July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

JODIEhadababy · 17/08/2008 09:53

Hi all,

Pre-empting alot of typos as I think I;m still abit drunk!

I had such a fab night, everyone made a really special effort and I got loads of fab pressies which I really wasn't expecting. I think the highleght of the night was 'hand expressing' into a toilet bowl to releive some pressure! My feet now really hurt as I haven't worn heels for such a long time, but I danced the night away and was glad to be re-introduced to my old friend Vodka!

Was ever so starnge to get all dressed up, in my 'old life' I used to be an Air Hostess for British Airways so I got all dolled up everyday for work, so it was nice to do the whole hair and makeup thing again!

Thanks for all your HB wishes!

Peanut, My DH is just the same I learned very quickly to either let him go out (otherwise I was stuck with a grumpy husband and it wasn't worth it) Or really put my foot down, so what if he resents it, it's his baby too. I must say Disney os right though, DH got sooo much better once he could interact with DS1 and now they love playing together.

Tjuice, I've the old muffin top too, so my (not so) skinny jeans were paired with a flowing top and a big belt at the waist area to hide it.

Right off to pick the boys up and give them 12 hours worth f cuddles.....

JODIEhadababy · 17/08/2008 09:56

Bebe- that spund completely normal, and You'll be fine tomorrow, but Good luck...

Disney - Sam had those until this week, they did seem to flare up if he as crying or abit warm (like when I was holding him while BF) I used Aqueous Cream it seemed to work a treat

NObby - My first post should have been addressed to you as well as PEanut!

(god I need a coffee)

mummy2bsoon · 17/08/2008 11:40

ahhh my baby is driving me nuts!!! oh yeh we named her leah!

she jus wants to be carried, carried to sleep, carried everywhere...i cnt d neting else..i cnt put her down wen she falls asleep, she jus wake sup mins later crying...

what slings have u guys got?
im tinkin of investing in 1

EEC · 17/08/2008 12:23

Nobby - you are not being unreasonable at all. My DH was a lot like that with DS1. Just didn't get how much my life had changed and how hard it was for me. Now with DC3 he is completely different. Very understanding (although still not much of a nappy changer).

Having said that, he really doesn't know how to cope when I'm crying. All I want is for him to be understanding and say I'm doing a great job, but he sort of gets a bit ratty with me, as if I don't want Rory or something, or as if I'm critisizing him.

T juice - My milk supply really seems to be dwindling too- maybe he's having a growth spurt, but he sucks madly and seems to be getting really frustrated and is hungry every 2 hours. When I top him up at 9pm ish he absolutely guzzles down about 3oz of formula, despite me just having fed him. So far it's only been in the evenings, but today and yesterday he seems desperate in the mornings too. I have fed him 4 times already this morning. It is completely exhausting. I do drink loads of water.

Jodie - glad you had a fab night. Is it too early to start on the vodka today?

Mummy2bsoon - Snap. I am going spare!

Disney - Rory has absolutely masses of spots all over his face, head and neck! Worse every day. The hv has assured me it is fine and they will go in a few weeks. They do look worse when he is hot and crying, but actually they are just redder. The spots are there all the time.

I have just had a sort of breakthrough though in another area! He has been grizzly and awake all morning since about 4 - really tired but forcing himself awake every time he drops off. I tried walking to the park with the pram, carring him around the house, lying down in bed with him. Finally in desperation I put him in his moses basket and left him wailing - I just couldn't cope with him any more. He cried absolutely uncontrollably for 10 mins and then dropped of to sleep and is asleep now (I know, I should be sleping too, not on MN!). I feel a bit bad as I really don't agree with controlled crying with a 3 week old - but it worked! First time I've tried it too. With DS1 I waited til he was about 6 months!

Don't know whether to try this again, or whther it is too mean at this age!

Off to bed.....

Poledra · 17/08/2008 17:12

Hi all
EEC, my friend had a LO like this, she used to grizzle herself to sleep every time (the baby I mean, not my friens ). The LO just didn't like to be held when she was going to sleep - maybe Rory is a bit like this?

mummy2b i bought a Close sling this time and love it, and Iknow Sweetkitty and isaidno have them too. I had a Baby Bjorn original before and hated it as it killed my back after 15 minutes.

Nobby I second everything everyone else has said re dhs and first babies. They just do not get how tiring it is, nor (in my case)how 'tied' you can feel by the LO, even while you love them so much you might explode from it. We used to set times for going out - dh had to tell me in advance when he was going and how long he would be, so that I didn't have unrealistic expectations and also so that I could say if I felt he was taking the piss. He did listen to me sometimes

DonutMum · 17/08/2008 21:24

Hi all, just a quick post to see how everyone is. Mummy2bsoon, we've got the Close carrier and it's great. Logan goes in it when grizzly and it's like magic. Can also get a bf position in it which I'll be trying out soon.

God, I've had a rotten day. Logan been very grizzly - didn't feed much yesterday and now wanting fed all the time today. Had a power cut and go have a look at my thread on "am i being unreasonable" (if you can be arsed). Now, I know I'm a loon but really, wish I hadn't bothered - you can really get fired on mumsnet!!!! .

Anyway, off to Bahrain on Tuesday so v v v stressed and tearful. At least i won't have to go Sainsburys again for a long time.

Disney, EEC, Logan is acne ridden too. Worse when screaming or hot.

Nobby and Peanut, hope you had better days today.

Off to bed i go. Night night.

sweetkitty · 17/08/2008 22:00

hi am BFing grizzly babe who has hust been sick over her Close carrier sling so that will have to go in the wash excuse typos

Had terrible few nights Friday night B wouldn't settle for 2 hours at night and the other two were up loads too, DP and I had a big argument (probably due to sleep deprivation) I am so tired i know I should go to bed but when the DDs go down at 8 I need some time just me (and B). Nursery back full time tomorrow too.

Donutmum - I missed why you are going to Bahrain and for how long?

Poledra - I know it's mad and it's the hormones but part of me would love one more, if someone else could do the pregnancy bit and just give me the newborn of course

EEC - definitely wouldn't do controlled crying on a 3 week old BUT in saying that there has been a few times she's been crying and I can't pick her up straight away and by the time I can she's asleep maybe 5-10 mins tops. Don't think the whole timed crying thing would work but the odd grizzle to sleep might.

mummy2bsoon - sounds like a normal newborn all of mine have wanted held all the time, it does pass eventually. I agree the Close sling is great it's like magic they go on it stop crying and sleep

disney - B got a load of spots too I just keep her face clean and use a bit of aqueous cream on them

bebe - sore nips will go soon keep using the cream

Tjuice - Elodie is a little stunner

rumpel - hope the sleeping improves a bit soon x

pigley - one of my friends has twin DDs 4, DD3 17 months younger and a DS 18 months younger IYSWIM so 4 in 3 years and shes 23 insane!

TJuice · 18/08/2008 08:02

hi ladies

one-handed typing while i express now.

eec - my supply is up again, think due to the expressing after every feed. its a faff especially when you don't get anything out but worth it, as i am now expressing to replenish my freezer stock.

this weekend has been mini-nightmare 'cos we decided to try elodie in her sleeping bag instead of swaddle. had to keep going back to resettle her loads of times and last night she basically kept waking up until 10pm. so we fed her and swaddled her and she slepr from 11 until 4am and then until 7am! and good sleep too.

don't know what to do now because i am too chicken/sleep deprived to go cold turkey with the swaddle but all the books say they should be out of them soonish . . .

trouble is, we never let her just cry. she doesn't cry usually unless there's a reason but when she starts, we go in and pat her or pick her up as it doesn't seem worth her getting really wound up and then exhausting herself. but neither of us are up for hours of resettling either . . .

it might be time to toughen up a little!

anyway, sorry to me so me-and-E-centric.

hope the grizzles and sleep deprivation work themselves out for everyone . . .

i'm off to the expat bumps and babies group. its a bit lame but should try and get out.

minipinkscottish · 18/08/2008 08:09

Morning all
LAst night went well one night feed and she is still flat out. Looking forward to having a routine for all 3 girls soon.

Weather is depressing!!! SO FED UP WITH IT..

Sweetkitty
Did my first tesco shopping online OMG why was i going into shops with LOs!!! So handy and saving money by doing it too..

DonutMum · 18/08/2008 09:07

Hi all.

sweetkitty, off to Bahrain for the foreseeable future. keeping our house here for when we come back - maybe five years? might hate it and be back next year! DH has new job out there and been there since January. We were waiting for Logan to arrive and then haul the rest of the family out. So, DS1 and DS2 start reception and kindergarten at a british shcool there on 2 September and I'll be a stay at home mum. So, last of the packing today and also got to get DS1 new shoes and a haircut. Aaarrgh. Think I'll go back to bed!

Minnie1, online shopping is the way to go! I've been waiting for Ocado to deliver here since we moved here in 2006. And, just as we are moving, I start seeing Ocado vans in the village. Nuts. Been using Tesco for deliveries up to this point though (when I'm not fighting in Sainbsurys) and they are fab.

isaidno · 18/08/2008 09:27

close baby carrier is fab; Poppy spends half the day in it around the house. Screaming episodes in the evening have stopped since I started popping her in it as soon as they started. I can walk into town, around the shops for an hour, then back easily without my back hurting.

MINNIE1 · 18/08/2008 10:20

DonutMum
Hope your moving goes smoothly...

isaidno
Leah does all her screaming in the evenings too might give the carrier a go this evening. DP will be out so bedtime is down to me!!! I feel a major headache coming on thinking of it

DD1 is turning into whinge queen!!! aghhh

pigleychez · 18/08/2008 10:52

Well Abigail is alsleep in her swing - fab invention! works every time!

Typically was wide awake after her feed at 1am and stayed that way till 4am!

Minipink- bet you cant wait till the DC go back tomorow!
Re clothes- Think im going to have trouble with Abigails clothes. Shes so tall and skinny! The newborn stuff is quite short in the leg but massive in the waist and the 0-3 stuff swamps her..
Can see many years of altering clothes ahead of me!

Minnie- we have been using the Tesco home delivery service.... so much easier!

Agree about the crap Weather- Abigail has lots of lovely summer outfits but never going to wear them at this rate.

Donut- Good luck with the move.. must be hard work finding the time to pack everything.

re slings- Ive was given a baby bjorn one but havent used it yet.

sweetkitty · 18/08/2008 11:01

DD1 and 2 at nursery, B asleep so have got the housewrok done had a shower and am about to have something to eat before pick up. I have found that the minute B is asleep thats when I have to run about and do everything, she usually sleeps in the morning and a big sleep in the afternoon so not too bad.

Last night was better 10-3 (boobs heaving) then a quick feed at 5am then up at 7.30am. Was funny as she was asleep all tucked up to me last night in the crook of my arm and when we awoke at 3am we were both still in the exact same position.

Minnie - yes Tesco deliveries are fab, no Ocado round here though. Remember to get your discount codes from on here and you will never have to pay for delivery and sometimes you can get £13 off so free delivery and free food! I still go tp Asda (closest one here) about once a week at least for top ups but much easier than a full shop.

Donutmum - best of luck with your move hope it goes well and hope you will still post from sunny Bahrain.

minipink - school yey be good for them with this terrible weather too they haven't had many good holiday days. Maybe it's the name but my Abbie was a brilliant sleeper too. She went from 11-6 at 6 weeks and about 8-8 at 12 weeks, I thought whats all the hassle about babies and sleep - then DD2 came along!

Right best be off madam is waking and I think I can squeeze in a feed before pick up!

disneystar · 18/08/2008 12:06

tjuice my opinion is if elodie loves to swaddle and sleeps go with it one of mine didnt like the sleeping bags and gave up swaddling round 4 mths so id be directed by my LO

i use the self soothe routine with sam but hes a cuddler wants to be in my arms but this period doesnt last long and im going to make the most of it they grow up way to quick as babies

ive just ordered the close sling coming tomorrow looked at instructions how to use it online boy it looks tricky

but is it?

also im 4ft 11 there seems to be loads of material what do you do with it

and whats the best position do you guys find babies like to be in?

disneystar · 18/08/2008 12:10

donutmum good luck with the move hope you still post and keep in touch x

isaidno · 18/08/2008 12:14

disney - I am only 5 ft and there is alot of spare fabric left - I tie it behind me so I don't trip up!
Poppy likes the upright position, and it is easy to put on after the first 2 or 3 times!!!

EEC · 18/08/2008 13:15

I have a baby bjorn and quite like it! No back ache so far but guess I may have when he gets bigger.

Donut - lots of luck with move - it was hard enough at 6 months pg, but with a newborn

Minkus · 18/08/2008 13:26

Pigley I've got a babybjorn and it's very useful for short journeys (round the supermarket is good) and it's really easy to load your baby into/get out of but I've got the original version and apparently the "active" edition is much gentler on your back. Forgot that mine wasn't particularly comfortable for long stints but by goodness I remembered on saturday after trekking round a farm with ds1 for one of his nursery pals bday party! A friend has got a mei tei that she will lend me- anyone have experience of this type?

I also need your wisdom ladies, Louis is a star and has started regularly sleeping for 7 hours at night. Problem is that it's from his bed time not mine so I don't get the benefit of unbroken sleep (eg he goes from 7.30pm - 2.30am, then wakes every two hours- I'd much prefer he did 11pm-6am!)

I've tried a dream feed when I go to bed but although he feeds well from either me or the bottle (depending on how I'm administering it that night!) it makes no difference he still wakes up at about 7 hours after he went to bed. Any ideas on how I can change this? I don't want to have to resort to going to bed at the same time as my children just to get a good stretch of sleep.

Talking of which he's been kipping for nearly 2 hours and is starting to make some little squeaks so best go and do some housework before he wakes up baying for boob

Minkus · 18/08/2008 13:27

Yes good luck donut, let us know how you get on once you're hooked up to the internet again.

isaidno · 18/08/2008 14:53

I am in the same situation as you minkus - Poppy manages 6 hours for her first stretch of sleep - usually 8pm til 2am, then 5am ish and 7am. But I actually like this arrangement - it means I get a couple of hours peace in the evening to wind down before it is my bed time.

sweetkitty · 18/08/2008 15:28

disney - there is loads of fabric with the Close sling but like isaidno I just tie it round the back of me. I thought it would be difficult getting the baby in it but once you have done it a few times it's quite easy.

No idea about the sleeping thing I think there is a plan that says you move their bedtime up or down by 15 mins a night until you get them to sleep when you want. None of mine have ever seen this plan and sleep when they want.
