March 2017 babies

So my 9 day old baby boy was delivered by emcs at 37+5 gestation due to presenting breech (waters broke and contractions started). First baby so lots to learn!

Currently giving him expressed milk and formula topup. We tried breastfeeding but there was latch issues, he got very frustrated as he wasn't getting satisfied and my nipple was cracked and bleeding within a couple of days. I then got blocked ducts and the whole thing was a disaster really. I feel like a bit of a failure and did get help from bf clinic for the latch but it was little too late. With the c section recovery I just feel too exhausted to have him on the boob constantly and least with formula he is getting some decent sleep (although I'm usually expressing during this time so don't get a proper rest).

Oh and his fussy time is between 10pm -2am. He tends to feed and need winded on repeat between this time. It's exhausting but tonight I had a nap from 7-10pm in anticipation.

Come and join me for some chat...

Electric pump really is worth the money if you can. I'm trying to express once a day. Can do 90ml in about 15 min just strap it on and sit back. Annoyingly she drinks it in about two mins.

Daphnedown · 19/04/2017 20:43

What kind do you have troodie?

troodiedoo · 19/04/2017 20:53

Ardo calypso double plus. There's a link somewhere on mn that gives you 10% off. I'm hoping I can sell it for a few quid when I'm done with it too.

NameChange30 · 19/04/2017 21:10

Yes they're closed system so you can sell them.
If you know anyone who works for Waitrose or John Lewis, you could ask them to buy it for you with their discount, as John Lewis sell it.

Well my LO is tongue tied, didn't have it snipped though, my OH isn't convinced it's necessary. He's tongue tied and his DM didn't get him done, well that was in the late 70s

Carolann8584 · 19/04/2017 21:15

Told them I would discuss it with him, he couldn't come to the appointment. She said I could call her to arrange it if needed up to 6 months

troodiedoo · 19/04/2017 21:31

Do you feel it's necessary Carolann8584?

Mine is a bit tongue tied but they say they will only snip is feeding is a problem, which it isn't. She does take her time sometimes though. As far as I know there are no disadvantages to snipping?

A friend of mine had her dd snipped privately and saw a huge feeding improvement.

NameChange30 · 19/04/2017 21:35

I think I've already mentioned it on this thread but we got DS's tongue tie snipped and it was definitely worth it.

Why wouldn't you?

Carolann8584 · 19/04/2017 21:42

Think we are getting it done, she doesn't have much trouble with bottle feeding but she does really suffer with wind build up seeing her curl up in pain is awful. Been using Infacol since yesterday and noticed an improvement but if getting her snipped will help on a more permanent basis then it's worth it. Wanted to get her weighed today but didn't have time to get to the clinic and it's only run on a Wednesday afternoon at my practice so will have to wait til next week. Feel like she's doubled in weight lol.

NameChange30 · 19/04/2017 23:07

For several days in a row, DS has fallen asleep around 9.45pm and slept for 3 hours. Today I have been feeling completely exhausted since about 5pm and counting down the hours... but of course tonight he didn't fall asleep at 9.45pm did he?! Well, he's fallen asleep twice but then woken up again (which is worse than not falling asleep at all because you're so relieved and start getting ready for bed and... no). So I am feeding him AGAIN, in my usual spot chained to him and the armchair. Restless legs that I can't do anything about. Feel like screaming.

I know in theory that newborns don't have routines yet but it's very hard not to fall into the trap of thinking the latest pattern will continue Sad

Oh hugh you poor things. DS has already had his first cold, courtesy of his big brother. It was so sad!

name I think the hardest thing about having a newborn is the unpredictability. So we have to cling to any patterns we can find. Fingers crossed a semi-reliable routine emerges soon.

Daphnedown · 20/04/2017 01:14

My news is that DS has randomly forgotten how to latch. Why?!

troodiedoo · 20/04/2017 09:25

Totally Daphnedown or is he just faffing about a bit? Mine does that at times. Annoying.

Daphnedown · 20/04/2017 10:02

I think faffing actually troodie. It's very annoying at 1am!

troodiedoo · 20/04/2017 10:12

I hear you! Ain't nobody got time for faffing during night feeds :/

NameChange30 · 20/04/2017 10:21

Sorry for my mini rant last night... I realised why I was at the end of my tether when I checked my app and realised he had been feeding on and off with only short breaks from 2.45pm to 11pm Shock Confused

Amazingly though he then slept for 4 1/2 hours, which is the longest ever! (Well apart from the first couple of days after the birth when he slept a lot.) DH fed him when he woke up, so I was able to sleep from 11.30pm to 6am - the luxury!!! You'd think I'd feel full of beans today but not really Grin

Really sorry if I'm rubbing it in for anyone who's been struggling - hope it's some consolation to know more sleep is possible and not to give up hope?!

Daphnedown · 20/04/2017 10:30

Good for you name. I guess the cumulative sleep deprivation isn't going to be fixed with one 6 hour stretch though Smile

hugh that's a great gain. You should be really proud. It's so sad when they're all blocked up and can't feed properly. Hopefully she'll feel better soon but definitely worth getting her checked- GPs never mind seeing tiny ones.

Carolann8584 · 20/04/2017 11:37

Well what a morning, first poo explosion. While changing her she spat up most of her feed then once changed she threw up the rest. So changed her 3 times in 10 minutes.

Well I know it wasn't her full feed, that would haven't been crazy.

Well done on the weight gain. Grin

purpleviolet1 · 20/04/2017 17:06

Great weight gain!!

Sorry to hear of the feeding troubles name, glad you got some sleep.

We went out today to a local shopping centre - first outing apart from a fair few appts and walks. It went well! He slept for the whole time we were there and then woke in the car so I fed him there. We are also in the process of buying a new build, just heard it's going to be ready in middle June! We have just signed the missives too so it's all systems go.

Exciting purple

Congrats on successful shopping trip, my LO sleeps through all our outings lol. Which is great execpt I can't nap when she does 😪

Carolann8584 · 20/04/2017 22:10

I feel a bad night sleepless

My DD has had 3 naps today all less than an hour. She hasn't been cranky or shown signs of being over tired. Just been chilled all day.

Just had 4oz and zzzzzz straight away. Let's see how long it lasts.

purpleviolet1 · 21/04/2017 12:02

So sleeping most of yesterday wasn't good- dh had him overnight and said he was unsettled from 2-6am. Not good. We had a few good nights as well. Hope this isn't a step back...
