Afternoon even Pidg Wink

Sophiathesnowfairy · 02/04/2014 13:05

Well initially DH thought I had put them in the valleys rather than the pointy bits but he was wrong. He thinks I am funny and will laugh on the other side of his face when everyone comes to admire my veg patch!

Sophiathesnowfairy · 02/04/2014 13:05

How'd it go pp ?

StuntNun · 02/04/2014 13:23

What do the dairy-free crowd think of Aptamil Pepti? When J went on it last week there seemed to be an initial improvement in his sleep/clinginess but the last two nights have been horrendous to the point of me dragging his entire cot into my bedroom last night in the vain hope that he would sleep better in the same room as me. I don't know if he just hates his cot but whenever he wakes up in there then he immediately stands up and starts crying. So I was thinking about giving him Koko milk instead of Pepti tonight to see whether that makes a difference. It doesn't help that I got a letter from the hospital today saying that they will notify me six weeks before his paediatrician appointment. Shock At this point I'm not going to make it through the next six days let alone at least another six weeks.

Stunt I know that it's great for some babies whose CMPI is fairly mild as it's just a hydrolised dairy based formula. It has lactose added to it too to make it taste better but if there is any secondary lactose intolerance going on (common with CMPI and tummy bugs) that would be a problem. But Jonas can't tolerate any dairy based formula even the super dooper hydrolised ones as even the teeny tiny broken down proteins still affect him. But he is on the extreme end of the scale. Did your J react ok? Or was it horrific? I've known pals with babies who have had good and bad reactions to it. Didn't Det's Oscar try it initially before moving to Nutramigen?

We have moved full time onto koko. He has two cartons a day (one strawberry and one chocolate - not ideal but meh he needs fattening up!) and no longer wants a feed at bedtime as he has stories, a sippy of water and cuddles with Daddy instead.

I'm so sorry you have to wait for your appointment Sad if it comes to it, just pitch up and A&E and try to speed up the process xxx

YellowWellies · 02/04/2014 13:37

I'm sure Det's Oscar improved initially on Pepti junior but then his symptoms returned with a vengeance. It seems to be quite a common reaction.... I'd guess he'd be better off with nutramigen or koko. I can't get Jonas to take nutramigen for love nor money now and after extended BF I think your J might be the same. They are used to sweet and yummy milk not a formula that smells of liquidised McDonald's fries. A wee carton of koko contains their half entire daily calcium and vit D needs I believe, I top him up with osteocare calcium and vit D liquid and whatever else he gets from his diet.

PurplePidjin · 02/04/2014 13:58

i did my best. if i haven't had a call by tomorrow i didn't get it

StuntNun · 02/04/2014 14:36

Yeah YW I'm thinking we've been sold a dud with the Pepti. The problem is we don't actually know the cause of J's distress, it's all just guesswork. If it's CMPI, whether primary or secondary, then the Pepti might help or it might not. We already know J reacts to egg in bm so if he's equally sensitive to cows milk protein then the Pepti won't necessarily help that much. On the other hand if it's secondary lactose intolerance due to his illness on February then the Pepti won't help that either has it still has about half the lactose of regular formula. I haven't cut out soy either as he's still eating bread. The precautionary principle would dictate to cut anything that could cause a problem, i.e. all egg, dairy, soy and lactose sources.

F was one pepti first of all and I thought it was helping but then his symptoms seemed to come back so we moved him onto Neocate and within days his symptoms had disappeared.
But I had heard we were the minority and most babies respond fine to pepti.

YellowWellies · 02/04/2014 14:46

Stunt they do seem to grow out of soy intolerances quickest. Well in my family's experience anyway. Jonas can tolerate it fine in bread now - I'd not give him soy milk or cheese as I suspect that would be too much for him to take. Soy goes hand in hand with CMPI in 50% of cases but it seems to more usually result in sleeplessness rather than gastric distress? I'm also not sure how long secondary lactose intolerance takes to resolve itself after a tummy bug. I know it can linger a long time. If it were me I think I'd be minded to keep excluding dairy, egg and lactose and to keep cooked soy traces (bread etc) in his diet and see how he gets on. I'd switch him to koko too. Fingers crossed that combination brings you some well deserved sleep and a more comfy tum for J.

I fcking hate the fcking guesswork / cluedo minefield that is CMPI and trying to figure out what they are reacting to. I think Pepti is certainly only suitable for the mildest cases and if J can detect the proteins in BM then he would react to it in Pepti too. I'm so sorry you are going through this. This was us in January last year - it is such a PITA and trying to think rationally about what to exclude and what to try when you have a screaming sleep dodger is just horrible. And having folks around you going Hmm 'have you tried just letting him cry it out?' and making you feel like a freak for having a child with food allergies made me want to get very fighty.

I don't really know what to suggest other than Brew for you.

I let J try some of my cereal that had dairy traces in yesterday. I didn't tell Daddy. He had Daddy up twice in the night and will now only be consoled at night by DH. Best not do that again! Blush

StuntNun · 02/04/2014 15:00

I took J to Subway yesterday and asked the staff to change their gloves before making his ham sandwich. Maybe not a roar but definitely a miaow.

I noticed an improvement when I swapped all of Js formulas. Initially he was bf until 5.5 months, then ordinary formula as the fuckers insisted I try. Ok for a couple of days then boom. Then we had LF, ok for a couple of weeks then boom. Then Nutrimigen and much better. I was still giving soya though, and he was on inadequate meds for his reflux. His skin was still shocking, as was his sleep, but way better than he was. He was around 10 months by the time we got it right.

I doubt he will take Nutrimigen at this stage, and doesn't need it if he gets bits and bobs elsewhere as YW says.

ValiumQueen · 02/04/2014 16:26

He is much better today so hopefully back to nursery Friday. I will go back to work Friday too and take it a day at a time.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 02/04/2014 17:15

YellowWellies · 02/04/2014 18:39

Corned beef hash here with a pud of pom bears, grapes, apple and strawberries for the bear. And cherry and mascarpone ice cream for the adults.

Jonas just burst a balloon for the first time; his response 'oh... all gone' more stoic than his Dad! And then he just waterboarded himself on a third of my pint glass of squash - he was a bit shocked and damp from that!

PurplePidjin · 02/04/2014 18:47

Shepherd's pie here. And lots of WineSad

The lip tie thingy is all torn and hanging down and the gum round one her teeth is all bruised. First proper hurty fall - not bad going considering.
