July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

1000 replies

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

minkus - we put charlie to bed in our room (dark with a dimmed night light on) at 7.30pm with the baby monitor on. x

isaidno · 21/07/2008 21:35

tjuice - that could be true about feeding lying down for some babies. I have to be honest and say I have no idea how long Poppy's on for because I've fallen asleep myself! She only wakes up about 3 hours later so I'm guessing it's not a problem for her! I do know that she likes the 6 am feed to be a sitting up one - like she's saying "It's morning Mummy, stop being a lazy arse!"

McChesers - do not worry about the amount you can express, it is no real indication of the milk available. Babies can get it out much better than pumps! (I am useless at expressing.) Make sure you drink lots of fluids though - bf is thirsty work.

Tomorrow DH and I are taking the DC to West Midlands Safari Park. I am wondering if we are slighyly mad... It will either completely tire Poppy out so she sleeps like a log, or put her all out of sorts.

Minkus · 21/07/2008 21:35

tjuice and Isaidno (and any others doing a proper bed time rather than haphazard sleeping on mummy on the sofa thing like we've done so far) what does your lo's bedtime consist of? I tried this evening with a quiet feed, cuddle, slow relaxing rock in his crib in a nice dim quiet room- and he has screamed from 8pm until now (dh just gone in to see if he has any more luck than me). I know he is tired because he's been doing the manic arms and legs thing ds1 did (see previous post!) plus the longest he's stayed awake previously in his little life has been about 30 mins. I've been crying, Louis' been crying - it's been generally dreadful. Help!

Minkus · 21/07/2008 21:38

Peanut when did you start doing that? Am I trying a bit soon (18 days in!) or should I just bite the bullet? I'm sure it was just as awful with ds1 but I really can't remember anything like this

isaidno · 21/07/2008 21:38

Minkus - I still either cuddle or feed Poppy to sleep. I just make sure I put her in her bed around 8pm. She didn't settle until nearly 9pm tonight. She isn't able to settle herself to sleep very well yet.

libralady · 21/07/2008 21:42

Thanks for all the positive thoughts girls. I have relented on the golf thing though, albeit as long as tee off time is very early in the morning so he is back by lunchtime to spend some time with the children.
Maybe I am a soft touch and incredibly tired so emotions are running high. We haven't argued or even raised voices regarding this so are still calm iyswim. I know I need to put my foot down and even moaned sbout DH to MIL today and she agreed he needs to make some more family time.
Oh and work have agreed to me extending my ML due to my Mum having her hip replacement op and her being my childcare. Now instead of going back on 22nd September, I'm going back on 3rd November after the 1/2 term holidays unless of course I win the lottery.

Peanut73 · 21/07/2008 21:51

cilc - i have been having a couple of wines most nights too... it has been heaven putting charlie to bed and then pouring myself a glass of sauvignon blanc... i never thought that would interfere with breastfeeding, in fact i even googled it - but you may be right! i'll cut it out for a few nights and see if there's any improvement.

tjuice - i know what you mean re the farts... quite impressive!

Good night everyone. I'm going to hit the hay before midnight for a change. Been a bit stressed today.

Oh - quick question for you girls... we are thinking of moving from our flat in islington, london to some village somewhere about an hour's commute from london (DH works in central london). Can anyone recommend any locations they like? Our neighbourhood is getting rougher and rougher... two nights ago the cops were arresting one of the neighbours as she and her boyfriend were having a huge row outside (off their heads) and were slashing each other with knives. Today the guy from the flat upstairs threatened us because we asked them to keep the thumping hip hop music down (couldn't hear ourselves think). I just don't want to bring charlie up here anymore.

I'd love to move somewhere where people don't live on top of one another, where there's more space, where I can go for a walk in the country and where I can make some friends with normal people... do any of you live in nice villagey places?

Help!
x

Minkus · 21/07/2008 21:53

Isaidno that's reassuring- dh has managed to get Louis to sleep finally and we've been chatting and he recalls me feeding ds1 to sleep for quite a long time, i.e. months, so maybe I'm just expecting too much of our new bigger family.

Minkus · 21/07/2008 21:57

Peanut that sounds so scary . Friends of ours live in a place near Godalming in Surrey called Chilworth, they both work in central London and the train links are great. Lovely villagey atmosphere with excellent facilities, we love visiting!

Sleep well x

libralady · 21/07/2008 22:03

peanut Sorry for your woes re Islington.
My brother and SIL don't live that far away (Hall Street off City Road) and the couple of times I've gone to stay with them with DS1 I've been a bit nervous as it's a completely different environment to where I live (down on the south coast in a small town/village near Poole in the countryside).
My SIL has always said though if they ever have children, they would move out of London, especially now with the hightened knowledge of knife crime. Dont know if this has increased or if the media is making it more widely known iyswim.

Peanut73 · 21/07/2008 22:29

Thanks minkus and libralady, I shall google those places in the morning. off to bed now.
xx

gillythekid · 22/07/2008 03:27

Hey ladies, I've graduated to the post natal thread and am up at 3 in the morning! Nate is fast asleep but the long labour took it's toll on me and I'm not producing any colostrum so I'm drinking lots of water and replenishing my stocks. Will give the abridged version of events later!

CilC · 22/07/2008 10:08

Oh I did not mean ladies for you to give up your wine...most LO are not affected!! Sadly just mine...but I still had a small glass every other day or so...you have to!!!

I have heard dairy for some babies is worse - every baby like every person is different!

Lying down to feed is for me more relaxing but I did find DD and Ds now sleep and suck less. So it tends to go longer and is less efficient than sitting up. I use this style though at night when in bed for late night feed (have been too busy to express) and then leave Rafferty in bed until morning feed. I tend to just fall asleep and do not always realise when he has gone back to sleep. Will only do this for the next few weeks while c section healing.

Peanut I live in Surrey in East Molesey - a lovely villagey place on the river but still London (District 6) with lots of trains into Waterloo. Very safe and loads of parks, Hampton Court Palace and greenery. Places like Richmond, Teddington, Esher, Weybridge...they are all a good commute and lovely safe areas. Plus great pubs, cafes, shops at Kingston and restaurants. Further out places like Godalming etc are also lovely as minkus mentioned.

Welcome and congratulations Gilly - hope the SPD is at least getting better. I must read up and see how everyone is.

Mcchesers thank you - just looked at your pictures also - your little boy is gorgeous! Did not realise how many people are now on facebook...I feel like I have been in outer space for some time...must go and link up and also start finally catching up on everyone's news!

minipinkscottish · 22/07/2008 11:12

Morning everyone xx hope all mummies and babies are doing well

Abbie was weighed this morning and is now 7lb 11oz - she put on 11 oz this week I am so chuffed!!

DonutMum · 22/07/2008 11:43

Hi all.

Peanut, we lived in Greenwich when DS2 was born and I had a mad urge to get out of London too. We looked at Chelmsford and Tunbridge Wells, both within an hour of London - went a bit nearer Colchester in the end which is 50 minutes by train. Based the decision on schools and, of course, house prices - Essex just had the best combo of both and it's really nice up near the Suffolk border - no ford escorts in sight.

Logan was a monster yesterday - feeding for 2 hours from 4.15 and then demanding food (Minkus, really yelling, think we're in the same boat here)every 2 hours, only to fall asleep on the breast. Little bugger. Would be easier to deal with if I didn't have mastitis aaarrgh. Anyway, will be doing my best to get a routine started today - every three hours if I can. But the poor wee boy doesn't know any different so every time I try to steel myself to hang out a bit longer for a feed i give in! Shocking given he's my third - i should know better but then he might be my last baby .

Off for a pedicure later - will prob fall asleep.

Mummywannabe · 22/07/2008 12:54

Hi all, only just gor round to finding the post natal thread!

Max is doing well, i'm ok too, a little tearful, especially around dinner time (think its the fear/reality of another sleepless night!)

Max feeds well, every 3 - 4 hours or so and settles well in the day but not at night, seems to be up 2am-5am every night, doesn't really cry just grumbles and grunts and generally keeps me awake.

DH returning to work this week and i'm terrified, does anyone else feel like that?

Can't wait to get him weighed again on thursday, he only lost 1/2 ounce in the first week so will be interested to see what he has gained and it might reassure me he is getting enoungh milk from me.

What is everyone else's view on expressing, they say wait 6 weeks but little man will only feed in one position and its not discreet at all! So makes getting out hard

purplejennyrose · 22/07/2008 16:39

Hi all - quickly popping in...have been reading posts but not found time or brain space to post the last few days!
Mummywannabe - I remember the growing dread as nighttime approaches from first time, also the being on my own fear, ok terror! You will be OK!! Actually I'm quite scared this time round of when dh is back at work - how am I supposed to do this with 2 of them!!
Florence is doing great anyway, putting on weight and generally being chilled out - although, like others on here, much more fdgety and grumbly at night. I think babies don't like the quiet! She has very long alert times as well, just looking at everything. Am beginning to wonder whether my dates were completely wrong as she seems older than 2 weeks! - and her skin has always been peeling all over, which apparently is what happens with late babies (she was officially 39 +1). Will have to get last years calendar out...Who was saying about lying down feeds - Florence doesn't latch on well like this and it hurts, so I sit up even at night - so I suppose it could lead to less milk being taken - or more wind?? Florence does cracking farts! And the other night started 'projectile pooing' with her nappy off - I was bent double laughing while dh just held her legs up and huge orange jets went in all directions....

purplejennyrose · 22/07/2008 16:40

Sorry that post was a bit of a jumble...

TJuice · 22/07/2008 20:28

hmm - i think i mentioned earlier how elodie did a massive projectile poo all over me when i changed her in the toilets of a fancy brunch cafe at my friend's birthday the other day. there was no changing table so i was changing her on this quite high chest of drawers thing and her bum was at chin level . . .

covered in it . . .

CilC · 22/07/2008 20:55

Oh TJuice...sometimes you just have to laugh...even if crying on the inside!

Libra1975 · 22/07/2008 21:10

we have yet to see projectile pooing but a friend of mine has recounted an episode where her DS managed to get their white curtains & she then burst a stitch from laughing so much.

Glad to hear all babies are putting on weight and very impressed with those of you who have managed to implement a bed time, our day seems to disappear and before we know it it's 9:00pm and he still hasn't been put to bed.

Peanut - I would recommend somewhere no more than 45 minutes by train away from London as you also have to factor in time getting to the station at both ends. Also looking for somewhere that has a fast train and fairly regular service. There are some beautiful villages around South Farnham.

Mummywannabe - we asked the MW about bottle and breast feeding (which I am guessing what you want to do with expressing) and she said deffo don't wait until 6 weeks because by then he will be too used to boob and that she thought 4 weeks would be a good time to get him used to bottle as well. She then came back today and said she had spoken to someone who had used breast and bottle (EBM) from start with no problems and there seems to be lots of tales on here that mixing from the start is fine.

Medium day with alexander all he has done is eat and sleep despite our best efforts to keep him awake a bit more, so im just crossing fingers he sleeps a little tonight. went to lunch with a couple who we met in nct who have a baby who is now 4 weeks - looks HUGE compared with Alexander!

isaidno · 22/07/2008 21:27

Well I survived the day at the safari park. We left the house at 9am and got home at 4:30 pm. Poppy was really good and slept all day, except for a couple of quick feeds. She only cried for about 20 mins in the afternoon when she got really hot. Got her into bed for 8:30pm so hopefully she will sleep well tonight - fresh air might have worn her out! The DS are def knackered. (So am I come to that...) I bet they come bouncing into my bed at 6 am tomorrow though.

Lol at explosive farting. I have not been caught yet.

Minkus · 22/07/2008 21:57

mummywannabe- absolutely with you- i was v scared about dh going back to work and leaving me with my 2 ds's, but he gave me a lovely pep talk. He said "Minkus at work you regularly give presentations to a room full of the directors of FTSE100 companies. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! And if things get a bit tough, call me and I will come straight home" And I thought about it and he was right, and of course I didn't need to call him (yet- this is only week 2 of me being on my own!) You will be fine- just take each hour as it happens and you'll soon be looking forward to the rare days when you have nothing planned just so you can gaze at your growing baby and chill out with Max without interruption. Good luck xx

PJR- I also sit up for night feeds cos otherwise I find I fall asleep with Louis beside me- he ends up taking too much milk and then wind is much much worse. Thankfully he is a greedy little bugger and feeds rarely take longer than 10 mins absolute max. But must admit I am feeling the effects of broken sleep.

Well done Isaidno for the safari park, no wonder you're shattered!

Fnar fnar at projectile pooing, not had that joy yet

sweetkitty · 22/07/2008 22:03

hi ladies just trying to get caught up with you all, brought the list back across updated as I can hardly remember who had who IYSWIM?

Bethany is doing well cannot believe it's already been 7 days since she was born, feeding going well boobs are starting to settle down. She's just a little darling, sleep all over the place though will give her a few more weeks though.

I'm a bit up and down, my iron level was 9.6 after the birth after always being at 11 odds MW said I lost a lot of blood, have been feeling really tired though, hope the tablets works soon. Some days just want to shut myself away with DP and the DDs, think it must be the baby blues.

Anyway hope everyone is doing well x
