HI All,

Just a quick note, I am at my cousins at the moment and having a great time. DD has loads to do and DS is so settled he slept in s different room and hardky stirred -also had his first night since in a cot without the monitor - so no going back to it now!

After loosing mum it is great to be among people who remember times from my childhood too! Anyway hope you're all well and will catch up when I get home.

News on GD is that he is starting to come to erms with his situation. DD made him a card which we posted on Firday and that pepped him up no end.

LFM, so glad you're having a good time and that GD is 'coming to terms' - can't imagine that its easy for any of you.

Oli, I think small children are the most effective birth control. I couldn't even think about more until DD1 was starting to settle (although, even at 5 she still doesn't sleep through)

DD2 has the tummy bug now, and keeps bringing every feed up. But she's quite happy and smiley, so I'm not worried.

Yet.

babypowder · 02/09/2007 19:16

OK, worried now. She's been vomiting since 7am, and shows no signs of stopping. Is it unreasonable to ring NHS24, d'you think?

Gloria42 · 02/09/2007 19:17

Definitely NOT! They were really nice to me when I called about DS and he hadn't been sick as much as your LO

Olihan · 02/09/2007 19:25

BP, ring NHS24, if they're worried they will refer you to the out of hours docs. Is dd2 still dribbly and does she have a wet tongue? When ds1 had a nasty vomiting bug the doc said if his mouth was wet he wasn't in any danger of dehydrating. Are you still offering her bfs? I think that's the best thing for tummy upsets anyway, as it's really easily digested.

accessorizewithbabysick · 02/09/2007 19:46

bp, or just go straight to the out of hours doc, I've done it several times & I don't feel guilty cos they never have any patients anyway. If you're worried and you don't feel it can wait until tomorrow, just go. That's what they're there for. Since 7am is quite a long time, isn't it? I'd be worried too [hugs]

FunkyGlassSlipper · 02/09/2007 20:17

Call NHS24 or the OOH doctor. Is she taking any fluids? Dont even try food for now. Start slowly with fluids.

My DD had a temp of 38.8 earlier. I was very worried. calpol did nothing so went to a neighbour and got nurofen which brought it down. She's been off colour and sleepy for 24 hours but thankfully perked up a bit by bed time.

accessorizewithbabysick · 02/09/2007 20:22

Ibuprofen always seems to bring a fever down better doesn't it, fgs? We had one sachet in the house when ds2 got his temp this week. I hate it when they have a temp - ds1 had one of 39+ for 2 weeks before they finally diagnosed ear infection, we moved house in the middle of it and had to take him to a&e the night we moved. Bloomin dr didn't check his ears and I didn't know any better to ask so it went on for another week.
Anyway, I am raving tonight, bp & fgs hope your lo's better really soon.

jabberwocky · 02/09/2007 20:28

So sorry to hear about your little one bp. Definitely go with your mother's instincts.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 02/09/2007 21:14

DD2 has started waving - the royal wave (she's very regal)

Had her Christening today and I am v. tired

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 02/09/2007 21:15

finger crossed for you baby bp

babypowder · 02/09/2007 23:07

Thanks, everyone. We're back now, and DD2 is sucking at a bottle of diralyte. Funny, she's never had a bottle or tasted a blackcurrant but this is going down a treat. She's just got a bug, but is OK despite that. She has been spectaculary sick today, though, and we have both run out of clean clothes.

This whole out of hours thing is a nightmare. Spoke to NHS24, who had to phone me back twice. Then got sent to our local infirmary. After 30mins in the waiting room (we were the only ones there), DD2 vomited profusely, which meant we were seen The nurse was lovely, checked DD2 over, and then went to phone a doctor to discuss the symptoms. Which took another 30mins as they have to phone different centres in succession to get hold of someone. The doctor on the end of the phone wanted a local doctor to check, just to make sure. It took him another 30mins to arrive. After lecturing me on the importance of fluids and sugar in regards gastroenteritis, he then suggested I might want to take her to the surgery to have her checked for a squint. EH??? Wrong time, wrong place, I think.

So, having rung NHS24 at 7, getting to the infirmary at 8, we finally got home at 10:35.

Tell me how this is more efficient and cost-effective than having an old-fashioned out of office service?

Rant over. Sorry its so long.

margosbeenplayingwithmynoonoo · 03/09/2007 00:32

what a waste of time! Thankfully, this means your lo is on the mend. x

FunkyGlassSlipper · 03/09/2007 08:02

glad she is a bit better bp.

dd2 woke wit temp of 39 this morning so we called nhsdirect too! They gotthe OOH Dr to call s which happened withing about 20 mins. By this time the nurofen hd got the temp down again so we'v been advised to go to the GP this morning....

babypowder · 03/09/2007 13:13

Sorry about the rant last night

DD2 is still vomiting, poor wee mite, but she is fine in herself. Its just so distressing to see all that milk coming up, over and over again!

The interesting thing that the mad doctor said yesterday was that drinking sugary solutions when ill increases the amount of fluid that a body absorbs by 2500%. Which is pretty incredible, really. So now I know why they advise drinking flat Coke

Elibean · 03/09/2007 21:15

Hello, O Long Lost ones

Back late last night after what felt like a marathon journey (Brittany sounds so close - next time, I'll go for Mauritius or something ). NO way I will catch up with all thats happened in the last month...so am going to jump back in and catch up as I go along...

That said, really sorry to see some sick babes - BP and FGS, hope both your small ones are better very fast now, sounds horrid: fever and sickness both

In a nutshell: we had a pretty good three weeks, horrible overnight ferry out (me sleeping - ha - on bunk with unsettled dd2, arse hanging over the edge, faulty loudspeaker system that beamed loud messages into cabin until midnight etc) and some grim weather and unsettled dds for a few days, then sunshine, friends and much better sleep for a couple of weeks. But why people talk about 'holidays' when they have small children is beyond me - 'change', 'away', but 'holiday'?!?? I've lost weight in spite of endless croissants, eclairs and chocolate

dd2 is now NINE months old and has her first tooth as of three days ago. BLW has become a resounding success, after all my worrying she has eaten like a small horse and is on three meals a day, plus four bottles of milk. Gorgeous little gannet, like her sister.

Now its time to babyproof and batten down the hatches....imagine lots of you are doing that already? Tips, please?! She can't walk or every quite crawl yet, but rolls clear across the room and can open drawers from her walker

Hope everyone is well, look forward to catching up over the next few weeks (in between unpacking, washing, and panicking about clothes for start of term... )

Olihan · 04/09/2007 07:43

LOL, Eli @ dd2 opening drawers from her walker . Glad you had a good time away, I know exactly what you mean about 'holidays'. If we didn't go to my dad's for ours we wouldn't go at all!

BP, glad dd2 is on the mend, OOH docs is so pointless, isn't it?

Well, just when I thought we had almost cracked the sleeping ds2 changes the rules again. Sunday night he slept through - 6:30 to 6:30 . Just as I was starting to hope...............last night happens.

Bed: 6:45, took 45 mins to settle - not a good sign.

10:30 woke, fed, took an hour to settle,

1am woke, fed, wouldn't settle, fed again, gave teething stuff, finally settled 2:30.

4:45, woke for the day.

I just don't get it. He was doing so well and now it feels like we're back to square one again and I have NO idea what's changed. I was so knackered and frustrated at 2am that I ended up shouting 'just go back to sleep, ffs' at him. Really pointless but I was out of ideas to make him sleep.

Now he's miserable and grumpy and clingy, I'm miserable, grumpy and knackered so today is not starting well.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 04/09/2007 09:07

olihan - just keep at it. the sleep will come, i'm sure.

elibean - glad you had a good 'break' [sniggers] holiday? what's that?

dd2 still not too well. I actually think it might be her top teeth. Still on medicine. Dr said she'd be fine just had to get over it in her own time

FunkyGlassSlipper · 04/09/2007 09:07

bp - how is your little one today?

babypowder · 04/09/2007 09:51

Eli, welcome home! I try to explain the 'holiday' thing to my DH by saying that its just like being at home but with better weather and ingredients to cook with. He really doesn't get it

DD2 is still poorly, but at least the comiting has ceased. The last bout was at 8:00 last night. Now its just the other end we have to sort out. Really unpleasant with reusable nappies [revolted emoticon]

Off to the doctor with her this morning to see about the supposed squint ...

Olihan · 04/09/2007 10:01

BP, last time we went self catering I said to dh that it was just like being at home but with a different view. He doesn't get it though. Glad dd2 has stopped throwing up - could you contemplate disposables til the bug has gone? I think you have a very good reason to switch for a few days .

FGS, hope dd2 perks up a bit more today, I hate teething, cos you never know if that's what it is until those little pointy bits pop through.

You're right about the sleeping, it's just so blooming frustrating when he was doing so well and there's no obvious cause for him to be so unsettled.

magnolia1 · 04/09/2007 10:07

Bp,Fgs, Hope your l/o's are better today xxx

Welcome back Eli, ds1 is also not quite crawling but rolls to wherever he wants. I am yet to baby proof You would think with 5 kids it would be permanently baby proofed!

Kids are back to school tomorrow!! Dd4 is starting reception and as from Nov I will have ds1 to myslef all day every day Actually looking forward to swimming, music classes and parent groups with him

jabberwocky · 04/09/2007 13:00

Here's hoping all the little babies start feeling better. It's so awful when they are sick BP, I would seriously consider disposables for a day or two. Be nice to yourself.

Olihan, do you think it's teeth? Ds2 has two now and he really had a hard time for a few nights with them.

A few open drawers here too. I finally put some rubber/elastic bands on a couple of cupboards and we still had most of the outlets plugged but that's pretty much the extent of my babyproofing so far

weirdbird · 04/09/2007 14:07

Well I am also back from holiday, I survived a whole week with the in laws with not a cross word and it was lovely, I think that has to be a miracle!

The only downside is that a week with 5 adults attention Hannah is now pulling herself up standing and cruising round the furniture and the first thing she did when we got home was start climbing up the stairs She was 8 months yesterday...

Am not getting a lot done, though DD1 went back to school today so its all change again.

Still no teeth here and AF decided to make an appearance on the first day of out holiday, typical!!

Hope everyone is ok, and will try and catch up soon!

Am I the only one with a mostly stationary baby? She's trying to stand up, but she doesn't move very far at all yet!
