Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Soooo, at 13wks dd has been diagnosed with reflux :-( Her weight has been dropping as well as the constant sickiness and pain. So we've come home with a bag of infant gaviscon to add to her feeds. Hope it works! Really annoyed that the doc at her 8wk check just shrugged of my concerns then tho! She could be back on track with her weight by now and we could've missed weeks of despair Angry
She also has excema along her jawline and neck that is spreading onto her chest now, which isn't helped by her neckline being constantly wet with sick and also dribble now the little chewer!

shentok · 26/11/2013 21:31

hi purple, my ds was diagnosed with reflux and doc gave us gaviscon and within 24 hours he was suffering with constipation, he is now on an anti reflux milk called enfamil a.r (from doctor) which is a god send. my first son was on it and its worked a treat for both of them. with the gaviscon or any pre thickened milk (if u have to go down that route) its worth getting a veriflow teat for the bottle as baby may get angry if the flow has slowed right down. x

PurpleDana · 27/11/2013 17:13

Thanks for the advice shentok. She seems to be ok on the size 2 teats at the mo. Will keep an eye out for the constipation but so far she is fine.
Been told to give the gaviscon for a month, if not much improvement then double the dose. Obviously if her weight gets more concerning then we will have to rethink things.
Anyone any experience of aqueous cream? Directions are 'as required' but how do I know if I'm applying it too muck or too little? If it was for myself I would go on how the skin feels to the touch, how it looks, but also very much on whether it feels tight if u know what I mean. Dd obviously can't tell me that and she never seems to itch it so I can't watch for that. I'm thinking maybe twice a day to start with but more if it looks particularly dry or angry.

Ditsy79 · 27/11/2013 20:54

purpledana you can't really overdo aqueous cream - just apply it as often as you think your baby needs it. You can also use it as a soasp substitute in the bath - wet baby's skin with water, rub some cream in (it won't foam) and rinse off. Should leave baby's skin feeling nice and soft.

PurpleDana · 10/12/2013 09:23

2 weeks in and no improvement with the reflux Sad all it has done is make the vomit a bit thicker so easier to clean up! The eczema is so much worse Sad Sad Aqueous cream is now in the bin! It irritated her skin even more, it became red raw! Then I read an article where the NICE guidance actually said not to prescribe aqueous cream for eczema in children as it's a skin irritant! Furious!
So, off I stomp back to the doctors, see someone different, and come back with different cream & a course of antibiotics for her skin, and an appt next week to review and discuss testing for allergies - possibility of cows milk allergy.

sparkle101 · 10/12/2013 16:55

Hi purpledana

Reflux sucks completely! Dd had it and was diagnosed at day six, we were prescribed nutramigen aa milk and ranitidine and she was like a new child so if gaviscon doesn't work maybe see if they can change to ranitidine? Dd also suffered with excema early on, she had a hydrocortisone cream to use for a few weeks and then onto diprobase/double base which worked really well too.

Thankfully ds is showing no signs of reflux but I remember it so well. Good luck, it will pass!

PurpleDana · 15/12/2013 12:03

It just seems such a slow process to get it sorted. It's all try this try that, come back in a week, come back in a month. Meanwhile poor dd is suffering. Her eczema is just horribly sore and itchy and spreading fast. It's horrible. Even if we do get tested for milk allergy I bet that takes a while (anybody know?) Then I'm sure there won't be an overnight difference with new milk or whatever. Sad
Oh well. See what happens back at the docs tomoro...

Ditsy79 · 16/12/2013 06:44

Good luck at the docs today, purple. Hope they sort something out for your DD's eczema, poor little thing. If her skin is still infected, the doc may be best giving an emollient (moisturiser) with an antimicrobial - example would be Dermol, which you can get in a cream or lotion, as well as a bath oil. Once the infection has cleared up, Double base would be a good option, as it doesn't contain fragrances or irritants.
If the skin is not broken, a mild steroid cream could be used until the flare-up has calmed down.
Is your DD scratching the eczema and making it worse? You could try scratch mitts or socks on her hands, or scratch sleeves, which she won't be able to get off.

Hope you get it sorted ASAP

PurpleDana · 16/12/2013 12:50

Thanks ditsy :-)
Doc has done an urgent referral to the dermatologist and we are having a test for lactose intolerance. She was pleased that we have managed to take the rawness out of dd's eczema with the hydrobase cream and antibiotics, but not happy about how it Is still very present and spreading. So we are continuing antibiotics and have a steroid cream to use sparingly.
Hopefully the poo sample results will be back in 5 days so we can rule out / cater for any milk allergy. I feel so awful giving her a bottle knowing that I may just be harming her, so will be a weight off my mind when those results are back

PurpleDana · 16/12/2013 12:52

Oh and yeah she is starting to rub her face and ear bless her

PurpleDana · 16/12/2013 13:05

Doh not hydrobase, it's zerobase!! Lol

InternationalMuslinMountain · 19/12/2013 22:15

Haven't been on here for ages. Hello everyone.

Purple I have been reading your updates about your little one. Sounds like you are both having a tough time HmmFrom what you describe it sounds like it could be cows milk protein allergy, which is different to lactose intolerance (which is actually incredibly rare, unless you're Scandinavian). Cows milk protein allergy on the other hand is more common and can cause eczema and reflux type symptoms. Other symptoms include poor weight gain and loose watery stools but not all babies have all the symptoms IYSWIM.

Treatment for cows milk protein allergy is avoidance of the allergen, so dairy free diet for mums if breastfeeding or special prescription formula if formula feeding. Someone mentioned nutramigen - this is one of the prescription formulas. Afraid I haven't read closely enough to see which applies to you. Has anyone mentioned this as a possibility before? If not it might be worth discussing it with your GP as the improvement is usually rapid (days).

I speak as a health care professional within paediatrics so have seen a fair few little people with this type of problem.

Hope you find this useful and its not like I'm butting in unannounced but I couldn't read your posts and not offer some advice Smile hope you have it all sorted soon.

PurpleDana · 20/12/2013 11:04

Thanks mountain. I actually told the 2nd gp I was concerned it could be cmpa but he dismissed it quickly Angry It has been the 3rd doctor who has always referred to it as lactose intolerance. Whether allergy or intolerance, milk or lactose, I don't care, I just want to know so we can help her! Found out her results are back while I was at the surgery for her jabs, but they need looking at by gp first so I gotta call back this afternoon :-/ Nervous now

PurpleDana · 20/12/2013 16:09

Results are normal, not lactose intolerant. On the one hand it's good news, on the other hand I feel like it's back to square one :-(

PurpleDana · 21/12/2013 11:14

Had a chat with hubby and we are gonna try her on infasoy (one option HV listed last week), we will then have a good couple of weeks evidence on a different diet to take to next gp appt in January. Dermatologist not til feb so either even better chunk of evidence on soy or whatever gp suggests (if anything).

PurpleDana · 26/12/2013 22:56

Happy first Xmas little August babies and mummies :-)
Hope u all having a fab time making some very special memories.
Love Dana and Poppy x

Ditsy79 · 27/12/2013 18:50

Hope you are all having a good first Christmas with your babies. Ours started off badly - we're visiting family and DD wouldn't sleep in the travel cot on xmas eve, meaning DH and I were both exhausted on xmas day! Managed to sort the problem now though by putting a folded summer duvel under the travel cot mattress.
How's your DD getting on with Infasoy purple? Hope her eczema is improving.

PurpleDana · 27/12/2013 22:39

Not sure there is much difference to be honest ditsy. Defo no worse than on normal formula tho. :-/
We are managing her eczema with mammoth creaming 3 times a day, steroid cream sparingly if particularly red, and no soap/bath wash/fabric softener etc. She actually didn't seem to mind being smothered in cream to start with, unless she was really sore, but now she has lost all patience with it so it's becoming a bit of a battle. Actually the eczema hasn't particularly flared up since being on infasoy, just stayed the same. Still horribly dry/flakey/itchy/red, poor thing. It's unsightly too. Just looking forward to seeing some improvement, keep telling myself we will in a few weeks...

Gonnabmummy · 17/01/2014 07:12

Hi guys hope everyone is well havnt been on since ds was born.
He'll be 19week on Monday just wondering if anyone is ebf still? If so how's your LO sleeping JJ wakes up about every 90-110 mins doesn't quite make two hours and it's killing me :/

NoisyBrain · 18/01/2014 05:50

My ds is 20 weeks today ( where has the time gone?!). We've been in the grip of the 4-month sleep regression for 2 weeks now, and my insomnia has come back so I've just laid awake for the whole hour and a half my DS spent asleep between his last two feeds :-( On the plus side, he started rolling over from his back to his side yesterday and he gets cuter every day.

I'd love to hear from any other insomniacs, misery loves company!

BobaFetaCheese · 21/01/2014 10:27

Keep on losing this thread!

Noisy, no insomnia here but you have my sympathies..hope you both start sleeping better soon!

Purple, how's she going now? Has the eczema calmed down? (sent you a pm btw).

DS is, mostly, sleeping thorough the night but DS1 (2yr) has started waking up earlier and earlier, he's gone from 7am to 5am wakeups. Not great!

at any lurkers.

wheresthelight · 16/05/2014 16:10

only just found this so hoping no one mind if i join in late!! DD was born in aug 2013 and is 9 months old today...where the hell has the time gone??

Trooperslane · 22/06/2014 08:59

Anyone else still around?

SnoozyGiraffe · 08/07/2014 21:11

Another attempt to resuscitate this thread...!

Hi everyone Grin I'm a bit late to the party since our babes are nearly one. Are you all too busy wrestling children to chat now?

Trooperslane · 17/07/2014 08:51

I can't believe they're nearly 1 :(

My baby isn't a baby anymore.

DH will take a lot of convincing to try for no 2 though!

How is your dc, Snoozy?

Dd has decided to wake up 4 times a night the last 3 nights FFS.
