I thought I'd start a new thread before we run out of space...

1 boob or 2

listen to your baby. not some 'expert.look at your baby's body language and respond to it.

more detail: start on one as per normal, feed as long as baby is happy there. offer second side if baby seems to want it. if he falls asleep, you unlatch/put down and he starts to root again, then feed again. it is ok to offer 3, 4, 5 'sides' in a feed too. don't be caught up with this 'finishing one side first' idea. it is not an oil well that will dry up or the 'goodness' settles so you have to keep them there longer so they have to drill down for it.

by responding to a baby's feed cues, your breasts make just what is needed.

this link may help with the foremilk / hindmilk palava.

foxytocin · 24/11/2008 11:06

so, what this means is that the shorter the gaps are between feeds, and therefore the emptier your breasts feel, the higher the fat content of your milk.

your breasts are never empty because they are always making milk. just that soft breasts make milk faster that fuller ones do.

pacita · 24/11/2008 11:40

Cheers foxy.

ah ha! you're so clever foxy

splishsplosh · 24/11/2008 12:54

Dd2 did the most astonishing poo this morning, up to her armpits front and back, so she had her first ever bath - she hated it and cried lots, but has been sleeping peacefully ever since - nearly 4 hours! Maybe I should start doing it each evening!

Debs sorry to hear about your son, hope you're coping ok

foxytocin · 24/11/2008 13:12

"ah ha! you're so clever foxy"

no, boobs are clever

carrieon · 24/11/2008 13:19

I haven't worried about ds's single sided feeding since someone pointed out to me that that's what twins do!

notcitrus · 24/11/2008 16:17

A usually only feeds on one side before falling asleep. I've found I don't leak as much now I'm better at using my left breast (now 2-3x/day rather than only expressing 1/2x with it).

We've got a rough pattern now of him feeding like mad in between wanting cuddling all evening, then crashing around 11pm after a feed and staying asleep until 5-7am. If I try putting him down earlier, he just wakes up after I've only had a couple hours and then wakes every couple hours after that, so the former is the way to go (especially if we go to friends for the evening so others can do the joggling!)

Doesn't work every night, but it's getting better (and touch wood, so is out thrush...)
Now just have to figure out how to feed at night without freezing my tits off, literally...

becaroo · 24/11/2008 16:18

biglips...crikey I thought we were doing loads of ff at 7 per day of 6-7 oz!!!!!! Sorry to hear about the thrush and graze...I still may well end up back at hospital for my perineum to be cauterized

splish...T hated the bath at first and I dreaded bath nights (only 2 a week!) but he loves it now

MOT and service today....£290 Will have to sell a kidney.....

T sometimes spends a little while with his eyes open before falling properly asleep - you can wave your hands in front of his face and nothing happens. It's very surreal!

My mother has just told me I have put on weight since giving birth and need to go on a diet

foxytocin · 24/11/2008 16:34

Slingwise, the only thing lighter with support is a Calin Bleu Gauze. Look at bigmama or slingjax etc to see if any have one on sale seeing its not gauze weather now. or ukbabywearingswap if you are a member. i don't have any guaze wraps sorry. Failing that! Mei Tai! Your LO will do fabby in a MT at moment and that is deffo cooler. Why don't you borrow the Solarweave connecta someone has offered?

pacita · 24/11/2008 16:35

Ladies am at mothercare shopping for breastpump - manual. Avent or tommy tippee? Thanks!

OP posts:
plusonemore · 24/11/2008 16:53

i have an avant and find it fine. depends on what sort bottles you want to use i guess?

ipanemagirl · 24/11/2008 17:27

hello all!
dd shouting as I type so I'd better feed her soon!

Has anyone bought any of those baby classical music cds or whale song or whatever that they'd recommend? I was looking at them in the nct catalogue and wondering which might be good?

First baby/toddler group today and dd loved staring at the huge 10 and 11 month old babies! Funny to be in a song circle again after so many years and singing Miss Polly had a Dolly who was sick sick sick again, I still remember the words too!

foxytocin · 24/11/2008 17:43

hate those baby cd's. just play them normal classical music another thing to separate new parents from their money.

starlight I sent off the clothes - the offer's still there to borrow the connecta - I can send it off separately if you want?

Sassyfrassy · 24/11/2008 17:58

Pacita, aqueous cream can be really bad for the skin for some people. If I use it on dd1 her exzema and dry skin gets a lot worse and very itchy, so you might need to try some different kinds. I've found aveeno to be the best one so far and use it for both girls.

pacita · 24/11/2008 18:21

Sass thanks so much for the tip. Diego had unbelievably scaly skin this morning, and I fear it may be the aqueous cream. It didn't happen before, could it be that he has built up an intolerance? Last night I switched to olive oil. I have been recommended both aveeno and e45 junior. Have any of you tried the latter?

Re: breastpumps: I ended up buying the tommy tippee one for two reasons. First, that it was on offer for 20 English pounds including bottle, nipple and steriliser. Second, that it was the only brand to explicitly say that it is compatible with breast feeding. Of course, we all know that this can be marketing bollox, but I figured that if the whole thing doesn't work, at least I won't have parted with a big sum. Anyone has used the tommy tippee manual pump?

Re: baby CD's, I tend to agree that these baby compilations are designed to make people part with their money. Diego's current favourite is Mozart's clarinet quintet: sunny and pacey.

starlight - I call that look the thousand yard stare. It really makes me laugh! I don't think ds is actually asleep when he does it, but he's well on the way to dropping off when he does.

DS is full of coo's today and it just melts my heart

barnpot · 24/11/2008 19:01

I have the tommy tippee breast pump, If my boobs are really full, and need milking I find it quite useful, but otherwise i cant get it to work. while elli was in the hospital, i used a green electric pump which i found much more effecive. but i generally dont express, generally because i am always available to elli, and secondly he has started refusing to take anything from a bottle. he always wants it straight rom the tap!

Sassyfrassy · 24/11/2008 19:24

We've tried E45 and it was just as bad as the aqueous cream. When we first tried the aqueous cream it was ok for a couple of days and then Becky's skin got a lot worse. If you ask to see the nurse practioner or gp they can give you a prescription for either, though I seriously recommend the aveeno, so that you don't have to pay for it. Makre sure you get something for the bath as well as bathing in just plain water makes the skin drier. Oilatum can be just with infants and it's pretty good.

carrieon · 24/11/2008 19:26

starlight at the idea that I'm an experience bf mum. HOOORAY!!

Met a friend's 9 day old baby today...oh my goodness ds is so big in comparison at 8 weeks! Put him to bed in one of his 'newborn' babygrows just to tell myself that he's still teeny really

Was feeding ds while he was only wearing a nappy tonight...and discovered he has cronic armpit cheese! Never thought to wash there!

My GP prescribed aqueous cream and the HV did an eye-roll and said half of babies are allergic to it (or at least it makes their skin no better).

Dinner time!
