Newborn breastfeeding

I am still struggling with the right latching and I know it will take me a while so not giving up but it’s hard getting it right! Today my10 day old eats every hour or so but only for less than 10 min and then takes a break and does a few min and falls asleep and wakes up again and needs feeding. Today she’s fed about 20 times and my breast are killing me. Is this normal as I am still not there with correct latching or is this a growth spurt so early?

Are you pinching the baby's ears to keep her awake while feeding ? I had a sleepy feeder and that's what my consultant told me. Not meanly or hard, just try to keep the baby awake long enough to get a full feed.

I breast fed twins, my breasts coped ok once i and the babies learned to latch properly. The whole nipple needs to go in.

I used to stripped mine down to the nappy to keep them awake in the new born days
Plenty of lansinoh on your nipples although it does only improve once the latch is right. It does get easier as they get a bit bigger.

Babies that are very young do tend to Bob on and off constantly (and everything gets easier both length of feed sand latch as they grow). However, you should definitely get your latch checked. Is there bf support in your area - try calling the midwife to ask or your local children's centre. Also, La Leche League is amazing for helping with getting bf up and running. Lots is being run in groups and one to one online - you don't need to be committed to bf for years to get help from them (I know some worry that's the reputation). They help anyone who wants some support at any stage. I know That west London LLL is running and open to anyone across the UK joining their calls. There's actually one on a Thursday at 1pm on zoom. Just Google and get yourself registered.

Thank you all for your replies. It’s getting better for sure but not there fully yet. She’s eating now longer than 10 min but heard it’s ok to have snacks of less than 10 min as that’s more for comfort. I checked out LLL website- very useful thank you!

@Leala20 glad LLL was helpful and you're feeling like it is all heading the right way. Bf changes day to day - it also gets easier with time. Snacks are definitely ok too - sometimes it's food, sometimes they just need to be sure of you.
