July 2007 - yet starting in June!

Well, I can't see a post natal July 2007 thread, so will start this, even though Charlotte, my DD was born 4.5 weeks early in June. I'm sure the other July ladies will be along soon enough.

Have had 2 nights at home now. Yesterday afternoon was fairly distressing as Charlotte wouldn't latch on, and if she did she wouldn't suck. But have got loan of electric pump from hospital, and support from midwives and now managing with comination of breast, expressed and formula milk, sometimes all three in the same feed. Finding it quite emotional, with all the issues associated with feeding one's baby, but trying to stay calm as found out yesterday that getting self into a state doesn't help anyone.

Dh has just gone out to get some things we're still missing, and I'm putting my feet up for a bit. Phil & Ted has just arrived so we might try a stroll down to the ante natal class tonight!

Any how, hope there are lots of lovely birth stories to come from July ladies, and that we can swap advice, give each other moral support etc over the coming weeks and months.

I know i am a few weeks late, but had a dd on the 31st july. 6.15 born at home, anly in labour for 1h 40.

Jennster · 10/09/2007 08:59

All the mums with a babe of each flavour, is it just mine, or do boys pee far more than girls?

pulapula · 10/09/2007 09:23

Hi Jennster,

Ben seems to pee a lot more than my DD did (although not as often now when having his nappy changed which is a blessing!). However, he also has an amazing appetite, so not surprising really.

He is 11 weeks tomorrow, and seems to have no trouble downing a 6oz bottle of EBM, sometimes needing a top-up afterwards. Anyone else's LOs drink this much? However, I shouldn't complain really as for the first time he went from 11pm to 7.30am without a feed! Yippee. Lets hope it wasn't a one-off. I did get up a couple of times in the night to reswaddle and stick his dummy in as he was waving his arms and legs about during light sleep, but still feel more energised from not doing a night feed. It wasn't that long ago he was up every night at 2am for a feed, so I would say to others there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Usually he makes it through to anywhere between 3 and 5am for a feed, so 7.30 was unexpected!

pulapula · 10/09/2007 09:25

Littlepiggie,

Welcome! Wow, that was a short labour- were you always planning a home birth, or was that out of necessity (ie not enough time to get to the hospital!).

What's your DD's name, and is she your first?

typhoonsmum · 10/09/2007 11:01

MOMENTOUS DAY!

DS slept from 11pm thru to 6am so I feel semi normal and DD is at her first full day at school. The house is SOOO quiet.

Just wondering when everyone is planning on putting LO's in their own rooms. DP snores and wriggles in bed which makes the bed creak and I wake up everytime DS make a little noise. I'm scared that we will wake DS up and I can't settle when he grunts. He is only 4 weeks old and while he is waking at night for a feed there is no point in moving him but was just wondering what is the norm.

Jennster · 10/09/2007 11:28

Littlepiggie - Congratulations by the way. Aren't home births fab?

Pula - Bet you woke up with rocks on your chest!

Typhoons - sleeping through at four weeks? Wow! Ds has gone from waking once at between 4 and 5 to waking at 3 and then 6 so think he's havind a growth spurt.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 10/09/2007 12:10

I've been quiet as MIL is staying [rolls eyes emoticon]. And my cooker blew up (literally, with smoke and everything). And LO has had terrible colic.

Happy days!

pulapula · 10/09/2007 12:52

Jennster- yes, I had to express a bit off before feeding as LO has been known to bring it back up when there's too much. I've also been taking fenugreek for a few days to increase milk supply as I was struggling to express enough for his 2 bottles a day so I was fuller than I've been in a long time! I managed to express nearly 7oz from one breast so plenty for his bottles later.

Typhoonsmum- I am tempted to put LO in his own room soon, once he's sleeping through consistently. We are at the stage now where he is getting too big for his moses basket, so the next step is trying him in a travel cot in our room, then travel cot in the spare room, and ultimately the cotbed in DDs room from around 6-8 months. I'm not looking forward to the move to travel cot, as I currently stroke DSs face, hands or tummy to help calm him as he falls asleep, and it's really going to make my back ache from bending over the side. Plus it may be too stimulating for him to have me hovering above him, so may make falling asleep harder.

Cakehead · 10/09/2007 18:32

We put LO in her own room by accident, as it were, last week. When my DD1 had a vomitting bug, I had to have her sleep in the same room as me, so LO got moved into her own room rather early. Then I realised how well I slept without her grunting and groaning in the early hours. And even though DD1 is perfectly well and back in her own bed now, LO is still in her own room. Did mean to move her back but...

twoplusone · 10/09/2007 20:33

pulapula- what s fenugreek.. does this help milk supply come back do you think.. as I only have little drops at mo.. ds will latch on though nicley now.. have been thinking about trying again.. but hardley any milk there...

DD and ds1 both went into thereo wn rooms at 9 weeks.. both startied sleeping through at 8weeks.. am/was hoping Lee would do the same but i dont think so.. not too bad though.. he has a feed about 10ish then 2-3am then 6-7am shen I would be getting up anyway.. so cant really complain at once a night.

Congrats littlepiggie..

pulapula · 10/09/2007 22:20

2+1- I heard about Fenugreek on mumsnet, and there's some info on kellymom about it. It will increase milk supply in some cases, but doesn't always. I bought 100 capsules from Holland and Barratt for £7.49 and have taken about 10 over the last few days and it seemed to make a difference. It might be worth a go, if you want to start feeding Lee again?

typhoonsmum · 11/09/2007 15:04

I spoke to soon. DS was doing really well last night and went straight to sleep after his 11pm bottle (Should have been 10pm but he was asleep) At 3am he woke for another bottle and wouldn't settle. Went downstairs at 4am and watched some stuff I had recorded on Sky + and went back up at 5am. Woke again at 6.30. Gave him a bottle and he cried for 2 hours. Had to leave him crying while I got DD ready for school. Was quiet while we were inthe car and started again after we got back in the house.

emmyb · 11/09/2007 16:21

Just had Lo weighed. he was 15lb 10 at 9 weeks and 2 days

just looked in dd red book and she was 18 weeks when she reached that weight!!

Jennster · 11/09/2007 16:36

Think my two will be similar EmmyB. No idea what lo weighs right now since he was last weighed at 11 days. Will find out at 8 week check next week and let you know, but ds is in 3-6 month clothes already and dd is just in 12-18 months at 19 months. You just never can tell can you?

pulapula · 11/09/2007 16:40

Wow Emmyb, he's a big boy! I think I'll take Ben to be weighed tomorrow as its been a month since the last time.

It's funny that with DD I would take her to be weighed nearly every week (partly because I had loads of questions to ask the HV too) but with DS I'm more relaxed, and I can tell he's growing.

Ben slept through again last night. It's been 11 weeks but hopefully we've made it! But I guess the 3 month/12 week growth spurt is just around the corner to mess things up...I haven't really noticed any growth spurts previously (fed 3-4 hourly round the clock until recently), but this is meant to be the biggie.

twoplusone · 11/09/2007 18:30

Thank you pulapula, I will see if I can get someone at home to go and get me some. Lee slept last night from 10.30 till 6.30.. Lets see if he does the same tonight..

Normally he has 3-5oz a feed he has just downed 7oz !!!!

ChubbyScotsBurd · 12/09/2007 12:28

Wow, all this talk about sleeping through ... I'm so jealous! LO still keeps me guessing, one night he sleeps from midnight until 6, the next night he's grumbling every single hour. It all depends on what his tummy is doing - if it pains him his sleep is very interrupted and he takes ages to settle, if it's OK he sleeps longer and goes down with less of a struggle.

I've been to the local mother and child group today. It was my second time - the first time was scary, nobody really talked to me and I felt shy - and it wasn't so bad this time. I spoke to a few other people with young babies and it was good to have something in common. Still feel really daunted walking into a room full of people who alreayd know one another though, and there's nobody else with such a new first baby. Got to make myself make the effort though.

Next I have to prepare myself for Friday's adventure - I've got to single-handedly get myself and LO to the dentist and I'm also planning to meet a friend beforehand - hands up who thinks it will end in tears and disaster?!

Just had James weighed. He is now 9lb 15oz. Two weeks ago he was 9lb 5. Health Visitor said he must have had a growth spurt last time (He went from 7lb 14 to 9lb 5 in two weeks. In the same time space he has only put on 10lbs this time) He is settling down now. I could have told her that as he has stopped feeding 4oz every 3 hours and gone to average of 4oz every 4 hours.
MIL has took him this afternoon till I pick DD up from school. Managed to get 2 hours sleep and tidy the house! Bless that woman!

dorisofdevon · 12/09/2007 15:40

Hi all glad to hear the sleep is improving for some, dd2 is still really dinky 9lb 2oz (at 9 weeks tomorrow)and only put on 2 oz this week but have had a week of green poos and bad colic so I shouldn't be suprised... just disappointed think I and going to try intoducing a ebm feed late evening to see if this improves things also very interested to read about the fenugeek as I don't think I taking as much care of myself as I did last time......running around after dd1, keep thinking that women the world over get back to walking miles to collect water etc after giving birth so I should just crack on and get stuff done have a mad surge then feel knacked for few days

note to self take more care....or just eat more chocolate (green and blacks of course!!)

dorisofdevon · 12/09/2007 15:44

Just looked at dd1's record and she's even smaller (if that's possible) and she's now a very sturdy two year old so feeling much better..... it's the little things.....

typhoonsmum · 12/09/2007 16:23

dorisofdevon. found Green and Blacks chocolate in Asda for 1.00 a bar. Put three bars in the new pair of wellies I had bought DD and I don't think the checkout girl saw them.

I STOLE FROM ASDA!

dorisofdevon · 12/09/2007 16:25

blame it on the baby!!!!

Jennster · 12/09/2007 17:27

JAM I wouldn't worry about the smiling. DD was 8 weeks before she smiled, but ds started at 4!
