His temp went up to 37.7 during night then back down to 37.3 just with taking off layers and feeding... I am keeping an I on him as we have a doctor appointment tomorrow anyhow... Haven't called anybody yet as he doesn't look too bad this morning and temp kept down as 37.3- but I am nervous I may do some damage :(

Joys of being a first time mum..

TeamEponine · 09/11/2014 11:30

Nazly - how is little one doing?

TeamEponine · 09/11/2014 11:33

Opps - cross post! If in doubt, try calling 111 to ask for advice? Good that you already have a docs appointment for tomorrow. Hope he's doing ok.

Naz at around 2ish-am everyones temp goes up a lil better (found this out when ds was in hospital) I agree your doimg the right thing and I hope its nothing wrong with him and if there is (hopefully not) that hes sorted out first thing with the gp.

ella im sure naz mentioned him being over 12 weeks? iirc?

TeamEponine · 09/11/2014 20:16

Ella - sounds wonderful! I really wish our family were closer. It would be great for the little one to spend more time with the family, and not just for babysitting duties Wink

TeamEponine · 09/11/2014 20:19

Opps, posted too soon...

Nazly- how's your little one doing now?

Has anyone here used infant gaviscon before? We gave DD two sachets of it last night. It seems to have helped as she has been far more settled and happier, but her poop now looks like puréed sprouts! Is this normal?!

polkadotdelight · 09/11/2014 20:33

team we were prescribed infant gaviscon on Friday and DS is a little constipated now. Be careful with the dosage as I got confused! It seems to have helped us here.

misog2000 · 09/11/2014 21:27

Emily was prescribed infant gaviscon last week, we estimated her weight to be under 4.5 kg so she has 1 sachet per bottle for up to 6 bottles (which isn't enough really as she has more than 6 feeds a day), when the HV weighed her last Tuesday she was actually 4.4kg so should be over the 4.5kg now so should be having 2 sachets per bottle for up to 6 bottles.....what I want to know is do you think I could give her one sachet in each of her bottles (between 8&10) so still using under the recommended number of sachets in 24 hours just spacing them out differently?

I'm going to ask the doctor when I see her on Wednesday but just wondered if any of you experience of baby gaviscon?

We have our 6 week check on Wed can anyone give me an idea of what it entails? I don't think my stitches healed particularly well so I am guessing she will want to take a look at those Blush you'd think giving birth would stop you feeling embarrassed about getting your undercarriage out but it doesn't seem to have worked for me! Looking at the page in Ems red book it looks like a repeat of her post birth checkup for her, but wasn't sure what else went on.

Team Em is on gaviscon and her poop is quite green and stinks! I thought it was the comfort milk causing it but it could be the gaviscon

Nazly · 09/11/2014 21:51

Thanks ladies ; he is 12.5 weeks, gave him calpol today and his temp has been below 37.5 all day - he is very sleepy, but woke a couple of times and was normal then - he just brought up a whole lot of milk that I had to change my entire outfit including underwear (sorry tmi) plus his entire outfit- I wonder where all these milk were his tummy seems small...! I have to set an alarm to check his temp tonight; last night for the first time in his life I had to wake him not the other way around and he was too hot both times I woke him..

Our appointment is tomorrow pm so hopefully he will be fine to wait...

Nazly · 09/11/2014 22:04

Re Gaviscon, we have a long experience of using it, nearly 10 weeks, a few quick things
six times is maximum not what you can use... the couple of times we gave him Gaviscon 6 times a day he got quite constipated. So be careful with that; you might end up wondering if constipation is worse than reflux i found the right balance to be 3-4 timesxsingle sachet when he was less than 4.5kg and 2-3 timesxdouble sachet after
I found the effect of impact will be there for a while after they take it-

Right now ds is on one-two times double sachet which works fine -
If your LOs are bf then expressed milk is a lot better than water for gaviscon

Nazly · 09/11/2014 22:08

Correction: is the max of what you can use not the dosage of what you have to use...

P.s. Misog gaviscon doesn't make the poo green, it make the babies constipated or the poo ticker

SeptemberBabies · 09/11/2014 22:19

Naz - why do you have to set an alarm to check his temperature in the night?

OP posts:
misog2000 · 09/11/2014 22:31

Thanks Naz it must be the comfort milk making it greenish then as I thought originally, don't know what it is for you in that case team sorry.

Does the gaviscon work for more than one bottle then? I had assumed as it kind of sits on top of the milk stopping it coming up (how the doc described it) that once her stomach emptied it would be gone and not work for the next bottle?

I know it can make them constipated, she has cooled boiled water between most feeds to try and stop it (as recommended by doc) and she is ok so far. Thanks for replying, nice to have someone who knows about it from a practical rather than medical perspective to advise

SparklyReindeerShit · 09/11/2014 22:31

Misog - my 6 week check consisted of being asked how I felt, could I pee/poo ok, what contraception did I want.
Dd was stripped off, hips checked, eyes checked and back checked. She had been weighed the day before by hv so no need for that again.
Just a bit of double checking things really.
With dd1 I had problems with a tear but that was dealt with at a seperate appointment with gp so maybe mention it if you've not seen anyone else yet.

TeamEponine · 10/11/2014 00:02

Think I've just discovered the problem with infant gaviscon. She is really straining to poop, and when I just changed her nappy (TMI warning) she was mid poop and it looked a little bloody. No blood at all in the nappy and no temp. Think it is just from the straining. She's clearly quite sensitive to the gaviscon as she had two sachets across two feeds night before last, and one sachet between feeds last night. It did help her to be more settled, but will stop giving it to her now. Poor little thing, I feel awful for giving her something that caused this Sad

Nazly · 10/11/2014 00:41

Misog Doctors told me to reduce number of gaviscon in 24 hours little by little when I feel he is better before stopping it completely. The way they described it to me was that it mixes with milk and thickens the milk inside the tummy preventing it from coming up. For bf babies you just mix it with water and use it between feed so it thickens the breast milk in tummy

About how long it lasts, I guess digestion systems in different babies is different, ds had dirty nappy every 2-3 hours at birth, but now he has only one or two per day as he got older so the milk doesn't come out of digestion system immediately. In my experience right now, the 12-17 hours after Having Gaviscon we are all fine and then the effect wears off... But when ds was 2-3 weeks I gave him Gaviscon every other feed and it was fine then.

Strange how different the advices are by different doctors, I was advised not giving any water to ds ...

September last night I noticed he doesn't wake up by himself when he is sick and his temp is up and each time I woke up by chance his temp was up but once I take him out of crib and feed him his temp goes down again... That's why I am setting alarm to check his temp

polkadotdelight · 10/11/2014 04:09

Thats really interesting to read about the gaviscon. I was barely given any advice or instruction on it and much prefer the idea of only 2-3 doses a day.

ilovemonstersinc · 10/11/2014 04:18

I see your awake polka lol.
I was going to post but thought will do jn the morning.

My ds gastric paed recommended babies were weaned from 4months old. He said the advice is always changing every few months but thats what the current advice is. I see him start of next month will see what he says. Hes one of Europe's leading gastric paed dr.

polkadotdelight · 10/11/2014 04:30

Again thats really interesting too! DS is a big boy, was 12lb 13oz at weighing last week when he was just over 5 weeks. My mum has been goinh on and flaming on about how he isnt going to make 6 months for weaning and its stressing me. Almost all health professionals have also said 6 months apart from one health visitor who also said she thought guidelines were changing again and it could be 17 weeks at the earliest. Obviously we are a long way off that but it is good to know.

Part of me is dreading weaning as a friend is currently doing it and complains that she spends all her time either pureeing or feeding - is it really like that?

DS has fed and is asleep on me now (along with the cat) so in a few more minutes I will be sneaking him back in his pram and fingers crossed he will stay asleep!

Acorncat · 10/11/2014 05:41

DS just slept for 3.5 hours in his basket, maybe we're finally making progress! His ranitidine dose has been doubled which I presume has something to do with it. I've been wary of trying Gaviscon due to the constipation issues, which despite the gp saying are rare, seem to happen to everyone! He seems uncomfortable after each feed but think that might be a wind issue rather than a reflux issue Confused

SparklyReindeerShit · 10/11/2014 07:21

Polka, dd is big (14lb at 6 weeks) but we won't be weaning early and had no mention of it from anyone.
With dd1 we waited until 6 months then fed her small portions of our food. No purée, no mashing and she managed fine. She would have a milk feed (bf) then offer of solids. Don't stress about it too much as it's only as hard as you make it and can be quite fun! Smile

polkadotdelight · 10/11/2014 07:37

Thank you sparkly. We are both veggie, I cook lots from scratch and don't add salt so although I think quorn is a no no (I will research properly closer to the time) I would prefer to do it your way!

ilovemonstersinc · 10/11/2014 08:20

Hv said earliest was 16weeks. I wont be waiting until 6months. Ds1 doesn't count really due to his problems. Ds2 was weaned around 18weeks and he loved it.
You will know when your child is ready

RedToothBrush · 10/11/2014 08:53

DS is a big boy, was 12lb 13oz at weighing last week when he was just over 5 weeks.

Yikes! That's big. DS is 10 weeks and only about that! He's still tiny but has been consistent on his growth curve. Its amazing how much difference there is.

My HV said the same - that the guidelines were changing. She seemed to think they would say something like 5 - 6 months as a rough thing rather than being so set in stone as they currently are. I don't think size is anything to do with weaning though; DS's cousin was still pretty small when she started weaning. She was 16 weeks. Her parents are both doctors and said there was no way they could let her go longer as she was screaming to try their food. They weren't too bothered by the guidelines and felt they were ridiculous as their daughter was clearly ready. I suspect DS is liable to go the same way, judging his personality and behaviour. He seems to be slightly ahead with milestones and already is a little nightmare when he smells food and he loves watching me eat. We've given him a couple of fingertips of sauce to try already and he pulls comedy faces. (on HV advice which surprised me tbh). If I'm honest I'm kind of hoping he will so I can be freed from expressing and maybe have a bit of a growth spurt so he catches up on a few centiles. I do not want him to be tiny like my family. I'm still pretty much exclusively expressing (though he will occasionally go on the boob but he gets upset with the speed of the flow) which takes me 5 hours a day. I'm down to 3 sessions a day though, which is a lot saner and manageable but it still dominates what I can do.

Part of me is dreading weaning as a friend is currently doing it and complains that she spends all her time either pureeing or feeding - is it really like that?

Baby led weaning is different by all accounts. The point is to get them used to the textures and learn to chew rather than just eat it. Which makes a lot more sense to me, as how did people puree everything in past centuries? And given I'm already spending so much time connected to a machine I'm not overly worried about the prospect!
