So what were we all doing this time last year?

OP posts:

Ponymum I'm wondering if we're beginning the 4 month thing a bit early too. Or it might be teeth. Who knows! How's the thrush? I often of you and how incredibly impressive your determination is.
Interesting about your MIL too. My mother often talks about when we were young, and attributes our good routine, and her survival, of the early months to the fact that she was in a cottage hospital for two weeks after both mine and my sister's births, and we were brought to her every 4 hours for BF, and that was it. She was very lucky that she had a plentiful supply and it didn't completely kill BF for her! It's fascinating how different attitudes were back then. She also reminisces about the time she was delayed coming back from town, having left my dad with my older sister (who was 10 months and on solids), and returned to a screaming child, with my father furiously sat there saying, "This child is starving! Hurry up and feed her! And where's my lunch?" Apparently it genuinely hadn't occurred to him to offer her any food (he worked at home and had watched her being fed thrice daly for months), or in fact to make himself anything... They are also divorced!

Thanks for all your thoughts for SIL. I've offered to go over there and help if she needs anything (laundry, toddler care etc), as she's having a D&C tomorrow so presumably will be feeling fairly rough (I have no idea what it involves really, but presumably it ain't nice).

ninjinglebells · 30/12/2008 22:38

Sorry to hear about your SIL Hopefully

Thanks for all the condolences - it's been hard for my Dad the last couple of days now we've all gone home. But he's like me and likes to be busy so he has a list of things to do to try and organise the funeral.

M is waking sooo much at night at the moment (sometimes only 30 mins to an hour later). I'm hoping it's a phase but I'm shattered. She's still great in the day though

digitalgirl · 30/12/2008 23:07

My friend just sent me a pic of her pg scan (8 weeks), it's really cheered me up and reminded me how amazing the miracle of life is. I can't believe we made a baby this year. I look at A in wonder sometimes, that he grew from a tiny little bundle of cells inside me into this big smiling, drooling, farting, laughing, fist-chewing, 3am waking, kicking and screaming baby. We are so bloody lucky.

ChristmasFlower · 30/12/2008 23:32

hopefully sorry about your Sil.

oh, finally get to catch up and dd's waking up... why? wrong time!!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 31/12/2008 09:31

hopefully - so sorry to hear about your sil.

Well, it's NYE already and tomorrow we can all say 'I had a baby last year'. We've all had our ups and our downs, but we can all say 'we survived those early weeks'. Ladies, it's been emotional! See you all in 2009

jenpet · 31/12/2008 12:16

Finally found a few minutes to catch up! Been a bit hectic chez jenpet, finally said goodbye to everyone apart from my mil who will be staying with us for a couple of months at least
Sorry to all those of you who have had bad or sad news, its an emotional time of year...

Just wanted to wish everyone a very happy 2009 - most of us didn't even know we were pregnant this time last year - and now look! Hope you all have a fab NYE whatever you are doing too - we are going to the next village for a mixed English/French dinner & I'm taking a desert, not actually got any idea what yet but I expect I'll muddle through like usual!

Lots of love to you all xx

KashaSarrasin · 31/12/2008 14:02

Hi again so sorry about your gran ninja and you SIL hopefully it's a crap time of year for bad things to happen

foxy well done on your back carry! I haven't attempted it at all with DS2 yet and it's been a year (since I found out I was pg) since I've worn DS1 on my back so I'm a bit rusty!

DS2 actually sat on his own for 3 seconds yesterday before falling over! I was very impressed and proud. He's not showing any signs of rolling over though so everything's coming in the wrong order... (as long as it comes eventually is all I care about!)

DG you're right it's amazing what we've all done in 2008. Here's to a Happy New Year 2009 (and Bonne Année Jenpet) !

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 31/12/2008 16:00

happy new year to everyone

(sorry i havent been on here for ages but dont seem to have time to catch up or even type! lol!!)

(yes it was 1st jan that i found out i was pg...but i wasnt really sure on those cheapie ebay pg test..so on the 3rd jan i tested using the CB digital...i literally fell over!! as my dd2 was planned but it was so quick!)

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 31/12/2008 16:01

oh my dd2 took me by surprise yesterday as she is now blowing raspberries

Ponymum · 31/12/2008 17:08

Thanks hopefully. I am doing ok with the thrush but just can't quite shake it. I have maybe 4 or 5 good days then a bad one again... but we're getting there. I wonder about teeth too. She is drooling so much she sometimes soaks her entire front and has to be changed. She has really hard ridges in her mouth and is shoving her hands in all the time.

Happy new year everyone for tonight. Would you believe that when I gave DH the shopping list on Monday I forgot it was NYE this week! Not exactly party central here. Luckily I raced to the shops today and grabbed some things so we can have a semi nice supper tonight. Currently there is a nice piece of pork in the oven slow cooking for 5 hours in cider, yum yum. Unfortunately I am also soaked in cider as I bought some stuff made by the local monks (tis true) and their quality control is possibly not so hot. As I tried to take the top off there was a cider volcano monster explosion and half the bottle ended up over walls, floor and me. So much for 'it will just take 5 minutes to put this in the oven'.

By the way, any tips for going away with DCs? We are going to Scotland for a week on Saturday and I'm terrified I'll forget something really important. We've never been away with DD before.

TheHollyandtheBarnpot · 31/12/2008 19:11

how long do teeth take to come through, his first one is causing him some grief, we're on with the bonjella and the calpol, but wondering how long it will last, any ideas?

digitalgirl · 31/12/2008 20:00

ponymum we're at my mums tonight. It's Alfredo's first sleepover. We took a travel cot plus sheets, playmat, changing bag, pushchair and wilkinet, bathrest, grobag, a million nappies, loads of toys and loads of clothes. Toyed with bringing something he could sit in like the bumbo or bouncer. But with enough cushions he can be propped up on the sofa or there's always a lap available. Have forgotten to bring calpol and infacol but so far he seems relatively happy. Am just feeding him before putting him back to bed, he had fallen fast asleep within five minutes of his bath. But I think the unusual sleeping arrangement means I might be doing this a few more times before midnight.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Meglet · 31/12/2008 20:51

happy new year to mummys & babies xx

Hopefully · 31/12/2008 20:56

God, I had the most extensive list in the world the first time I went away overnight with T. The second time I had pared it down by half, but still took things like his bedding (used, so it smelt right to him), bath seat, a million nappies and changes of clothing, muslins, travel cot, a couple of toys (but they never got used as he was always being occupied by some doting relative!)

A woman at my baby group had the most gorgeous sling today - a stripy didymos ring sling (think it's actually called a didysling). I've never been remotely tempted by slings, but I quite liked the fact that it could be used as a kind of hipster carrier when they're toddlers (useful to shove in a bag and take, rather than a pram for short outings, I can imagine). Any experience of this sling, foxy and other experts?

Just had the most yummy lamb shoulder for dinner, roasted for 4 hours a la Jamie Oliver. Goooorgeous. And a Rachel Allen banana butterscotch pudding in the oven as I type.

Happy new year everyone! 1 year today since I found out I was pregnant, and what an amazing time it's been. I've been so thrilled to share it with you lovely lot

jenpet · 01/01/2009 06:48

Happy New Year from a totally shattered jenpet - an excellent night last night - and a wonderfully happy and ready to play Samuel 5 hours after getting into bed [red eyed emoticon]

ninjinglebells · 01/01/2009 09:30

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hope that M's not made her new years resolution to sleep like last night - feeds at 12.30, 2.00, 3.30, 5.00, 6.00 and awake until nearly 7 (screaming unless I held her upright she's a bit bunged up) then asleep until nearl;y 8.30!!

On the plus side the night before was 4.30 and 5.30 only

She's still worth it

Hopefully · 01/01/2009 09:35

Happy new year everyone! It wasn't so happy for us in the small hours - T had feed at 11, went down at 12, was awake 2:30-3:30 (had a feed), 5:00-7:00, 7:00-7:30, then slept for another hour, thank god. DP and me are both absolutely dead on our feet, he's sleeping while I feed and entertain, and I will do likewise in a bit.

T's done this the past few nights, am praying it's a growth spurt, but he's not demanding any more feed at all during the day, so I'm wondering if it is or not.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 01/01/2009 10:02

Happy New Year ladies.

There must be something in the air, as M was up 3 times in the night (yawn).

ninjinglebells · 01/01/2009 11:09

DH is still in bed, but I'm going to have to get a nap today as I looked after M all night.

DD1 is up and being cheerful (despite wetting the bed last night AGAIN. I don't have the energy.

Never mind, it's bright and sunny and this is the year when our lo's get to crawl and walk (maybe), to sleep through (fingers crossed) and to try solids (certainly). It's going to be a fun one

LittleConnie · 01/01/2009 18:11

Happy new year ladies! Am very proud that I managed to stay up til 1am this morning... was such a lovely night.

Quick question for you... just wondered how many of you actually manage to put your lo's down at bedtime awake, and if so how do you do it?

digitalgirl · 01/01/2009 18:22

2009 has begun!

Definitely something in the water...A was up at 11:30 (and fell asleep on my lap for midnight so it was a quiet celebration), 2:30, 4:30, 6:00, 8:00 and then I gave him to my mum so I could sleep in till 11am (bliss!)

Can't believe I'll be weaning A in two months - 8 weeks. Very exciting. He hasn't shown any intention of rolling but loves to sit, stand and 'swim' on his front.

Is anyone else's baby absolutely transfixed by the tv? I think we've got a little couch potato on our hands. If we turn him the other way he cranes his neck round to carry on watching.

Hopefully · 01/01/2009 18:26

DG T will watch TV from dawn to dusk given half a chance. He also does the neck craning!

Littleconnie we put T down awake for his daytime naps, but pretty drowsy (usually asleep within a few minutes of hitting the cot, and we stay with him), but put him down asleep for the night feeds - only so DP and I don't disturb each other with the shhing and patting as we put him down, as the cot is in our room.

digitalgirl · 01/01/2009 18:31

X-posted LC nope A never goes down awake. If we put him down before he's fallen asleep he thinks it's playtime and starts up a conversation - we try this every so often to see if he's ready but no such luck yet. The nearest I've got to it is putting him down after he's fallen asleep and he's briefly opened his eyes and noticed he's being put down but is happy to go back to sleep. I don't think he'll self settle for a few months yet.

ninjinglebells · 01/01/2009 19:36

M goes down awake, and every time she falls asleep I think it's a miracle! Sometimes she complains a bit first (talking not crying) but often she just falls asleep (sometimes inder her baby gym) - it's magic. My first DD NEVER did this.

They all learn to in the end

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 01/01/2009 19:39

It's a bit hit and miss if we put down M awake. There doesn't seem to be knack or trick to it with him, he either does fall asleep by himself, or he doesn't.

M has been unsettled today as well. I think it's his teeth, but who knows? He's usually such a sunny little fella, but today he's been wailing a lot. Oh, and he's learnt how to shriek over the past few days
