Hi - anyone fancy making up a thread for babies born this month? My dd (child no 4 ) was born on 6th Jan - I have had a rough time so far with feeding (cracked nipples etc) but things have started to improve now (I think). if only I could get her to sleep at night....

Luvlymum, I work two days and now I'm back into it, would happily consider 3 days but probably no more (my bank balance would say otherwise!!) Finding childcare was a big issue for me but we searched and searched and finally found a childminder who I am really happy with. I found that once I had this sorted, I felt a lot happier about leaving E. She now greets the lady with smiles and wants a hug from her!! Have you got any idea of what sort of childcare you'll be looking at?

Pollyanna · 21/10/2005 20:33

my dd who was born on 6th jan doesn't crawl at all. She has shuffled, but only on wooden floors. She sort of bounces around normally. She is now showing an interest in pulling herself up, but I don't expect she will do it quickly. (she is a bit of a blob really!).

She has been saying Mama for a few months really, and now says dada - both at appropriate times. She sings songs, making the right noises at the right times. She claps her hands and waves bye and will bang things and splash water to "order"

She eats 3 meals a day and is bf the rest of the time, she also likes finger foods and is often reluctant to be fed.

We've had a very rough time the last couple of days though - in and out of hospital with febrile convulsions. Very scary

hi all, have nt posted for a long time but its nice to read how everyone is developing. Sorry to hear of your tough time pollyanna, hope everything is ok. Dd (born 31st Jan) has been crawling for a few weeks now and can now pull herself up on everything she can get hold of, (Must take her off tv 20 times a day). Instead of looking for childcare I decided to become a childminder myself instead of going back to work, this way I get best of both worlds.

Hi everyone! My Ds is now cruising the furniture. He doesn't crawl that much and he loves to stand and jump up and down (with me holding on to him). He has his four front teeth but still gags on some foods such as mashed potato. He has also started waking up in the night again!!! Which was a bit of a shock to the system as i thought i had put that all behind me.

How much milk is everyones Ds/DD having now? For anyone using formula, what is the difference between follow on milk and second milk?

Chiropody4 · 27/10/2005 08:35

Hi ya, my ds was born on the 16th Jan, and isnt crawling or rolling, he is quite happy sitting and watching everyone else. Is is showing a intrest in pulling himself up to furniure, but i am not trying to encourge this as i think he should crawl or roll first.

He was a big baby at birth 9lb 9oz, does the size of the baby effect when and how they move?

He has just started to babble and make lots of funny noises. He eats 3 good meals a day.

But he has just started to wake at night around 3.30am, and drinks around 7oz of milk, last night i gave him some weetabix before bed and he slept untill 5.30, has anybody else done this?

katylou25 · 27/10/2005 09:03

Hi everyone

Do you give him snacks in between meals? My DS has 3 meals and 2 snacks between (mainly finger foods - cheese, fruit, crackers etc) and that seems to fill him up more. he has 2 7 oz bottles a day one in morning and one in evening. Hes now pulling himself up and has worked out how to get from his stomach to sitting up which he is SO chuffed with - much squealing and waving of arms required every time he does it! His commando crawling is still going - keeps getting up on hands and knees and trying to go somewhere that way but hasnt got any speed so returns to his army man ways!

dizzymama · 31/10/2005 17:44

Hi ladies, hope evryone is doing well and babies are all healthy and happy!
Just wondering how much daytime sleep your little ones are having these days? E varies from day to day but seems to be fighting nap time more and more, I don't waqnt to force her to sleep but how much does she actually need?

sorry for the few spelling mistakes!

ess · 02/11/2005 22:21

Hi Angie, my DD is going through a not eating phase at moment, hasn't for about 4 weeks. I thought it may be top teeth coming through(she has bottom ones) and ta-da, it appeared today! She has only put on 5oz in 7 weeks so bit worrying but not much I can do. Don't want to ram it down her throat! She started crawling properly at weekend so that was really exciting. Have had to put cupboard catches etc on as she's already trying to break in. She's still having(when she does eat) mashed food but she'll eat toast fingers, cheese fruit and the like.

Witchycat · 04/11/2005 20:35

Hi everyone.

Kama - No, I'm definately not having anymore. I already have a 4 year old and so 2 is enough for me.

Lily is pretty good sleep-wise most nights but has had a really bad cold the last week or two so sleep has been disturbed again.

She has 2 bottom teeth and 2 or 3 ontop - they seemed to give her loads of trouble coming through.

Food-wise she has roughly broken down veg, pasta, cheese, type stuff & toast/bread. Nursery today gave her veggie burger & ice cream for tea which she apparently loved. We've not been that adventurous yet.

Come to think about it, we've avoided sweet stuff altogether - kind of a 'keep her off it for as long as possible' idea.

Perhaps I should relax about it now. How much sweet stuff are you allowing your babies?

suss · 04/11/2005 20:57

Trying to avoid sweet food although the odd plain biscuit has been had. I know instinctively the DS will love chocolate etc so think that he needs no encouragment, I haven't given him any puddings but he has had semolina (without sugar) and porridge with a bit of maple syrup. Ds is now crawling hands and knees Although he still like to slide on the wooden floors. He is pulling up all the time, even against the wall. Ds does go through phases of not eating so much. I don't offer alternatives as I figure he's just not hungry, during a growth spurt though his consumption is enormous. About babies, Ds is an IVF baby, our 10th attempt, 7 years of trying, so like a lunatic I am hopefully starting IVF next week for another. I just ) more fertile soon after having a baby and if its going to take another 10 attempts I need to start now.

dizzymama · 05/11/2005 21:03

Fingers crossed for the IVF suss
We've been talking about another but will probably wait till E is 2 or there-abouts.
Bless her, she does sound 'behind' on the movement front compared to the other babies! She has just developed an hysterical crawl type action which consists of her comando crawling with her arms but pushing along on her feet! She looks like she's trying to hoover crumbs off the carpet!
Sweet wise I've avoided giving her chocolate yet (agree, she'll need no encouragement from me there!)but she adores petis filous, which are probably packed with stuff she shouldn't have. Ho hum.
Booked to take her to see Santa at a local farm, I'm hideously excited about it! I know she'll love the animals and probably not even notice the man in the red suit but I'll have a great time!

Witchycat · 06/11/2005 18:23

Those of you who's little ones are crawling - do they crawl in a regular sort of movement? I'm asking because although Lily has been doing it for 3 months or so now and is very fast, I noticed the other day she craws kind of lop-sided. She bends her leg & puts her right foot flat on the floor and then sort of drags the left leg forward - so right foot, left knee, right foot, left knee.

Anyone else's babe doing that ?

Thanks Kama. Yes it's quite cute & I'v enot worried too much because she's standing up and seems to balance evenly and uses both legs ok when she's cruising round the furniture - just thought it was odd that she always crawls that way.

dizzymama · 06/11/2005 21:26

Witchycat, it sounds very similar to E's crawling style too!
If your babies are bottle fed, how mnay oz's are they on per day now? (sorry if I've asked that question before, I can't rmember!)

s13 · 06/11/2005 21:32

dd has 7oz bottles in the morning and before bed and two 5oz bottles mid morning and mid afternoon. they still need 20oz a day, hope that helps.

dizzymama · 06/11/2005 21:35

Thanks s13, I'd no idea she still needed that much, she's only really getting 14oz at the ,oment as I can't convince her to take her 2o'clock bottle anymore. I shal persevere!

suss · 07/11/2005 08:47

Don't worry too much about how much milk they are drinking as long as it is their main drink. DS has 5oz am, 4oz at about 2.30 3pm and then 6oz at bedtime. So he only has 15oz. He is starting to drop the 2.30 feed, that's why its only 4oz, they do by 1 year they will probably only have 2 milk feeds, am & pm.

katylou25 · 07/11/2005 09:27

DS only has 2 bootles now 7oz 1st thing in the morning and 7oz before bed - doesnt always finish them either so am making sure he has lots of cheese, yoghurt etc to make up the milk requirement to get the calcium etc - he just isnt fussed on the milk anymore and much prefers his food. I do give him sweet stuff - but only yoghurts and homemade puddings - am a qualified early years specialist and children should have high fat, reasonable amount of sugar in diet - have completely different needs to us in terms of food - IMO most important thing is the quality f ingredients etc - ds has homemade stuff wherever poss and anything i but is only natural ingredients - also he loves fruit as well which helps. Hes just started to pulll himself up and is so pleased with him self its really funny. I've noticed though that he al;ways learns a new skill when hes naked after a bath - bizarre?????? He first sat naked, crawled naked, sat up from tummy naked - and will only do it then for a few eweeks til properly mastered and then will try it in dyuatime fully dressed!!!
