Hi - anyone fancy making up a thread for babies born this month? My dd (child no 4 ) was born on 6th Jan - I have had a rough time so far with feeding (cracked nipples etc) but things have started to improve now (I think). if only I could get her to sleep at night....

Hi everyone, hope you dont mind someone new joining the thread???? I'm fairly new to the site and just came across this thread thanks to help from suss on another thread. I have dd (first baby) born on 15th January. Looks full of good advice so gonna go have a wee read through and maybe pick up lots good tips.

Luckie · 07/11/2005 17:15

Welcome Lynn C!
I haven't been on here for ages and now DS has finally started to crawl (well sort of drag himself around in the cutest possible way). We took him swimming for the first time a couple of weeks ago and he absolutely loved it - he didn't mind if he got splashed and wasn't even bothered that the water was a little cool.
He also enjoyed watching the fireworks from the safety of his bedroom window - he kept going "fffffffffffff" and "pup-pup-pup".

dizzymama · 07/11/2005 20:25

Hi LynnC and welcome, this thread is so very useful, as is the rest of the site! Enjoy.
Thanks suss for info on milk, I tried to give her her midday bottle today but she didn't touch it!

dizzymama · 07/11/2005 20:27

Sorry, forgot to ask....E in big pain with teeth at the moment and I'm giving her half a sachet of that ibuprofen typr stuff (quite strong and can only take 5ml in any one day)my friend told me I could give her calpol alongside this as it is a different type of medication - does anyone know if I really can?

suss · 07/11/2005 20:43

I wouldn't mix pain meds without consulting a doctor. I know there are some you can mix but apparently it is not good for grown ups let alone little ones. If teething is bad esp at night try Medised as it has a decongestant which makes them v sleepy and so sleep better. Hi Lynn glad you could make it, hope you get some sleep tonight. Started IVF cycle today. As I was putting the needle in I was thinking I'm completely mad but DS is so gorgeous (esp when he is well rested, which happens in fits and spurts!) that I get broody just looking at him.

Luckie · 08/11/2005 14:32

Good luck with the IVF suss. My DS is an IVF miracle too!

dizzymama · 09/11/2005 20:10

Thanks suss, will speak to doctor at my next clinic appointment, teeth seem to be a bit better so haven't had to resort to more medication yet, but medised sounds great, will be looking it up

Witchycat · 09/11/2005 21:27

Dizzymama - I've heard that too & I'm pretty sure you can alternate ibuprofen based meds with paracetomol ones but must admit have never tried & worth checking with GP or chemist.

Have you tried teething gel? - you can use that something like every 20 minutes. Seems to help my dd who's got about 4 teeth in the last 6 weeks.

suss · 10/11/2005 13:52

Thanks luckie. Wonder if anybody has a problem sleeper, DS goes to sleep ok, can go back to sleep ok , but won't nap for long enough during the day and then gets overtired and then wakes at night. If he does sleep well during the day, night time sleep is so much better. its not teeth, or poo he just wakes and I don't know what to do. I know I am probably being fussy, but when he doesn't sleep well he is grotty and miserable.

dizzymama · 10/11/2005 17:55

Bought some more teething gel today witchycat - does your little one just lick it off though? This is what dd seems to do - I wonder how much of it stays on the gums long enough to benefit!!
E has been going through a phase of waking at least 2 or 3 times in the night, I know her teeth are bad, but she'll do this even when she's having a 'good tooth' day. It does tend to happen when she has point blank refused one of her daytime naps. Sometimes there is no choice but to get up and go in - if she sounds really upset - but other times I just stand outside the door and she - again, sometimes! - calms down on her own. If anyone has foolproof tips for dealing with this though, like suss, I'd be happy to hear! My method seems a bit hit and miss!

Witchycat · 10/11/2005 20:17

Dizzymama - she doesn't seem to lick the gel off but pulls the wierdest faces & sort of smacks her lips. It's more use at night when she's too tired to be bothered by the odd taste. It seems to 'take the edge' off long enough for us to rock her back to sleep.

Sleep-wise Lily is pretty good these days. She was terrible though while I was still b/f in the night. I wouldn't advocate stopping feeding if you still want to but for me working full time I just had to get her to break the habit (because I was convinced that's what it was)by not feeding at night. We just gave her less attention each time she woke and it seemed to work although if she has ann 'off night' I still go into her after a few minutes if she's crying still.

I don't think there is a fool-proof method !

fairi · 10/11/2005 21:12

I've been out of mumsnetting action for a while, and still need to catch up on this thread since I posted last... but in the mean time, I'd like to catch up with where the development of your littlies is at the mo... sounds like teething is quite a feature...

Mine (born on 5 Jan) has 3 teeth now, with most of his top gum bulging for impeding eruption! He started crawling a month ago - and is now extremely active... beelining for the loo or dustin or anything else he can't have or will make a mess of. He adores his elder brother (2yrs 3mnths) and they play together well now... crawling around the house in laughter. Baby's personality is really coming out now. Its such a cute age!

suss · 11/11/2005 21:07

I know there is no foolproof method to help, I hope he will grow out of it, don't really want him to be 21 and waking up and crying! I just wanted to know if others had similar sleep patterns. He definitely sleeps better at night if he has had good naps.

LynnC · 14/11/2005 12:05

Hi everyone and thanks for the welcome. Just wondering if everyones little angels are now crawling/walking? My dd not doing either yet is this unusual? She loves being on her feet and wants to walk about the house all the time (which is sore on my back!!!) but doesnt have the strength to do it herself yet. Not worried just a query really. She shows no interest in crawling and cries when put on her tummy. I was also told by a cousin who came to visit that it was bad I had a walker for her and it is very much frowned upon by hv etc. I've never been told this before and again not going to worry as dd has had lots enjoyment from it but was made to feel like bad parent for this I dont mind if I get things wrong along the way as I'm sure we all will just part of learning but would hate to think I have done something that is going to affect her development either.

Hi kama sorry cant offer much advice as dd not best at eating either and also has very limited foods so will be interested to see if anyone any useful tips. I suppose you could maybe try a veg lasagne since your dd enjoys it or adding extra vegs into hers. Hopefully its just a short phase and will start eating better soon....well thats what I'm hoping for anyway.

Chiropody4 · 15/11/2005 19:04

Well it is nice to know (Lynne C) that my ds is not the only one who is not intrested in crawling at the moment. All he wants to do is stand up to the settee, and walk around the house with me holding him. All of his friends are crawling, so it makes me feel as though i have not been encouraging him enough. He is such alaid back little boy that nothing frustrates him, i should be thankful.

Witchycat · 16/11/2005 13:24

Kama - Lily gets really annoyed with spoon feeding too - she only wants what she can pick up and feed herself with.

Have you tried brocolli as a finger food ? Lily loves that. Or could you make cheese straws or what about mashed potato & carrots rolled into little balls that she can pick up with her fingers (yes, it's as messy as it sounds but sometimes works with Lily.

Another thing that sometimes works is putting food on my plate and eating it myself - she seems to want my food even if she didn't want the same thing when it was on her own tray.

Is it feeding herself that's the issue or just not wanting most food types?

suss · 16/11/2005 21:19

DB doesn't mind being spoon fed, not really interested in the spoon, as long as he has finger food as well - you are right broccoli is a great hit as are french beans, brussel sprouts (take a while to chew with only two teeth) soft carrots, eggy bread, toast and even cabbage leaves! DB will eat most things and likes what we eat a lot. DB has only just started proper crawling, before he was draging himself around the wooden floors, those of you not crawling thank your lucky stars you don't have a child who smacks their head into things about 10 times a day. He is pulling up by himself now and today he did a wee bit of cruising (Not looking for gay sex but walking holding on to furniture.)

LynnC · 21/11/2005 16:16

Thanks Chiropody4 good to know dd not alone. Although judging by some other posts I have been bad mother and hindered her by using a walker Never mind too late to worry now and I'm sure like you say suss it will be a nightmare when all those bumps and lumps come when she starts bumping into everything. Must be so cute though watching them walk about.

suss · 23/11/2005 20:54

DB had a haircut today, it wasn't his first but it was his first hairstyle. He looks like a little boy they seem to be growing up so fast now, every day they learn something knew. DB now shakes his head when I say no and shkes hands, he doesn't wave hello though. anybody else have cute little traits?

suss · 27/11/2005 20:25

Bump

dizzymama · 29/11/2005 14:38

Awh Suss he sounds a cutie!
E hasn't had a haircut yet but does have many cute little ways. Her favourite at the moment is if you say 'No!' She'll look you straight in the eyes and shout 'chesss' which is her weird and wacky version of yes! She also waves at teh Tv and the cats, but rarely other humans! I'm finding she is increasingly wilfull, which shocked me a bit as I think (in my naive world) I thought wilfullness happened when they hit two!!

suss · 29/11/2005 20:00

E sounds cute too . Ds is now pulling up on every bit of furniture and crawling up the stairs saying up up up! We have cut out his morning nap because he was waking at 5am and not sleeping well at night or at lunchtime. So far sort of ok, we are still having blips, but he doesn't seem to need the nap now.
