Our babies are rocking and rolling, crawling and climbing into the second half of their first year.

Let the fun continue...

KitKat - At least you'll have loads of spare luggage space coming home so you can but plenty of goodies out there!

We swapped to water overnight a few weeks ago. Have discovered that evidently DD was thirsty at night, not hungry. She does have marginally less water than she did milk, but no signs of her not wanting the water. Again looking on the positive side though - water is a lot less hassle to prepare and give than milk, so at least that is easier.

Good luck with all of you going back to work. At least you have only had months off. I've had 8 years off work now. At some point I will have to return to work and blimey does that fill me with dread and mega anxiety. In many ways I think you might be better getting it over and done with so that returning to work doesn't loom over you like a lead balloon.

Plus - always looking on the positive side - think of the extra money you will have and all that you can do with it when having two wages coming into the household.

KitKat - Packing for a baby is a mission, i'm not braving a trip abroad while DD is still on formula!

Good luck today Team!

White - Here's a couple of pictures of DD tucking in to her vegetable fritters at lunchtime today! They really are a hit!

Hi all!

Thanks for all the support. It actually went quite well. I'm only doing mornings, so the time just flew by! DD is still a bit poorly so she stayed home with DH. That actually made things far easier as I didn't worry anywhere near as much about her.

I totally agree that girls tend to develop communication skills earlier, whereas boys tend to develop motor skills earlier. Obviously not a universal rule, but many if the babies I've known have followed this pattern.

whiteblossom · 01/06/2015 16:31

Lilone, I love the pics, soooooo cute. I will give the fitters another go ?

When I get chance I'll post a pic of ds in his new car seat...He looks like dr.evil. He just needs a white cat to stroke lol. It the new cybex, bright orange and looks like something off big brothers diary room.

We also picked up a stroller today too, got some fantastic prices. Anyone up north I can recommend a fab baby shop.

whiteblossom · 01/06/2015 16:38

Team good luck at work, take each day as it comes you will get used to it and before you know it.

Kitkats getting some sunshine !! Lovely ?

cookielove · 01/06/2015 17:22

Hello all :)

With regards to development I was told that boys are born 50% more developed physically and girls are born 50% more developed in language which would explain why there is such a range and of course all children develop at their own rate :)

E is crawling, pulling himself to standing on everything, sitting no problem, rolls as soon as you put him down for a nappy change Shock

Not much on the language front, he babbles and shouts so loudly but not much in the way of words!

Eating was going brilliant then he got ill and it has all gone to pot but starting to get better.

He is now consistently sleeping through yay!

But sadly I fell over with him in my arms today, I if course took the brunt of it scared the shit out of me :( he is fine.

FATEdestiny · 01/06/2015 17:33

Well, just to buck the trend, my two girls have been developmentally more advanced as babies than my two boys. As older children (which may change) no gender divide. My eldest two - girl and boy - are sporty and outdoorsy and my 5 year old boy isn't.

I can't say I noticed any difference in them with early communication. However both my boys developed a question word stutter (what, when, where, who) when first learning to converse. I'm told this is not unusual and is to do with the brain taking a while to remember the specific word, so stalling on the first word to give thinking time. Both grew out of once vocabulary developed but interesting to note that it was both boys and not DD who went through this.

Cookies, just read about your tumble. That must have been scary Sad Fortunately babies are made of tough stuff.

Yeah on sleeping through though! Grin

holls2000 · 01/06/2015 19:45

Cookie :-( to tumble, are you ok??

Team, glad today went well.

B has started waking up about an hour after going to bed crying. A cuddle soothes him. He also bangs his head on my shoulder a log when going to sleep...

Acorncat · 01/06/2015 21:05

Oh cookie I'm so scared of that happening, that I'll trip or fall down the stairs, hope you're both ok now.

kitkat ooh Majorca sounds nice! I went years ago and really liked it, keen to go back soonish. Nightmare to have to take so much stuff though.

team glad today went ok

DS seems to be going better now, only 1 explosive, clothes soaking nappy today.

FATEdestiny · 02/06/2015 13:00

Glad your DS is better Acorn

Was my DS(5) sports day today. He's so damn competitive! Was great fun though. Another sports day tomorrow for the older two.

DD enjoyed it. Found her a corner and she just pottered around climbing on stuff. Completely missed her morning sleep though, which has thrown a massive spanner in the works for the rest of the day.

OP posts:
lilone1234 · 02/06/2015 13:51

Oh sports day! I hated it with a passion and managed to be sick that day for most of my school years! Hopefully DD does not inherit this hatred from me!

Hope you're alright cookie - so scary to fall while holding the baby. I still don't like people walking around with DD, especially outside, for this reason.

FATEdestiny · 02/06/2015 14:29

Sports day as a parent is great to watch. At my sons age it's just playing games really, nothing competitive about it really.

What was super cute was seeing all the little 3 year olds playing with the "bigger" 5 year olds (it was a joint nursery and F2 sports day)

OP posts:
holls2000 · 02/06/2015 15:06

I hate sports but I love sports day...even now, as a teacher!

B had his 8 month check. Stayed just above 75th centile for weight. Massive growth spurt in the last few weeks and has jumped from 75th to 91st centile fir height, and his head continues to be, erm, quite big!

He went to bed at 6 last night, cried at 7, woke at 10 then slept through till 5, but oh goooood how do I get him to sleep longer than 5 am?!? Don't get me wrong, I like the uninterrupted sleep, now I just need a bit more!

FATEdestiny · 02/06/2015 16:16

There's a long thread on the sleep board currently about a 6mo waking at 5.30am everyday.

DD is currently "sleeping through" (it's not - wake up time is far to early for me to consider it "through") until early morning. She wakes for a drink around 5.00-5.30am.

She doesn't settle back to sleep as easily as she would in the middle of the night. I could easily give up trying and get up. But with some lie-down cuddling, re-swaddle and dummy she does eventually go back to sleep. She's easy to lift back into her cot once asleep too, thankfully.

Nazly · 02/06/2015 22:58

Ds is now 24lb 10oz, just touching 98% now... So he is same weight of an average 1.5 yrs old; No wonder I am having trouble carrying him in a sling now... Any sling suggestions for heavier babies?

I need ideas for finger food please blw ladies ; or any good book you could introduce please?

Who introduced guess how much I love you? I loved the book x but ds is not as impressed as me at the moment, although I am sure he will be impressed sometime soon... Got three tiny board books by fisher price (the book people brought it to our office) they are lovely...

KitKat1985 · 03/06/2015 01:17

Warning night time rant alert! I'm so fed up of being awake half the night. I'm so tired. I feel so bloody angry right now. I'm having to sit here and write this to stop me going in and telling her to shut up, because I can't do this anymore. She's crying again and I've been in several times already but just cries as soon as she's put down. I feel I literally have nothing left to give her now so am just going to let her cry. Bad bad mummy.

Acorncat · 03/06/2015 07:20

DS has lost weight, hopefully just from being ill. He's 5oz lighter than he was 2 weeks ago Sad

Nazly I use a boba 4g, I find it ok if I'm out for a proper walk but just pottering round the shops makes my back ache pretty quickly. Do you carry him on your back? I still front carry but really want to get him on my back in the hope that'll be easier. Just not been brave enough yet. He's only 21lbs though so a bit lighter. Finger foods - steamed veg (carrots, brocolli, sweet potato, parsnip, potato), toast, breadsticks, organix crisps, rice cakes (with topping). Fruit is quite slidy. All my suggestions are dairy, soya & egg free as that's all I know, I'm sure there are plenty other normal ones though.

kitkat we've had one of those nights as well, made more frustrating by a good night previously where he only fed twice and slept soundly. He seemed uncomfy in my bed so tried him in the cot, where he promptly bashed his head off the rails, so much crying and back to my bed for an all night feed-athon. I can't leave him to cry, he just gets more and more wound up and I'm a woose

LillyBugg · 03/06/2015 07:44

I use an ergobaby and DS is just shy of 22lb. I front carry and it doesn't hurt my back at all. I'm surprised the boba is hurting acorn. I had one on loan from a sling library and didn't have any problems. I also use a ring sling for around the house and i've got a mei tai on the way in the post. Baby carrying is addictive!

I haven't yet mastered back carrying either, my dh back carries (with my assistance) but I would like to carry DS on my back alone soon. It takes practice!

Finger food...a favourite here is banana bread. 2-3 mushy bananas, 4 tbsp of self raising flour, an egg and a handful of raisins. Mush together. Put in greased loaf tin. 35 mins on 180. DS loves it and it keeps for about 5 days wrapped in foil, he has usually eaten it all by then. That recipe came from the yummy discoveries baby lead weaning book which I've found really good. Simple recipes.

Sorry you had a bad night kitkat :( you're not a bad mummy. If leaving her to cry saves your sanity for a while then you absolutely did the right thing.

holls2000 · 03/06/2015 08:34

apples we are in the north and g use Paul stride in York or kiddicare.

TeamEponine · 03/06/2015 10:17

Hi all!

Just a quick message to let you know things are going well. DD is settling into nursery fine and I'm starting to get back into the swing of things at work. It does feel strange, but I think it's all going to work out well. I'm so pleased I managed to arrange to work mornings only. It really feels like the perfect solution for us.

Kitkat, don't feel bad, and you are certainly not a bad mum! I've been there many times. I usually take a few minutes in a different room, take some deep breaths and try to calm down. Sleep deprivation is a form of torture for a reason!

I may not be able to post on here quite so often now I'm back at work, but I will be reading regularly and will try to post when I can. Grin

ApplesTheHare · 03/06/2015 10:24

Thanks KitKat why is it that everything seems worse in the middle of the night? Don't feel bad for letting her cry, sometimes it's the best option when you're at your wits end. Hope your day is a bit better than your night.

Thanks holls I'll try Paul Stride as I usually work in York Smile

Nazly I'm surprised you can carry your ds at all at that weight! DD is now 19lbs and I've given up with our carrier.

How often do you all Calpol your babies? Between dd's cold and teething I feel like I'm giving her Calpol every day atm. I asked the doctor how much was too much and he just said give it whenever she's in painConfused

ApplesTheHare · 03/06/2015 10:24

Team cross post, really glad it's going well! Smile

ApplesTheHare · 03/06/2015 11:48

Lilly I meant to ask, do you keep banana bread in an airtight tub or just foil? DD loves it too but I usually throw it after a couple of days. Would be great to keep it for longer.
