July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

TJuice - they do have baby cinema time but I am just going to normal showing today. Abbie is very good and will probably just sleep or bf the whole time xx

isaidno · 25/07/2008 08:31

jodie - does the bf hurt all the time you are feeding or just for a few seconds as Sam latches? After 5 weeks my nipples are still a little sensitive if Poppy latches on awkwardly or too fast. It shouldn't hurt for more than about 10 seconds.
You might have to adjust the latch if you are in constant pain.

Libra1975 · 25/07/2008 10:26

oh oh oh, so jealous you are going to see Mamma Mia. I was due to see that the day A turned up so scuppered that plan. Mini can you let me know how Abbie gets on with the sound volume?

TJuice - Odeon have what they call Newbies cinema but it's ONE showing of ONE film a week and the film has to be 12A or under (wtf do they think a baby is going to absorb from showing a 15 or an 18 film???). However they are very generous, they charge the adult full price but the baby goes free.

minipinkscottish · 25/07/2008 10:38

Libra tbh I think Abbie will have no probs with the noise but that doesn't mean other babies will be okay - remember she is in a house with 4 brothers and a sister

lol, a friend of ours from NCT has just taken her 4 week old to Womad and bought ear defenders for him so I might have to borrow those and go next week!!

isaidno · 25/07/2008 11:17

I think if I went to the cinema I would just nod off after 10 mins in the dark...

JODIEhadababy · 25/07/2008 11:58

Oh Cinema sounds good, what a fab idea, might have to look into that, quite fancy the Batman movie, Christian Bale is HOT!

ISAIDNO, thanks for the tip, it just hurts when Sam latches on, and sometimes it starts 'chaifing' after about 20-30 mins, so I give him 30 mins on one side, then offer him the other side and he generally takes about another 10 mins.

SK I've still got those sheets and I keep meaning to get them to you, but other things 'happen' IYKWIM anyway, is my resolution to do it this weekend!

How is everyone else?

MINNIE I had horrible piles after birth, but a tube of anusol did the trick and they had calmed down after a few days, and gone within about 10 day.... Lovely! (I also had a Lavender bath every night, even if it was only 10 minutes, which calmed the swelling)

There has been so much chat I can't really remember what's been said, am just over to the other thread tp see what's occuring over there... Anyone heard from PIGLEY?

MINNIE1 · 25/07/2008 12:47

Right off to get something for these horrible piles!!!!! o the pain! had another screaming session on the loo this morning!

Would love to see Sex and the city but i dont think they would like to see me coing with 3 under 3! But love the idea of the baby cinema.

Leah is doing well, god i so dont want her to grow up.. I want to keep her the way she is... I enjoy them at this stage (not the no sleeping part)

minipinkscottish · 25/07/2008 18:12

Hi ladies - film was fab and Abbie was fantastic - slept or bf

OP posts:
Minkus · 25/07/2008 21:26

Ahh minnie I am the same with Louis, want him to stay his cute little round self forever, needing me and nowt else Poor you with the bottom grapes, I'm in the same boat and can second Jodies' anusol recommendation it's marvellous stuff.

Wel Louis is living up to one of his many nicknames- The Chief Boob Botherer. He has been feeding much more frequently yesterday and today, could be because of the heat and he is thirsty or I have read that they have a growth spurt around 3 weeks- he was 3 weeks yesterday. Thankfully my nips have toughened up much quicker than with ds1 (took 7 weeks of toe curling with him, every time he came off the boob up until then I honestly expected to see masses of blood as it felt like my nipples had sheared off completely ) and so although I feel like I have a baby stuck to my norks 24/7 at least it doesn't hurt. I even fed him in Lidl this morning! The mothercare nursing vests I recommended earlier are brilliant for discreet feeding, I was pushing a trolley with one hand, holding Louis with the other arm and feeding him at the same time and nobody would ever have known. Even the old chap who said ah what a lovely baby you've got there my love, which shelf was he on bless him.

HV came round for first time yesterday too (in this area they visit you for the first couple of weeks until your 6 week check then you go to them if you feel the need to)- she was lovely. The one I had with ds1 was great too- I know they get a bad press but I have nothing but praise for the ones I have encountered so far. Really sensible advice and very supportive of mums being able to make choices that are right for their families (eg feeding methods/sleeping routines etc)

DH off out tonight for a pint so I am mning in peace!

Peanut73 · 25/07/2008 21:52

Minkus - I bought two of the mothercare feeding vests on your recommendation. I take it you don't wear a bra underneath them? (Sorry if stupid question). It's just that I don't know whether the 'support' bit in the top is enough for my huge melons.

gillythekid · 26/07/2008 07:53

Still alive guys, still got a migraine, still can't stay on the laptop. All ok, will get back on to it as soon as I can see properly! Hope all's ok in MN land and all are safe and well.

minipinkscottish · 26/07/2008 08:50

Poor you gilly xx take care xx

I had a fab night - Abbie fed most of last evening and went down around 10pm. She didn't get up till 3.30am and then slept again till 7.30am Hope it lasts xx

OP posts:
RUMPEL · 26/07/2008 12:36

Hi All,

Gilly - could be hormones settling - try taking agnus castus tinctureto help them regulate. hugs

Typing 1 handed as b pumping with other

We are having a total nightmare time of it just now DD is up half the night crying due to the chickenpox, and Calvin just takes ages tro settle at night - no sleep last night or night before. DD had DH up until 12.30am before she would settle and Calvin juts feeds constantly and then pukes! He will not take a dummy and wants to fall asleep with a bottle or boob in his mouth!!! Ended up downstairs with my fingers in my ears this morning trying to take a deep breath and calm down. Went into DH and ended up crying and saying I cannot cope He got up and looked after both of them and I went to bed with ear pulgs and slept for 2 hours.

I thought he might be a bit scared of the dark and have been keeping a dimmed light on but Dh suggested putting bright lights on at night and wearing an eye mask - what do you reckon? He sleeps a lot during the day so i think it is just he has day and night muddled - like a lot of newbies.

Glad most of you are doing well.

PONTO - I meant to say at your birth story too - must have been horrid - no privacy for you and scary for others too.

I had a friend of a friend who gavce birth in the supermarket car park

Must go rouse Calvin and get some clothes on!

xxxxx

JODIEhadababy · 26/07/2008 12:41

Rumple

My DS1 has Chickpox too... Poor chap, What are you doing about Calvin? I don't know what to do about Sam. Is it dangerous in newbies (Sam now 3 weeks?) What are you giving your DD for treatment?

JODIEhadababy · 26/07/2008 12:42

Oh and Wow Catec... Labour YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!

RUMPEL · 26/07/2008 12:52

JODIE - MW reassured me it is quite rare for newborns to devlop it - they have protection form us for 4 weeks or so. However, it can be quite dangerous in newborns as they cannot regulate their temperature - you need to keep them cool - tepid baths, sponged down and hydrated. Dr told us there is nothing they can do but keep an eye on him and bring him in if we are worried. They have anti-viral drugs for special cases but apparently chickenpox can cause pneumonia in some cases - I never knew that!

I am just praying that he doesnt develop it. DD has been getting disprol and calamine lotion and the occassional biccie to cheer her up She is a total nighmare just now though - feeling rubbish and also a bit insecure what with Calvin etc.

Must go .....

sweetkitty · 26/07/2008 17:26

Rumpel - Piriton liquid is really good for relieving the itch from chicken pox. Poor you it's the last thing you need CP and a newborn to contend with. I think I would be in tears too, I am hoping DD2 gets a better sleep tonight too.

Oh that subject we finally got DD2 a toddler bed and Bethany has got the bedside cot so as of tonight she is in it. Although saying that twice last night I fell asleep feeding her and woke up and she was nestled into me. Have to remember to put her back into the cot once she has finished feeding. All 3 of mine have slept in beside me I don't know how to get a baby to sleep in it's own bed I really don't Wonder how DD2 will get on without bars to keep her in at night. DD1 didn't come out a cot until she was 3 she never climbed out didn't occur to her to.

I am so hot it has been overcast here but so clammy drinking loads of water too, the iron tablets have made me a bit constipated and when I do go for a no2 ouch. Don't know if I have any piles or not scared to go downstairs still.

Has anyone got back in the erm saddle so to speak yet or are you all like me farthest thing from my mind. Going to wait a good few weeks with the tear and all. MW very bravely mentioned contraception the other day, as if!?

pigleychez · 26/07/2008 18:27

Just a quicky ladies.... will attempt to catch up later at some point and fill you in on the gorey birth details!

Well...

Eventually at 12 days overdue. Abigail Rose was born on 24th July at 3.17am.
In true "being fashionably late" style i was in labour with her for 27 hours!! All of which were hell and ended up with a emergency von touse (spelling?) and forceps delivery.
Or as DH put it -- Carnage!hmm

But still we now have a beautiful little girl who we love every inch of! grin

sweetkitty · 26/07/2008 20:48

Just thought I would bring over an updated list cannot believe it 44 babies and boys outnumbering girls 2 to 1, must have been a testosterone packed October/November last year

DonutMum · 26/07/2008 20:57

Hi all. Congrats Pigley.

Am having a bf dilemma. I have had to use nipple shields and now I feel brave enough to latch Logan on without them, he's not having any of it - and gets really frustrated, bless him. I want to stop using the shields cos i think it's affecting my milk production - I only seem to have loads in the right boob. Anyway, it's been sooo frustrating, I'm thinking I should just switch to bottles full time instead of breast then bottle which means minimum one hour, ususally two per feeding session and therefore no time with DS1 and DS2. Poor boys. The funny thing is, everyone seems so ambivalent about it - midwives have all said, don't worry if you can't bf, DH is "it's up to you"... I really want to and it breaks my heart to think I might give up but is it worth it given the time I'm spending or will it get better? Or is having fed him for two weeks given him a good start anyway? HELP!!!
Sorry for the me me me!

Libra1975 · 26/07/2008 21:14

Rumpel - crossing fingers your LO doesn't get CP and that your DD feels better soon.

Donutmum - is there anyone of a professional nature you could talk to about it such as an NCT breastfeeding counsellor? or the La Leche League? I can't really give you any help as a first-timer who is struggling at times herself (but am lucky that I have no other DC to think about)

Pigley - great news, congratulations and Abigail is a lovely name.

Mini - I'm very jealous that Abbie is sleeping so well - please tell us your secret!!

We had the midwife yesterday and Alexander has managed to put on 14oz in 5 days, which will explain why all I have done is breastfeed for the last 5 days! Had a little minibreakdown today with tears everywhere however talked to DH and now feel much better, managed to put A down at 7:45pm and then had a lovely supper with DH outside.

cass66 · 26/07/2008 21:45

Rumpel, it is hard, I can't offer many words of wisdom. But I wouldn't keep bright lights on at night, that might confuse him more. I'd stick to dim lights. other advice I had was to keep the radio on so it's not dead quiet at night, and to put a warm cloth/muslin etc in the moses basket with him that smells of you. and don't change nappies at night, it'll wake him up more. and have you tried swaddling?? it can help some babes. other than that, a large G and T!!!

Edward settles quite well at present, but my other 2 didn't, my husband used to pace up and down for ages with my first after I'd fed her at night, just talking nonsense and singing.

And I second piriton for your elder child. it might help him sleep also.

Stay sane!! Cass
