Ds feeding habits point towards tongue tie. Confused

peardrop2 · 31/07/2013 16:32

So for those who're interested in my crazy tests. Avent failed miserably but NUK latex showed the most interest but its a no for both Sad I guess we can try NUK again in a few weeks but I have little hope!

peardrop2 · 31/07/2013 16:41

I'm annoyed that DH heated all the milk :-( We could have tried again tomorrow! Men Wink

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 17:03

Oh pear Sad

agnu you've made my mind up, I'm going to push to get his lip-tie cut, and investigated for tongue tie. He's been a fussy feeder all day today. And to be honest, he has for a while. his poor latch might not be hurting me nipples of steal but it is frustrating for me and him.
HV receptionist asked if he lifts his tongue up when he cries. It's unbelievably hard to explain to someone that he doesn't actually open his mouth when he cries, and that he doesn't actually cry that often.

AGnu · 31/07/2013 17:48

Glad I could help! Smile DS2 has been fussy today too so I've been expressing but I've discovered that my supply is definitely dwindling - I have to express from both sides to get the 4.5oz he should be getting for his weight & then I feel empty. He never leaves me feeling empty even from one breast so I struggle to believe he's getting enough! Sad

Just had an awful half hour. I had it in my head that I'd get the lasagna sorted ready to go in the oven while DS1 was sleeping but my mum rang & we chatted for longer than intended. This meant I was trying to settle a fussy baby while making a cheese sauce all while DS1 was supposed to be getting up. Eventually DS2 fell asleep so I ran up to get DS1 who then proceeded to make a lot of noise & wake DS2. By this point it was nearly time for his next feed & I suddenly realised I'd forgotten to get the milk I was planning to feed him out of the freezer! I had to sit it in hot water, try to teach DS2 patience while desperately trying to convince the sauce to thicken!

I have a headache!

All the time I was feeding DS2, DS1 was wandering around the living room shouting "fock"... While I kinda agreed with the sentiment at that moment, I had no idea where he would've heard language like that! Eventually I realised he was trying out the new word he learnt this morning - frog! It's been corrected now! I'm just glad he didn't wait until next week. We're spending a few days at my parents house & my DGM would not have found it amusing!

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 18:01

Good choice of new word. We have a tic toc cock, Blush

What a day agnu i think you deserve Wine and Brew

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 18:47

Agnu do you or DH have tongue tie? My DH has it! Right down to the v shape at the end of the tongue.

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 19:23

agnu* according to this site, ds definately has a posterior tongue tie.

peardrop2 · 31/07/2013 19:37

Apparently it is genetic Frus Hmm

AGnu · 31/07/2013 20:25

DH definitely had a lip tie & so probably does have tongue tie too. I suspect I might do but have no idea what is normal! Can't say I make a habit of peering inside other people's mouths to figure it out! Grin

I'm sore & still bruised despite having expressed every feed today. Fed up now. I'm on the verge of resorting to formula but it's soooo not what I want to do & would completely scupper my hopes of donating to the milk bank, not that I've got anything to donate right now! Sad

kittykatsforever · 31/07/2013 20:34

Oh Agnu that did make me laugh, we have boobies ( that is blue berrys)
They are hard work these kids arnt they!
Pear, have you tried not heating the milk or just a few seconds, after Agnu and frus telling me that dd does seem to take it better ( still not loved but better) she took a whole bottle (well 3oz) yesterday when we have it her at 4 instead if bedtime, I think she like the comfort to go to sleep when she's tired but was ok when it was in her awake time

peardrop2 · 31/07/2013 21:34

Kitty ~ yes we heated the milk. The NUK bottle has a medium flow. I think it's coming out too fast. I don't know why the stage 1 bottle comes with a medium flow teat. Surely it should come with a slow one?! I think this is the problem! I've ordered the NUK dummie to see if he prefers the material. Silicone is a definite no no!

kittykatsforever · 31/07/2013 21:53

I mean tried not to pear, we had been but I'm not sure she liked it, I think out milk is probably only room temp so warm puts them off?! Only a theory fickle buggars but dd definatly doesn't like it too warm, now I just do 10secs in the microwave from the fridge to take the chil out and that's it, good luck with the dummy, I hope you get to sell all these bottles on you poor thing x

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 22:02

ds is having a decent feed at last.
agnu are any positions better than others? Ds has only been feeding rugbyball style today.

AGnu · 31/07/2013 22:34

DS1 has always been really careful about the way he says clock - "clllllllllock"! Grin

Frus I find that the standard across the body position works best for us but I think changing the position just changes the bit he bruises! He had a couple of good feeds after my last bout of expressing all day so I'm hoping he'll be better tomorrow. I think the bottle is just a bit wider/harder than my nipple so he gets used to opening his mouth wider. After 2 feeds we were back to chomping though so it's not a long term solution!

FrussoHathor · 31/07/2013 22:40

Is it round the bottom of your nipple that bruises? Are you still slapping lansinoh on them?

AGnu · 31/07/2013 23:16

I've not been using lansinoh - didn't realise that would help... Not entirely sure why I didn't think of that! Confused Yes, around the bottom... & the top & the sides! Left breast is much worse than right but both are currently so bruised that you can't see the edge of the areola. It's just all purple from the edge of the nipples right out to a few millimeters into the normal skin! Poor little old me! Sad

We will get it sorted & we will be able to breastfeed comfortably. Watch out anyone who tries to stop me... When it comes to my calf, this gnu has horns! Grin

FrussoHathor · 01/08/2013 02:35

Oh my agnu that is some serious bruising. Eek.
i get the odd sore patch around the bottom of the nipple and the lansinoh seems to help. Lanolin is amazing stuff; other nipple creams just don't do it. It really is worth the money.

i get a large amount, say about an inch from the tube, warm it up between thumb and fingers until its not holding the shape of the tube, then I slop it on, gently work it in/on, and use more if you need.

The temptation is to use it sparingly, ignore that temptation. It feels much better if youre well and truly covered. And so it doesnt all rub of on your bra. I use enough so that if they feel sore in my bra, I can just rub the patch and and it's covered again.

Ds doesn't like the feel/taste of it, so although you don't have to remove it before feeding, --which you donwith every other one. i do tend to wipe the excess off before feeding, then slap more back on after.

AGnu · 01/08/2013 07:34

One advantage of having 2 so close together is that my lanolin from DS1 is still well within it's use by date! Tis vile stuff though. I'm suddenly remembering why I hardly used it first time round! I hate the feel/smell of it. Still, I'll try anything that might help right now!

DS2 slept from 11 until 5! I woke up actually feeling full & he fed from one side, I hand-expressed 4oz from the other & then fed him again from the same side before expressing another 0.5oz. He actually seemed satisfied after the second feed & is now sleeping peacefully! It's times like this that I wonder if I'm just making a fuss over nothing & we'll adapt eventually... I know it really is an issue that needs resolving though. I think next time the bruising gets bad I'll take a photo so I can remind myself how bad it really is! Still, he's had a good feed & I now have some milk reserved for topping up or replacing feeds if necessary. Takes the pressure off trying to get enough out for him at every feed! Smile [relieved emoticon]

FrussoHathor · 01/08/2013 09:24

Washing-up liquid will get it off your hands. And being an annoying optimist I've got to say; it's got to be worth a try, a if it works better than pain.

I had a lie-in this morning. DH took the dcs downstairs and let me sleep. However I was woken early from my lie-in by DH waving the phone at me.
Fortunately for him I shall forgive him a it was the bf counsellor, and have an appointment with her at the hospital to check out ds's to tongue tie.

AGnu · 01/08/2013 13:21

Hooray! That's very exciting Frus! We've been referred to the hospital too & just waiting for them to call with an appointment! Grin FX we'll both be sorted soon!

FrussoHathor · 01/08/2013 15:16

Seeing her tomorrow. Just hope I'm right about him having it, don't want to look like a twat but there is definately something

FrussoHathor · 01/08/2013 15:49

Omg I just lost the baby. [bad mother emoticon]
i was upstairs, I put him down (downstairs) to call my mum, then went to get something from upstairs. Then looked at the bed and he wasn't there. Had a panic thinking he'd fall or something. Look in his cot; No. Floor; no. Bed again; no. Dds bed; no. Rush down stairs in a panic; he's sat exactly where I left him.

bringonthetrumpets · 01/08/2013 16:19

I have a baby who keeps projectile vomiting on me. Not a little spit-up, like entire stomach contents come rolling out. It's so gross and I have no idea what to do!

peardrop2 · 01/08/2013 16:24

Oh my Shock bring! Bad enough to see a doctor? Or maybe reflux?

Frus & Ag I'm pleased to hear you're both one step forward. It's a nice feeling to know you're on the right track for having some answers!
