Is this silent reflux?

Hi,

DD is 2 weeks old and is formula fed (on Kendamil). She sleeps well during the day but at night she grunts/makes loud throat noises alot and is quite gassy too. Initially I put it down to gas but she's been getting progressively worse. She also hiccups alot (around 4 times a day, but each time there are around 50-60 hiccups). Midwife thinks she doesn't have a tongue tie as her tongue can go up but health visitor had referred her and we are waiting for an appointment.

She takes small feeds (like 30-40ml) at a time rather than a full feed. She had developed a few acne like spots only on her face and doesn't have diarrhoea etc. I notice at night what settled her straight away was sleeping on my pillow next to me. She also seemed in pain when I put her flat to nappy change her straight after feed. She is waking up every 2-3 hours at night for a feed.

I had a very traumatic time last time round with my DC who had severe silent reflux and cows milk allergy. So this time round I really don't want to go through it again.

Does this sound like the start of silent reflux? Is it worth trying anti reflux formula? Or adding carobel to current formula?

Who is the best person to go to in relation to this? Is it the GP, midwife or health visitor?

I have no idea, but it sounds exactly like my son who is 2.5 weeks old. Gassy, hiccup-y, unsettled at night but sleeps during the day. He is breast fed so I have no idea what volume feeds he takes. I'm hoping it passes! He's my second. I can't exactly remember what my first was like at this age but unsettled too I think! Good luck and congratulations!

@neverwakeasleepingbaby thanks and congratulations to you too.

I've raised the incline on the crib so I'm hoping that will help. I've also looked at wedge pillow for crib, but struggling to find one that will fit our large crib...

Did the wedge pillow work? This sounds like my 4 week old at night. During day he is fine but at night he will not settle on back and get every fussy. Only sleep upright on chest

Also interested to see what worked as sounds like my 9 day old.
Grunts a lot at night and gassy

The GP recommended us to keep LO upright for 20 min after feed and not over feed her in one go. That helped.

By 3-4 weeks the grunting really decreased at night and at 6 weeks it is totally gone. I wonder if it was just a developmental thing and just needed time? We did try coliccalm, it seemed to help initially but she then struggled to poo with it.

My LO was small though (5lb 5oz) so I don't know whether that was a factor too?

I would recommend giving it time before giving any medication.

@Rosebay2023 by the time wedge pillow came she was more settled and she didn't seem keen on it. So I left it. But I do use it if I need to nappy change her straight after feed as I feel it helps with preventing the hiccups.
