Thanks girls. I will take her in with me when I have a shower later instead of leaving her with dp. Have popped out and got supplies ready for a lazy day tomorrow. Poor mite, I've been letting her nap in the car seat today cause she's found it easier to breathe. Almost tempted to do it overnight if she really can't settle any other way

Ark your DD is a good sleeper though I think you still have a good chance for a decent night the one the rest of us call decent anyway Wink

TwigletFiend · 16/04/2015 19:55

Oh no, poor BabyArk! DD just coming out the other side of her cold here, she's had Calpol 4x a day 4 hours apart for 2 days and a dose morning and evening for 2 days now. While she had her bath I shut the door and ran the sink with hot hot water and put some infant Olbas oil in it, which seemed to help. We have a small bathroom and v hot taps though! Also propped the legs of her cot up on some books so she wasn't lying flat. Hope you can nip it in the bud before she's too miserable!

haventgotaclue1 · 16/04/2015 20:42

Ark, am touching wood that we are also seeing the end of DD's first cold - she's had it for about 3 weeks...Sad. I went through a load of different things and each Pharmacist I asked said we were doing everything we could. So here's the list:

  1. raise the head end of her cot / basket so it's on a slight slope
  2. use Snuffle Babe (like Baby Vicks) on her chest and soles of feet (!) - I used it every time I changed her nappy
  3. nasal spray - think it's made by Calpol - basically a saline solution that I used whenever I felt she needed it
  4. Baby Olbas oil on muslin cloth put in cot bed at night and kept near her during day
  5. Steam! Whenever I or husband had a shower, she got put in the bathroom with us Smile
  6. I did use Calpol at night when I was desperate - i.e. she sounded really bad and was obviously distressed

The other thing I did was BF her more frequently as I wanted to make sure she had enough fluids in her....

Apparently you can get these things called nasal aspirators I think - basically enables you to suck the snot out of their noses...I didn't go that far... Grin

Good luck and hope it goes really soon!

MrsAukerman · 16/04/2015 20:46

We have a nasal aspirator! Tbh he's never been snotty enough to get a satisfying go on it. It's a great game though.

Arkkorox · 17/04/2015 05:41

Well after an hour of her just nodding off then waking up struggling to breathe I ended up putting her in the car seat so she was more upright, I padded it out as much as I could to make it flatish but she was out 10 seconds after I put her in it so it must help. She's just had a bit of bottle with some calpol in ( I'm not going to piss her off at this time in the morning trying to syringe it in!) and she's back to sleep so hopefully that will get her a bit more kip. She's worse than yesterday though Sad

Oh Ark Sad I've got complete sympathy for you. It's awful isn't it because you really want to make them better as they sound so terrible. Dd sounded like she couldn't breathe. ..just like a piglet at night. During the day she sounded better and it must have been because in her pram she was at a bit of an angle so not flat on her back. When she was really bad dh ended up sitting up with her in a chair so she could sleep. ...really hope that it makes a hasty exit. ..Flowers

Arkkorox · 17/04/2015 09:21

well she's only just woken up! But sneeze sneeze sneeze since she has Sad dps at his mums for the weekend cause she's away but it's quite nice cause were just going to take the duvet on the sofa and spend the day lazing around. I'm very lucky that my dog is such a good girl, she's not bothered if she misses a walk especially if she can sunbathe on the patio! Plus we were out with her friends for 3 hours yesterday ( which dd slept for most of!) so she's pretty pooped!

Strawberryfield12 · 17/04/2015 14:00

Poor babyArk, hope she gets well soon...

Right, now is the question. What do you do with the baby socks so that they constantly don't fall off? Any particular socks brand that stay on or some gadget which works? Have had enough of pooling them on all the time. Had hand knitted baby booties before and they were fine, but now that it is too warm for booties, but too cold for bare foot, the socks are pain in the neck.

haventgotaclue1 · 17/04/2015 14:27

Apparently strawberry there are some things you can get to keep them on - try jo jo mama bebe website. I have the same problem after cutting into the tops of dd's socks as they were too tight and leaving marks on her legs.

Thisisimpossible · 17/04/2015 14:29

Strawberry, try 'sock ons' or I double bag the socks - seems to keep them on better!

Strawberryfield12 · 17/04/2015 14:50

Thank you, have been looking at sock ons and was wondering if they would work. Will give it a try!

Annarose2014 · 17/04/2015 14:58

Strawberry we try to buy folded over socks and then unfold them so they're knee high. At least they take longer to fall off!

DS seems to be going through a phase where his nap cycle is still only 30 mins but he needs more. So he wakes up cranky and needs more napping, but he's pissed off and has a meltdown. And he won't be right till he gets Nap No2. Really what he needs is a good hour and a half in the morning at one go. When does that start happening?

Today I was so desperate and he was so whiney after waking from his nap that I popped him in the Ergo and it did calm him down and he fell asleep for Nap No2 within 10 minutes. Now he's all sunshine and light again!

The Ergo is amazing. Yesterday we walked into town, went to the shops nipping up and down the aisle, and walked home again and he was quite content the whole time! So handy and quick. Not banging into anyone or bumping over cobbles! After I have to return it to the sling library I'm going to buy one.

TwigletFiend · 17/04/2015 15:28

We have sock ons and they work well, you just need to wash them every couple of uses to stop them stretching out and losing their grip.

ladydolly · 17/04/2015 15:39

Yay anna so glad you love the ergo, me too, life is much easier with it!!

Gap socks are the only ones to stay on for me, I bulk buy in the sales.

dd has been napping since 1! She did an hour alone, I popped in to feed her back to sleep at 2 and stayed with her and just did another feed to sleep. Totally out of routine but I'm knackered so thankful!

ladydolly · 17/04/2015 16:35

Right she's still asleep, shes never done more than an hour before... I'm gonna pay for this later right?

Arkkorox · 17/04/2015 17:23

Looks like you've got company this evening then ladydolly !!!

Ladies on the calpol bottle it says don't give more than 4 doses in 24 hours, dd had a dose at 5, 9:30, 2 and I was going to give her another dose at 6 but then I guess I can't give her any to go to bed with at 10?

OP posts:
Arkkorox · 17/04/2015 17:24

I'm pretty sure she has a sore throat, she actually sounds different at the moment!

OP posts:
MrsAukerman · 17/04/2015 18:00

Yay Annarose2014 glad you are enjoying carrying him.
We have received our first set of sock ons today from eBay (genuine but slightly cheaper than jojo) they do work but I think he'll figure out how to take them off sooner or later!

haventgotaclue1 · 17/04/2015 19:59

Ark you're right. If you gave her the 4th dose at 6pm, that's it for the 24 hour period...

Think dd may be entering one of those Wonder Weeks...either that or it's her teeth... or she's simply being a right pickle every bedtime this week. So basically I haven't got a clue (.....) what's going on, but she's really hard to settle down to sleep each evening. She kicks off when DH takes over (as he has done since about week 5 and she's been fine with it until this week); takes AGES to settle (we have to get her asleep before we can put her in the cot bed); and everything just seems so fragile - she'll startle herself awake just as she's about to go into the cot bed and then we have to start from scratch again. It's knackering. So far tonight the bedtime routine is 2.5 hours long.....Confused

Arkkorox · 17/04/2015 20:11

That sounds like fun havent little madam.

I've skipped the 6pm dose so she can have the one for bedtime. She hasn't got a temp and is now talking to the dog in her bouncer so I think she's okay other than sounding like someone's put a peg on her nose! She was sick earlier but it's just the gunk that's gone down the back of her throat I think. Dp wanted to take her to the doctor but she's not got a temp and her breathing is fine so I think just some calpol and rest ( hah!) will be okay

OP posts:
Strawberryfield12 · 17/04/2015 20:12

havent does that mean you've been trying to put her to bed for the night since 5.30pm? Maybe it's too early and she simply isn't tired enough? What if you tried to put her down at 8pm or 9pm? Maybe you could save yourself few hours of pain?

haventgotaclue1 · 17/04/2015 21:27

Sort of strawberry...where the yawning / grizzling starts, we're taking that as a cue that she's tired (normally around 5.30 ish) so we then change her into her night clothes; clean nappy etc. I then bf her which takes around 20-25 minutes (she's usually pretty sleepy by then but not asleep) and give her to dh who tops her up with formula. That can all be done by 6.30 and she can be asleep by then. The trick is to get her into the cot bed without waking her up!

I don't think she'd last until 8pm...she'd be SO cranky! Tonight she fell asleep around 6.25 but then startled herself awake. Dh eventually put her in cot bed around 8.20... wonder what time we'll be going in again? ??

Hope everyone else has a good night Smile

ladydolly · 17/04/2015 21:45

Unbelieveably she went down at her normal time of 7pm with no fuss at all, even though dp isn't here to do his chill out/story time. She's just woken and fed back to sleep as normal. Wonder if its the leap?

omama · 17/04/2015 21:52

strawberry definitely get yourself some 'sock ons' they are brilliant. DD has never yet lost a sock. Why I never had them with ds I dont know! And Amy they honestly dont come off Smile

Glad your dd has perked up a bit Ark - hope you have a decent night.

havent how old is your dd now? Does she still have a nap at teatime? We are having to restrict dd to not napping after 5pm if we want her to go down well at bedtime. otherwise it can take 2+ hrs to get her down.

DD's 2 front teeth have cut & after nearly a week of horrifically disturbed nights, she seems to be having a much more settled evening, thank god! Lets hope the rest of the night goes ok. I think she's having a bit of a growth spurt too, she's suddenly draining her bottles so we'll be making 7oz feeds from tomorrow!
