Anyone got any ideas how I get DS to do more than one sleep cycle at his lunchtime nap??

He needs more sleep but wakes after 40 minutes then I resettle him and he does another 40 minutes.

Would be a lot more restful for me and him if he went straight through! I don't remember having this problem with DD.

Nazly · 26/11/2014 12:49

Banana I want to know that too

FATEdestiny · 26/11/2014 13:17

I could be wrong, but I thought that everyone (adults, children, babies) wakes very slightly, kind of gets disturbed in their sleep, following a sleep cycle. Most don't notice though because they go straight back to sleep.

So could it be more to do with self-settling? My DD doesn't do blocks of sleep in the daytime like she does at night, but will still sleep for most of the time though the day (until just when I need to start making dinner)

She has her daytime sleeps in the bouncy chair, which I move around the house with me if I'm upstairs/in shower/kitchen etc. So I'm never far away to bounce if she stirs in her sleep, to gently rock her back to sleep.

I would guess those regular stirring are sleep cycles. She wouldn't settle for the 2 hours-at-a-time daytime naps in her cot or moses basket because of the need re-settle her in the day.

Does anyone know any tricks to get EBF baby to poo? It's been since fri and previously he was at least 4 times a day?!

Nazly · 26/11/2014 14:13

Ladies a question - ds used to love his bath time and being in the water, however it is two evenings that he start crying in the bath - and what has changed? His body/hair wash... In an attempt to save money I moved from "burts' bees baby" to "Johnson baby" brand and the shop has replaced my order (to Johnson good night or sth along those lines)
Both nights he started crying a few seconds after using the wash stuff - I am wondering could it be that? Perhaps the smell puts him off?!!!!

I have to admit burts' bees is just something else... But I didn't think babies may have a strong opinion either way on their toiletry!!!

Nazly · 26/11/2014 14:15

Allis my way is to give him 15ml or so of cooled boiled water ; but my hv said if you drink orange juice it make them go?! Not sure about hv advice but water works for us

holls2000 · 26/11/2014 17:37

we do the 40ml cool boiled water thing morning and afternoon if he hasn't been for a while Smile

TeamEponine · 26/11/2014 17:56

Have you tried tummy massage? That used to get my little one pooping. After a warm bath is even more effective!

Nazly - not sure about the bath thing. Is baby more tired? DD can often be tearful in the evenings just from being over tired. Or maybe they just have great taste in toiletries Wink

Holls - I've been tearful and feeling isolated recently too. I spoke to my HV about it today and she was saying that 2-3 months is often the most difficult time for mums. I know that I need to start more actively seeking out social interactions, but I'm really shy and hate socialising! Just trying to build up the guts to do it. You are doing a great job with your baby! I love the idea if looking back at photos and videos from a few weeks ago. I might do that later.

FATEdestiny · 26/11/2014 19:01

I think baths are mainly down to luck. If you've had no-tears baths up to now then you've been very lucky. Sometimes we get smiley no-tears bathtimes. Other times she screams though it.

I very much doubt it is anything to do with the hair/body wash you are using. Just one of those hit and miss things. It won't be anything you've done differently.

Allis, I would be very worried about constipation in a breastfed baby. I have only ever known very loose poos (in varying colours) when breastfeeding so am not sure how baby could get constipated. I'd see the doctor if it was my baby.

bananapickle84 · 26/11/2014 19:06

Allisgood things I've heard that work are you drinking lots of water and orange juice. Is your baby distressed with it at all? If not don't worry just yet, bf babies can go a while sometimes without pooing.

After asking about sleep cycles the monkey slept for 2 hours without waking up!! Why can't babies be programmed?!!

holls2000 · 26/11/2014 20:46

team - I know exactly what you mean. I keep having these wobbles so hv said she will see how I am at xmas but might do somethibg to help in new year. I go to various groups but have found a lot to be v cliquey. howevwr went to a lovely music group this week and today weny swimming and the ladies there were lovely. I just want to.hold up a sign saying "PLEASE love me"!!! had a really good day today and my smiley boy is back after jab-gate though was a bit screamy due to no poo (here we go again) earlier.
I have found the combination of warm bath, massage, bicycle legs, water leads eventually to poo-losion!! xxx

jaykay34 · 27/11/2014 06:15

honey Yes you certainly did help. I am now incorporating more naps in the day and my baby is so much happier. Thank you Smile .

whiteblossom I have white noise baby on my tablet and phone - it was the first app that came up when i typed it in and it is brilliant. There are a variety of sounds on there and also a timer. It's worked wonders in getting my baby to have a daytime nap.

Allisgood1 · 27/11/2014 12:26

Thanks all. He pooed Smile luckily while I was out and my friend had him Smile it was a mess and required a complete outfit change! So hoping he goes back to normal again as ruining outfits is not good Confused he isn't distressed though. Will try oj.

Happy thanksgiving all Smile

I've got a question. My lo had his first jabs yesterday at 9weeks 3days. Apptm for next jabs was given on 7 January. That's 6 weeks from now. Do you think it's a problem to have it that late? It should be 4 weeks between the jabs but that's Christmas.
I was thinking to ask for earlier apptm the last week before Christmas, so it would be 3 weeks after first jabs. Anyone knows if it can be a week earlier? Would rather have it a bit earlier than later.

Not sure how important is the timing, don't want to neglect something.

velvetlilithi · 27/11/2014 13:17

TeamEponine I have a problem to socialize as well but also hate to be at home alone at the same time. I've wanted to be going to baby group since K was born but still don't have the courage to actually go. I'm afraid there will be mums who all know each other for a long time and not want to take anyone new, specially as I'm not originally from UK. Sad

FATEdestiny · 27/11/2014 13:28

Velvet, not exactly answering your question but I am in a similar situation.

DD had her first jabs on Monday. She was OK Monday and Tuesday but quite unsettled yesterday. Could be just a fluke, could be that the jabs have a 3 day delay for symptoms in DD.

Problem is second set of jabs is booked for Monday 22nd December. 3 days later is Christmas Day Hmm. I am very seriously considering changing her appointment to the week between Christmas and New Year.

RedToothBrush · 27/11/2014 14:42

velvet I was told after the first set of jabs that it MUST be at least four weeks after the first set for the second. It didn't matter when exactly after the first set, but there must be four weeks and if there wasn't when I got the appointment through to rebook it as there was a problem with their booking system sometimes and they didn't want me to turn up only to have to come back at a later date.

DS will be due his third set around Christmas so I'm anticipating a similar issue but I have to wait for the appointment date to come through.

DS has been much better on this set of vaccinations. He was quite pukey last time but has been much more settled this time bar the 'poo bath' he gave himself yesterday.

holls2000 · 27/11/2014 16:46

holls2000 · 27/11/2014 17:13

im wondering if it is teething. we shall see. xx

Nazly · 27/11/2014 17:31

A friend of mine -who is a dr- said it doesn't matter how many weeks between jabs so long as minimum is 4 weeks... Ds had a fever so the first two were 5 weeks apart

Honeybear30 · 27/11/2014 17:31

Was there an answer to the 40 minute sleep cycle question? I have the same problem. These day time naps are driving me mental. In the morning he'll go down for 40 mins (needs to be longer) but in the afternoon I can't get him to sleep in his cot, he naps in his bouncy chair. It's driving me mad! Any suggestions? I need him to sleep longer and upstairs.

holls2000 · 27/11/2014 17:56

doc no idea what's wrong. b is fine in himself. docs thermometer said no fever (damn my shit one), so he said give calpol and then put on e45.

Honeybear30 · 27/11/2014 18:01

Glad b is ok holls

FATEdestiny · 27/11/2014 18:05

Honey. Established daytime naps tend to come when babies are much older. I really wouldn't be worrying about having in-cot long sleeps just yet. Just get baby to sleep however possible. If bouncy chair works, why not let him nap in that? Just bounce him back to sleep when he wakes. For other people a sling/carrier works.
