Coleif or infacol?

What could you recommend for my 5 week old who cries from 6 until 11 every night? It's so hard to tell if it's witching hour...

I'd try infacol first op. What you're describing sounds possibly wind related.

Also , consider the bottles you are using (if not bf of course) and try something like Dr browns with the vents.

I hope you find something that works.

Infacol didn't touch my son's colicky crying. Colief worked like magic. Infacol is cheap so try it for one or two evenings if you have the energy, and if it doesn't work, move onto Colief? Or try it the other way round. Colief is a bit of a fuss if you are breastfeeding as you have to mix it with a few drops of expressed milk and give it before a feed, but it was worth every bit of effort.

I tried both and found that colief was slightly more effective but still didn't do a lot for dd.

We started on infacol which worked for so long before seeming to become less effective. Tried colief but that gave DS terrible tummy issues so we stopped that after a few days. Colief is also harder to make up even when bottle feeding as it needs 30mins to sit in the milk to do its thing. It’s also very expensive at nearly £12 for a tiny bottle. We eventually found gripe water helped and that’s what we ended up sticking with. Also consider changing bottles? MAM anti colic are good or the dr browns(slightly fiddly and more expensive)

I know you’ve said you’ve tried everything but a midwife suggested a few sips of cool boiled water to us and it really helped. I also rate Mam bottles.

Charley39, when you say colief have your little one terrible tummy troubles...what did it do?
My DD is 10 weeks old tomorrow and been on colief for 5 weeks (I'm fully breast feeding) and she's suddenly changed her bowel habits. I'm wondering if it's colief...

@3girlmama I didn’t think my DS poo was normal from after about a week of age. Would go every couple of days but would get in such a state and it was always explosive and leaking out the nappy within seconds etc so after research online thought it might be to do with the breakdown of lactose so tried the drops. He had them for a total of 4 full days and in that time he struggled to poo even more so. Seemed to have tummy cramps and pain. Random bouts of screaming in pain different to his colic stage. Also noticed he was farting constantly and they were very very smelly! As soon as we stopped we changed his milk to Hipp and after 48 hours he began pooing ‘normally’ after most feeds etc but not explosive anymore. I read lots of people have great results with colief hence why we tried it. Not sure if this is what you have experienced?

@charley39 yes and no... she has been breaking more wind but it's not smelly. No random crying or pain either. But her poos were originally every feed, sometimes more than 1 poo per feed! Right from birth. Then out of the blue last week she stopped pooing and went 48hr without one! I have her a glycerin suppository (I cut a slither of an adult one I had at home from post op) and she poo'd and poo'd for England! Then went another 48hr! Today she's poo'd loads by herself. I have been taking fenugreek to increase milk supply and I think it might have coincided with that? So I've stopped it and now she's pooing fine...but I also stopped the colief and gaviscon so no idea what it is that didn't suit her. Just hoping her reflux doesn't kick off again! It usually settles a bit around 12 weeks and she is 10 weeks today. The gaviscon wasn't affecting her poos at all and she's been on it since 5 weeks. So it wasn't that I'm sure but hubby said to stop all meds then re introduce if needed

Colief is for lactose intolerance.

@3girlmama yes maybe introduce one at a time as needed and you might be able to tell. It’s so hard isn’t it to know what to do. I felt like we solved one problem and then another appeared! Well hopefully your little one will go back to normal now. It’s really good that she doesn’t get constipated on gaviscon we had to stop that after 48hrs as the constipation was worse than the reflux! Hope things stay good for you all

@charley39 thank you. Yes, we mix up the gaviscon (2 sachets) with 30ml cool boiled water and give 5ml via syringe before each feed. She's almost 5kg now so if needs toner start it will need more sachets per feed so that might constipate her, as it did with my other DDs. She was admitted to hospital at 5 weeks old with her reflux as she choked on her sick and stopped breathing. The gaviscon seemed to help for a while. The breast feeding nurse suggested adding colief in as she observed us feeding and thought what colic. Infacol and dentinox did not help. Colief did, but not sure if was gaviscon or colief tbh! It's so confusing as symptoms can be so similar! Anyway, today she's had nothing at all and I've had no fenugreek and she has been really settled (bedtime feed was a bit iffy mind you)

Tried both. Found Infacol to have no effect but Colief was magic in a bottle for us! Also utilised anti-colic baby massage, and much later (because we didn't think of it) gripe water, which really did help.

We are doing ok thanks.
She started being really sick and in discomfort after 48hr with no gaviscon/colief and I was not taking fenugreek either so I started the gaviscon again and she seems much better. And pooing really well (3-4 times a day) which she wasn't when she was on colief and gaviscon and I was taking fenugreek
My milk supply seems a lot better now even without the fenugreek so I think we will stick to gaviscon only but I am not increasing the dose in case it clogs her up 😳
How are you getting on?

She's not bringing her wind up as well though and therefore still being sick every so often but not projectile now gaviscon restarted....hmmmm.

That’s good to hear that the gaviscon is working well. We’re okay had a bad night after giving him broccoli for dinner resulting in really bad wind and pain so maybe remember that one for weaning time!

None have any evidence base and are all a con.

Colic sucks. It eventually goes away.
