Just a quick read through, someone mentioned that Gina Ford says babies can sleep through the night when they are 5kg, Ethan was measured today at his 6 week check and he is 65 cms long and weighs 5.9kg, about 13lbs. However he doesn't sleep through the night!!

We can manage one long stint from when he 1st goes down, about 8-12 or 9-1 ish but then after that we're back to 2 hourly feeds and very windy/gripy from 5.30 onwards. Any tips?

debinaustria · 30/07/2008 21:25

BDQ - sounds like you're having a rough time of it tonight, I hope it improves for you

alipalli · 30/07/2008 22:10

Quick post as need to go to bed....In fact need to go now as Peter has woken up.

Looking forward to seeing the London ladies tomorrow!!

ThePenguinProject · 30/07/2008 22:27

BDQ, Fungle and Greenfairy - Hope your nights improve, sounds like you're all having a hard time. Sending lots of positive vibes your way.

Neenz (aka vibrating recliner queen) - Thus far Ryder seems ambivalent towards his recliner. Maybe because there are no vibrations yet as it needs CCC batteries, (never heard of them before).

Deb - No tips I'm afraid. Ryder does normally wake up just once or twice, but that is due to pure luck - nothing to do with me. It did all go wrong when I tried to follow a routine during the day, so went back to just doing what he wants, when he wants and we're all happy again.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow AliP and Amber.

Parofleurmapu · 30/07/2008 22:55

Evening all
Hope night shifts go well, Fleur has slept from 7.30 til now so Dp now giving her a feed which should last her til 2am hopefully.

Debs - Good to see you back, Hows the thinking about moving back going? How long have you been in Austria and did you think it would be a permanent thing originally? Sorry if too nosey just interested as im a fellow expt too!!
All the books etc i have suggest two things: by the time babies are 5kg or 2 months 1. drop the night feed and 2. put on a four hour routine. Well Fleur is now both of those(5kg and 2mths) and not acheiving either. So i think HV was wrong and MW right,as someone on here said, I cant remeber who, It depends on the baby.

Thanks neenz for tips will try them but deep down i think she still really needs the feed, its just my guilty sleep deprived mind that hopes that maybe she doesnt! (hangs face with shame)

BDQ- a sucessful shopping spree, thank you! Sorry bout your jeans but i have to say (and hanging face with shame again and running away before being pellted by angry mob!!!) I got a size 14 pair of jeans !!! which is one size less than pre pregnancy and i reckon 2 since i got pregnant so dead chuffed.
Glad S settled eventually, fingers crossed for a good night

TGF - hope storm ok soon Fleur has her injections tomorrow at 13.30 so hoping that all goes well.
Also think her gums could be getting ready for teeth!! as she is dribbling loads and chewing on my boobs, ouch! I got her a teething rattle today and she nearly chewed it to bits!!

Allnew hope you dont have infection i unfornunately do and its not nice

Haha sponge and HH, re poo! i can hear fleur having an explosive one upstairs with Dp right now

Well mega long post again,

Hi to those i havent answered personally today,

off to watch end of the film Jumper, if you manage to get a moment to watch a film it is very good

thegreenfairy · 30/07/2008 23:59

Night all
Well, I have thrush in my left nipple but Storm fine - GP said probably just the after effects of the jab - slight temp but that's all.

She managed to get some calpol in her (a two person job - one to insert syringe, the other to hold mouth shut!). Storm since had a okayish feed but refused my dodgy nipple completely - expressed 4oz and she took 1oz which DH had to practically squirt down her throat!

She's conked out now. GP said she was ok but deffo needed more fluid, so I will wake her at 4am if she doesn't stir - but I hope she'll take my left nipple soon or am going to get a wonky milk supply!

Good luck to all with probs. No time to catch up properly today/ tomorrow but will check in more thoroughly on Friday.
Ttfn!

debinaustria · 31/07/2008 07:55

Morning all

TGF - hope Storm woke for a feed and fed from your sore nipple.

paro - yes we did intend this to be a long term move, we've been here almost 3 years.we still have to get a few more valuations and then we'll put the house on the market.

last night ethan woke at 1, 3, 5 - was grizzly for an hour or so before finally dropping off again in my arms on the breast.just wish i could drop the 3 am feed.

enjoy your meet up london ladies - i'm

TJuice · 31/07/2008 08:29

hi all

deb - sounds like my routine! although Elodie has had two ok nights (11pm to 2.30-3.30 and then 6.30). it coincided with me putting a top that I have worn in the cot with her (suggestion of my HV). Also been trying to feed her up loads during the day.

talking of explosive poo, she did a massive one down my trousers yesterday, in a shopping mall.

I had been sitting there feeling all pleased with myself because I had just seen Sex and the City at Baby Cinema and she had been super good. Then some lady had walked past and said "Cute!" so I was preening and then got dumped on!

when i got home, i had poo on my cool, indian baggy trousers, breastmilk stains down my vest top and a patch of sticky, dried sick on my shoulder that I had missed!

hedgehog1979 · 31/07/2008 08:29

good morning all

paro glad i am not the only one in smaller size than pre preg

BDQ Son and DH got back from the pub around 6.30 - both demanding feeding typical men

TGF symapthies on the thrush, I have had the pain of that too so big hugs

Deb sympathies re the feeding, If I put Isaac down before 10 we follow I similar pattern, If I can keep him up until after 10 then he will go til 3.30/4 what is that all about?

London Ladies enjoy your meet up today.

Am off to Tesco later (will walk, as long as weather is not too bad) and as there is a starbucks there have a slight ulterior motive

bitofadramaqueen · 31/07/2008 08:35

Morning all,

Thankfully after his 10.30 feed S went down for the night ok and was just up for one feed. DH was on the 3am shift last night so I did get some sleep. Will keep persevering with getting him to have a sleep between 7pm and 10pm.

Paro well done on your shopping (if a little ). Once DH goes back to work I'm hoping I get out for some brisk walks a bit more often...

Hi Deb - good to see you back. Sorry to hear your having to feed 3 times a night. Hope that settles down soon.

Ta for positive vibes PP. I think S's chair might have the same batteries. Am sure DH mentioned something about 'C'. S is on second set so DH has been moaning that they v expensive!

Right, chores to do, bottles to make up (am loving making them in advance so thanks Sponge et al for the advice). Off to meet the NCT girls later today.

Upsidedowncake · 31/07/2008 10:15

Have fun in Waterloo, London ladies. Sorry not to make it but it's a bit hectic with DS's new nursery and the reflux. (DD was sick not 10 minutes after I posted on here that she hadn't been for three days!)

She fed for England yesterday so am knackered today - and grumpy.

DQ, sounds like you had a good night

TGF, sorry about the thrush. It seems very common and very painful. Glad the GP helped you with Calpol.

Debs, glad you are back with us, and hope that valuations are positive and you are able to make the move you want

Hedgehog, are you still on iron pills? How are you feelign?

Tjuice, slummy mummy moment.

ThePenguinProject · 31/07/2008 10:35

I need to ask a silly qu - by night feed do you guys mean the am feed or the dreamfeed (around 10-11pm)? Also when people refer to sleeping through the night, does that mean 7pm - 7am or say 10.30pm - 7am?

Paro - Your LO is two weeks older than mine, so guess that I'll lose a zillion stone and be in a size zero jeans within the next two weeks ... Maybe not. Still can't fit into some of my early pregnancy clothes.

hedgehog1979 · 31/07/2008 13:20

udc am still taking the iron, but in an effort to get things moving downstairs i spoke to a GP friend of mine and she said I could drop down to 1 a day. Have had a letter from the hospital advising me that I am anaemic and to see my GP after I had already seen him!!

Some exciting activity in the Hedgehog household today, fabric arrived to allow me to make a wrap sling (or 2) to enable Isaac and I to get out and about on the train a bit more, just waiting for him to fall asleep now so I can practice tying it

makecakesnotwar · 31/07/2008 13:51

HI all- just checking in. I have vaguely been following chat and thank you all for your lovely messages of support.

I'm getting there slowly- GP pleased with my progress so tablets obviously working. It doesn't help that I get broken sleepp of course, but we all know what that's like

CJ doing well, and we finally had the appointment dates through for our 8 week checks and her jabs...they are in two weeks when she will be 12 weeks old! She seems to be in a good routine during the day but is a bugger to get to sleep betweem 7pm and 10.30pm. She goes dow fine then, but seems to struggle to go (and stay) asleep after the 4am feed so I usually end up taking the easy way out and bringing her into bed with me. DH still sleeping in a different room on school nights, so there's plenty of room. But any suggestions would be greatly received...

I miss being able to chat all day like we did before she arrived. I feel I miss out a lot more these days. Oh well....xxx

aberdeenhiker · 31/07/2008 14:21

neenz - I'm a rotten pumper, I pump first thing in the morning from one side right after I've fed Fraser on the other side and I still only get 2 oz in 30 min. I know it'd be faster with an electric pump, but from DS1, I know I wont get much more volume. My boobs can tell the difference between a baby and plastic

whinegums · 31/07/2008 14:31

Deb, don't know if this will help, or if you've already tried - B was also being v grumpy around early evening feed, then followed by an hour of solid screaming before he would just spark out with exhaustion. We haven't had any routine at all up til now, and I've just been feeding him in the living room letting him sleep on the sofa and then taking him to bed. So last night when I could see he was getting restless and ready for feeding I took him into the bedroom, closed the curtains and put night lights on. I fed him, he always stops half way through, so I winded him and changed him, put him in his grobag and then continued to feed him, then into his crib. I did end up going back to him twice, to get him settled, but he wasn't really upset, and then he slept til about 1.30am. Sorry if I'm trying to show you how to suck eggs, you're much more ahead of this game than I am, but thought it might be worth posting. I just felt that B was getting too much stimulation at that time of night.

Saying that, he has been a bit fractious all morning, and has only calmed down now that I have put him in his bouncy chair between the washing machine and tumble drier!

Makecakes, lovely to see you popping in, so glad you are starting to feel better.

DQ - hope you get there in the end with S and sleep.

Hedgehog, and anyone else going through the same thing, I am still freaked out by the post baby poos (or lack of them), another thing no one tells you about! Apologies to anyone easily offended, I haven't enjoyed a decent 'movement' since B was born. Am really upping my fibre intake!!!!

Hope the London ladies have a good meet up today, and all is well with everyone else.

josey · 31/07/2008 14:33

hi all just a very quick post sorry havent read to catch up yet.

We have been for an EEG this morning and the difference from the one 5weeks ago is amazing ok so its still not "normal" but there are constant responses, I have to wait another 2 weeks for results but we saw this one and last one on screan and it doesnt take a bright sprak to see the change. They also tested her with a strobe light and she didnt react

Also we are starting bottle feeding, just for 5mins at each feed and she is managing approx an 0z...her suck is still pretty crap so when we build her tollerance she may just be spoon fed or cup fed(special needs cup thingy)

8 week check tomorrow and jabs tuesday, hoping they make her cry evil mummy laugh! I have to say im getting FKed off with appointments.

Will catch up properly later love to all.

Josie57 · 31/07/2008 15:59

Josey - good to see you checking in and great news with Olivia's progress you must be really pleased.

PP - I read/was told that sleeping through the night is considered to be six hours at some point between 10 and 6 but to me I consider it to be from when they go down for the night i.e 10 and then through to a civilised waking time which I guess is anytime after 6 although I could be convinced that civilised for a newborn is after 5am. I would expect our babies to be doing this kind of sleeping through way before they are doing the 7-7 sleep through. My ds was sleeping through for a number of months before we dropped the dream feed - but I was worried that if we stopped the dream feed then he would start waking during the night so it seemed easier to keep up the dream feed.

Have just been to the doctor for my 6 week check and she wants me to go back for a scan to check that my problems with part of the placenta and membranes being retained have all cleared themselves. It's going to feel weird going for a scan when I am not pregnant. The thought of it is making me feel kind of broody even though Emma is only 6 weeks - I must be mad and I do hope my dh doesn't read this!!!!! Anyone else had any thoughts of having another one????

pleasechange · 31/07/2008 16:42

josey glad to hear that Olivia is making more progress

greenfairy sorry to hear about the thrush, hope it clears up soon

penguin I'm not yet fitting into any of my early pregnancy clothes

We had a major achievement her last night, actually got A to sleep in his moses basket after each feed. Feel a bit at those of you getting anywhere near sleeping all the way through - A is still waking every 2-3 hours.

Feeding seems to be regressing - A has learned to use his arms/hands and while is trying to grab my boob when feeding, he actually pushes it out of his mouth instead. Short of holding his arms and not letting him move them during feeds, I'm at a loss to know what to do. This morning's feed was v frustrating for him and me, and I felt bad as he just seemed to be getting angry with me

fungle · 31/07/2008 16:48

Well my night was greatly improved!
Isla slept from 8 - 1, had a breastfeed then back to sleep until 4, 2oz bottlefeed then sleep until 7! So good.
Is anyone else mixed feeding?? Im thinking that that is the road for me, have done it today and she seems a lot more content.
BF first thing, formula 9.30, BF midday and 2.30ish, then Im thinking im going to do the same as yesterday which is the 5ish and 7ish feed formula. Im not too sure if there are any 'rules'. Am going to see the health visitor next week
Have felt relativly normal due to a bit of sleep last night! Think I'll celebrate, best freind is coming round soon after picking DD up from nursery with a bottle of wine!
Completley different note, has anyone else got the new coldplay album? Its fab!

hedgehog1979 · 31/07/2008 16:53

allnew have you tried swaddling him for feeds? it traps [evil mummy here] his arms and prevents you getting pinched/scratched/fustrated.

josey really pleased about olivias progress

josie have already thought about when we will ttc no 2 (prob this time next year)

whinegums even 2 bowls of branflakes a day are not helping me, i would kill for a decent movement!!

still waiting for him to fall asleep so i can 'play' with my new fabric!!

bitofadramaqueen · 31/07/2008 18:15

Fungle - I'm mixed feeding but its with EMB and FF as DS wouldn't take to the breast so a bit different from you. The main problem with mixed feeding is maintaining your milk supply - I think the advice would be to express whenever he has a formula feed or your supply will start to diminish.

Expecting visitors so need to dash! Makecakes - good to hear from you.

PiggyPenguin · 31/07/2008 18:35

Allnew, I have this problem with the baby pushing himself off the breast too. I tend to tuck one arm under my arm on the side he feeding (ie. if he is on my right breast I tuck his left arm under my right arm) and then I hold on to his free hand with my free hand (ie. if he is on my right breast I hold his right hand with my left hand) This seems to work quite well, and now we have been doing it for a while he actually searches for my hand with his free hand and then feeds holding on to my finger which is very sweet.

poppy34 · 31/07/2008 20:03

fungle -like bdq am mixed feeding although am less concerned re milk supply (after nearly 6 weeks of blocked duct I am a bit about it)... I offer breast first for daytime feeds then top up.. but do ebm or ff for night feeds (tend to use ebm at 11pm feed and ff for the 4am feed)...thb edie happier with bottle so tends to work best if on ff/ebm esp if tired or under the weather.

debs ... no tips but have similar problem (edie bit younger and smaller)...anything that stops the weight lifter type wind noises would be welcome.

josey that is good news re olivia

TaurielTest · 31/07/2008 20:26

PUDDOCK - baby boy; Peter; born 21/6/08; 7lb 15.
Any room for a straggler? Only found this thread last week (not much internet time with a delightful but hard-work baby) and it's taken me this long to read through. Very pleased to read of Olivia's crying, Essie's new job and all the other news.
Am very envious of all those who can express decent quantities; my little Medela can only coax about 30-40ml from me each morning, which scarcely seems worth it, but it's useful to give him his Colief - and I still live in hope that one day there'll be enough that his one bottle feed (at 1am from his dad) could be EBM instead of Cow&Gate... It would make me seriously doubt my milk supply if he wasn't gaining weight and filling nappies.
