Stom- what a stupid system at your Drs! And your poor baby, hope you can get it sorted soon.

Mogz - oh no! Are you going to have to stop the fenugreek (sp?) then? Guess it's not worth it if it makes her that sick??

13loki · 17/01/2014 18:05

Stom I just discovered our busses do have a pushchair spot. I never noticed it before, and we have coaches as we are so rural. But I just put Älfi in a sling to go into town.

I am going to start mother and baby Swedish for idiots immigrants soon. I just need to fix my car (the parking brake cable snapped at the start of winter) and then I will be able to get into town in time for the lessons to start.

No mother and baby groups in our town, but then it is a very small village.

I'm really confused as to how you make formula bottles when out.
I was told to boil the kettle etc them put the water in the bottles and then put the formula in a little container which I get but then when your out the water would have gone cold so then when you add the formula the water isn't going to be hot enough to kill the bacteria if that makes sense?

So im not sure what to do or how to do it

So I'm not the only one with a colicky baby in the evenings- good to know it's just a phase- Joshua seems to guzzle a lot of milk in this time but not sure if we're mistaking his crying as hunger and it's just tiredness/fussiness. My auntie came round today and after a feed he was crying and she said (with a pitying look) oh, is he not getting enough milk? She formula fed hers and I know she's a bit suspicious of this breastfeeding lark- how to make me feel bad! I was left wondering is she right??...

Anyway- stom as long as the water has been boiled it's fine to add the powder to it when it's cooled. You can then sit the bottle in a bowl or jug/cup of hot water to warm it a bit before feeding (I used to ask for a takeaway coffee cup with hot water if in places like Costa etc). As long as bottles have been sterilised and water boiled there won't be any bacteria lurking that you need to worry about.

mumofthreeboysS · 17/01/2014 21:29

This may be frowned upon by midwives/hv's but I used to boil water, fill up say 5-6 bottles (enough for the day)then put them In the fridge. Then I'd just take one out when needed, add formula then heat briefly in the microwave, shake for 30 sec to make sure there are no hotspots and done. My sis in law told me about this way and my DS's we're never ill. It just saved the hassle of boiling and doing each bottle at a time- ESP when baby is crying for a feed and you have to wait for the bottle to cool!

Mogz · 17/01/2014 22:04

stom easiest thing to do when out is grab those ready made cartons, they're a godsend.

Rach yes, as of today I've cut out the supplements and I'm dumping my expressed milk for 24 hours. Had a huge sob about that as it feels like a huge amount if effort and waste. Hopefully tomorrow my system will be clear and I can go back to feeding her my milk.

Stom91 · 18/01/2014 00:13

Yeh I would but they get expensive. At home we make the bottles and put then in the forge and heat as and when we want them it was just when put and about really confused me. lol

stom could you do a thermos of hot water to make up the bottles while out? because you won't be carrying enough there can be bacteria in the formula
mogz whoever said there's no point crying over spilt milk obviously never expressed.

mumofthreeboysS · 18/01/2014 08:45

Just wondering has anyone had thrush whilst bf yet? I was just getting out of the period of painful bf and now it's suddenly got worse. I don't know if it's thrush but I have a burning pain in my nips (during and after feeding). And if course it's the weekend so I can't go to the docs Sad

I've read that me and Joshua will need treating if it is.

mumofthreeboysS · 18/01/2014 08:49

stom as 13loki says I used to take a thermos of hot boiled water then put powder in when you're out- you can get containers that hold 3 portions of powdered formula so it's pre measured.

froubylou · 18/01/2014 08:59

Mum I have wondeted about thrudh a couple of times. But it has passed by the time I have thought seriously about docs. I think sometimes it can be a dodgy latch during one feed. Or if I get engorged it can make my nipples sore.

Had a mammoth feeding session yesterday again. Sigh. He just wouldn't go down. Am starting to suspect he reacts to Chinese food. Its the third time we have had a bad day the day after we have had a Chinese takeaway. Hopefully today will be better. Got so much to do.

Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 09:26

stom what bottles are you using?
I had tommee tippee ones and they also make these beakers that hold approx 7 scoops of powder too and after you've put the water in the bottle you put the filled container inside the bottle, they're great and a space/hassle saver.

mumofthreeboysS · 18/01/2014 10:28

Yeah frouby it's so hArd to tell. I've read up on it and it says pain after not having pain previously but since I've only been bf a few weeks I haven't got past the new-to-bf pain so it's hard to know. Tho this pain is a more burning pain rather than bruising I've had from a bad latch. I guess I'll see if it's still bad on Monday, I'll go to the docs.

Interesting re the Chinese- it could be unsettling him- but how annoying. We've just got past the food restrictions of pregnancy and now this! I'm not sure if coffee is affecting Joshua. I had a mug of coffee then a tea the other day and he wouldn't sleep at all after his feed. I LOVE my coffee and have been waiting 9 months to drink more so I hope it's not affecting him!

Pistachiotruffle · 18/01/2014 11:50

Aah, so this is where you're all hiding!

Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 17:45

Just had to go get the strongest painkillers boots sold.... My shoulder/back/neck are still hurting after my 48 hour hold the baby marathon Sad
But thanks to panadol I'm fine at the minute Grin

Also stom might be frowned upon but I used to give my kids the bottle at room temp when out if I had no way of warming it but the water was boiled when I made the bottles in the beginning though.

Stom91 · 18/01/2014 19:21

I'm using Tommee tippee I've got the little container things. I'm just worried about the bacteria in the formal as people always saying when making bottle it has to be over 70c to kill any Bactria so it's like when your out the water would have cooled and won't be 70c therefore not killing the bacteria? I that makes sense

OP posts:
Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 19:24

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think so stom as the bacteria was killed when you boiled the water the first time.
Wasn't there a contraption thing on dragons den ages ago where a man invented this thermos bottle thing to make bottles when out?
But I've always just done it my way and they are all fine....noisy but fine lol Grin

Mogz · 18/01/2014 19:32

The bacteria is present in the formula not the water. So yes, you need to be making it up with hot water from a thermos, or asking for a cup of hot water from a coffee shop in order to kill it.
It's only a chance that it is in there, which is why lots of people get away with all the differing ways of making up bottles, but if you want to eliminate the risk the safest way to prepare is as per the manufacturer's instructions.
Hth

Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 20:17

Ah never knew that mogz

froubylou · 18/01/2014 21:45

Do you know what I don't get? That you have to sterilise everything and be careful how you make formula up and store it. But when you bf you just shove a nipple in a gob?

I bath or shower every day don't get me wrong. And have a clean bra every day. But I am using lanisoh which I imagine is a good breeding ground for bugs. But still it's just a shove in and go jobby!

If it wasn't for all the faffing I'd have started expressibg by now but really cba.

Got dp snoring on one side and seb snoring the other. Bless lol.

Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 22:02

My mum always says that in her day they never had any of these posh cleaning sprays or sterilises and they were hardlys ever ill, it's as soon as we started trying to kill off all the germs people became ill off them as our bodies were not used to them.

13loki · 18/01/2014 22:48

Breast milk has antibacterial properties, so will destroy bacteria on the breast/nipple.

Alyssa1978 · 18/01/2014 23:22

Omg! Just done 20 minutes of Zumba and I'm knackered, how unfit am I?
Get weighed Monday night at slimming world and even though I've stuck to programme and not cheated I'm bricking it

Stom91 · 19/01/2014 02:53

Yea. Dp keep saying they need some herbs in their life else how are they going to become immune to them. If we keep everyone so clean then when they come into contact with bug they will find it hard to fight them if that makes sense x

Stom great mental images of babies fighting giant herbs. I hear Dill is one feisty bugger! Grin
Almost got through 24 hours without a vomiting incident but right at the last moment up came the last feed of the day. Feel so sorry for my poor wee girl. Thankfully she settled after a couple of hours and slept through until about 4, DH just trying to put her back down now.
