How did I not know about 16-weeks hell?? I am now v.scared, not that we have any defined routine, but that Erin is a good girl between feeds and I can get lots done

Ah well I shall find out soon enough. Erin is 12-weeks on Thursday.

bbaby - it said 'NUK nasal aspirator' on the pack, basically a pipette you squeeze, hold to nostril, hold other nostril shut, release, and out comes snot. Great when A was really bunged up but now he hates it.

He's now gone to sleep so I should too!

foxytocin · 10/12/2008 09:14

beca the size of the baby has nothing to do with how long it will take for the gut to mature. Someone would have to take a tissue sample of the small intestines to determine how mature his gut is. So, some babies may be ready by 20 wks, some a bit later. What they do know is that all babies are ready by 26 wks.

Yes, babies can last till 26 wks because milk is more calorific and nutritious than first weaning foods, oz for oz.

The UK adopted 26 wks for weaning about 4 yrs ago but the WHO has been recommending it for at least the last 10 yrs.

ChristmasFlower · 10/12/2008 09:36

yes, now that I think anout it, when I had DS (4.5) the weaning age was 4 months, I think I started around 4.5 months when HV suggested it - hadn't really thought about it til then as for some reason I remember being convinced it was 6 months. this time HV is set on 6 months, not before, which is fine by me, no extra cooking and mess!

foxy have you packed your slings ? how many do you have then? I can see myslf becoming addictive to them... new addiction to add to the nappy one ...

2nd jabs today... she screamed so much last time , though forgot about it quickly...

ChristmasFlower · 10/12/2008 09:38

addictive?! addicted that is!!

DebiTheScotUpAChimney · 10/12/2008 09:55

I think ds2 has started his 16 week growth spurt 2 weeks early. He's been waking earlier and more often than usual at night and then feeding for longer than usual. His day time feeds are still the same though. He also has a bit of a cold so it could be that that's waking him too. I hope he doesn't carry this on for the next 2 weeks though.

foxytocin · 10/12/2008 10:02

I can't seem to get below 7 wraps and 2 MTs.

TheHopefullyAndTheIvy · 10/12/2008 11:14

happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me! DP got me a rather lovely spa voucher, looking forward to using that!

foxy that seems reasonable - one for every day of the week and two in reserve!

DG that's brilliant! you're doing really well, and please don't feel alone on the winging it front - i think we all are. even if you can only get the odd slightly longer break, at least you're moving in the right direction.

T decided that he had slept through, and was up and ready to start the day at 5:30am . finally persuaded him to sleep from 7-8am.

TheHollyandtheBarnpot · 10/12/2008 11:43

Hopefully apart from the baths how else did you manage to keep T awake. As soon as I bath Elliot he is so sleepy again and its impossible to wake him, any suggestions.
so far the keeping him awake a bit longer has work, hes now going to sleep around 1ish yay!

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 10/12/2008 11:53

DG

'I have this constant feeling of just winging it'

Don't expect this to change EVER

Kagey The 16 week hell comes, but it goes. 'Some' it can bypass entirely! A lot of people, desperate to figure out what suddenly happened when they were making such go progress, misinterpret this time as their babies needing to wean. They do not. It will pass.

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 10/12/2008 11:54

Happy Birthday Hopefully

foxytocin · 10/12/2008 12:09

happy birthday, hopefully.

ChristmasFlower · 10/12/2008 12:24

happy birthday hopefully

just got back from the jabs... m's now asleep in the sling and though I'm bursting for a wee i'm can't bring myself to take her out in case she wakes.... she didn't cry as much as last time, though she started crying even before the nurse started!

Kagey · 10/12/2008 12:27

Thanks Starlight!!

Happy birthday Hopefully - hope you have a lovely day and enjoy your spa day soon!!

I've got a busy few days ahead now - visiting my friend and her little 8-week little girl this afternoon, and then NCT Christmas party tomorrow and then off to 'Oireland' to my DH's cousin's wedding.

Have not much packing to do as only we go on Fri and back on Sun. However Erin has the cutest little dress to wear (shame I will look like a flump so will dodge the photos!!).

LittleDonkeyCarrieMary · 10/12/2008 12:59

Happy birthday hopefully

Well I'd been feeling all smug that ds was sleeping from his 10:30 dreamfeed til 7am, but decided to wait til he'd done it a week before posting on here. And then last night he woke at 2:30 and 5am - the exact pattern he was in at 6 weeks old, and now he's nearly 11 weeks! Oh well, they like to keep us on our toes, and I guess its encouraging that he can sleep though.

My friend has given me a sling that she made by buying a 2 lengths of t-shirt fabric from a haberdashers and sewing them together. She's given me a demo of how to tie it but I'll have a look on youtube too.

Ds's new cot mattress arrived today, and the new fitted sheets. And now I'm going to buy some of those nappies that you recommended to see if we can get ds (and maybe even dd?!) out of disposables overnight.

C is becoming more high maintenance by the day - she wakes a max of 10 mins after i put her down, she's not happy playing for long.. i find it difficult to get anything done indoors - made worse by the fact that the 1 ok ish room downstairs has just been plastered - looks like they've done floor inadvertently also! so living in my bedroom which is full of bed, cot and belongings - have to wash up in the bath, all just nightmare. Fact that (d)p is being an absolute loser and is off being total idiot whenever not at work leaving everything to me and not helping. I'm feeling quite down and struggling to maintain happy facade for dd1. Night waking, lack of money....it's all a lot of stress. Am grumpy or tearful lots

TheHopefullyAndTheIvy · 10/12/2008 18:11

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

T has had his first ever proper vomit session today. I think he's got a cold or something (keeps coughing and sneezing, and isn't quite as happy as usual), and he was coughing and did a massive vomit all down my front, his front, the baby bjorn and his snow suit. He's slept loads today as well, been unable to keep him awake, so hope he's not coming down with something vile.

Barnpot the problem we have is getting T to go sleep, not keep him awake! He's fairly easily distracted by singing, nappy changing, baby gym etc as well - in fact, he's more likely to get overtired through me not noticing he's tired than he is to sleep too much.

Littledonkey I was feeling much the same, until T decided to surprise us with 5:30am waking today. I'm expecting tonight to be crap too if he's ill, but am also encouraged by the fact that he clearly can sleep through from his 1030 feed.

Splishsplosh you poor thing - that all sounds so difficult, and you're doing brilliantly to hold it all together. Is there anything you can do to give yourself a break? Visit friends or a parent who might help a bit?

charitygirl · 10/12/2008 18:15

Happy birthday Hopefully!

ninjinglebells · 10/12/2008 19:25

Hope you've had a good B'day meal hopefully, did you get a cake?

LittleDonkeyCarrieMary · 10/12/2008 19:26

barnpot it was me with the sleepy baby!

splish lots of hugs and a warm mince pie for you. In fact I'll even crack open the maltesers and we can have a party for Splish! You're a great mum in a difficult situation but you're coping incredibly well and once you're not living out of one room things will seem better. I would struggle with the building work and unhelpful dp anyway without a newborn in the equation, you really are doing brilliantly

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 10/12/2008 19:31

Agree with Carrieon. Splish There isn't one of us here who isn't struggling at times, but by the sounds of it we all have a lot more support. You're doing very very well.

imsantasmum · 10/12/2008 19:52

Happy birthday hopefully! Hope you've had a nice day and very of your spa voucher.

splish second what starlight says. You are doing your very best with very little help. Don't be hard on yourself and give yourself a big hug.

C went to her first christmas party today at Baby sensory! Took MIL too and we sang carols and had jingle bells, xmas lights and danced around the xmas tree and she got a baby einstein dvd as a present. We had loads of fun and i dressed her in a gorgeous new dress. Sigh - very happy!

splishsploshingthroughthesnow · 10/12/2008 21:05

Thanks for the kind messages - but you made me cry.
No parents, and sisters far away, and friends have kids and things of their own going on - plus i've already stayed with 3 different friends through the building work.
