July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

purplejennyrose · 18/08/2008 17:19

close carrier - i had F in it yesterday for 3 hours walking - we went to dyrrham park near bath - it was fine, she just slept. i am soo unfit and have a dodgy back at the best of times, and i find it really comfortable. mind you can feel my muscles today..
we have same night time feeds at the mo (although it seems to change so often..) -i don't mind it too much but she doesn't settle well so i'm often awake for a long period of time which is when i lose the plot a bit.
tjuice - we swaddled dd1 till she was over 4 months, it was fine. the only rule is i think when they start breaking free of the swaddle (no pont then!) and of course if they were rolling over!

RUMPEL · 18/08/2008 18:24

Hi All,

TJUICE - we swaddled DD for ages.

Calvin has put on 2lb9ozs in 2 weeks!!!!!

HV came today - cor blimey - I said no wonder he never stops eating. Projectile vomited over my duvet several times too. trouble is he wants to got to sleep with the bottle in his mouth and gets v angry if you try to surreptiously swap it for a dummy! He is another who fights sleep.

Have had a terrible 2 days with DD - thought we were going to have to take her to jospital yesterday - high temp and wouldn't stop cyring. really red cheek (though she might have that slapped cheek syndrome) and pawing at her mouth. It was terrible - had to whip her clothes off and cool her with wet flannels and give her disprol and ibuprofen. DH was up with her most of the night (as I am up with Calvin) but her fever broke at 4am. Still a bit yukky today though. God it has been tough the last few weeks. Bought extra hungry food for Calvin and he slept for 3.5 hours last night - form 10pm to 1.30am - I zonked. Was in bed a 7.30 with him - just read and fed him until he went to sleep.

I tried the close carrier but went for the Maya one instead ( I shouldered).

Must go as Calvin is greeting again!!

Hope all our Littlies settle soon.

A lot of the original July Mummies who moved to August have had theirs now. can't find Paulaplumpbottom though - anyone seen her?

xxxxx

RUMPEL · 18/08/2008 18:29

Minnie - where you going?

DONUTMUM - You'll love Bahrain - although sometimes the expat continguent can be arseholes - watch out for the working class syndrome you get with expats!!!

JODIE - glad you had a fabby time.

DISNEY - Calvin is covered in milk spots on his face now - HV says they are bad at 4 weeks then again at 6. Anyone had their 8 week check up yet? Or babies first jags?

catec · 18/08/2008 19:34

Wow, have just managed to catch up on over a week's worth of posts - has taken me the last 3 hours (with Daisy asleep on my chest - bliss!). She is starting to stir now so no time to reply to everyone's posts but just a couple of thoughts...

Sling - I made a few ring slings - just like the Maya wrap Rumpel (there is actually instructions to make them on their site) except the rails aren't padded - and Daisy loves it, settles immediately and falls asleep instantly. I think it is because it puts her into the foetal position and keeps her hands close to her mouth so she can suck on them (her favourite thing to do).

Weight - I am so far off my pre-preg weight that I finally had to admit defeat and go and buy a pair of jeans (was sick of still wearing maternity clothes) and had to buy a size 14 - am usually a small size 8! So a bit of weight to lose here! I am gettng married in Jan so hopefully the deadline will motivate me to get it off quicker.

Controlled crying - I feel like a bad mum after reading these posts, but we let Daisy cry during the day if we know she is fed/winded/clean etc (ie. there is nothing wrong). She usually puts herself to sleep after 10 minutes or so. If she doesn't, or if the crying gets really strong, then will intervene and try and settle her. It seems to work, she gets her unsettled periods out of the way during the day and we always have really settled nights. Last night she slept 7 hours from 11 till 6 - not bad for a 3 week old!

isaidno · 18/08/2008 20:12

Rumpel - Poppy's got check up and jabs a week on Wednesday - she'll actually be 10 weeks then, don't know why it's late. Not looking forward to the nasty nurse stabbing my lickle baby!

catec - don't stress too much about the weight - 3 weeks is still very soon to be back to normal - things like the pelvis spread over pregnancy and need time to close back together. having said that I am doing well on the weight front, especially since curbing my bad pregnancy cake habit. (Currently eating a huge piece of cheesecake left over from yesterday's anniversary bbq )

mcchesers · 18/08/2008 21:18

sorry gals it's been ages since I have posted. It's been a rough three days. I believe we are on to the six week growth spurt. Baby has been feeding almost hourly and hasn't given his mum and dad a bit of rest all weekend or today. (well except 11-3 last night)I've been sitting in a chair in the window for 18 hours a day..raining and no strength or will to make it outside.

So much going on..will need to read and catch up. We went to look at a nursery today. I'm thinking we may have to go further a field to find the right place. Everyone seems nice, but the hard sell always puts me off..as does the scent of heavy perfume and fags off nursery staff. I guess I just am homesick and really gutted that I can't keep my baby with my family back home. Pissed off that I even have to look for a nursery for january, but we can't afford for me to stay home after my MA is over. Fact is I have got to come to terms with the fact that I may be here for some time and I need to get my license, get out, and get on with my life.

I just feel like I have no idea what I am doing and that I'll get caught out eventually. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm doing a good job and that baby is healthy even if he won't settle and I'm losing my marbles.

ponto · 18/08/2008 21:53

Hi all, am having a quiet evening for a change so have a time to post as well as just read the thread.

Bryony has been having some longer sleep periods, but like others have said, she does her longest stretch straight after going to bed, she slept 9.30pm to 5am the other night, I should have gone to bed early but even going to bed at midnight I still got 5 hours' sleep, which was fab . With dd1 I did try doing the dream feed at 11pm but found that she still woke once in the night so didn't bother with waking dd2 and she did the same as Bryony.

TJuice, dd2 wouldn't sleep without a swaddle, we did it for months and when she started escaping it and waking herself up I used a muslin to pin her arms by her sides inside her sleeping bag until she was 8 months old and we had really hot weather, when it made her too hot. Then I used to have to sit by the cot holding her arms down until she went to sleep. It sounds really cruel but if her arms were free she just used to bash herself repeatedly about the head and scream! So I think Elodie will tell you when she is ready to lose the swaddle, don't worry about what the books say.

I've not got much of a routine going here, I have tried a couple of times to follow the Gina Ford one if Bryony happens to wake and feed at 7, but she never manages to stay awake as long as she should, then wants feeding early, so I always abandon the attempt about 9am! I got really stressed doing this with dd1, now I'm trying to go with the flow a bit more - I found The Baby Whisperer much more helpful, as there is a bit of a routine but it's very flexible.

Bryony still hasn't managed to sleep in her crib for more than 10 minutes, she will only stay asleep in her reclining chair, slightly propped up and lying on her side, so I have resorted to putting the chair inside the crib! I was getting very frustrated by it, but then dh pointed out that she's sleeping well and it would not matter at all if she continued to sleep in it until she was 2 years old! Also it was very handy when we went away last week, as the chair is much easier to pack than the travel cot.

Disney - Bryony has quite a lot of spots over her head and a few on her chest, they do seem worse when she is hot but I took dd1 to the GP with the same thing and was told they were called milia and to just put aqueous cream on her if her skin was a bit dry.

Congratulations to bebejones, there was no room to post on the old antenatal thread. Glad your LO arrived at last, hope your first day without dh was ok.

MINNIE1 · 18/08/2008 22:54

Rumpel
Off to Dublin for a weekend, havent been there in years so looking forward to that and me time with DP...

Catec
I let Leah cry during the day, once she is fed winded and changed and know there is nothing wrong. Just so hard keeping up with all 3. So dont feel bad about the controlled crying i do it too..

disneystar · 18/08/2008 22:57

anyone elses had croup please also sams crying im in between rooms all evening here like a yo yo
gonna be a long night i guess

mcchesers im homesick to i know how you feel hun

Poledra · 18/08/2008 23:00

Disney don't have any personal experience, but I think humid air might help - can you put him into a steamy bathroom? If you run the shower really hot, it can build up a nice humid atmosphere - friend used to do this for her asthmatic son

disneystar · 18/08/2008 23:06

ok thanks worth a try

MINNIE1 · 19/08/2008 09:22

Disney
How is your son this morning??

Why dont i go to bed when L goes!!! Knackered this morning, will have to be in bed early tonight.

I was looking up the baby whisper online last night and i never knew she passed away. Love her programmes on the TV and like her way of dealing with babies.

mcchesers · 19/08/2008 09:46

disney - good lord sweetheart! Croup is horrible. My SIL went through that with her two youngest, and the worst is that feeling that you can't fix it. I'll be thinking of you, let us know what the doctors say. I hope the steam worked for you.

pigleychez · 19/08/2008 10:37

Morning all,

Disney- Hope yours sons ok? Ive heard too that the steamy room can help.... hope it did for DS.

Shocked to wake up last night at 3am to find that Abigail had slept for the past 6 hours! Couldnt believe my eyes when I looked at the clock!

Nothing planned for today so currently still in my PJ's. However theres always housework and odd jobs to keep me busy!

Rumpel- Weekend in Dublin sounds lovely.
Would love a trip away.. Not from DD... dread leaving her for the first time.

Ponto- I havent been following a routine either. However Abigail has begun to find her own kinda pattern and will feed every 3-4 hours around the same times during the day( give or take 1/2 hour ish.

Mcchesers- Of course your doing a good job! Babys will be babys and they all have thier unsettled times.

disneystar · 19/08/2008 10:48

mcchesers was your baby born same as mine the 9th?

how old is he in your pics as he looks so huge compared to samuel

someone said in asda last week he is so so tiny with little features

also so envious at you ladies that can leave there babies for a few hours or a night to go out

we havnt been out in 8 years i havet spent 1 night away from them ever

no reason for it i just get extrememly anxious danny starts school in sept and i know im gonna cry when i get home as its kind of end of an era,im the one with seperation issues here i think.

disneystar · 19/08/2008 13:26

mummy2bsoon dont know if you have other dc but if not my advise is do nothin ok

cuddle and feed her if she falls asleep cool then you can if she falls asleep feeding just stay there
try to relax and unwind hun
i was a manic cleaner before sam i havbt even done my kitchen yet from breakfast
and you know what

i dont care
i found the 3 week stage quite hard but by 4 weeks hed settled quite a bit and was much happier
anyone else find the 3 week stage harder?

mummy2bsoon · 19/08/2008 14:04

1st baby

thanx4advice

sweetkitty · 19/08/2008 14:06

Good night last night only up once at 3am. Bad morning though DD2 having major tantrum which lasted all throughout leaving toddlers in the car and into nursery where she was lying in the corridor screaming and theres me with DD1 and DD3 looking at her.

mummy2bsoon - take Disneys advice, do nothing but cuddle and feed her. They are ALL like this at this stage. DD1 only wanted to sleep on me as a baby so I would just lie on the sofa watching TV with her on top of me. It really does pass very quickly.

Disney - hope your DS is feeling better, I'm like you never had a night away from the DC either. I'm supposed to be going to a wedding in September and have no one that can look after the DDs so won't be going

mcchesers - good to see you hope little Aidan is doing well.

Minnie - I agree with 3 B has to cry sometimes or I would never get them fed or out the house in the morning.

Right better go I know the DDS are up to something upstairs they shouldn't be!
