sleeping soundly in the wrong position

hi everyone...just need some advice. my hubby and i slept soundly for 7 hrs straight last night for the first time in 8wks and 3 days due to the fact that i decided to put my LO on her side to sleep. I would like to know what other mothers do. is it wrong for her to sleep on her side? please help

Back in 1990 when i had DS it was recommended to put babies to sleep on their sides, with a rolled up towel behind them to stop them rolling onto their backs.

Not sure if this is still a good thing or what now tho!

DS2 would only sleep on his side with towel rolled behind his back but I don't think you are supposed put them to bed in that position in case they roll onto their front. At the time I was desperate for sleep!

DS2 had refulx so it was the only way he could get comfortable.

Eventually we ended up with a sleepsense monitor anyway so it wasn't so much of a worry, but before I had it if I woke in the night I used to go and check him.

OK, seriously, any health provider will tell you that you must put your LO on her back to sleep because of SIDS.

On the other hand, babies do sleep more soundly on their tummies, thus the old fashioned advice was always to put them to sleep on their tummies. Maybe this deeper sleep in some babies is somehow linked to their SIDS.

All that said, I let my 2 daughters sleep on their sides and tummies when they were old enough to roll themselves over (about 12 weeks). I figured if they could get into the position on their own steem it must be safe for them!

One nice incidental bonus was that their skulls maintained a nice round shape. You do see some kids with flat patches on the back of their heads because they spent so much time the first 6 months lying flat ont their backs.

I put my DD on her side for a different reason completely and nearly fainted when I cam back from the loo and saw her on her front. She was older than 8 weeks but still under about 3 months.
