Thought I'd start this thread now as I think there's already a couple of people to go on it, and I know there'll be an awful lot more!!

Will update when I get a chance

Hi, went to clinic today and Alek now weighs 12 lb 2. Not bad going though apparently they expect big babies to "catch down" with their peers over coming weeks (as opposed to catch up).

I wondered, again for anyone with windy LOs, did you have this problem - when DS sleeps on me he never trumps but when I put him down on his back he does loads of really violent ones - this is why it's difficult to put him down for daytime naps because he stirs from doing this. I've read on here about people putting windy babies to nap on their tummy but I can't bring myself to do this...

Also, at night he really grunts a lot, sometimes this coincides with letting out the farts or sometimes not, he doesn't wake himself so much at night though he keeps ME awake well enough .

Naetha · 05/03/2008 19:28

Yes btw I still have half a bottle of colief if anyone is interested

Fluffy - interesting what yo say about abundant milk supply and poor latch - I think you may be on to something there. The milk hits Ben at the back of the throat whether he's sucking or not, so no real reason to bother with a good latch I suppose!

katyt1 · 05/03/2008 19:31

um fluffy - it wasn't me re infacol
still about all the stitches probs. glad your dh i being lovely. we still haven't done the deed yet, as i've only just finished bleeding. now henry is out of our room, there'll be no stopping us - err except for bed = sleep right now

mamachris - sorry missed your q last time, i'm in essex and the health authority here (or so i've been told anyway) won't snip as they believe it needs a general and they won't do non-urgent generals before 18mo. then i guess they figure they may as well wait until speech is developed to see if there's a problem and whether it needs doing at all. not that i can agree with any of that tho .
it's true that some ties do stretch and that ds's appears to be quite stretchy anyway so maybe it won't be necessary, just winds me up the different treatment in diff areas.

confession - i have put henry down on his tummy in the pram during the day - he seems to love it, not related to farts tho
good weight alek

frag - well done you and well done your dh

well i have done (half-)amazingly tonight on my own. bathed both ds's, fed henry whilst tom tried to drown himself and give me a heart attack (new game, lie down on your back in too deep water, thrash around, inhaling water as you stare at your mum freaking her out, then laugh hysterically when she tries to rescue you ). got them both dressed, story time, henry falls asleep, so far so brilliant...then tom refuses to stay in his bed, screams, and is now stomping around up there, argh!
he's even had some calpol night as he's teething and full of cold, and was up at 5.30, but NOT tired!!!
well he's quiet at least for now so ignoring any shenanigans

naetha - bad luck re jabs, but well done on tongue tie. sounds like a fab group. i used to do a walk with tom, must find out if it's still going.

right, glass of white i think while i raid the freezer, fish fingers if i can find any i think! cordon bleu here

Naetha · 05/03/2008 20:04

Katy - print this out and take it to your GP. www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/pdf/ip/IPG149guidance.pdf

It's in the NHS guidelines to recommend snipping. Ben's was done with local anaesthetic and he smiled throughout the whole thing - not a clue what was going on - not before, not during and not after.

OP posts:
katyt1 · 05/03/2008 20:57

thanks naetha, grr that i have this before.
glad ben is sorted, think it is prob too late for tom (it does say that GA is recommended for later on snipping). hopefully his speech will be fine and it won't matter anyway.

ooh, think dh is home, hooray

ayrshirelolo · 05/03/2008 21:05

hi guys! thanks for all the advice re infacol etc, Alex's wee face was a picture when i gave her the first dose last night before her feed, a complete "what the f**k??" face that reminded me somewhat of dh....!!
i know it will take a few days to kick in, but already things seem a bit better! h/v here today, Alex is now 9lb (wee grubber!!) and she thinks the infacol is a good idea, just warned me to watch she isn't getting constipated which can apparantly happen with it. Nice to know the wee horror is putting on weight though, shows i must be doing something right!
Fluffy, ta for the text, made me laugh!! think we'll have to make up some more lyrics to the burpy song? I'll give it some though tonight, sorry T's fab night behaviour didn't last! Alex managed 5 hours last night, and i though that was good going!
Katy congrats on the solo evening, and lol on the fish finger thing, hope you had them with crap white bread and loads of ketchup? i'm all smug coz i made soup today for the first time in weeks, and then couldn't be bothered to eat it, so it's in the fridge till tomorrow and we ended up eating scampi and chips out the freezer tonight! Do i get a "bad wife" award?!
Anyway girls, drama today is that washing machine seems to be on it's last legs..... AAAAAAAArrrgggggg!!! i know you will understand what a daunting prospect that is! dh doesn't know what's wrong.... why not? Is that not a boy's job? so perhaps a trip to Comet with the credit card is in order.... i knew we shouldn't have bought this laptop!!!!! anyway, wishing us all a good night... and altogether now, "give me a B... a U... an R.... a P..... a little burp for your mumeeeeee......"

gingeme · 05/03/2008 22:07

Evening ladies. Ive had a real s**t afternoon literaly. Started at 11am when ds4 usualy has his 2 hour nap but just screamed and cried despite my effort to calm him for half hour. Gave in and got him up and went to our local retail park where we went to Paul Simon to buy curtains for our front room. Anyway while the sales assistant is making coochey coo faces at ds5 hes busy filling his nappy, and vest, and trousers, and top and nearly car seat. Swiftly took him across to Mac D's to change him and have lunch. Ds4 still pretty grumpy but eventually fell asleep.
Got home where ds3 didn't quite make it up all our stairs ,we up 4 flights to our flat, before poohing his pants which is not at all like him. Got him sorted and all was fine. 5pm ds4 did a very smelly nappy. Changed him. He then did another one about 10 mins later. Changed him again. Another one about 10 mins later, each one getting a little runnier by 6.15 it was literally running out of his nappy so I stood him in the bath, stripped him off and showered him down.He wasn't ill or hot which was good and fortunately didn't pooh any more after that. So settled him and ds3 into bed. Got ds5 ready for bed. Just put his babygro on and he did another mammouth pooh which resulted in another complete change of clothes. Phew!
Kids eh? Whod have em?

Naetha · 05/03/2008 22:32

{{{hugs}}} Gingeme!!! I think everyone has days like that - feels like you're on a non-stop conveyor belt of poo with the odd bit of vomit! You just have it five times though I suppose!

When I drove DH to work on monday Ben did a huge poo just before we left. He then had an hour in the car to stew in it. By the time we got back it had gone all up his back, and in the process of trying to get his vest off it went everywhere. It took 2 baths to get it all off, including out of his hair and ears!!

OP posts:
katyt1 · 06/03/2008 08:55

oh gingeme, poor you, think you deserve a few poo free nappies!
we had poo here too, ds2 slept beautifully from 7-1, quick feed, back to sleep, then 3.30, back to sleep, then 7 again. but BAD mummy didn't change his nappy all that time, then when she checked, it had gone everywhere, vest, sleepsuit, sleeping bag, down the legs, etc... bath needed. had the double problem of too long in nappy (my fault) and back of nappy folded over (also my fault), perhaps i wasn't so great last night after all!!

anyway, off out to playgroup in a mo, still trying to get a P&T off ebay, will just have to up my budget again i think!

nicky6 · 06/03/2008 10:19

just got five mins while chalrie asleep. last night bad wind again . midwife say she has evening colic and we found out she has thrush a mate of mine noticed noone at the doctors surgery had - shes had it about 4 weeks bless her.

Anyway tuesday night amazing baby slept from 12 til 5 and 5 til 9 hoorah but then just when you think you have cracked it last night she was up half the night with tummy pains and for the first time in weeks i actually took her in bed with us and cuddled her back off to sleep.

On the tongue tie issue there is a consultant Dr Patel who runs the tongue tie clinic ther - charlie was done 3 weeks ago no anaesthetic and no problem - he is a very strong beleiver in doing it early to promote breast feeding.

he takes people from all over the place so it might be worth speaking to the breats feeding counsellor at kings college hospital - south london as that is where Dr Patel is based - worth a go.

Me on infacol and it seems to help a bit but they say they all grow out of it by 3 months anyway - seems terrible to be wishing their little lives away.

anyway must go little shrieks from upstairs are starting!!

gingeme · 06/03/2008 11:01

nicky1 do you mean thrush of the mouth or the other end? ds4 had thrush in his mouth and I felt so guilty thinking it was because I hadn't sterelised his dummy one time. The gp reasured me it could happen at any time just because its in his body. But like any thrush. Hope it clears up soon.
Well thank goodness all ds's are fine and healthy today. Had a fairly good night with George apart from the coughing and spluttering from trying to give him Gripe Water at 3am.
OOh post has just come. 2 parcels from Ebay. Got to go.
Have a good day all xxx

susiemj · 06/03/2008 12:54

Only had time for a quick glance but re contraception. There's a newish 'mini-pill' that's safe to use with bf and has a 12 hour - not 2 as old mini pills - window to take it in.It's called cerazette.

susiemj · 06/03/2008 14:03

Ok - had a bit of a better read.

lolo - thanks for tips on colic - seems now she just had bad wind from something I ate. Perhaps curry or coffee?

Gingeme - poor [poo]r you! Yesterday Sabela decided to poo in the middle of feeding, then proceeded to do one every ten mins throughout feed. Lots of nappies got through!

Naetha / fluffy - I think Sabela gets disturbed by too much milk too. She chokes at the beginning of the feed and then loses interest in sucking - I trhink because the first bit of milk is so easyto get. Can't copmplain tho - she's feeding well now.

We're doing really well here. Last week was a bit hairy becasue of the 'colic' - although we now think it was something I ate that upset her. She's putting on a good amount of weight each week and I've relaxed about the whole feeding issue. She's starting to go longer at night too whichiis great because I felt we'd got her on to a really artificial schedule with those two hourly feeds.

Does anyone else have a really playful baby? aybe i just know nothing about babies, but I wasn't expecting to have to play for HOURS each day with a two-month old. She plays every opportunity - even while feeding. She smiles at my breast and kind of shakes her head and re-latches then smile again. Sometimes it really distracts her from her feed! She also has a game where we make lion noises at her and open our mouths and she anwers us back. That's how I know she wants to play - I look down at her and she's 'doing the lion' and if we don't play she cries. It's exhausting and lovely and it's why I'm not on here so much. Anyone else the same?

Thought it was worth pointing out the cerazette as other mini pils have such a small time period in which you can take each pill.

If any of you c section ladies has had problems with doing the do can you have a look here. I've a somewhat mysterious problem and was wondering if any of you had the same.

Glad you all sound like you're doing so well.
Hope McDoodle's Lo is better?

bluebell82 · 06/03/2008 17:40

sorry to hijack but I think my periods have returned at 6 weeks even though I am bf exclusively! Had 6 week check today and my blood pressure was 142/94 I think, I forget now, but it was very high anyway and they have frightened me into thinking I could have retained placenta.. she told me to come back if the bleeding got very clotty or suddenly stops.. so I am sitting here worried now.. I hate my gp... any body elses af's returned so soon?

fluffyneedssomesleep · 06/03/2008 18:17

Gingeme... that sounds awful, but funny to read at the same time (so hope it was ok to laugh? ) Glad it was a one-off, sounds as tho it was truly nasty while it lasted - bet you're glad that ds1 and ds2 are too old for you to be wiping their bums as well!!!

Katy/Lolo ...infacol mix-up!! Sorry...you're both lovely and I've got nappy brain

Susie - I took cerazette after ds1 and it seemed ok, so am going to start on it again - just got my prescription from the doctor today (but no intention of actually making 'use' of it until my stitches get better/fixed )

Took Tamara to the doctor today - she's got a red patch on the back of her next going up into her hairline and it isn't clear if its a birthmark or some sort of skin infection....I've been ignoring it for about 3 weeks since we noticed it but the hv and my sister (who's a doctor) both suggested we got it checked. GP isnt too sure either, so we're going to give some cream a go and see what happens. Anyone else had anything like this?

Last night wasn't too bad - she slept from her 11pm bottle until 4.30am, then I fed her and she slept again, with just one 'settle' needed, until we woke her at 7.45, but I still feel like I've been conked over the head with a baseball bat ...! But she's being really good in the early evening (7-11pm) and not waking at all...for which I am so so so grateful as ds1 was terrible at that time and I used to have burnt dinners on a regular basis...!

Hugs to all, wishing you all relaxed, sleep filled evenings, xxx

AngeChica · 06/03/2008 19:23

Fluffy DS gets red mark from my arm on his neck when feeding. I've been putting a muslin between my arm and his head to see if helps.

Sorry can't help you Susie ... there has been no action in this house since way before DS was born . I thought I had stopped bleeding 5 weeks post CS but it came back a bit today after longish walk with pram. Makes me think, I have been very blase about doing pelvic floor exercises, thinking I had got away with it!!!

Forced myself to go to BF group today despite feeling and looking like death warmed up after a gripey night and morning.

Going to try cranial osteopath I think, even though DS wouldn't have had any trauma to the head with my non-labour CS, i have heard it still helps colic. Also a woman at BF recommended Dentinox drops, anyone tried these? She said her baby was just like Alek but the drops really helped!!

madmouse · 07/03/2008 12:11

Hi all

Finding this parenting lark a bit of a rollercoaster atm. Nathan is having nasty bouts of colic and with his anti-convulsant meds already I don't really want to give him anything else. I am also not sure a cranial osteopath would be safe. Last night DH was on placement and Nathan screamed the house down, in the end I was crying too thinking surely after all we have been through already this is unfair.

And then this morning they rang from hospital that they cannot get a clear result on his test for Cystic Fibrosis and can a midwife come round to take another sample. Having listened to the problem (basically the more complex and reliable test is clear but the basic test, the one prone to errors is inconclusive) DH is supremely unconcerned. But I have been through so much that I am way up the tree and hard to get out. Am sort of reassured now but a bit tense and I am clearly decidedly fragile.

Poor Nathan, mw pricked three holes in him with a tool meant for newborns, not chunky 5 week olds (she was not told his age) and it was hard wringing blood out and he screamed and screamed, although when given back to me he just glared at her and fell asleep . She will ring if the sample is insufficient so we can have it done in a more grown-up way. The lab has promised a call midweek to confirm everything is ok (hopefully).

Admiring all of you in need of anticonception. We bought some rubbers, but have a hard enough time getting enough cuddles in. Although this morning Nathan cried and DH settled him, then put him in bed between us, asleep, and that was a lovely aagh clever us moment

Ginge, that poo episode sounded horrendous. Nathan only does one or two a day, so I do not envy you!

Amani · 07/03/2008 16:01

bluebell - am mixed feeding and started period at 10 weeks

madmouse - I hope the test results come out ok.

susie - dd2 is quite a contact baby and is happy to sit in the bouncer and watch the world go by or with the play gym. doesn't really cry other than for feed/wind/sleep.

Took DD2 to HV today to get weighed - 11 pounds 14 ounces at queried the vomitting after each feed (recommended to put her in a bouncer for 1/2hr after each feed to help the milk go down) and also green poo (told it's to do with wind and advised to give 2 ounces of cool boiled water a day).

Does anyone LO enjoy being put on thier tummy? HV recommended 5 mins of tummy play each day, then building up the time as she gets older - but she hates it and cries the house down when I try.

susiemj · 07/03/2008 16:34

Amani - isn't the tummy play thing so that they can strengthen their neck muscles? If it is, my LO does 'neck lifts' when she's on my shoulder for burping. Could your Lo do his tummy time 'on' you?

betterhalf · 07/03/2008 17:08

My little boy has started going for a few days without a poo, then does one ( or 2) then we're back to a few days of not going again. In between times he farts loads and they are really stinky!! Anyone else expriencing this? Is it normal or should I get it checked out? He seems his usual self and isnt out of sorts at all.

BTW, its great reading this thread . I lurk but rarely post but good to know how the rest of you are coping with a new baby and its reasuring to read that you are dealing with mostly the same things and going through the same milestones as me.

AngeChica · 07/03/2008 17:26

Are you BF betterhalf? As his feeds have spaced out a bit I have noticed my DS is not pooing so often - once a day at most. He does terrible farts a lot, usually as he is waking and/or laid on his back. I have read that BF babies can go as little as once a week and this is still in the range of normal...?

Last night he slept really well from 11pm in basket after I had put a book under the top end of the stand to tilt it! Only woke at 2am and 6.45am. By 8am was back asleep in basket til 10am. So I have caught up on loads of sleep! makes such a difference. Previous night had been hellish. I had also had a really horrifying nightmare , that I put LO in his cot and he broke in pieces, and it stayed with me all day yesterday. (Analyse that!)

Naetha the grobag trick had worked wonders thanks so much - I also swaddle his arms in a sheet as he can work them free from the grobag - little houdini!!

betterhalf · 07/03/2008 17:33

Yes, I am BF. The time between feeds have spaced out lately and recently night time he sleeps for between 4 and 5 hours then needs a feed so maybe that explains it then! Thanks for the response.

On another issue ,over the last week he has gotten a rash over his face and behind ears. Its not itching him , and the spots are just red. Any ideas?
I have spoken over the phone to the Health Visitor about it and she didn't appear worried by it and said it was prety normal.

madmouse · 07/03/2008 17:36

betterhalf, for a breastfed baby anything between after every feed and every four to five days is normal in terms of poos. As long as the stools are soft when they come out and there are plenty of wees baby is not constipated.

MamaChris · 07/03/2008 18:08

bluebell - am bf and think period is back (but light) already at 5 weeks! I've read it is possible tho less common for period to return while bf. guess just unlucky

amani - at first tummy time = crying, but we've been trying it every day, and now he will spend a few minutes, especially if I lie down too (so we're face to face) on our bed. i think before he got upset because it was like we'd disappeared.

how much do your LOs sleep in the day? Daniel seems not to at all from about 10am-7pm, except for post-feed power naps and if we're on a bus with him in a sling. then a mix of sleeping/eating late evening and feeding every 3 hours or so overnight. i think he just doesn't want to miss anything, but does anyone else have to encourage their LO to daytime nap, and if so, how?

ayrshirelolo · 07/03/2008 22:23

Evening folks!!! how are you all? Well the Infacol stuff seems to be working well for us (almost too scared to type that in case it jinxes the night!! how sad is that?) anyway, Alex has kind of turned into a model baby again, and is obviously much happier (as am i of course!) with none of that terrible painful crying that goes right through you. She's now taking a 5oz bottle in about 15-20 mins, burping like a Boddingtons drinker and passing out with that knackered contented look on her face! Fingers crossed it lasts.....
Anyway, went and bought a new washing machine today, old one just useless!! Poor man in Curries obviously felt sorry for us, took both girls in with us, explained problem, he's rushed through delivery for MOnday, and agreed to uplift old machine at the same time! What a sweetie! Said he's got 5 kids, and understands the urgency!! How sad am i though, to be excited about a new washing machine? Makes me think, here i am, a reasonably well educated and professionally qualified woman with a responsible job, and i'm now obsessed with burping, nappies, washing machines..... oh well, this too will pass!!
Made an appointment at docs today for Monday to pick up new prescription for the pill, dh has already been to request referral for a snip (bless him! we are definately finished having children! ) but we really don't want any accidents!! 3 under 3 doesn't bear thinking about! We haven't "resumed" yet as i'm still bleeding a wee bit, but would rather be organised up front, as it were! i have to confess although i'm completely shattered all the time i do miss the imtimacy. keep up the cuddles, madmouse, it's important to remember you're still a couple as well as co parents. Hope all the tests for Nathan come back clear!
Fluffy hope the cream sorts out T's rash, i suppose it's better to get it checked out anyway!
Amani i got a leaflet about "tummy time" for neck strength and to preserve head shape (stop them getting flat head at the back!).I think Alex gets bored when she's on the floor, but quite likes being on my knee as she can see more, and likes lying on my chest?
Susie, Alex is really contented to watch the world go by (or is so freaked by her thug of a big sister she's just gobsmacked!!) but yells if she's fed up and wants a cuddle! I have to confess to leaving her in her bouncy chair, moses basket, crib etc quite a lot as i run around after dd1, it's second child syndrome, isn't it?
Anyway, didn't intend this to be so long! sorry!! wishing us all a quiet night! lolo x
