What's the deal with threads being closed? Is there a post limit?

I am soooooo tired today. Archie has been really unsettled the last few nights from about 4am onwards. Sometimes he's hungry, sometimes he wants to play, sometimes he wants his dummy. The last two nights he's ended up in with us as it's easier to replug the dummy, pat etc.
YAWN.

Scratching took a week and a half maybe, but the wind was better after a week and her eczema/general spottiness was about the same. The nappies are still terrible though, although she's in the middle of a nasty cold so it is difficult to know what's causing it. Her refluxing is still going on, but I think it is getting a bit better. Hard to tell, poor thing. Not looking forward to weaning. HV says I'll have to use Nutramigen if I can't express (which I currently can't as she feeds 1-2 hourly) which is depressing as I've tried so hard to avoid formula, let alone bloody elemental stuff!

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 18:13

What's Nutramigen?

TarkaTheOtter · 26/05/2014 18:19

book could you just wean non-dairy and not give any formula? Or would that miss key nutrients?

flyawayblue · 26/05/2014 18:44

book we're looking to use neocate which is even more non-milk than nutramigen. Would you be able to wean to fruit and veg at the beginning and then milky things once you can express if the feeds become more spread out? Do you have a dietician, I'm going to be asking them loads of weaning questions when I see them in a few weeks.

BookTart · 26/05/2014 19:59

He HV has referred us to a dietician fly, but I haven't heard anything about an appointment yet.

If it is possible to just wean without dairy then that would be ideal tarka, I'm going to a weaning workshop next week so hopefully they will be able to help me with how to go about it.

toby Nutramigen and neonate are formulas (formulae? Probably not Grin) that have no dairy in them. They are basically not actually milk at all. I can't use soy, rice or most coconut milk as they aren't suitable for babies either. I've got a bit of time before I need to worry about this though. Are you going to SMG tomorrow?

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 20:06

Ah. I see!

Yes, I was going to text you re SMG. Lovely lovely G is running it tomorrow :o

Weaning lactose intolerant babies sounds Hard!

Pidgy · 26/05/2014 20:07

book, what fly said makes sense to me. You do y need to mix molk with things like carrot, parsnip, butternut squash etc.
They sometimes suggest baby rice with milk but it's still pretty foul IMO and DS wasn't overly impressed.
You should be able to express once she's eating solids as she'll hopefully take less milk.

You could also try baby led weaning so that doesn't need milk.

What is it about sleep at the moment. I'm exhausted and just hoping tonight is a good night. Got my coil fitting tomorrow and things seem worse when you're tired.

This time 2 years ago I was fat, bothered and very pregnant with DS. I decided to have a Hoegarden as was so fed up and voila, labour started the next morning! Obviously, down to the Hoegarden!
Can't believe my baby is two tomorrow!!!

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 20:27

Why do you need to express when you start weaning? To mix with the food or for another reason? Have I forgotten something very important?

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 20:28

Happy birthday, LittlePidgy!

TarkaTheOtter · 26/05/2014 20:35

toby I think you only have to if you can't give cows milk with food because of allergies.

TarkaTheOtter · 26/05/2014 20:36

Sorry I mean in food more than with food.

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 20:43

What food do you mix milk with (other than the dreaded baby rice!)?
I have forgotten more than I ever knew about babies Blush. But I don't think I ever mixed milk with food for my other 2. Unless I was making something with a cheese/white sauce, I suppose. But I was lucky enough not to have to worry about lactose. It must be a total PITA. Those of you dealing with it have my complete sympathy!

TarkaTheOtter · 26/05/2014 20:54

Porridge? I can't really remember either.

I expect the hv was talking about baby rice though.

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 21:09

Ah, yes. I must have given them porridge at some point! I've never actually seen baby rice but I always envision it being like rice pudding.

Pidgy · 26/05/2014 21:21

Think more like wall paper paste and you're on the right track. Waste of time.

I just used milk with baby rice, porridge and white sauce. Oh, and maybe potatoe? Most things don't need it.
Too many typos above (again!). Sorry! It was meant to say
'You don't need to mix milk with ...'

Thanks for the birthday wishes!

flyawayblue · 26/05/2014 21:21

I'm not going to be mixing foods for quite a bit as doctor suggested trying one thing only for 3 to 4 days to see if she has any reaction. So A will be having plain sweet potato, carrot etc for quite a while. There are some great recipes online for weaning cows milk allergy babies. Allergy UK is great for that and also has a brilliant, if terrifying, list of mislabelled products.

www.allergyuk.org/specific-food-alerts/milk-alerts/

So you can check your free from biscuits are actually safe.

I've been living off bonbons, oreos, hobnobs and ginger nuts :) oh and found a lovely fake Nutella in sainsbury.

TobyLerone · 26/05/2014 21:42

Wallpaper paste? Boak!

I have always tried not to feed my DC anything I wouldn't eat myself (for the most part, at least. I'm certain the odd emergency jar was brought into play, and as for some of the stuff they choose to eat now...ugh!). I have eaten many delicious tins of Heinz Pure Fruit as an adult, though :o

FelixFelix · 26/05/2014 23:27

I've not mixed milk with anything I've made for Sylvie so far, apart from with a bit of baby rice to mix in to some apple purée as it was so sour. I didn't realise until she had eaten half of it with a screwed up face Grin

I've also been giving her some water in a sippy cup. I'm not sure if this is right? She's only been having a bit as I've noticed her poos are a lot more solid since I started weaning her.

This whole weaning thing is very confusing!

enormouse · 26/05/2014 23:32

Can't believe the littlies are starting weaning already! I've missed so much with bloody end of year exams/essays. Just submitted my last thing today so thats it for me till August.

Going to go back through the thread and see what's been going on. Smile

AMillionNameChangesLater · 27/05/2014 08:42

Yey enormouse

Henry has milk mixed into everything, on dietician's say so. So a scoop of formula to everything. Pretty sure it's making him constipated, so need to tell her and we'll get prescription forumla.

Today is my last day off before going back to work full time tomorrow. I bought new clothes several sizes smaller than i was before mat leave, and i left the changing room feeling quite happy!

Gettingthroughthis · 27/05/2014 09:26

Yeay million

felix I read you should start giving water in a sippy cup with no valve or a beaker once weaning

Henry's 17w next week so I think I'll start weaning. Was planning to wait until 6 months but he's showing all the signs of being ready (and has enjoyed the tastes of food I've sneakily given him so far)

Gettingthroughthis · 27/05/2014 09:27

Also yeay enormouse

FelixFelix · 27/05/2014 17:39

Yay enormouse and million!

Do some of you write a blog or did I totally imagine it? I started one a couple of weeks ago and would like to read others Grin

Spged · 27/05/2014 18:08

Well done enormouse and good luck million!

Stuck with a sleeping baby on top of me eating choc digestives. Need to stop!!

Swannykazoo · 27/05/2014 18:11

Yay for the clothes million and good luck for work tomorrow.
Ihave made a beginners weaning error trying some apple puree without a bib I'm enjoying the lost puree now
