what is this 'sleeping through' that people talk of and how do I achieve it?!?

KitKat1985 · 25/11/2014 04:56

Lol holls! I visited family at the weekend and they complained that their 18 month old sleeps so well (hardly ever wakes) that at the weekend he wasn't awake until nearly 10am one day (they were miffed as they wanted to go out)... I was sitting there thinking 'oh I wish'!!!!

jaykay34 · 25/11/2014 06:27

honey Had a bit of a breakthrough - although it's only been one day so hoping it's not a fluke. DS had his usual on/off nap in the pram when I took him for a walk in the morning. By 3pm he was having a screaming fit so I put him in his moses basket and put on some white noise (downloaded an app yesterday). Within a short tine he was asleep. He napped for about an hour and a half and then proceeded to have a much happier evening. Ok, he had a few few grizzles - but no prolonged screaming fits and he seemed happier. He went to bed fine at bedtime. Will definitely have to incorporate proper day time naps.

whiteblossom · 25/11/2014 07:40

jaykay, is that an app I can download onto my tablet (I ain't no techie Grin) whats it called?

ds fed last night at 7.15pm then slept until 3am when I then woke him up to feed as I was worried then he went straight back down and was up again at 6.30am which is fine by me! Though spent most of night worrying if I should wake him up to feed...arrgghhh even when he sleeps I don't!!

I finally got my periods back yesterday, its taken 3 months! I suspect exercise delayed it, Ive really tailed it off when I realised I just couldnt cope with lack of sleep on top and the weight wasn't coming off.

DS has been really difficult the last few days but I don't know why...wondering about buying a swing or a mamaroo...anyone got any ideas or recommendations?

Honeybear30 · 25/11/2014 08:12

jaykay that's great :) I hope I helped! Keep at it and let me know.

I have a white noise app to, it's called sound sleeper. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not.

I'm with holls on the sleeping through...nowhere near for us!

Nazly · 25/11/2014 09:05

I have sound sleeper too, but if you just search white noise baby you'll find something for your device - I totally recommend white noise, if you think it doesn't work for your baby think again!!! :) cause that was what I was thinking until a friend told me when he is crying, the sound should be loader than the cry so he can hear it. And booooooom! It is totally magical

I wonder when it stops working

Nazly · 25/11/2014 09:07

White why do you wake your baby for feed? I may remember wrong but didn't you say he is a good size for his age and isn't he around 3 months? I would never do that know, if he is hungry he will let me know!

holls2000 · 25/11/2014 09:28

aaaaah white noise. I love white noise. in fact I worry thay when b moves into his own room I will still need the sound of thr sea to get me to sleep!! I have sleepy sounds and sound sleeper and sleep bug on tablet and white noise baby on phone. I have noticed when it is raining hard tje sound of the rain on ojr conservatory roof sends b to sleep.

we had an ok nigjt. he jad 160ml at 6pm slept 7.30-12.15, had 110ml, slept till 3, did his usual wake at 5 so I did what health visitor suggested and gave him dummy. he went through till 6.40 and only whimpers were when dummy fell out!

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2014 09:45

White I was waking DS for a feed for a few nights as I was worried about food, but eventually left him too it. I think its hard to get out of that mindset actually. I think I was feeding him to relieve my anxiety rather than his hunger. Like Nazly says, he'll wake you if he's hungry.

DS woke at 4am this morning for divine retribution. He had slept most of the morning and the evening, and had hardly eaten anything all yesterday. He had an eventful day on Sunday so hadn't had any naps so I'm not entirely surprised.

He has his second lot of jabs today, and I really should get him weighed too today if I can as its just round the corner from the doctors. Neither of which I particularly fancy as I'm sure it'll set me off worrying and will upset him. Last time he was vomiting for about a week. I don't know if that was just his age or the vaccinations it was horrible. I'm not doing too well around other babies. I have no idea what to say to anyone and I'm a bit wary of saying something that might upset someone unintentionally. The internet is easier not to put your foot in it the same way!

FATEdestiny · 25/11/2014 12:15

11pm to 7pm sleep last night. Whoop Whoop!

Breastfed 8pm, dreamfed 5oz of expressed milk at 11pm. She was disturbed in her sleep from 5am (when my 5 year old decided to join us in bed Hmm) but the dummy kept her dozing.

Boobs felt like they were going to pop this morning! DD had a massive feed plus I expressed off 7oz, which is a massive amount for me even without the fact that I had just fed.

Honeybear30 · 25/11/2014 13:13

Fate that sounds like some good sleep and some good expressing!

Red unfortunately you just need to be brave to talk to other mummies. Maybe try chatting about your own baby? Then you can't really put your foot in it. Or ask questions about a problem you're having? Also an easy win is to compliment their child, cute clothes, nice smile etc.

FATEdestiny · 25/11/2014 13:57

DD has her second set of vaccinations booked for Mon 22nd December. Fingers doubly crossed that she doesn't have a reaction to them 3 days later Hmm

Nazly · 25/11/2014 16:10

Should I let ds to nap for hours during the day?

He just wants to sleep all the time today, doesn't want to be up and when he is up doesn't want to leave the boobs at all

I am thinking growth Spurt? He is 15 weeks today but corrected 11.5 weeks and I find corrected age works better for us in some areas

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2014 16:41

Well DS is 12 weeks. He's either sleeping or eating this week. I think he has grown over night as the baby grow he had on overnight was notably tighter this morning!!!

He was a little champ with his injections. And has promptly fallen asleep on me again as soon as we got in the house. It was much less stressful than last time actually.

cookielove · 25/11/2014 16:45

Eli still sleeps a lot during the day he is probably awake 4 out of 24 hrs. He is 15 weeks, but 9 corrected. He also has a stinking cold to boot so isn't feeling the best.

holls2000 · 25/11/2014 17:45

red thats what I needed to hear re injections! glad better this time.
b has been doing a lot of afternoon sleeping and general day sleeping since he went onto comfort milk. he is 9 weeks. xx

holls2000 · 25/11/2014 21:02

just out of interest does anyone still get weepy for no reason? I've just cried cos I feel lonely but it came out of nowhere and I generally feel fine but DH came home and went to gym (normal routine so not a change for me) and I felt really sad. so cried. and he clearly thinks I am bonkers. I then (cos I am bonkers) asked if he ever felt he should say that I am doing a good job and he looked at me . like I was even more bonkers. so I.stropped off to bed. in bonkers fashion.

*I'm not bonkers. well. maybe a bit.

Nazly · 25/11/2014 21:38

Holls - yes he should tell you how brilliant you are doing - the difficulty with bringing up a baby is that you may hardly get any recognition of how brilliant a job you are doing, and believe me, we all need to hear that from time to time whatever we do... I never knew before having a baby but it is one of the most difficult jobs of the world ; having a little one just relying on you for his life... If your OH does not tell you, take a moment, look at your baby, compare him with when he was first born and tell yourself well done for doing so brilliantly. That is what I do sometimes anyhow- I am very proud that I was able to meet all his needs and he is grown so beautifully and is growing and developing every day! You have been and are making a new human being. That is the most amazing and important thing somebody can do in her life and only we are capable of that...

holls2000 · 25/11/2014 21:44

nazly - Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile

FATEdestiny · 25/11/2014 21:54

Holls. You are doing a good job with your baby. You are doing a great job. Flowers

Nazly · 25/11/2014 23:01

Oh why did I watch the miracle babies - it reminded me of when ds was in intensive care, and I just can't control my emotions then... We have been really lucky, comparing with some of these cases and you ladies who were able to hold your baby every second since birth and come home with your babies shortly after birth are even luckier, don't ever forget that...

holls2000 · 25/11/2014 23:06

hugs nazly.

thanks fate. he has just woken himself up farting and whilst I was changing his nappy and talking to him about how he would be reminded of this when he was 16 and hates me, he gave me the most gorgeous smile. it makes all the worry go away. for a moment!

cookielove · 26/11/2014 08:48

Oh dear I cracked last night and slept him in his tummy as he would not sleep anywhere else! I spent the night constantly waking checking he is ok. And thinking we must set up the breathing pad today!

Eli was only "off" one day after his injections unfortunately he got a cold two days later and that sent him into a spin but we seem to be coming out of it now fx! A couple more days of antibiotics and he'll be back to my cuddly lovely little man.

Also he almost rolled over last night kinda glad he didn't cause it would have given him a fright and he was "sleeping"

nazly I watched last week's miracle babies (sobathon) Eli was released from hospital 10 days after his birth that felt like forever!

holls are you getting out and about? I find when I am stuck in with lo I go crazy and just getting out makes us all feel much better!

cookielove · 26/11/2014 08:49

Oh and I went to my bumps and babies clas yesterday and there was an 8 day old baby awww!
