HI all

Had a friend over and her 4 yr old so Ollie had a good friend to play with today. You should have seen the living room after they had finished we were downstairs in the kitchen and could hear the noise but didn't think they were getting everything out.

I didn't go to the breast feedding group today as Henry has 2/3 bottles a day now and felt I would have to lie to the cousellor as she didn't really approve of the 1 bottle a day Shame really as there were a few lovely ladies there but as it is a breast feeding group I'd feel a bit of a hypocrite!

Going to see if there's a mother and baby group we can join..

Strawberry - Definately on for a meet up, how are you fixed in Feb?

Buffy - You are being amazingly strong just getting up each day and facing the world. You have a huge amount on your plate with your other children and with Scarlette being so ill. You did the right thing in asking (Or Dh demanding - go Mr Buffy!) for help. You just need to ride out the next few weeks until the Ad's start to kick in...

alicet · 07/01/2008 14:54

muppet are you still on for ledbury on March?

muppetgirl · 07/01/2008 14:56

oh yes,
btw my brother's birthday is the 18th as was my nan's. Ollie was due on the 16th and we all kept joking that we could make it 3 generations of family born on the same day. Alas, Ollie had other ideas and arrived on the 27th!

Henry gone down for a sleep and Oliver is was cbeebies....5 mins peace

Mine · 07/01/2008 15:16

Stefka - my little one was the same from birth until my HV told me about a baby soother CD which you can get in shops and online from Amazon and WHsmiths.. it worked a treat. Its just a CD of white noise... same as they hear in the womb which helped him sleep at any time of the day and night.
Also what helped me for settling him at night was to have a completely dark room (so no distractions to stimulate him) and put a bit of baby rice in his milk.. thats if you are giving him a bottle. My HV would spiv if she knew i was giving him baby rice in his milk but honestly, his main problem at night was environment and hunger, so i gave him something that would keep him full.

I haven;t looked back since.. his bowel movements are perfectly normal so don't worry about that. He loved it.
I have since moved on to crushing mini Farley's type biscuits into his nighttime feeds which was brilliant.. he now sleeps from 10pm to 6.30am without waking for a feed.

Some may not agree with this, but my mum and gran told me about it and it really was a lifesaver... i found that with my son he cried b/c of colic for the forst 6 weeks of his life, most of which was due to hunger.. he was simply a very greedy baby.
hope this helps.

Welcome Mine

Go Goddess Alice!!!It has taken me all day to walk the dog, find the panels blown out of the greenhouse by the storm last night (and stick them in the shed till dh comes home) and clear up after last nights dinner for us and mum and bro (I do have the excuse that we did have a power cut so no hot water to wash up last night)dh is having "ifit" for dinner tonight...(ifits in he can help himself to it)Alex is refusing to nap anywhere but in my arms...it is taking me ages to type!

Buffy; Citalopram is wonderful stuff..it worked a miracle for me last year...I felt a difference after just 3-4 days even though it says it can take longer to kick in. I hope it works as quickly for you as it did for me...you are back on the way to recovery, just hang on in there one day at a time until they help rebalance things....good on you girl for coping with so much for so long without any help at all. If you need an ear you know where I am..Im just sorry I dont live closer to give more tangible help.{{{{{hugs from me too}}}}}}

Hi everyone. We put our lo in the nursery straight away. Since then, we have stopped over night at friends where she stayed in the same room as us, and i didn't sleep a wink. She's so noisy! I suppose you'd get used to the gurgles, sighs and squeaks if they've been in the same room since day one. Or do you??!!

And talking of teething, we were wondering this, as Josie chews at her knuckles and has started dribbling. I've felt her gums but can't feel any emerging teeth She can also get a bit flushed in her cheeks too. But 3 months is way too early, isn't it? Think i may go and buy some teething stuff too, just in case.

Winnie - i'm near Birmingham, in the south, although i've only just started chatting on here!

Off to get Josie weighed. She was just over 14lbs at 10 weeks. Place your bets now!! x

Mine · 07/01/2008 16:12

i too thought 3 months was too early for teething.. maybe i'm reading too much into in... think my little monster just likes the taste of his own fists!

re rice/rusks... i had to go up a teet to level 2's so they wou;dn't get blocked, which was fine. i now have a baby that only cries when he's hungry or has a fully loaded nappy.
Took me ages to come round to mum's way of thinking as i kept telling her... ' it doesn't say inthe book that i can give him that!" so she threw the baby book away!

buffythenappyslayer21 · 07/01/2008 16:33

floria, how are you?havent text you for ages sorry!!how is alex?

i keep telling myself things will get better, but at times it seems like they wont.i know once the ad's kick in,i'll feel much better.never had these before, was on prozac when i had dd1 and had pnd then, but they turned me into a psycho!!(the mood swings were unbearable, one minute sooo happy i was like mary poppins on speed, and the next i was so low,so im glad gp didnt put me on them again!)

scarlette is currently being weaned.she ahtes it!!her dieticians recommended we start weaning now as she needs the extra calories.id already thought she needed something extra because shes always hungry.as soon as shes finished her bottle and winded shes biting at her hand and screaming for more!shes still on the pepti junior formula that the gp prescribes, and they wont let me change it to a normal hungry baby formula,as they said that the pepti j has more fat in it,which is what she needs.they also told us to do something ive always been told not to..put an extra scoop of formula in her feeds.i expressed my worries about this, but they said as you cant overdose a cf baby with salt, doing it is ok.hv had to reassure me about it before i did do it!but even this hasnt filled her up.so shes on the baby rice, which she hates, and she also has fruit puree, which she also hates!im thinking about getting a creamy puddingy type one just to see if she likes that.hate weanng her early, but there you go!

asfor the ones asking about teething,my 3rd baby had her first tooth at 2months,so i think they can come anytime.i have heard of babies teething from birth aswell!scarlettes showing signs of teething, dribbling alot and ramming her fists so far into her mouth shes making herself gag!(but that is the same as what she does when shes hungry except when her gums seem to be hurting she leaves red marks on her hands where shes bitten!!)

MrsFish · 07/01/2008 16:54

Hello Mine. My nan and MiL told me that they used to put a rusk in the last bottle too

Buffy - glad to hear your are finally getting some help, I am amazed you have managed to cope so well so far

alicet - York/Leeds would probably be better for me too regarding a meet up, the AA route planner reckons its about 2 hours drive

Regards teething, my neice was born with a tooth, it was very weird to see

Ben had his jabs at lunchtime and has not settled since, he had about a 20 min kip and half an hour this morning and that has been it since he woke up at 8.30. I think he is having another growth spurt, he has had 4 bottles so far today since 5.15am and he will have one more before bed. So far he has had 30 ounces, which is what he normally has over all his feeds. HV said to me that if he starts waking up in the early hours again after being used to sleeping through, to give him his last bottle before bed with the stage 2 formula. I am intending to start him on pureed foods and baby rice at the end of the month too, once he is 4 months old.

HE HAS MASTERED RASPBERRIES today, he keeps doing them, makes me LoL he's so funny

ellensmelons · 07/01/2008 17:00

Interesting to hear you're weaning MrsF - and encouraged by it! I want to wean at 4 months, but i've read so much about baby-led weaning that i was beginning to have my doubts about it being the best thing for lo. dd is 13 weeks now, and weighs 15lbs bless her! (i blame her dad, it's in his genes.). i ca't imagine stretching her to 6 months peacefully!. My hv suggestedi put her on SMA whire. Anyone had any experience / tips / thoughts??

Also, Josie has just begun to laugh out loud. Melts your heart.

ellensmelons · 07/01/2008 17:02

i mean SMA white of course.

MrsFish · 07/01/2008 17:08

Well I think Ben is ready for it, he is 13 weeks old on friday and 16 pound so I think he is ok. If he doesn't take to it then I will leave it another couple of weeks. Btw the HV hasn't encouraged weaning, just the next stage milk. I haven't told her I am doing it

I haven't heard of the SMA white either.

theladyevenstar · 07/01/2008 17:20

Mrsf,
I have been giving Zachary solids for the last 4 or 5 weeks now he is 14 weeks now. he loves them lol i bought him some rusks the other day but am dreading opening them as i know i will eat them lolol

Mine · 07/01/2008 17:35

weening already! Do you puree everything or do you leave it a little bit pulpy??
I was thinking of weening early too as my ds has a very healthy appetite so might need to start earlier than normal 6-9 months but am a bit worried i'd be pushing my luck.
Thought rice/biscuits was safe enough until 3-4 months.
HV disapprove of anything unless its recommended by DoH.
What kind of things are you giving???

theladyevenstar · 07/01/2008 18:02

Mine, today he has had, apple and banana cereal, 5oz bottle, pasta bolognaise, 5oz bottle, and has just had chocolate pudding and a 5oz bottle, in between this he has juice and a couple of 7 or 8 oz bottles. I tend to blend the food to a complete puree as he is still so young.

ChocolateHobnob · 07/01/2008 18:03

Re a meet up, I'm up for York or Leeds as long as it's central as I'll come on the train... and also for Berwick (ditto the train).

First day home alone for a while and Rebecca had diarrhoea! Non stop nappy changing all day. I did manage to go out at one point though. And she got some sleep - probably 30 mins this morning and another 15 this afternoon - which isnt that bad for her. Crap night, though.

No domestic goddessdom here I'm afraid, but we do have decent meals thanks to my manic freezer preparation before Rebecca was born! Chilli and tortillas and sour cream tonight. Hungry already...

Can't believe you're all getting ready to weaning! R is still only 7 weeks, 8 tomorrow, and I can't imagine her on solids for a bit. She is a hungry mite today though (probs the diarrhoea).

Mine · 07/01/2008 18:17

theladyevenstar - that sounds fab! Your little one sounds greedier than mine.

I might try one meal a day a see how he gets on....

ellensmelons · 07/01/2008 19:06

My hv also said that she should be 'sleeping through'. When i said she was (ie a dream feed at 10.30 then no milk till she wakes bet 6 and 7) she said 'NOOO, i mean sleeping through! 7 till 7!' i was gobsmacked! Apparently, at her age and weight, she should be doing a 12 hour sleep and i should drop the 10.30 feed. Going to try it tonight, but i'm very sceptical. Bet she wakes at 2ish. Watc this space.

The weaning sounds great, tles! Your lo has a better diet than i have!! Haven't had time to make sarnies today, the lo has only catnapped which means i get very little done, but do get to spend loads of time with her

Mine · 07/01/2008 19:13

i too asked the HV about infants sleeping 7 till 7.... she said it was a myth and that no baby should sleep for so long without a feed. She even said that most adults don;t sleep for so long without feeling hungry, and basically told me to ignore it and not to beat myself up about it.

She thought 10.30 till 6-7 was fine and not to think that all babies were the same.

ejt1764 · 07/01/2008 19:36

ellensmelons - your hv's talking bollocks!

about the dribbling thing - I read somewhere that babies' saliva glands start working when they're about 10 - 12 weeks old, and they tend to find their hands then, so the fact that they're dribbling and eating their hands is coincidental ... makes sense for me!

We have had a mad day today. DS was on INSET, and I had baby yoga - so my dad was going to come over from Ponty to pick him up to go to the train shop to buy some more track (bear with me...)
9.25am - phone call from dad - "Sorry love, my car won't start" AAAAAGGGGHHHHH thinks I, then suggest I drive him up to Ponty, and hopefully get back in time for yoga ... which we do ... but the motorway is horrendous, and the A470 is worse - the spray was dreadful ... dropped Rhydian off in Ponty (about 20 miles away), then dashed back to yoga - was only 15 minutes late.

Then back up to Ponty again to pick up ds and have a spot of lunch ...

to be continued ... her ladyship has awoken ...

muppetgirl · 07/01/2008 19:47

HI all!

I weaned Oliver at 15 weeks (guidlines 16 weeks then) as he was starving and the final straw was grabbing a sandwich off my plate and stuffing it in his mouth...

With Henry well, the guidelines have changed but my boy is way to big to make it to 6 months. At 6 weeks he weighed 13lb 9oz and he's due to be weighed tomorrow and going by his 1lb every 2 weeks he should be over 15lbs -at 9 weeks. There is absolutely NO WAY he will make it to 24 weeks. I'll start with baby rice then banana then sweet potato then parsnip then vegies and fruit purees.

SMA white is the blue tin (red being the follow on milk)
I have alternated breast feeds with bottle feeds and have noticed that the bottle feeds he goes much longer whereas the breast feeds he sometimes doesn't even last 2 hrs. I will do this until his weight gain stops or he shows signs he being hungrier and then I'll bottle all the way before weaning.

Oliver has a healthy appetite eats a good range of foods + veg and fruit. The guidlines are there to have a look at but not all babies will follow them. Don't worry if yours doesn't it just means that your little darling broke the mould and is entirely unique...

I phoned up the drs about Henry's sticky eyes as they are getting worse so I did use the antibiotic drops so at least I could say I'd done what they'd asked. The drops made his eyes 100 times worse so I went back to the drs today. He has taken a swab to find out what the infection, if any, and I have a different set of AB's for Henry to have for a week. We find out the results of the swab next Mon. I just feel so sorry for Henry as I am always poking about with his eyes either washing them or putting Ab's in them. He is so placid and lets me do all I need to and then smiles at me. God I love him xxx

EmMcK · 07/01/2008 20:09

Hello all, so happy to hear about these bonny babies!! Joe is over 14lb at 10 weeks and a gannett of a baby, but I keep meeting all these delicate slim little chaps and feeling like I might have a giant in the making on my hands.
I have a DVD of Harvey Karp and his soothing techniques, and I was going to send it to someone, but can't remember who. Was it you Stefka, because am more than happy to. Have the book too, so CD really needs a home...
Went to visit a friend today who is 37 weeks with her first. So lovely to see her all excited and bright eyed. I gave her a bag of things that I had lurking after Joe's arrival including a packet of maternity pads, then got home and found that my first post-birth period had arrived, and I had nothingin the house. What are the chances of that?
Update of day three of absent husband - coping fine with everyday practical things, but miss having him around to complete our little family. Nice to feel mushy after so many years...

ellensmelons · 07/01/2008 20:11

Hi muppetgirl. josie had a sticky eye when she was about 3 weeks old so i looked it up on the net and some doc said to use cooled camomile tea. I thought what a quack! Butit was still there a week later after using cooled boiled water so i thought what the hell, so i made a cup of camomile tea in the usual way (no milk or sugar obviously!) and used a cooton wool ball to swab her eye. next morning it had gone! Not such a quack...

Ejt - i think she's talking rubbish too! she really didn't like the dream feed thing (but then she'd never heard of it) and said she'd get too used to it so that when she's older she'd expect a feed at that time every night. I'll see anyway - she is gaining weight too fast, so she may go through. or not.

muppetgirl · 07/01/2008 20:17

Hi Ellensmellons (love the name btw!) I'll try the cammomile tea tomorrow as anything is worth a try really.
