When to pump?

I've started pumping so DH can help out and take some of the pressure off.
DD is 12 days old and has always struggled with the left side, it's become so painful that I'm exclusively feeding her on the right side and then pumping on the left (only started yesterday). Does this sound like an okay plan pump wise? Sorry completely new to this!

Also, should I pump both sides when she does take a bottle?

Is actual bf not an option?

Might be a bit early to pump. I think it's suggested you wait for a rhythm to settle in at about six weeks.
I would personally call the breastfeeding support helpline and discuss with them 0300 100 0212

I’ve been expressing occasionally using a haakka style pump since 5 days because I have a big and very hungry baby. This was actually suggested by a midwife but with my previous DC I was told to wait to pump. Honestly opinions vary. I would suggest alternating sides though, baby is much more efficient at feeding that a pump is at pumping. Otherwise one boob will produce more and you may end up engorged or lopsided.

Yeah, it'll be fine, OP. Keep going.

Eventually LO will start alternating between sides, it's still early days 🙂 I did the same as you and one day my DS started only wanting the other side.

Another vote for calling one of the BFing Helplines today.

Can you get along to a BFing Support Group this week as well?

If you have a look under Feed The World on MN, there's a whole section on Infant Feeding which you might find helpful as well.

And congratulations on your new LO Flowers

With dc 1 I pumped at the same time as dc was feeding. But swapped sides each time, never got lots.
With dt I obviously couldn't pump at same time as tandem feeding so I pumped twice a day at set times I got lots more doing this.
It's trial and error each woman is different, you'll probably find it gets easier once baby is 6 weeks and gets easier after that if your consistent.

You need to see a lactation consultant to sort out your painful side.

Thanks for all the advice - I actually went to a breast feeding clinic earlier this week and while they were very helpful it's so hard to replicate at home. Will be going back next week but just going to try persevere in the meantime! 🤞
