So DS seems to be on bottle strike now.

After months of not wanting boob and developing bottle preference, he decides today for no reason that I can fathom that he doesn't want the bottle.
At all.

In desperation I offered him boob. He has pretty much only taken any amount that way today. No fuss at all on one side (but I haven't had much luck with the other - I've always had real issues with his latch on that side though). Its unheard of.

I swear someone has switched my boy in the last couple of days.

In other news, I am now going to have to be careful where I leave him, as he's found out a way of being mobile already. He tried to make 'a run for it' along the bedroom floor on his back today, much to his great delight (I didn't leave him unattended during his attempt). He managed most of the length of the room before getting hiccups and needing to be picked up.

I have a developmental leap going on here haven't I?

No rolling yet mind.

Nazly, might be worth hand expressing a little before feeding your DS if FATE is right about BoobRage and The Bottle. On the rare occasions I do get DS on the boob, making sure that there is fast flow straight away really seems to help, as well as timing it so he's not so tired. There are also definitely times during the day when he's simply in a better mood and more patient and willing to try than others. Usually after he's just had a nap rather than just before he's due one. Otherwise he just tends to throw a hissy fit.

Nazly · 19/12/2014 05:37

Thanks ladies for your suggestions... He woke for a feed (while almost asleep) and was fine on boob and emptied one , but I know that maybe because he was almost asleep.

Last night it wasn't like he didn't want to to on boob, he would start but after a few seconds and having a little milk he would get frustrated and cry or scream - I thought it could be wind but in previous occasions wind would sort itself out in an hour max, not last night. I thought it could be reflux, but when he took the bottle he invalidated both assumptions.

Could it be the taste of my milk that frustrated him that much?

At this hour, after feeding him, I had to express the other side as was getting painful...
And two conclusions, firstly Fate (I think it was you) you were right in that expressing is not indicative, I got 150ml in 12 minutes from one side when full , but 150 ml is still not much as in the past couple of weeks he hasn't been feeding for very long unless asleep ..
Secondly for Red, the content of fat in an empty breast is definitely different with a full one and my boobs are hardly full these days... (Although it appears you may not need this info any more :) )

Red the move is certainly interesting... Nothing like that here, although he managed a few inches on his tummy , it was after attempting hard and getting frustrated towards the end

Acron ds was born with some difficulties and they had to do a blood test for him a couple of months ago, as they were doing the test anyhow, they decided to test for milk protein too.

It is certainly interesting what you say that he got worse again, my gp told me it was unlikely his reflux got worse after getting better for a while - I think he just didn't come across one and didn't know- so he advised me against adding Gaviscon dose or starting Ranitidine, but the way ds has been getting uncomfortable again when feeding, and not wanting to feed as often or as long as previously, makes me feel reflux is getting worse...

holls2000 · 19/12/2014 05:55

Sorry Nazly can't help on the bf frobt, myself and DS were spectacularly bad at it.
no sign of moving here. or turning over. hrme is holding his head up pretty well just not straight yet. if we hold him up he weight bears on his legs.
what age do they sit up?

holls2000 · 19/12/2014 07:52

So my two good nights were due to the jabs. 1.30 and 5.30 feeds last night.

Can I ask a couple of qus...

Anyone ff...do you do a dream feed? Does it work? How do you go about it

Also..anyone else feel hot and sweaty at night, I think my hormones are resetting themselves but my goodness it's a bit unpleasant!

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2014 07:56

Pretty sure it sounds like bottle preference and boobrage Nazly. DS usually does that if I attempt to breast feed him. I don't really have a lot of advice to offer on that one as I didn't even attempt to get DS to stop (though I think there were additional issues when he was smaller with his latch which he seemed to grow out of).

Maybe try a different teet with the bottle which has a slower flow. They get bottle preference as with the bottle he gets milk faster and easier and doesn't have to work so hard. By switching to a slower flow teet it might negate some of the perks of the bottle.

bananapickle84 · 19/12/2014 08:09

holls we do a dream feed if DS hasn't had enough milk during the day (which we are doing every night atm because he's been poorly).

We just lift him from the cot, position him for feeding and put the bottle in. He doesn't wake and can take anywhere from 3-8 ozs. We then wind him and put him back to bed all without him waking!

Some people wake their babies for the dream feed so there may be other advice out there.

Nazly · 19/12/2014 14:42

Yeyy, he is back on boobs today as if last night never happened.
I don't mind if he gets boob rage just before bed; that gives dh more to do!!! But I had some spicy noodles yesterday and I still think it could possibly be the taste (I read food taste lasts a min of 20 min and max of 8 hours in breast milk and then it goes away... )

One habit ds has developed is clamping nipples; so painful, I was unable to teach him not to up until now

I am going to work xmas party tonight, hoping leaving ds with dh will be more successful this time! Dh is already telling me not to stay long and to come home after dinner and not to have too many drinks!!!!

Red does your ds still prefers boob today?

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2014 15:59

Well I've figured out why he's doing it.

Comfort because he's teething.

He seems better all round today but getting him to eat is still a bit of a battle. I don't want to rely just on boob, simply because he doesn't seem to be getting a huge amount and I lack confidence in it. I have no idea how long is a decent session. But I'm willing to do it if it means he actually eats.

I'm just worried as we have 6 hours in the car tomorrow and we are going out for lunch too, so its all going to be a little stressful and difficult.

lilone1234 · 19/12/2014 16:30

I hope the boob and battle wars stop for everyone soon. These babies are tricky, as soon as you think you have them sussed they throw something else at you!

Molly has an awful cough - really chesty and barky. She's bringing up a lot of phlegm and was hysterical with it last night until she coughed enough to vomit then settled. She's a bit sniffly too and I've had a cold so not surprising that she would catch it. Has anyone else had babies with cough like this? She had jabs this morning too - told nurse about cough it she was happy to do it if no temperature. She said a chesty cough is normal and DP also thinks it's just a normal cold cough. Most of the time she's fine in herself but occasionally gets very upset with a coughing episode and you can hear the fluid in her throat. (I make it sound like this has been going on ages, only started yesterday!) Think will go Dr on Monday if no improvement. Pulled her crib against my bed last night as I was worried about her choking on mucus.

Got calpol out to give but she was screaming too much but has fallen asleep on me now!

lilone1234 · 19/12/2014 16:35

Also, red do you think teething because of nipple clamping? What signs does he have?

Sometimes DD chomps fists, very dribbly and rosy cheeks but no real signs of discomfort and actually think the hand chomping for other reasons than hunger or teething is because it's this age they are discovering hands, so difficult to know why they are doing it. When I googled a chesty dribbly cough it suggested something called teething cough, which I'd never heard of before!

So for those that have done it before, how do you know if it's teething?!

FATEdestiny · 19/12/2014 16:46

Hi all

Great news about breastfeeding Red! Remember you cannot know how much he's getting from the breast, you just have to trust from your own body that it is enough.

I have had to put the fourth side of our cot on today because DD is officially rolling. Wednesday night she rolled from cot to my bed but I assumed it was a fluke. Last night I had to return her 3 times because she'd rolled into bed with me. I still think it's fluke, I don't think she can deliberately roll or control it yet.

FATEdestiny · 19/12/2014 16:55

"how do you know if it's teething?!"

Generally it's retrospective. You see a tooth and then have a slapped head epiphany - Oh, that was why he's been grumpy/dribbly/feeding more/grouchy/tearful etc etc.

Red cheeks have been the most consistent symptom I've found.

Cutting a tooth takes a couple of weeks so if there is no tooth in a fortnight it probably wasn't teething.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2014 17:00

DS has had rosy red cheeks for the past two days...

TeamEponine · 19/12/2014 20:28

DD is nowhere near rolling, and she screams within a few seconds of tummy time. I think that side of her development will be delayed due to the harness. Not sure how to get her to do tummy time! She is, however, almost sitting up Shock She has the strength to sit, she just can't quite balance yet.

Been a funny day today. She barely fed and really fought me at every feed from 10am until 5, when she had a proper feed and fell asleep. Woke at 6.30, fed again and fell straight asleep. She's still fast asleep on me now. So she's been asleep since 5, and normally she is ready for bed at 7. I'm totally confused as to what might be going on with her and slightly scared at what might happen tonight!

Acorncat · 19/12/2014 20:40

No sign of rolling here, due to a lack of time spent on his back I think. He loves tummy time though. Also noticed today how well he can sit up, with a properly straight back but still obviously falls forwards or backwards. He seems to be working on his core muscles as pulls himself forward when he's leaning back.

It's funny how they pick a couple of things to work on, pretty sure he'll be one of the ones that doesn't bother to roll or crawl but will just shuffle then walk. He can support his own weight when he stands, but again obviously falls forwards or backwards. Funny little creatures.

With the teething thing, teeth can be rumbling for weeks/months before anything appears. DS had had red cheeks and dribbles for about 4 weeks now.

I'm a bit frustrated as I've delayed DS's second jabs as he's had a cough and cold (but no temperature) and the dr said he couldn't have them. Now I learn he could have had them and now he's going to have them on Christmas Eve Hmm

Oh the joys!!

cookielove · 19/12/2014 21:20

For the first time ever Eli has fallen asleep at 6.45 he slept till 9. I changed him for bed and got a bottle ready (while he screamed blue murder) and then had half of it and is fast asleep. Gonna move him into his cot soon!

FATEdestiny · 19/12/2014 22:03

I don't think DDs rolling is anything to do with tummy time. Indeed her second response (after the shock of realising what she's done) is to scream when she ends up on her tummy.

DD has a very strong leg kick - she moves around her cot at night by huge legs pulled up then quickly straightened kicks shuffling her whole body around. If she happens to do one of these massive two-legged kicks off-centre, momentum means she ends up on her tummy.

Plus I often hold her hand in the night. So if she does a big off-centre kick and is anchored down on one side by me holding her hand, she ends up face to face in bed with me. Scared the life out if me every time!

So the cot side is on for now, until she gets better control, of her movement.

Nazly · 20/12/2014 00:21

Acron how interesting, ds movements and strengths are exactly as you described; precisely! I guess it partially has to do with reflux and not spending time on their back

KitKat1985 · 20/12/2014 04:07

Jessica hates tummy time too. I'm not consequently doing it as much as I probably should. Even when I do ahe lasts about 30 seconds max before she's crying and I have to pick her up, so I doubt she's gaining much from it. Is it worth persevering?

No sign of rolling yet either. She is however good at holding her head up and likes to stand and weight bear on her leg. She has quite strong legs I think and has started throwng them in the air when laying on her back.

More excitingly Jessica has started properly laughing now. She was started to titter a bit last week but my Mum was playing with her earlier and she was properly laughing. Cutest thing ever.

cookielove · 20/12/2014 08:30

Eli refuses to roll too, I think it's cause he knows I want him to Grin He has gotten onto his side from his back a couple of times by swinging his head and legs at the same time he seems to be doing it on purpose! He can be hit or miss with tummy time, some days he'll do 20mins or more others a few seconds and then it is THE END OF THE WORLD ShockHmm

Someone up the thead asked about settling to sleep after winding! We wind Eli on our shoulders he always goes to sleep like this!

holls2000 · 20/12/2014 09:16

b hates tummy time too. he faceplanted the other day. I think maybe I am not doing it right..n

Nazly · 20/12/2014 10:57

For those whose LO hate tummy time, have you tried using a small cushion or something to help them while they get used to the idea? I used one of those neck rests you use in airplane initially and he absolutely loved it. No need for anything now as he enjoys keeping his head quite high

Somebody asked about angel care; can't remember who it was; we have it and it is quite sensitive. The matt is quite small but it doesn't matter what size it is, wherever on the mattress something moves (or breath) it detects the movement . The other good thing is it comes with sound monitor so hits both purpose...

The other monitor which is attached to nappy is good but not for us as ds sleeps on his tummy- if your lo starts to roll then that may be an issue. On a positive side as it is mobile you can take in anywhere, travelling, car seat, etc....

TeamEponine · 20/12/2014 12:19

For those of you with slightly older babies, does this sound like the three month growth spurt?

She's gone from feeding every 2-2.5 hrs during the day and 3-4 hrs at night to 1.5 hrs during the day and every two hours at night. She's sometimes in a happy mood, but she's often grizzly and out of nowhere will just start screaming. This has all been happening for two or three days. She has also been sleeping loads over the past 24 hrs. She fell asleep on me at 5pm yesterday, and other than feeding every two hours, she slept til 6am. She was awake for 45 min, slept for 3.5 hrs (boob in mouth and feeding off an on for that whole time), was awake for an hour and is now asleep on me again after feeding.

I was freaking out that she's ill, but she has no temp and her nappies are fine. Might this be a growth spurt, and if so, how long do they last for?! Thanks Flowers
