Welcome March Mums (and late Feb/early April Mums!) from the March 2008 threads.

Prisci - i had an old towelling dressing gown which I cut up into squares. I put one piece under his bum and one piece on top of his willy and then let him have his kick around. Apart from the most projectile of poos, this generally catches most of it The squares are also good for general mopping and wiping after big explosions as well.

Any tips for games to play with my DS? He's 4 weeks and just getting really interested in the world. I pull faces at him and he watches for ages and sometimes even copies me and he has just started to smile which is fabulous, but I want to do some more things with him. Any thoughts?

merryberry · 29/04/2008 13:21

hq, show him he's got 2 ears! rattle near one ear, then move it and rattle near the other. also, pieces of paper, draw different thick black lines, sit back and watch the wonder. gg also thinks me touching his hands together or feet together, or SHOCk ECXITEMENT touching a foot with a hand is the bees knees.

fitnfortyone · 29/04/2008 14:31

thanks for the answers everyone!
LO passed his 6wk check today with all bits intact . Weight now 11.5 (or 5.14 in new money), so still not reached GG's birth weight MB!
Length only 54cm...they did say the hospitals were notorious for getting the birth length wrong so don't rely on them, otherwise it could be a bit worrying that he's shrunk by 7cm! Head is a huge 40.7 to cope with that massive brain in there .
Asked re amount of formula LO's taking and apparently it's normal so he doesn't need hungry baby stuff...they reckon it at 2.5oz per lb of baby weight, so the guidelines on the formula packets are a little understated! Re water, the HV just suggested offering some cool boiled water about an hour after a feed if he's in sucky mode. Rather worried that when i mentioned cranial osteopath to GP, she'd never heard of it...not worried about the osteopathy bit, more that the GP is so in the dark!

Playing stuff, LO enjoys his dad playing peek-a-boo, and had a great time this morning as i was singing badly to him while moving his arms and legs around and kissing his toes. Have hit the jackpot though with his new toy, got a gift of the Fisher Price activity gym which arrived in the post htis morning - he was completely fascinated by it and gurgled away dancing on the floor and bopping bits of it.

2wasgood3isbetter · 29/04/2008 14:32

Had our 6 week check this morning. All going well, he's just under 11 lb (up from 8 lb 3 oz at birth) and is 61 cm long. I think he may be tall and skinny like his mum dad ! Also had a fantastic nights sleep, 6 whole wonderful bloody hours!!!!!!

I hope those of you struggling are doing well - this darn rain doesn't help does it. I remember feeling low after dd1 arrived but wasn't prepared to admit it. Going to see people or join groups was the last thing I wanted to do, but looking back, I think meeting people, and seeing that not every other mum in the world is perfect would have helped me be more realistic.

I feel really lucky because I feel great at the moment. I think it might be that having little man has helped my confidence return. I had a miscarriage about a year ago, which was such a shock (which I know they all are but after 2 healthy pregnancies I really hadn't expected it), and I lost all self-confidence and was probably a little depressed, which continued for much of this pregnancy. That fog seems to have lifted though, thank goodness. I'm sure it will for the rest of you with time - got my fingers crossed for you.

We are definitely getting proper smiles now, and dd2 (4.5) is convinced that when I'm not in the room that he is talking to her .

fitnfortyone · 29/04/2008 14:34

ps, GP did bugger all with me for my 6wk check, didn't bother looking at the scar, just asked how i was and took my blood pressure. Which was high on the right arm, but came down when she tried it on the other arm. Mentioned backache and got told to exercise, then told to take it easy and get people to help out (yeah right, not after 6wks of doing it all!). Got to wait until beginning of June before i go back to the gym though and can swim again, froze my membership for 2 months

merryberry · 29/04/2008 15:47

kudos to your incredible shrinking baby fn41 !

gg is having the sleep part of his 6 week growth spurt yesterday and today. it drives me mad when they do this, because in retrospect you can see all the hours of sleep they had, but didn't capitalise on in case they woke up. i could have done so damn much the last 1hr40. still feel nervous to start anything.

the other thing that makes me laugh is when they do spurt, you can almost hear them growing it's so obvious when you look at them. i heard a radio program last week where they talked about growing forced rhubarb - when it starts to grow you can actually hear it creak. I have this image of me at night, listening to GG grow in his sleep.

better go do something, that'll guarantee they'll both wake up. at the same time. grumpy.

merryberry · 29/04/2008 15:50

2good3better, i couldn't do this without my toddler groups and local mums, just couldn't do it. i'm really glad for you that you are feeling so lucky at the moment. i'm a bit the same way with gg: his birth and the weeks with him to date feel very healing after the strife of my first labour and trying to nurse ds1 with no functioning thyroid gland.

MissingMyHeels · 29/04/2008 19:47

I have an icky infection in my uterus - not been feeling that great for the last day or so but happier now I can fix problem!

fn41 - why no gym until June? My GP said as soon as I am better from infection I can go (was due to start intensive personal training tomorrow but postponed it now!!)

Also had six weke check today, whilst being seen by the doc about infection and we're both all good DD is so grizzly of an evening and as Daddy is out watching the football tonight and tomorrow he is not in my good books, especially as I am poorly! Had a lovely full body massage after my docs appointment which was lovely, am back for another on Friday morning, bliss

merryberry · 29/04/2008 19:50

antibiotics is it then MMH? sorry to hear you've got that to put up with. very very jealous of your massage though. why can't i overcome my inertia and book myself one? dunno!

turtle23 · 29/04/2008 20:35

Anyone got any ideas...Sunday evening I was so full of milk I was pouring through pads on right side while feeding from left whilst at in-laws () but for last day or two have squishy boobs that dont seem to (from pumping) be producing more than an ounce or two. What has happened? LO is ravenous and have had to resorted to formula to stop the screaming..WHY???????????

turtle23 · 29/04/2008 20:36

resort, not resorted

2wasgood3isbetter · 29/04/2008 21:17

Could be a growth spurt turtle. I go for a few days with squidgy boobs, then go a little longer between feeds overnight and feel like I'm going to explode. I think it is just natures way of increasing paranoia in mums. Expressing isn't a great indicator of milk quantity.

I've just booked in to get legs waxed - maybe I should have opted for massage instead .

merryberry · 29/04/2008 22:12

would guess growth spurt too. i think if it were me and it lasts more than three days or any other stuff crops up i'd ask a (good) HV. i hate the feeding bit of spurts, my boobs feel like rung out, numb-nippled dishclothes by 6pm

make sure you rest, sleep is the best milk booster i know, truly nothing like it, call in favours grab every hour, force yourself to sleep any chance you have. maybe try notpreggersagain fenugreek capsule suggestion? i've got seeds i make into tea for feeding frenzies, its got that mild curry taste but i quite like it and i do think it helps, and very quickly too.

HolidaysQueen · 29/04/2008 22:34

fennel tea is meant to work as well - i am battling low milk supply and this has been recommended to me (3 cups per day) by HV (good, also trained bfeeding counsellor) and by someone else.

imjin100 · 30/04/2008 09:35

hi all, been a while since i posted although I am trying to keep up reading although you guys seem intent on making keeping up a full time job with all the chat! Glad everyone ok...more or less but sorry to hear about milk probs and infections. Here's hoping things resolve soon.
all good our end, 6 week check discovered they think part of the placenta remaining which isn't so nice but good to understand why i'm still bleeding constantly! I thought it was normal but then what is normal?!?!
Baby is doing very well, growing and smiling and all these one would hope. I am blissfully happy although ahve to admit am disappointed by the weather. everyone said we were having babies at just the right time - umm - i'm not so sure! Getting wet was not my plan!¬

love to you all and hope everyone continues well and extra hugs to those finding it all a struggle and sorry to hear of some post natal depression looming. Really hope support is close at hand.

merryberry · 30/04/2008 11:35

hello imjin! sorry ot hear about placenta - what treatment for that? Weather is not helpful at the mo is it? WHen i get my kitchen and halway done (lord knows when) i am putting down a cork floor and sod fashion: i know from experience it'll hide buggy marks and foot prints and weaning splatter and general older boy mess. warm in winter, cool in summer. currntly it is white tile. ARGH! dirty white tile.

have a cottage pie about 80% from completion downstairs, better get a shift before school pick up. i'll never do it...

fitnfortyone · 30/04/2008 14:49

MMH, can't go to the gym until 1 May as I froze our membership and had to freeze for min 2 months (and i missed the ddebit cutoff for march!). can't wait to get back swimming again, though will get a bit of a dip in the water when we start swimming lessons in June

imjin sounds horrible, i thought 5wks of bleeding was bad enough! What will they do about it or do you just have to ride it out?

Went to cranial osteopath this morning, LO loved it, he was gurgling and smiling most of the way through the session, only grizzled once for less than 30secs. Apparently he had a lot of tension all over - base of spine/sacrum, large intestine, base of neck, jaws, ears and forehead, so she said not to expect miracles with one session! Apparently the babies either react by sleeping for ages afterwards or crying excessively for 24 hours so I hope we have the sleepy version...he cried a little when we got home but has been happily asleep for the last couple of hours. Fingers crossed it helps him enjoy his milk a bit more and his dad gets to watch the football in peace tonight

fitnfortyone · 30/04/2008 15:24

doh, just realised i should have said 1 June, not May. Cos it's May rather sooner than I expected. Already. What have I been doing with all my time lately?

merryberry · 30/04/2008 16:25

fn41 our osteo said same thing about either sleeping or crying, i burst out laughing at her and said but that's what babies do anyway, she tutted at me and said, no this is different and she was right! in 3 sessions we had 2 sleep reactions and 1 noisy. am willin gyou the sleepy version, +++++

spugs · 30/04/2008 17:24

wow so much to catch up on!!!
glad to hear everyone elses babies are as spotty and crusty as mine : ) i cant remember who was asking what but here goes.
weight wise - ive lost 2 1/2 stone, but not very sensibly i dont normally diet but after having babies i go for the crash variety. one proper meal a day and fruit/veg the rest of the time. i must admit though i had a tummy bug this week so that shed an extra cople of lbs! i put on 4 stone though so still a bit to go.

giving water when ff - i only give water if its really hot or babies constipated.that warning about on advice of doctor is on all formula.

periods - i think mine is putting in an appearence (6 weeks friday) bit of spotting this am after a few days of nothing.

had a fab day today went shopping bymysel this morning and bought some tops, st tropazed myself and painted my nails hot pink

e14mum · 30/04/2008 17:33

LookingForwardToSummer- you've opened a can of worms with your bf/ff thread! I was going to post on it this morning, but it's a bit out of hand now. Just to say that I agreed with you really.
Hope everyone's had a good day. LO is just waking up from a nap, so better go. We took a trip to DH's work where all the single 30-something-Londoners cooed over her!

LookingForwardToSummer · 30/04/2008 18:15

imjin - hope you are feeling better.

dd hd her jabs today. i was so nervous that dh came with me. it was awful seeing her cry , but she was smiling again in a couple of minutes. now i'm obsessively feeling her neck for signs of a temperature.

e14 - thank you! [emerging from hiding~] . i might not start anymore threads! only wanted to hear experieces from mothers who switched to ff, wasn't expecting to make hardcore bfers angry!

merryberry · 01/05/2008 08:45

ds1 has a streaming cold, so no school tomorrow, no playing out in the rain, hoping to god baby and i don't getit. hoping BH w/e is not a trial! my sunny little boy is a storm of grump and tantrums with a cold, and poor love how he hates to wipe his nose.

going for gold today - he can have percy pig sweets for pudding.

turtle23 · 01/05/2008 10:36

Oh dear...just had Glam on the phone and it seems poor little Charlie has the same mystery virus Pascal had last week. They are in hospital for a few days having all those hideous tests and being generally frightened. Glam, we hope you all get better and back home soon! Sending big hugs and loads of cake. xxxx

spugs · 01/05/2008 10:41

is it a stomach bug? weve all had it here apart from Ismay so ive got my fingers crossed she doesnt get it! hope charlie feels better soon x
