Zana 'The Rod' is 'a rod for your own back' that well meaning but useless other people often talk about with regards to parenting a baby. Worry about The Rod later, when you have an older baby. While you have a little baby, you really don't need to worry bout bad habits. At this age they are reversible.

Mis Weaning is 26 weeks here. And that is only first tastes and textures. Weaning in the first weeks does not replace milk feeds at all really, so she's still be having as much milk.

Inbl00m · 10/01/2015 09:55

holls I could have written your post. My mum is so anti dummy she told me dd will get 'hooked' and have it until the age of 10! Been trying it this week for naps and it gets dd straight off as opposed to spending 45 mins rocking a crying tired baby to sleep. Do you just use yours for naps?

Lol ladies 'The Rod' must have been invented in the 50s when they used to leave babies in the garden under cat nets!

Nazly · 10/01/2015 11:10

Good morning all ; red ds was supposed to be born on 5th Sep but he is 12th August ; he will be 5 months this week, but the things I mentioned has been going on for quite a while, some of them like fear of plastic from birth really (or rather when we took him from intensive care)
I know about stranger anxiety but he is not there yet; if any one gives him attention he smiles...

The thing is I meet quite a few other mumies and babies the same age every week and none are like this; sensory has at least 15 others and none of them gets nervous; I also feel it is more like crowded place anxiety rather than stranger anxiety...

I think I am going to ask the specialist next week in our appointments even if he thinks I am a mad/nervous ftm

Nazly · 10/01/2015 11:12

Zanashar I didn't mean that, was just saying some facts about my needy babyConfused

holls2000 · 10/01/2015 11:18

inbloom I use it just for naps. was using it just at night but then thought sod it and use it for when he naps in the day - mainly in cot but also if he is struggling to get to sleep in bouncy chair.

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 16:39

It is unusual to come across any first time mum who goes yes, I will be using a dummy for my baby. Because most FTM think that they will do perfect parenting of the perfect baby - and that doesn't involve a dummy. But once you are a parent do you realise that neither the perfect baby nor the perfect parent exists.

My first born was 20 weeks before I tried a dummy (out of desperation). Suffice to say, I have taken a dummy with me in my hospital bag when giving birth to subsequent babies.

Getting rid of the dummy is a hassle. But you have one week of hassle when the dummy fairies take away the dummies, compared months and months (and months and months!) of hassle teaching baby to self-sooth without it.

Been out for the day today. DH has got all the usual Saturday housework jobs done that we would normally share between us, on his own. DH and 4 children been shopping and everyone's happy. I come home to dinner in the oven and children playing nicely. My DH is awesome

lilone1234 · 10/01/2015 17:33

Fate - your DH sounds like a rare breed! I was pleased today because DP had the baby for a couple of hours while I wizzed around doing jobs before he went to football!

Anyone else's little one doing happy screaming yet? It's Molly's new favourite thing, so cute. She also roars lol.

Ah yes the infamous Rod. Bringing guilt to any 'easy way out' since way back when!

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 18:15

Re cookie mentioning earlier "I too am forgetting the ages of all the babies", on the October thread last week they asked for a quick 'about us' post from everyone, because we had all forgotten ages and stuff about each other.

It was a really useful thing to do and bought a lot of lurkers out into the thread to take part. So would you like to do a bit of an About Us post here?

You can write as much or as little as you like. You don't have to answer all questions below, just as much as you want to in whatever formal you would like to. But to give you some ideas:

Baby
Age and age adjusted
Boy/Girl
Name
Weight/Centile

You
Region, county or county you live (whichever you feel comfortable with, if at all)
Number of children
Age, work, thoughts on more children etc etc

Plus one interesting fact about you

About Us

Felicity (Fliss, Flick or just "Smallest") is 15 weeks, born 26th September. She was weighted last week and was 15lb 8oz, 91st centile.

I'm 38 and from the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire boarder. I have four children: DD10, DS9, DS5 and DD15w. Fliss is out last planned baby, I definitely feel "done" now.

I have been a SAHM since 2007. Professionally I was/am a secondary school science/chemistry teacher

Two interesting facts

I am Tawny Owl at Brownies, been a member of Girlguiding since being 7 years old

I believe that a higher force has decided that I should not have an October baby:

October 2004 - DD was planned for. She was conceived the month before we officially started TTC
October 2005 - DS was planned for. It took an extra month to conceive.
October 2009 - DS was expected. He arrived end of September
October 2012 - EDD. Miscarried end of April
October 2013 - EDD. Miscarried in March
October 2014 - DD arrived 26th September

holls2000 · 10/01/2015 19:01

Barney born by c section due to being breech on 18th September

weighed last week (don't you all know it) and was 15lb 5oz but not sure what centile it is. he is v long and was 75th last time he was measured having been 25th at 6 weeks.

me:
live north yorks. am a music teacher teaching nursery-y6 children. am 34 (had to think then).

KitKat1985 · 10/01/2015 19:19

Jessica (1st baby) born the 12th Sept. 40th centile weight, 90th for height!

I live in East Sussex, married and am 29. I work as a mental health nurse.

Zanashar · 10/01/2015 19:22

Hi all, hope everyone's having a good weekend so far.
Went sofa browsing with DH and DD. Came home not speaking to one another after I got annoyed at him for criticising my driving.........for no good reason. Okay now but he should, know by now to not do that!
The dummy has literally been a lifesaver Fate. And as you said I was hell bent on not using one but on day 3 I caved (@ the insistence of my SIL, mother of two) and so glad I did. Usually it's used to get her off for naps and bedtime and if she does fall asleep I tend to remove it.

About us:
DD is 16 weeks today. Her name is Zaynah and on Tuesday she weighed 12lb 9oz
This puts her at about the 25th centile (3 weeks prior she was only 10lb 5oz and just on the 9th Sad)

I'm 36 and FTM.
Im hopefully going back to work in October (used all of last yrs holiday allowance to bump up my maternity leave) on part time basis. I'm a pharmacist by trade.

Interesting fact?
7 years ago I learned to scuba dive to 30m despite being a v poor and scaredy cat swimmer (never ever again!)

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 19:30

There's a Girlguiding campfire song called Zaynah. It is spelt differently but pronounced the same.

I'd love to go scuba diving!

Acorncat · 10/01/2015 19:33

DS is 18weeks, weighed this week at 17lb6oz (91st), he's my first.

I'm 29, live in Scotland. Unsure about future children, at this stage of sleep deprivation it feels like a no!

I can't think of an interesting fact!

SparklyReindeerShit · 10/01/2015 20:16

I'm a lurker, joined right back last jan from the conception buses. Name change a fair bit and don't often have time to write much!

Dd is dc2, 17 weeks born 2 weeks late
Is just over 91st centile for weight and 98th for length

I'm 32 married and live close to Fate by the sounds of it! Wondering exactly where you are now! Grin

Interesting fact, I can touch my nose with my tongue?! BlushGrin

RedToothBrush · 10/01/2015 20:26

DS is not quite 19 weeks, 12lb 15 / just under 9th centile but 98th for height!

I'm 36 and live in the NW. DS is and will be an only child. I'm currently underemployed rather than unemployed

I like music, travel, photography and family history. I'm scared of heights and can't swim. So obviously I married a climber and kayaker.

DS's second name comes from his great, great, great, great grandfather.

Zanashar · 10/01/2015 20:26

Forgot to mention we're from Birmingham.
I'd like another but not for a couple of years.
Fate I need to look up this song now :)

lilone1234 · 10/01/2015 20:56

Hello all. I'm 26 and from London. Molly is our first child and we are hoping to have more in the future. She's 16 weeks - 17 on Monday. Born 15th Sept and is 75th centile. I work in finance/complaint handling but not sure I'll be going back...

Always had to do interesting facts as ice breakers at work, used to decide which one I would use from my rotation in advance lol. Today I'll say that I own all series of Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman (anyone know it?! Usually no one does) on dvd.

KittyMittens · 10/01/2015 21:16

Am also a lurker, been following since this time last year.
I'm 36 & living in Dublin. Tabitha is our first, born on 21 September so 16 weeks tomorrow & currently weighs 14 lbs.
She is named after the cat in Beatrix Potters books - Tabitha Twitchet!

Nazly · 10/01/2015 21:27

DS is 21w 5d but he should be 18w; if you missed all the thousand times I went through the story (sorry all) we nearly missed him at Birth, so glad and thankful he is fine now.
Based on weight, He was born @50 percentile, then down to 25 then back up to 50, 75, 91 and last time two weeks ago slightly higher than 91st and 19lb 4oz ; they never measure height here Sad

I am ftm and 37yrs ; this whole baby thing was so difficult I very much doubt we will ever have another one although I originally thought either none or at least two !!!! Handling one is difficult enough, how do you handle more you super mummies with more children?

We Live in Surrey and normally commuted to London for work, but have changed company and work closer to home; job : consultant in energy & engineering ; and as you all know will go back to work very gradually on part time basis soon...

What else? I can't really think of an interesting fact right now -boring, I know

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 21:28

live close to Fate by the sounds of it

Ohhh. I know of two boys born around the same time as mine, but not any girls. I'm quite near IKEA?!

Fate I need to look up this song now

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 21:31

Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman

Oh my word. Yes, I remember! Grin

I own all 7 series box sets for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Blush

For those of you with no interesting fact, come on. There must be something!

holls2000 · 10/01/2015 21:54

I used to love Dr Quinn.

rather sadly I have watched the entirety of The West Wing twice since B arrived. when it finishes I weep as I feel I have lost friends. sad or what?!?!?! Grin

FATEdestiny · 10/01/2015 21:58

I've not seen The West Wing, but often cry at stuff so nothing to be worried about there.

Mentioned to my DH over Christmas that I'd not seen The Lion King (unusual for me to have not seen a Disney movie) and to look out for if it was on TV over Christmas. It wasn't. He came home from work on Monday having bought me The Lion King on DVD. I watched it on Tuesday. Cried.

marie1w · 10/01/2015 22:34

I lurk and jump in on occasion... Been around since last Jan, can't believe it's been a year!
I'm 30, teacher also from Birmingham.

Erin is 17 weeks tomorrow, was 14lb 2oz two weeks ago. 75th centile. Also don't measure length here, makes me mad ?? . First baby but hoping for more in the future when I get over the shock of this time around.
I remember Dr quinn fondly from Sunday mornings, and had a friend who was buffy mad as a teenager ... Anyone remember little house on the prairie!?

Interesting fact...have given my poor daughter several nicknames already, including button, Princess fancy pants and Crabby apple. We all have nicknames in our family, only use real names when we are in trouble.

Just to add thanks all regulars for keeping me sane over last few months. I'm quite a chilled person but when I start to get tetchy about sleeping or eating or whatever I usually find someone else is experiencing it here which really helps.
