Hi - anyone fancy making up a thread for babies born this month? My dd (child no 4 ) was born on 6th Jan - I have had a rough time so far with feeding (cracked nipples etc) but things have started to improve now (I think). if only I could get her to sleep at night....

Hi AC,I've been trying to get E to drink from a cup for ages, she just seems to chew her non spill cup and I've discovered she will only drink water from a cup with nolid! This is a very soggy business but at least I can get some liquids into her at last!
Weaning wise E is still on 5 bottles (I keep trying to drop one but she's having none of it) and has just progressed to 3 meals a day (although not always). I tend to give her food with bottles 1,3 and 4 but I worry she's having too much - with all the bottles and the food! We can't win can we? How's everyone else going with solids?

dizzymama · 28/07/2005 09:22

Forgot tomention that I'm following the Lorraine Kelly/Anita Bean book.

angelcake99 · 28/07/2005 11:10

Hi DM! I will try those books! I have seen the Lorraine Kelly one, and nearly bought it off ebay. I will have another look. I think i will try DS with a cup with no lid and see how he progresses! Its encouraging to hear that someone else is going through a similar thing.

ess · 01/08/2005 08:36

My dd is still on 5 bottles too-which feed should you drop first?every book seems to say something different.

dizzymama · 01/08/2005 09:48

Yes!! I've managed to drop the fifth bottle (which is the second bottle iyswim!) now she has 7:30; 11:30; 3:30 and 7:30 with breakfast, dinner and tea at around 9:00; 1:00 and 5:00. Does anyone know how much milk a 6 month old should be having (in ounces! I don't work in modern volume!!)

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 12:49

i think it is at least 18 - 20 fl oz they should be having

katylou25 · 01/08/2005 13:30

Agree with Janbo - at least a pint of milk thinkj thats 20 oz isn't it??? DS 6.5 months has 4 7 oz bottles at 7 am, 10.30, 2.30 and 7pm with food at 8.30, 12.30, snack at bout 4 and tea at 6. He dropped a bottle automatically when starting solids and went from gulping down9oz to just about drinking 7. but then hes never been very fussy on milk - and LOVES his food! By the way what sort of times do your babies sleep in the day?

Janbo25 · 01/08/2005 13:59

my ds is having 4 bottles 8.15, 12.15, 4.15 & 8.15.

8.15am: porridge & 5oz milk
12.15pm: lunch & 3/4oz milk
4.15pm: tea & 4/5oz milk
8.15pm: 8oz milk

this varies though

dizzymama · 01/08/2005 20:00

Thanks guys, she's having between 6 and 8 oz depending so is definitely getting enough!
E has a nap 2 hours after she has had her first bottle (Usually 45mins - 1 hour) then another longer nap somewhere between 12:30 and 1:30 that usually last about 1 hour - 1 and a half hours.

angie0201 · 01/08/2005 20:02

my HV told me to just give her a bottle in morn and one at nite but she was hysterical when she was having food she tried to take it to quick and would get so upset, but if she was having bottles she wouldn't eat solids so what i do now is make sure the milk feeds are spaced out between meals.
7- 50z bottle
730- breakfast e.g half weetabix toast fingers
and a little bit of banana
945- 4oz bottle
12- dinner
2- snack e.g. today she had 2 strawberrys and a
cube of cheese
230- 4oz bottle
5- Tea
630 8oz bottle
dd has just started using one of those avent magic cups with a spout, took about a day to get used to it but she likes juice so much she wouldn't go without!

angie0201 · 01/08/2005 20:05

oh and to answer the question about sleeping dd usually sleeps after her 9.45 bottle and her 230 bottle for about 40 mins and then goes to bed at 7

angie0201 · 02/08/2005 21:58

Was just wondering about raspberries can babies have them, i give her strawberries and blueberries but have never seen a recipe with raspberries in was wondering if they are ok

Janbo25 · 03/08/2005 09:22

i have give them to my ds so i hope so

ess · 07/08/2005 17:47

Hi guys. Am a bit confused about this weaning business! My dd is still on 5 bottles a day, has 6oz milk at about 7, bottle with food at 11, bottle with food at 3, bottle at 7 before bed and late feed about 10.30. Not sure wwhen to drop late feed- she doesnt drink all her bottle in morning so dont think shes ready for breakfast yet. Should I wait til shes having breakfast before dropping late feed or just drop it so shell be hungrier in morning?Thought I might try giving her brekkie about 9ish for a week and then trying to drop it. Any ideas please????

luvlymum · 08/08/2005 10:02

I've started weaning my dd 2 weeks ago and sh's still having 4 bottles a day she has 7oz at 7 am then some food, 6oz at 11 with food, 6oz at 3pm with food and between 7 & 8oz at 7pm before bed then she sleeps right through til 7 am. I think she's still having too much milk but I guess she'll only take what she needs, I always give her food for lunch and tea before the bottles, don't know if this will help you my dd is my first baby and I'm finding this weaning v. confusing too, you never know if you're doing the right thing!!

ess · 08/08/2005 16:28

I know- guess as long as theyre happy and not hungry its ok- youre lucky that ds sleeps through. Dds still having late feed and wakes at 3 every morning- she only settles if we bring her in bed. Bit of a mare but nothing else seems to work. She has reflux and sleeps really bad. Had a look at Gina Fords book today, what a joke-"settle the half drowsy baby in its cot and let them sleep for 2 hours"-chance would be a fine thing!

Magscat · 08/08/2005 20:12

Hi ess - Is she hungry when she wakes at 3am or is it just habit? I don't think I'd be looking to drop the 10.30 feed until she's sleeping through from then. You could try waking her up a bit earlier & seeing if she gets hungrier that way - e.g. just try feeding at 10 or 10.15 & see what happens.

I'd be happy if my dd was just feeding 10.30pm & then 7am at the moment. Last night she fed 10pm, midnight, 5am - and that was a good night!

Magscat · 08/08/2005 20:14

Luvlymum - it does sound like a lot of milk but if she's sleeping well, getting solids first and generally happy & healthy I wouldn't worry about it. I envy your sleep !!

ess · 08/08/2005 23:22

Hi Magscat, think its just habit- she oesnt fininsh her bottle in the morning so shes not hungry and doesnt cry when she wakes- sounds like I have it easy compared to you. Its very easy to think that you are the only person in the world having problems isnt it?

Magscat · 09/08/2005 18:08

Hi ess - if she's not crying at 3am, what happens if you ignore her ? Will she settle herself or would she settle at least without a feed. I think I would try ignoring her unless she's getting upset. Easier said than done though and I'm hardly ina position to give advice seeing as how I'm still getting up at least twice a night! (There's plenty of mum's having it harder than me though)

ess · 09/08/2005 23:25

Dont want to jinx anything but she slept through til 7am for the first time ever!!!Not holding my breath though, couldve been a fluke but you never know- dont know if she woke up but didnt hear her if she did- maybe I should wear earplugs. When she wakes though shes not grizzly just very vocal and gets much louder if you dont go to her.

Magscat · 10/08/2005 19:47

Hey, congrats ess. Fingers crossed for you that this is the start of a good sleep pattern

ess · 11/08/2005 21:40

Magscat, I think I jinxed it. She was awake at 2AM! Oh well- not much I can do I dont think. Hope you get some sleep tonight.

Kama I can't believe your little one is standing! My dd has only just started to be able to sit on her own and even then she needs cushions around her as she falls back. Well done Serena!!
