Dal - ryan is a right cutie!

HammerHeadShark · 01/10/2007 17:43

What lovely babies Sophus, dal and Kyala - yum

Kyala - how old is your DD1? She has a gorgeous smile and looks cheeky in a good way. My toddlers suddenly seem so big now I have got a new baby, when the day before the birth I still thought of them as my little small girls. Is she as pleased as she looks with DD2?

Dal - sorry you are fed up - what did the Hv do (or not do) so that you had to have words? By the way Ryan looks so cute in that picture, i love it when they gather themselves up into a little ball.

The DTs are driving me CRAZY this afternoon - its raining and I think we've all got a bit of cabin fever. They are smashing up lego with a hammer (toy hammer - I'm not that irresponsible - quite) and drawing in felt tip pen all over their hands. But no-one is bleeding or maimed so I think I will leave them to it!

Later x

dal21 · 01/10/2007 17:59

thanks alicet and hammer! we sept ladies have a bunch of cuties.

the HV - well, she finally made contact (ryan is 24 days old, tad late), came to see me. i had no questions for her since mw's had answered all my questions. so what was her one helpful comment? to not swaddle ryan as there was risk of overheating and i needed to be aware of cot death. she must have said the words cot death at least ten times before i stopped her.

no.1 - the house is cool
no.2 - the swaddling blanket is thin
no.3 - he is only wearing a vest under the blanket

it wasnt the advice i have a problen with, it was her manner and her refusal to back down when i pointed out the above. i then asked her if she thought ryan looked hot to which she answered no. she also slated the advice of the midwives saying that their advice was not relevant beyond the first few days of a babies life..since they have no experience of babies any older...

coming to see a first time mum and harping on about cot death, well i didnt think it was the best approach. needless to say - am not seeing her again and i (Politely) let her know how unhelpful i found her advice. no doubt she thinks i am a stuck up cow.

Hello everyone... sorry I've been off the radar for so long, I've been having bfing issues... Luca has been losing weight and my milk production slowed right down. The midwife told me to top up by cup feeding with EBM which was a nightmare. It took me 90 mins to express 40ml, and Luca's been feeding for 90 mins at a time so that left absolutely no time for anything. I was in tears most of the weekend until I spoke to a lovely woman from La Leche League. I think I've got things back on track, I spent the whole weekend and most of today in bed with Luca, doing just about nothing but feeding and lots of skin to skin contact (I realised I hadn't actually had any skin to skin contact since he was born thanks to cs) and my milk production seems to have picked up. I think we're still having a few problems with latching, but his nappies are nice and glowing yellow again after being nasty green. Feeds are still taking about 90 mins and I'm doing them every 2 to 2 and a half hours, so not much time for anything else, even Mumsnet!! All I can say is thank God for La Leche League, what a life saver!!

I hope everyone's well, I'll try and catch up as soon as I can.

Take care xx

Holly29 · 01/10/2007 19:38

Hello - I'm back! Was readmitted to hospital and have been quite ill (brief story below) but am finally home and could cry with relief!

Dal - that HV sounds so ridiculous. Mind you, she has made a point which makes me think - my Mum and I are constantly in battle over George's room temperature, she thinks it is too cold in his room! I will pass on the message. I have not had a visit from a midwife or a HV yet but I live in hope!

Sophus - sorry to hear about your hands. Hope you are feeling better.

So, have had scary time in hospital, I don't want to bore everyone but basically when George was 7 days old I got a very high temperature (40 degrees c) and was a bit delirious, my Mum called my GP who agreed to come out and then sent me straight to hospital.

Got there, they diagnosed an infection of my section wound and put me straight on an antibiotic drip. I was asked if I had shown the swelling to the midwife, but I explained that no midwife had ever come (despite me calling them every day), although I was planning to show her when she did, as I was wondering if it was normal. This caused major consternation with everyone there, who started saying that if only one had come out, they could have diagnosed it in time to give me a dose of normal antibiotics - honestly, people were so angry, especially the obstetrician who kept saying that he was going to make a formal complaint!

It was all a bit terrifying, because they kept saying 'we hope we've caught it in time,' and 'people used to die of this in the old ages...'. Luckily after 24 hours of drip the swelling went down spectacularly and 4 days later I am out.

Aargh! It was all a bit terrifying, but I am on the mend and I managed to keep breast feeding throughout, which I am SO proud of.

Sorry that was so long. I think it was cathartic just to write it all down, as it really was the worst 4 days of my life. Onwards and upwards now. I have just got to stop my Mum going round to lynch the midwives!

Anyway I will catch up by reading all the posts now and I hope you are all having a great time with your new LOs.

Much love, Holly x

ccpink · 02/10/2007 02:34

i've finally made it to he other side!! bf'ing much harder than expected as milk just coming and emilia has been too hungry so have been topping up. think milk on way though as feeling quite sore. good to hear that othersare finding similar prob's. will try to come back when i'm more human

dal21 · 02/10/2007 06:49

holly - so glad you are home and that all is ok! community mw's should defo have been in touch - make sure they are in touch asap as george needs a hearing test/ guthrie test and bcg vaccination in these early weeks (mine were mostly done in hospital - but just incase they werent for you)

The ideal room temp is between 18 and 22 (some places say 20), the rooms actually need to be cooler than we think. our house retains the warmth so at the moment, I only have a thin blanket on top of ryan and in winter i dont think we'll need the top floor radiators on as the heat rises from the bottom floors...makes you think about everything we worry about tho. Our mums had none of this and we are all here in one piece!

ccpink , good to hear you have come through.

Right - DH is off to work so I am back to bed. catch up soon. hugs to all - hopey, really hope today is a better day

She's asleep so I'm finally getting the chance to post - hurray ! Forget the fact that kitchen looks like bombsite after DD'S got their breakfast while I was feeding !!!

Congratulations CC - Emilia is a gorgeous name - must ask if you are related/married to Mcgirr's I knew in Barnet ?

Sophus - you poor love - hope hands all better now ? So glad to hear the visit with your Mum went well.

Holly - am so about your scary hospital experience ! Can't believe mw never came to see you ! I couldn't get rid of mine !

Dal - swaddling is definitely the way to go ! Actually you made me think as our house is quite warm and I've probably been overheating Eloise - swaddling her with a cotton blanket. Our nights are (whispers) actually quite good ! She has been going from 11 til 4 or 5 so I am getting more sleep and look more human now !She is 6 weeks this week so we are having our check up.

Hiwbb - glad to hear your Stepmum coming over again. Take care of yourself lol x

plp - how did it go yesterday ? was thinking of you (((hugs)))

mrs mar - sorry to hear about feeding problems. I went through similar with Eloise (except was told to give ff top ups - actually couldn't express very well at all!) One kind mw told me to eat more unhealthily to help milk supply ! - ie more starchy foods like pasta, potatoes, cakes and have a glass of red wine every day !!
And definitely staying in bed skin to skin helped alot.

hope everyone who is on their own now is getting on ok ? ?

love to all xx

Nettee · 02/10/2007 11:00

Hello everyone

MrsMar - I am having the same problem - so nice to hear that things are looking better for you. We are feeding 2 hourly in the day and I am having to set an alarm clock to make it 3 hourly at night. Amy was sleeping for 6 hours at a time at night which I am sure didn't help. anyway have only done 24 hours of this new system now so haven't had a yellow nappy yet but fingers crossed for tomorrow when she will be re-weighed. We were about 50g away from loosing 10% of her birth weight yesterday at 13 days old - I really feel I ought to be able to do this having had no problems last time and being a midwife but I think I am rushing about too much after DS. Anyway trying not to stress about it as I am sure that would only make things worse

canadianmum · 02/10/2007 11:25

Dal - have total sympathy re: hv, my last one was so utterly useless it was almost funny. Haven't met the new one yet, basically i want her to give me the red book and get lost. apologies to any hv's out there on mumsnet but the ones round our area have a terrible reputation. Feel much more comfortable with the midwives who seem to be totally "on side".

I used to spend ages fretting about room temps and blankets but am much more relaxed this time. My boys were about 9 months during the mega-hot 2003 summer and their room temp was about 30 degrees and they were fine - DH and I were melting but babies were like "whatever!!".

mrsmar - glad you found la leche league helpful, I find that I must have lots of rest to boost milk production particularly in the evening. Try to get as much sleep as you can t/o the day and Luca will surely get his feeds to under 90 mins soon!!

holly - your midwives should be shot, that is appalling, glad you recovered quickly but do make sure you make a complaint.

plp - hope it all went well at the hospital.....

first day on my own went well, mostly napping and feeding between school runs. discovered that it is very difficult to butter toast with one hand though . and type.....

toadstool · 02/10/2007 11:32

Hi ladies, Hopey, hope you're feeling OK today and that the GP has been helpful. Isn't it odd the way babies and feeding differ? Josephine's latch is definitely slipping, and she's now decidedd to go for short feeds at frequent intervals - nice for the mo as I do nothing but sit and feed, but erm... Haven't rung NCT yet, will give LLL a go after your great report on them, - MrsMar! Gearing up to start expressing in preparation for a hospital visit on Thursday - I don't want to expose J to infections in the BRI, and the ambulance crew wouldn't take me, wheelie, baby and pram anyway!
Dal, I avoid HVs like the plague - they seem to be determined to say the wrong thing!

kelmcd · 02/10/2007 11:41

Good morning everyone
Well we put up Arbens cot last night and he settled in it so much better than in his basket, we got one of those sleeping bags which was great as he was forever kicking off his blankets, plus he is able to have the odd nap on his tummy when his tummy is hurting him it is the only way he will settle. We do keep a close eye tho.
We have the feeds down to two a night, 2.30ish and the 5.30ish, sometimes its a lttile longer, sometimes a little shorter but seems to be working out at the moment.
Dal - I haven't even heard from my HV yet, I left a couple messages to see who and when they would be coming to see me but no one has got back to me, not a good impression so far, he is 25 days now. My MW is coming out once more tho so thats good.
MrsMar - hope the feeding starts to sttel down soon, How old is your LO, I remeber Arben doing the same, feeding 2-3hrs but on the boob for bout 90mins of that as well, its knackering but he did regulate it himself eventually I am still giving one small (10-20mls) top-up and one full bottle feed at night!
I seem to have loads of milk, squirts out in all directions at times but it does mean that he is only feeding for bout 15 mins at each feed at the moment, weeing and pooing loads so not overly concerned
My parents go back to Australia today after being here for a couple weeks. Not sure how the rest of the week will be, Arben likes his nanna and pa cuddles. Not sure if i am ready for them to leave but we will manage.
Take care to eveyone else who are here, hope recovery and hospital appointments all go smoothly

dal21 · 02/10/2007 12:20

with the exception of hopeys HV - the concensus seems to be that they are useless! Such a shame that they are let loose on mums at such a vulnerable time. I didnt swaddle last night and ryan still went 3/4 hrs. think i may stay away from swaddling for the time being as read a thread of other mnetters having problems weaning them off it. i may well resort to it occasionally though if he is exceptionally difficult to settle. am currently trying to get him to settle himself as opposed to us having to hold him til he falls asleep.

canadianmum - you said exactly what dh said. what happens to babies in hot countries and those birn in heatwaves here? i am utterly disgusted by her approach.

for those bfeeding...anyone gone to a bfeeding cafe? the nhs run one not too far from me, am thinking about going along on thurs morning. meet some mums locally....either that or go to the cinema where they have a screamers session

to everyone.

Hi everyone, I think this is going to be a long one because for once I have a little time on my hands and I want to catch up with everyone. Sod the housework.

PLP, I hope Cerys got on well at the hospital, and I hope the staff looked after you there. I've been involved in many a MCUG and loopogram in my time at work. Keep us posted.

Dal, when you say swaddling, do you mean that thing where you completely wrap lo in a blanket, like a sausage? Liam has very flappy arms so I'm wondering whether it might be worth a go. He's been a sleeping bag the last couple of nights though, which is easier to keep on him than blankets. About the room temp, I've heard that ideal temp is 16-18 deg. and that really is cool. Like hammer says, what on earth can you do if outside temp is hotter than this? Are we all to get aircon installed? Btw, I wouldn't be happy either if the hv kept going on and on about cot death.

Hammer, hope the colds are getting better. I sympathise about your dd at nursery, as my ds is a bit clingy at pre-school too. Its just a shame with the timing I think, its proving all a bit much for him - new baby, new pre-school. But as you say, I'm sure they are fine within a few minutes of us leaving them there.

Sophus, hope those hands are feeling better. That sounds really painful. at breakfast in bed!

Fio, any respite with the constant feeding yet?

Kyala, dal and sophus - you all have gorgeous little babies, they are beautiful.

Holly, that is shocking how you've been treated, or rather not been treated. Good job your mum and gp were on the ball. Wishing you a speedy recovery. And well done for having the strength to carry on feeding throughout, that couldn't have been easy.

Ccpink congratulations! Emilia is such a pretty name. Good luck with the feeding. (I think most of us have 'topped-up' in the early days too).

ACmum, can relate to your breakfast kitchen! I still haven't figured out if its easier to let ds's get their own breakfast or not, what with all the clearing up I have to do after!

Nettee, I'd say every baby is different, so it'll make no difference at all if bfing was easier with your ds or if you are a mw. Try to get some rest (not easy with a toddler, I know from experience) and what helps me and my milk flow is keeping my fluids up.

Canmum, I have a funny image of you buttering your toast! I'm just beginning again to adjust to doing everything one-handed. That and getting used to drinking cold coffee and tea!

Toadstool, it sounds like you are doing brilliantly after all you've been through with your leg. Good luck on thursday. Make sure the ambulance crew know you have a lo to get back to, ime you could be kept waiting ages for them to come to take you back home, but if they know you have a baby, they might shunt you up the list. Liam's latch has been slipping a bit lately too. Finally figured out though that it was the infacol making his lips slippery. Took me about 2 days to figure that out. I wipe his lips first now.

Kelm, I know what you mean about laying Arben on his tummy - dh sometimes lays Liam across his knees when he is colicky which seems to help. Good luck without nanna and pa, I'm sure you will be fine.

MrsM, how's little Luca doing? I hope you are both enjoying your skin-to-skin time, it sounds idylic (?sp). All that feeding sounds like hard work, I hope you are able to get enough rest as well. It sounds like LLL have been really helpful.

Hopey, I hope you've been able to get some rest too. We're all thinking of you and little Niamh.

Interesting what we're saying about mws and hvs. Here, I've been having better service from the hv team. Close your eyes Nettee and Kelm - I was disappointed with the community mws, they discharged me way too early, knowing I had bad tummy pains which could be a uterine infection. They also didn't turn up when expected, and one time she turned up 3 hours later than arranged. The hv meanwhile have been great. I was discharged from hospital on a sunday and at 9am monday they rang to say is it ok to visit in the next hour. Two came and they were fantastic. It helped that I recognised them from when we all worked together in a&e about 15 years ago. I'm also good friends with a hv who I first met when ds2 was newborn. Funny how services differ from area to area isn't it?

Right, think that's my lot. Nothing much to report this end, just lots of feeding and running after other dses. I'm very fortunate in that feeding is going well, he was 7lb 10oz last week, which is over 2lb gain in 4 weeks. And he looks like he's gained some more since then. Told you it was going to be a big post! Better do some housework now, no more excuses not to. Take care everyone.

kinki · 02/10/2007 13:56

Kelm, Arben is gorgeous too, I love the one where he's 3 weeks old.

sophus · 02/10/2007 14:13

Hands are so much better, just being really rigourous about looking them and it seems to be working.
DP gone to london today meeting and is staying to go to an exhibition and meet a friend for dinner so i will have to deal with the standard three hours of colicky screaming on my own tonight. Bit freaked but if need be we'll go to bed early and just sit out.
Question for you all - do you bath your babies? i haven't done so yet (he's 2 weeks old), just a bit of an occasional wipe over and some olive oil. Is anyone else not washing their babies much?
I need to learn to nap, i'm sooooooo exhausted.
Holly - i would be having a major fit about my lack of care if i were you.
On HV - mine is an angel and dont know how i would cope without her.
