TGF, watch what you say about BS10 - that's where I used to live!!

I used to live in Woodside Grove, Henbury, just opposite Henbury Comprehensive school. Was a lovely area when I lived there (of course!) but don't know what it's like now. The school is supposed to be terrible though - used to be an excellent school but Bristol suffers from a huge number of private schools so the state schools can be a bit crap.

spongebrainbigpants · 01/08/2008 17:42

if you click on this link my old house then scroll down there's a bird's eye view of my old close - our house is the bottom right of the picture, 2nd one in!

you're making me all nostalgic!

hedgehog1979 · 01/08/2008 17:55

neenz glad esthers op went well

libra feel free to rant and vent on here

really jealous of all you west country girls making me feel all nostalgic about when I lived at home (Taunton) wish I could persuade DH to relocate back over there, but being that we have only been here for 3 years, don't think he is ready yet.

Is anyone in the W.Sussex/Surrey area who fancies a meet up? or if you London Ladies are meeting up again would I be able to tag along- its only about 40 mins for me into Victoria, but not sure if I shall brave it yet

Really need to go and express now as my right boob feels like it is about to explode but baby asleep on me and don't really want to disturb him

spongebrainbigpants · 01/08/2008 17:57

hedgehog, I was born in Taunton!

Great cider!

The west country is a great place to live but it's far too close to my MIL to consider going back there!

alipalli · 01/08/2008 18:04

All was going well here when I posted at 10am, in fact up until 11.30 we had inadvertently followed Gina to the letter. After that things went a bit Pete Tong. By 3pm Peter was screaming his head off despite being fed and clean. Fixed the problem by getting in the car and going for a drive ( I did take Peter with me). He fell asleep as soon as I picked the car seat up, so I probably didn't need to spend £30 in Mothercare . He is still asleep now, so have even managed to express, do the washing up, and phone my Mum.

Completely agree with people about going out being better than staying in. Yesteday we were out from 10.30am to 5.45pm and it was so much easier than today.

Penguin after our chat yesterday about green poos in nappies, Peter produced his most spectacular effort yet. Just think of jar of pesto. TMI - apologies. Slightly alarmed I searched the MN archives, most likely theory is that this is due to too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk. It makes sense given the snacking he was doing all yesterday (my fault not his)

poppy34 · 01/08/2008 18:12

allipallifingers crossed he is perfect gina baby for rest of day.. its weird how we get fascinated by poo

TaurielTest · 01/08/2008 18:25

Thanks for the welcome back - yes I was an occasional poster and frequent reader on the antenatal creme eggs threads!
Poo fascination here too - such an amazing shade of yellowy-orange, who knew?!
AlliPalli nice to see another Peter, it's surprisingly unpopular for such an old-school name (not in top 100 even) - it wasn't actually on our list of names for a boy, but when he was born my DP oddly instinctively wanted to call him that, and over the next few days it grew on us both until it was indisputably his name.
He is a little star but has terrible digestion - he feeds for about 45 minutes, which is lovely, then takes the same length of time to wind properly (which I confess I find both difficult and boring to do). Any winding tips? The HV has referred me for baby massage...
BDQ I had my first glass of white wine in over two years (long time TTC) a couple of weeks ago and I came out in a rash all round my mouth and neck, aaigh! Will have to try gin instead

hedgehog1979 · 01/08/2008 18:28

SBBP Crawley is too close to my MIL really but DH is happy here

poppy and alipalli also fascinated by poo,
Isaac is going to be 6 weeks on Tuesday and his poohing has slowed down, ie not 1 per feed, is this normal?

alipalli do like being out and about, but am at lack of parent and child parking spaces or people with older kids parking in them and also at quality of some of the baby changing facilities available, although I have no probs with BF in public, may have to start changing him in pram as today was in coffee republic, they only have a disabled toilet which was out of order as the key had broken in the door , luckily DH works v v centrally in town so can change him there.

spongebrainbigpants · 01/08/2008 18:37

puddock, belated birth congrats, I also like the name - it's Alexander's middle name as it's my dad's name. I wanted it for Alex's first name but family politics prevailed!

hedgehog, so with you on lack of parking spaces and changing facilities. I'm appalled! I get so worried when I park up and take him out of his car seat that I'm going to come back and find someone parked right next to me and won't be able to open door wide enough to get him back in!

We have a coffee shop in town where all the mums and babies congregate - but no changing mat anywhere! And where there are changing facilities they are often dirty and dingy. Something you never notice til you're a parent I suppose and then you don't have the energy to do anything about it!

Essie3 · 01/08/2008 19:43

Hi all! Absent due to being a single parent for 3 nights, but DH is back now (despite me threatening divorce for leaving me holding the baby...literally!) I feel really bad because he fell over in Cardiff today (ironic, because his work is people tripping over!) and has injured himself - nothing broken, but some very serious bruising. Poor guy.
So, news from Essieland. Saw the BF counsellor again yesterday - all is well, and she congratulated me because when she saw me at 2 weeks, she thought (quietly) that I was a top candidate for mastitis so I've managed well between pumping and feeding. She told me lots of very interesting anthropological things about bf - mums get endorphins too which is why it's hard to read a book etc when feeding.

Today met with a friend for coffee, and Iestyn did the biggest poo I've ever seen just before I left. I decided to change him after I got back too, and he had outdone himself, with even more poo - probably his own bodyweight in his nappy. And now I'm desperately trying to dry loads of nappies and it's the wettest day here. Going to London tomorrow so need loads.

London ladies - may I announce my arrival in the Capital tomorrow evening? I'll be around all week if you fancy a meet up. Hedgehog I'm stupid but is Surrey near Croydon? Because Croydon is handy for me in the car (I used to go to Ikea...)

Amberc · 01/08/2008 19:47

I still can't believe that BF babies do a poo per feed!!!!! Luke does one a day in the morning after his first bottle. It is however mahooosive and he goes purple in the face for about 5 mins before straining to get it out. Erm...did I just write that? If I'd have thought i'd be posting on a mums forum about poo before I was preggers I may have thought twice (actually saying that there's a lot I would have thought twice about knowing what I know now!!). DP has taken Luke to his great grans and will be out until 10 - it's like heaven at home!! I can post on the internet and am watching telly at a normal volume not really quiet so I don't wake the baby

Libra - I know how you feel - they told me I was borderline PND and you know what, i don't know a single mum who in the early days would have answered any differently with the sleep deprivation. I'm surviving on 2-3 hours sleep a night other than night nanny days and it's soul destroying.

Amberc · 01/08/2008 19:49

PS Essie - let's definitely meet with Alipali and PP (and anyone else in London) next week xxx

Amberc · 01/08/2008 19:52

PPS Got Luke his new cotbed which is massive seeing as he kept getting his arms and legs caught in the crib railings. Put him in it for the first time last night and would you believe it - he did the same bloody thing - woke me up at 1am howling to be freed. How the hell did he manage it?! (i'll shut up now...)

spongebrainbigpants · 01/08/2008 20:11

Amber, totally with you on the ff poo - and Luke sounds exactly like Luke on the straining and groaning before it all comes out!

Lovely subject for conversation!

debinaustria · 01/08/2008 22:33

On the poo conversation, Ethan is bfed and goes days without pooing.

Amber sounds like you're having a good night without your men! Ethan sleeps through anything and just as well with 2 older brothers, we've never reduced the volume around any of them when sleeping, life just goes on, rather noisily in this household.

Libra - don't blame you for your response about the pnd - you must be shattered. Hope the Birthday party goes well.

Essie - well done with the bfeeding, you must feel very proud of yourself.

Ethan has been a feeding machine today, I feel like I've been constantly feeding him, our eldest - Stefan(8) said today to me" this must be the happiest time of your life Mummy with us 2 and the baby, and you can sit down a lot" - i.e when feeding Ethan!!

I must get to bed now as Ethan has been asleep since 10 so I could get 2.5 hours if I'm lucky before the night time feeds start again!! The nights do seem endless sometimes don't they, he wakes up and I look at the clock each time in the hope that he has gone longer than 1.5-2 hours but I'm usually disappointed

debinaustria · 01/08/2008 22:35

Amber - is Luke in a sleeping bag or is it too hot? I found that when I put ds1 in a sleeping bag he couldn't move round the cot as easily and wake himself up. I know they're not rolling yet but Ethan can move himself diagonally - just started today. Just an idea.

hedgehog1979 · 02/08/2008 08:52

morning all, quick post as we are off to gay pride in brighton today to meet lots of dh's ex girlf's - from his school days!!!

isaac slept 11 - 6 last night, lets hope it wasn't a one off!!!!

essie was in ikea croydon when lo was 6 days old so know it well!! Unfortunately I am heading to the West Country next week to see my parents and my family, and also to try and encourage my SIL who is 5 days overdue to give birth, She reckons that holding a baby will start her Labour!!!

Right need to go and arrange baby's stuff for a day out!!

ktpie · 02/08/2008 10:19

Just a quick hello, not posted for ages but still lurk via my phone, great to read what you are all up to.

Jonathan has changed tactics with poo, was doing 2 huge ones a day with lots of sound effects, now pretty much every time he is fed and in between he has impressive explosive sounding farts. We rush to change him and it is either a massive poo or nothing, you can't tell from the sound or his reaction anymore!

Feel like I am settling in to things now, managing to get things done during the day while I am on my own which is a little achievement for me!

Better go I can hear him crying!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/08/2008 12:01

Hey ktpie - welcome back. I'm starting to feel like I can get things done now too, although DH has still been off work so who knows what'll happen when he goes back to work...

Hedgehog - my lo's very first outing was to Ikea!

Re: changing while out and about... I got a lovely soft fabric changing mat via the nappy lady website which is much more cosy for changing in horrible toilets than the plastic ones that come in most bags (or could be put on top of a plastic one if there was no proper changing facilities). It was only a few pounds. I've also now taken to keeping a pack of milton wipes in my bag so I can wipe down anywhere I need to change S.

Puddock - hoping you find a solution to the wine rash!

Last night S wouldn't settle after his 7pm feed and eventually I gave him got him out of his moses basket and he fell asleep in my arms at 9.30pm. We couldn't rouse him for love nor money for his late evening feed so eventually put him back down about 11.30pm and went to bed, fully expecting to be woken up within the hour. He slept all the way till 3am, which is what time he normally wakes for a feed?!?! Now, if we can just get him to go from 11pm till 7am instead of 7pm till 3am I'll be a very happy mummy...

thegreenfairy · 02/08/2008 13:17

Hi all
sponge henbury has sadly gone down hill a bit - you're right about the school. But it's still a very pretty area, just could use a boost really. i used to live in westover road, on the westbury/ henbury border and it was v peaceful

needahand BS9 is good - westbury on trym - quite posh . You need to watch which side tho - email me street names if you like. Some of it is right next to southmead, which is v ropey, and minor trouble can spill over.

amber storm does indeed do a poo per feed, if not more - v annoying! sometimes i have to change her three times! have taken to always using a cloth nappy when i change her during a feed as i know it's not going to be a keeper!

all wellwishers she seems to be over the worst of the thrush, but deffo doesn't like her medecine! have been following some online advice about sterilising nipples and her bum with vinegar solution and taking a probiotic supp as well. GP just gave me the cream and waved me out of the door, but it can take two weeks to clear AFTER the symptoms have gone - which she'd told me!

FYI mild thrush symptoms
i thought this would be useful for you all as with hindsight i've had it for weeks and didn't know it -

  • her clicking her lips when BF
  • trouble latching on
  • sore nipples (i thought it was from the mega feeding)
  • shooting pains in armpits
  • sugar cravings
  • tiredness (haha)
FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/08/2008 14:55

Its me Sophie, changed my name as bored with the other one, still lurking busy with B&B. I get to meet LauraT in a month.

Amberc · 02/08/2008 16:47

deb put Luke in a sleeping bag ,ast night as I have some 0.5 tog ones and he didn't get stuck but did go diagonally! Sealed up all the railings with blankets too just in case.

Convinced Luke has colic now after reading Miriam stoppard's definition - 6 weeks: peak time, crying between 4-6pm, purple face, legs pulled up etc, inconsolable by ANYTHING!

Got the Red Bull air race planes practicing outside - sooo noisy - this must be like the blitz!

Parofleurmapu · 02/08/2008 18:15

Hiya all

Nice to see that people are getting better etc and getting some kind of routtine

Re routies mine is sure to go out window now in next couple of days as we are going away on hols for 5 days just to the south of the island but wil be relaxing by pool and eating out loads.
So hope all goes wwell in next few days for everybody and il see you when we get back

Sophie now 5 go maad!! Glad your still lurking, id like us all to try and stay even if we do lurk a bit more !!!

bitofadramaqueen · 02/08/2008 18:43

Evening all... S has been v grumpy this afternoon. Just had him screaming for 2 hours while DH went to Sainsbury's and did some chores. DH has now taken him for a walk to give me a break, which I'm now going to spend expressing... Groan.

Anyone else feel like having a newborn baby is like something out of groundhog day? Get up, feed baby, express, chores, feed, express, shower, dressed, lunch, visitors, feed, screaming baby (once visitors have left), feed, express, up and down to baby while trying to eat tea, feed, express, sleep, feed at 3am...

I want to go out for a walk with baby and leave DH to express

Re: sleeping bags - I got some 0.5 ones, but our bedroom has consistently been above 25 degrees so have just had S in a body suit and a sheet.

Have fab holiday paro. Amber - sorry Luke seems colicky. You have my sympathies!! Have you tried infacol?

ktpie · 02/08/2008 20:17

I've become a hypochondriac, now I am sure we have thrush!

DQ - you missed off change nappies!

Some nights this week we have been very bad and have put J to bed in a babygro with a muslin over the top as a sheet, he didn't seem to bothered, but I guess a sheet would have been better!

Got to go, he needs feeding.
