Newborn poo - when does it become more solid and less frequent?

My baby is 9 weeks, 6 weeks corrected.

No reduction in frequency of poos yet. Every fart is a poo, so if we want him to stay clean we could be changing nappy every hour.

Every poo is very wet. Keeping on top of nappy rash is hard.

Is this normal for this age? When should we expect frequency to reduce?

They won’t become solid until fully weaned unfortunately! Frequent poos are also common at a young age, they do get less frequent but won’t necessarily change in consistency til milk isn’t the main source of nutrition.

As above.

Use a barrier cream, this will help protect his bum.

When you start solids, around 6 months. Farty and wet poos are normal. I used weleda nappy cream and made sure I changed regularly sometimes every hour. They go less regularly the older they get - 9 weeks still early

Yes it will get less frequent as his stomach gets bigger. It's very small at this stage.

I EBF one until nine months (obviously solids way before nine months) and the other for about six weeks. Until any solids were introduced the EBF one was many many poos per day. The bottle fed one became much less at the point he went on bottles.

Thanks all this is reassuring. Still difficult as my LO seems in discomfort (groaning and crying) each time he goes. Which is a lot!

I’m of course already using barrier cream but may try different types.

Off to buy more nappies!

I wish mine would poo more often than not poops twice a week and cries in pain 24/7. Been like this since 3w old. GP just keeps giving laxative that give him a belly ache🙄🙄

there is poo coming out every hour and he is in pain? did you have antibiotics in labor? That sounds like something is up imo. Keep an eye out for dry skin (eczema).
