July 2008 - Now our babies are arriving let's have a thread to talk about them...

minipinkscottish · 14/07/2008 17:04

Hi ladies
I know there are many of us still to pop but thought it would be nice to start a thread that we can come to once the LO's are here

Abbie is 4 weeks and 3 days old today and my due date isn't here yet

Abbie is doing great - eating and sleeping and very content. The feeding was hard going at first as it is very frequent with her being early but I think you actually get used to being tired

Someone (sorry can't remember who) was talking about bottle and bf together and nipple confusion. Well all the times I have bf I have done so exclusively even when it was very difficult - I am stubborn As Abbie was early and lost a good bit of weight the mw advised topping her up with ebm through a syringe. This was tough as I was bf then trying to express only to bf 1 hour later - so I gave her formula to top up. Giving her the milk in a syringe became difficult as they tended to spurt the milk too quickly at times. So I gave her a bottle to top up( Tommee Tippee - closer to nature) and it was great!!

I bf her all day and then top up after bf at night to get a bit longer sleep - it's working - she is putting on weight and no nipple confusion

sorry for huge post - hope you will all come over and join me!!!!!

EEC - I was told that a completely empty breast will generally be completely full again within 90 minutes. Obviously everyone is different, so it is hard to quantify this!

MyDingaling · 07/08/2008 21:08

Finding being a mum again hard, much harder than last time. It's so hard trying to give DD1 attention and of course, I can't sleep when baby does as I did last time.

57 BABIES AND COUNTING - 22 GIRLS 35 BOYS

Kaz1967 · 07/08/2008 21:17

Min

2 - her cord stump looks really yukky. It looks like it's about to come off but what's underneath looks a bit yellowy to me, is this normal?? I really can't remember.

Yep totally if it starts to look red and inflamed there could be an infection but initially yellow is just things dying back try to fold nappy so it stays off and it will dry off a little.

re dry skin on a baby try sweet almond oil it is made from the flower not the nut so safe to use on a baby

If she is co sleeping you just need to be aware how hot she is getting over night Kez sleeps with me too (and my substantial weight ) once I come to bed she only needs a nappy and maybe a sheet. Kez sleeps on her side or back when in bed with me normally starts on her side when feeding but rolls onto her back, they say you should put them on their back but I usually fall asleep feeding at night The risk if cot death comes from over heating. Had a friend involved with the sleep studies in Bristol and Mums (as long as they are not over tired or under the influence of medication/drugs or alcohol) tend to be aware of baby getting too hot and move the sheets to create a draft.

EEC I so love not being pregnant too but I also miss my bump and feeling her move inside me, if you know what I mean. I feel really lost when she is too far away as if part of me is missing. My friend keeps holding her so I can eat etc and I know why she is doing it but part of me hates it. She also looked after her while I had my first physio appointment here and I was so tearful and felt as if part of me was missing

re milk you never totally empty your breast milk is constantly produced as it is emptied it just gets to the point it is coming out too slowly for them and they want more. It is harder to express milk because you do not have the let down reflex with a pump as you do not get the hormonal response. If you are trying to increase you supply I would try feeding 2-3 hourly during the day and 3 hourly at night (I set my alarm at night initially when Kez not gaining weight)you should have enough milk for a feed by 2 hours but not all babies will co operate with that. The night feed at midnight-2am is sadly important cos that's when your hormones are at there highest although you will not see in increase at that feed maybe the first civilised morning feed. But saying that it is a fine balance between stimulating your breasts to produce more and not being over tired. If you have a cooperative partner it may be worth having a weekend in bed skin to skin with your baby feeding 2-3 hourly if you can normally you can increase milk supply in 48 hours by doing that. If that will not work for you try doing skin to skin as often as you can during the day.

CilC · 07/08/2008 21:31

Oh poor you Disney.
My LO is also going all flakey...but DD did this too.
I am a real cow, I seem to be able to express loads. I do it at the same time as I feed Rafferty - machine on one, him on the other. He likes the hum sound! I tend to do it first feed in the morning. The amount i express has increased the more I do it. I do it once a day for DH to feed LO or if I am going out...still finding it hard to bf publicly due to size!!! I have never had a totally empty boob...and when I had to feed Raf in hospital I was able to express every 2 hours...like I said I am a real cow!

I took DD to baby massge and found all she did was wee herself. I did love swimming, baby signing and monkey music great fun. I plan to do the same with DS when he is a bit older. I find it easier to do things and get out of the house and luckily for me DD goes to nursery so I can do this. If DD was younger not sure how I would juggle!

Min having trouble accessing scrabulous!

Off to feed then sleep...night everyone

Kaz1967 · 07/08/2008 22:35

CilC we went to musical totz on Tuesday and enjoyed it was great to see other Mums next week I am going to try to get to baby peep too but not sure we will make it may wait until September when Kez is a little bigger but she really likes music

totally know what you mean about feeding in public with a little dignity due to size we are still using the rugby ball method and Kez is
a very very noisy
b inclined to list up my top while attached and expose me to the world
There is one shop in Boston (Oldrids) which has breastfeeding is welcome signs and they have bench type seats where you can kind of position your self to maintain a little dignity so that is normally where we end up when out.

Welcome MyDingaling and congratulations

Peanut73 · 07/08/2008 22:35

Welcome MyDingaling.

Hope everyone is well. I just don't find the time to post as regularly anymore. I'm finding Charlie really demanding at the moment. It's weird as he used to be this angel child who never cried, and was so uber-chilled, but he has now come into his own. I guess he was pre-term before and is now only meant to be 4 weeks old...

Disney - oh my goodness, that sounds horrible. Glad you're okay!

I am like CilC and seem to be able to express loads. 120ml from one breast . Don't hate me! But I reckon this is from being permanently attached to an industrial strength hospital pump for two weeks while Charlie was in hospital. My body had to produce milk without a baby to bring on the let-down reflex and back then I was expressing well over a pint a day.

Really thinking of everyone.
xx

ponto · 07/08/2008 22:42

CilC I am very of your expressing ability, I tried for the first time last night and only got 30ml or so, I was like this with dd1 and dd2 too. I am very keen to get Bryony used to a bottle so I can go out occasionally, but don't want to give formula regularly so want to get a supply of EBM for her. I don't really want to express when the older girls are watching, so it means I only get a chance in the evenings. At this rate, by the time I get enough stored up for her to have a daily bottle, she'll be several months old!

Can't remember who it was who said they were missing their older children, I really felt this last week when dh was looking after them most of the time. Now I've had a few days with them by myself I feel much more in touch with them again. Have coped fairly well, apart from this evening between 5 and 6pm when I was trying to make tea and had at least one child crying at all times, sometimes all 3 were crying! Poor Bryony got left to cry in her pram for a while as I decided that actually producing some food for the older girls would result in 2 out of 3 children being happy, whereas if I held her and stopped cooking, the other two would get more and more miserable.

I feel I may have had a breakthrough in getting Bryony to settle in the evening - I had been trying to do bath, feed and bed, but she was just ending up full of wind and miserable. So today I fed her before her bath, winded her well, then bathed her and rocked her off to sleep without feeding her again, and she has settled. I have had a lovely couple of hours enjoying dinner with dh, along with half a bottle of wine . Must now try not to fall asleep with Bryony in the bed during the night feeds.

JacobsPrincess · 07/08/2008 22:59

Managed to find you July ladies at last, but if you think I've got time to read over 400 messages then you are sorely mistaken!!
Dewi is doing really well and even slept for 7 hours last night. He's taken to feeding all evening, but I don't really mind if I'm getting a good nights sleep in return. I was starting to worry about him sleeping that long, but he is feeding well and putting on weight, so..?
Had an embarassment this afternoon. We went for a picnic at a local castle to celebrate my birthday, and I was feeding Dewi. I totally didn't notice the other breast leaking profusely! When I handed Dewi to DH and headed to the ladies to clean myself up, my boob was almost spurting milk out through my tshirt. I suppose it will teach me for letting him sleep!
DS1 has cracked potty training in one week (although he does get embarrassed by potty poos!) and is loving his new baby brother - he especially loves introducing him to everyone, even strangers ("This is my baby bruvver. His names Dewi. It's a Welsh name." is his standard patter!)
Hope everyone else is settling into Mummy-life!

pigleychez · 08/08/2008 09:07

Morning all,

Think we cracked Abigails sleeping last night. She has been kicking off in her moses basket and not sleeping in it so been researching and tried a few things out last night.

Tried swaddling but she wasnt impressed with that. Screamed and stuggled contantly to break free. Tried putting my tshirt into the basket with her to smell me but that didnt do much. Tried placing a folded blanket under the head end of the mattress to elevate her slightly which helped abit. Tried rolling up a couple of blankets and placing them around the sides of the basket making it feel more cosy. Looks like a little nest. Anyway slept for about 4 hours at a time in it which was fab

Jacobs- Happy birtday for yesterday
DS1 sounds very proud!

Itcanwait · 08/08/2008 11:36

Hi all-thanks for your words of welcome! Had a longish night with Kate last night. She generally sleeps from about 11.30-3/4 which I know is great at this stage but I really struggle to settle her back in the Moses basket after that. Was up until about 6 then. DH finally got her back to sleep and we had a lie in until 8,30. I've got the luxury of DH being at home this summer as he only works during term time so know I mustn't complain.

I'm finding it hard to give DS (4) enough time though and seem to feel guilty all the time.

Hope everyone else is doing well today.

CilC · 08/08/2008 11:40

I just wish we had a bit of sunshine...

Sophrosyne1 · 08/08/2008 12:21

Hi all,

I'm new to this thread as I only gave birth to my 1st baby, Hannah, on 29th July. I feel like I'm doing OK as a new mum but, because she was born very quickly H. had some fluid on her lungs and problems with her breathing. She was admitted to the neo-natal ward for her first night but returned to the maternity ward the next day. We had to stay in hospital for a week and arrived home on Monday. Since then I just keep worrying that there is something wrong and am in danger of becoming a nervous wreck. Does anyone else spend all their time worrying or is it just me?

Minkus · 08/08/2008 13:56

Welcome Sophrosyne, congratulations on Hannah's arrival! Sounds like you had a bit of a rough time, so not surprising that you're worried. WHat happened? Sory if a bit too much of a personal question . Worrying is part and parcel of being a mum. Trust your instincts- if the logical side of your brain is also telling you that there is really something wrong then get it checked it out. (But realise that logic and babies rarely go together so sorry if that doesn't help much!) You'll soon get into the routine of knowing what needs worrying about and what doesn't, you're only 10 days in so don't expect to know everything about this tiny new person yet- that's why midwives and health visitors are there, they realise that mums can't possibly know everything in the early weeks (and months!). Be kind to yourself xx

Blimey am so of you lot getting 4 hour stretches (or 7!!!!! Way to go Dewi!) Standard for little piggsy (so called because he snuffles snorts and grunts at my boobs so much) is 2 hrs, 3 if I'm lucky or 1.5 if I'm not. As he's now 5 weeks old I'm really surprised that I'm not falling over with exhaustion yet, yes I'm tired but it's not crippling. Yet .

Itcanwait- pigs is similar in that he won't settle in his moses basket after the last feed of the night (whenever that is). He comes into our bed at that point because it co-incides when I am most tired and therefore lazy! (Plus it's lovely having a snuggle with a plump sleepy baby). Is co-sleeping for this last part of the night something you could consider? More sleep for all involved.

Happy birthday jacobsprincess! Lol at hose pipe nipples

Ponto it was me who said about missing ds1, hadn't anticipated it. It's odd isn't it. Sympathies about all 3 crying at the same time . Also, I don't manage to get much milk out of my boobs in the evening, about 3oz is also my maximum for that time of the day. First thing (before 9am) is much much better.

I've not managed the gallons and gallons that CilC and Peanut get but managed 6oz this morning which I was rather proud of (boobs were literally dripping everywhere so took advantage and expressed after feeding the small piggy).

In fact off to get a drink now I'm parched after being leached of moisture every 120 minutes aaaargh. Monster post too sorry!

CilC · 08/08/2008 14:17

If it helps...my boobs have grown to a bra size I never knew existed, so while I may be expressing lots, the thought of how my boobs will look once dried up and back to normal makes me shudder...

Welcome Sophrosyne and ITcanwait. I agree - Mum = worry!

Happy birthday Jacobs!

Kaz1967 · 08/08/2008 14:37

ponto 30mls is fantastic amount to express don't knock it you honestly do not want too much or they are getting mainly for milk not the calorific hind milk

Sophrosyne1 congratulations and no you are not the only one to worry my first too and I do but I bet the 2nd + 3rd timers will be worrying about something too

Kaz1967 · 08/08/2008 14:40

Minkus Kez is another noisy feeder

libralady · 08/08/2008 15:24

I don't know how you ladies find the time to post so much. By the evening I am frazzled and it's as much as I can do to read the thread let alone post.

A very generic hello to everyone and hope everyone is doing OK. Welcome to the newbies and congratulations on the birth of your children.

Well I went to bed at 10pm last night and DH did the last feed. To say I was surprised when L had me up at 5am is a bit of an understatement. I actually felt refreshed from having nearly 7 hours sleep! Anyway once he was fed and sleeping contentedly in his moses basket needless to say I was wide awake from having had so much sleep so got up.

We bit the bullet on Wednesday after having had some horrendous nights. If we couldn't get L settled after his last feed I was so concerned about him keeping DH awake I would bring him downstairs and he would sleep in his pram and I would sleep on the sofa after a lengthy cuddle session. So we made the decision to put him in his own room. The last 2 nights have been a dream. He is only in the room next door and we do have one of those Angel monitors that senses movement as well as being able to hear him but I have definately slept better as has L. We've got a musical mobile on his cot with a light that shines on the ceiling with stars and moons and he is fascinated by it and sends him straight off to sleep.

Really couldn't believe yesterday. I went to our local Farm Park and got chtting to a lady sat next to me. Her little girl came to look at Luke thinking it was her baby brother. We just got chatting as all us mums tend to do especailly around newborns, and when she mentioned she ran a B&B and I heard her call Edie, I put 2 & 2 together and asked if she was Sophie ( one of the June Mums) and she said yes and guessed I was Libralady.

The fact that we were in the same area of the park at the same time is unbelievable.

Anyhow, we're planning on meeting up again in the near future and hopefully I'll get to meet Basil. He was at home being looked after by Daddy whilst I am presuming Sophie had some quality time with Edie.

I wish we could do this as although Sam is good most of the time, I do feel he is being left out whilst Luke takes up so much of my time. I do feel I need to spend some more 1:1 time with him, without the distraction of LO. DH is off in a couple of weeks so I'll see what I can do then.

Anyhow I've updated some of the photos on my profile and there is one of my Mum with my Nan on her 100th birthday last weekend. I'll upload some of the professional ones we had done of the family when I've figured the CD rom out.

Better go as Luke is creating.

sweetkitty · 08/08/2008 16:14

hello everyone well had a horrendous day yesterday B really unsettled all morning ended up with her in the sling then my friend came round with her 2 boys 3 and 1, the 1 yo isn't walking yet but can crawl upstairs and we don't have stairgates anymore, the 3yo was a devil child scratched DD1 in the face, flooded my downstairs toilet, kept saying he was hungry then mushing any food into the carpet and stealing bread. Then to cap it all DP and I had an argument he wants to do more at weekends but what? he wants to do more by himself ??!!as we can't do things together. He keeps saying I need to get out more but where and how exactly? We don't have anyone to babysit so can't go out together.

Anyway moan over baco to babies, still haven't gave B a bottle don't have time to express. Agree with however said having 3 crying at once is a nightmare, feel like I want to clone myself.

B not too bad at night last feed at 10-11ish then to about 2 then one other waking we cosleep so it's easier. Agree with boobs never being empty I have small boobs and can make loads of milk I'm always leaking onto tops

libralady - thats mad meeting another mumsnetter

minkus - aww little piggy I'm constantly thirsty too

soph - hello and welcome

pigley - good you got some sleep last night too

hello to everyone else too am tping this one handed and little miss is getting annoyed time to get boobs out again

libralady · 08/08/2008 16:31

SK thought you'd been quiet. Sorry to hear about your mad day yesterday. Your DP sounds a little like mine. Men who'd have 'em?

JacobsPrincess · 08/08/2008 18:53

Minkus loving piggsy's nickname. We call Dewi our little Trufflepig for the same reasons - always snorting, grunting and truffling around in my cleavage!

CilC · 08/08/2008 20:12

omg we call Rafferty trufflepig also! You should watch him sniff. He is hillarious!

pigleychez · 08/08/2008 20:14

hehe Abigail is a little piggy too.

She makes all kinds of odd snuffling, oinking noises!

Abigails nickname is Dyson though... Because of her super strong suck!!

Kaz1967 · 08/08/2008 21:39

libralady only way i can post is one handed typing while little miss scoffs

CilC · 09/08/2008 07:34

I think we should ban capital letters and unnecessary symbols and punctuation that requires more than one hand to execute so we can all type one handed while feeding our LOs
