Feeding/sleep patterns

My son will be 3 weeks old tomorrow and has been in hospital from he’s been born. He was taken off bottles 3 times and replaced with fluids, nutrients etc. For the last 3 or 4 days he is back to being only bottle fed and the hospital want him to feed 70mls every 3 hours. Only problem is he doesn’t care to wake he would happily sleep over 4 hours and sleeps straight after each feed. Is this common for a baby of his age? At home I will be feeding him when he wants and the amount he wants but under hospital watchful eye I can’t 🙄

How are you getting on @Sweetpea12?

My little one always goes to sleep right after a feed and will do random 4-5 hour stints (though not all the time).

Hope you are OK.

We got home from hospital finally once he started taking the 70mls but he wants to feed every two hours and take anywhere between an ounce or two. Then he goes straight to sleep usually. I’m worried he won’t gain weight if he doesn’t take the recommended two ounces each time. How are you @Mummy2O?

I am so glad you are home. It must be such a stressful time for you.

When will you next see your HV or MW to have him weighed? I am hoping that will make you less anxious once you see he is putting on weight.

I am getting on OK. Still regularly getting coated on sick though. He only ever throws up on me. I am starting to worry if I should take it personally!

@Sweetpea12 hey, when my baby was born she would literally sleep the entire day and night till about four weeks, we would have to wake her to feed her fight to keep her awake during a feed then she would fall back off again, this lasted mainly for 4 weeks by six she stopped sleeping for long periods during the day, she's now 9 weeks and I have to fight to get her to nap!! X

@AnxiousAnnie86 can I ask did your baby gain weight ok? That’s something I’m worried about with Jacob he is taking some bottles but not all and I’m worried because he is only home from hospital and I don’t want him to end up back there x

@Sweetpea12 yes she did, she gained really well, she is exclusively BF. I was worried as I heard a lot of people say it takes an hour to feed but Guin feeds in five mins ish, so I was having to wake her to feed her every 2 hours or so and she would feed for less then five most of the time and go back to sleep, I didn't think there was anyway she could gain but she did! Can you weigh him at home? Glad you are back home! Xxx

@Sweetpea12 they say newborns should be woken to feed if they aren't doing it themselves to maintain steady weight gain, it feels mad waking a sleeping baby though 😂

I was told that once we'd passed the point of DS regaining his birth weight we didn't need to worry about waking him. He's 6 weeks now and usually does 1 6hr stint and then 1 4hr. He does really cluster feed in the daytime though.
