding lying down thing, apparently its a common problem with 'ah hem' larger chested ladies.

I had the baby whisperer book with both boys. I found it was useful as long as I only took from it the bits that suited me/us rather than trying to follow the whole routine. It did give me confidence as a newbie though, as it helped me realise my baby would survive longer than 2 hrs without a feed and I didn't need to have my entire life led by my baby's demands as long as I met his needs and made sure he was secure, comfortable, fed and happy.

missjackson · 13/02/2009 18:20

MM I have quite big boobs too but if I sort of hold my nipple extended out to him, it seems to be okay - but sometimes the little mite does drown in the generous bosom unless we get our positioning sorted out!

Have had relaxing afternoon in bed sleeping next to LO. He's been asleep for 2.5 hours now.. I am sure we will pay for this with sleepless night later! But busy evening ahead - have to take him out for some mini party thing at a local pub - hmmm, we will see how that goes!

LenniEd · 13/02/2009 21:03

Jusst stopping in quickly. I also managed lying down feeding last night which was lovely until I realised I'd drifted off and all of DS's comfort sucking meant I was laid in a pool of milk ick!

Love the name Dog

MM - glad you got some sleep

EachPeachPearMum · 13/02/2009 22:59

Ooh- I never managed to feed lying down- just can't get comfy!
Hi spink- sorry you're suffering with mastitis, not nice at all
moose- hope DS is back to normal soon.

DS has an infection under his cord stump saw GP today and we have some anti-biotic cream. Thankfully the cord fell off this afternoon, so at least it should get air round now, and clear up quickly.
