Our first post natal thread!

Cooking & Cleaning can wait till tomorrow
for children grow up we've learnt to our sorrow
So wipe away cobwebs and dust go to sleep
I'm cuddling my baby cause babies don't keep!

A thread to celebrate the highs of life with a gorgeous newborn and the lows of sleepless nights, stitches, feeding traumas & Baby blues.

Oops sorry karin I meant a second hand baby sale rather than mothercare! I'm trying to avoid buying too much new at minute, I definitely recommend looking out for local newly new baby sales, I've been to 2 and gotten so many bargains, including some really unusual baby clothes.

karinmaria · 17/05/2013 08:16

No worries Smile and good idea! I'll check my local mum and baby groups. Hoping to find a baby carrier too - living in a second floor flat with no lift (and thieving neighbours grr) so dragging the pram up and down the stairs is crap!

LikeCandy · 17/05/2013 08:40

Congratulations bext!

username & karin I've bought the ikea wooden baby gym, it's only £20 but it's so well made, and the dangly bits can be swapped out for gone made ones. There's no mat with it, we considered getting the faux lambskin to go under it, but she's happy just wriggling round on a blanket!

photo BabyCandy is a master at projectile vomiting - when winding her on my shoulder she often hits the floor/wall. I don't need a burp cloth, I need a burp boiler suit and cape to keep it off me!

mama you must be so proud of Alex :)

Sounds like like ewan the dream sheep is pretty popular.

I've got the daisy baby mei tai now (sorry, can't remember who recommended it now) and it seems pretty short, doesn't come up past her shoulders, is this right? Doesn't seem safe for little ones with wobbly heads! Maybe I'm not tying it right?

BabyCandy had her belated 6w check up this morning (at 7w 6d!)
Oddly nervous!

Second the TT nappy bin it's ace!!! Xx

ElliesWellies · 17/05/2013 11:07

Oh gosh I want a nappy bin, I have two kids in nappies here so actually I really need one very badly!

We are using an old Chicco carrier to take DD out (when not using pram). Luckily DD is big, 11lbs when weighed at five weeks. I did buy a wrap one (close caboo) before she was born but we just can't seem to get on with it. Doesn't seem to support her head at all unless I actually wrap the material round the back of her head, which she won't tolerate. A waste of £50 I think, grrrr.

Enjoy your voucher dysgu, and I don't recommend you blow it on a close caboo carrier! Could you put it towards a stage 1 carseat for later?

Anyone else bankrupting themselves with baby clothes? Love having a boy and a girl but it does mean I have the freedom of all the kids' clothes. DH is scared.

Trishstar · 17/05/2013 11:38

Anyone wanting to get the nappy bin

They have the bin for £10 at babies r us and the refills either 3 for £10 or 6 for £19.99

They are normally same price asda too and a couple other places!

Tho I just used this code for £5 off £50 spend if anyone is getting other bits from babies are us

SneezySnatcher · 17/05/2013 12:17

Eeek! So excited. DSIL has just had a baby girl so there are only 4.6 weeks between her and Henry. Both of them are well. No name as yet but she weighs 7lb 14oz.

Off out to buy presents now we know what they have had. Need to buy H some new babygrows anyway as he's almost grown out of 0-3 ones Hmm

ElliesWellies · 17/05/2013 12:51

Cheers Trish!

usernamegoeshere · 17/05/2013 14:17

Congratulations sneezy!

We have the tt bin too, we got starter pack for £30 a while back, it's awesome!

Baby username just poo'ed 3 times in an hour.

Going to start looking at cots as she isn't comfy in basket now, keeps hitting sides. I want a cot that can go next to bed like a co-sleeper? I heard the ikea gulliver is good for that, does anyone have any experience of it?

LikeCandy · 17/05/2013 15:09

username I have the mothercare bedside cot which I bought got for £50 on eBay - if you don't mind a secondhand frame they come up frequently, the other one I was watching sold an hour later for 99p!
The benefit of a specific co sleeper is there are loads of easily adjustable height options, you'd probably have to DIY the gulliver to fit?
Love our ikea cot mattres and protector though, £60 & £14 iirc and they look so comfy!

SneezySnatcher · 17/05/2013 15:09

user we have the Gulliver as a co-sleeper and I'd highly recommend it. DH had to drill an extra set of holes so that the mattress was at the correct level for our bed. So much cheaper than a 'real' co-sleeper cot!

LikeCandy · 17/05/2013 15:10

sneezy how much does H weigh now?! at 7w6d and 11lb we it moved into 0-3 this week!!

LikeCandy · 17/05/2013 15:15

Eurgh, looking on eBay and this has vexed me, how is a duvet like that any less dangerous than having baby in with you?!

SneezySnatcher · 17/05/2013 15:51

Like he was weighed almost two weeks ago (at three weeks) and was 11lb 14oz (up from 9lb 5oz at birth). He hasn't been weighed since, but he's definitely much bigger and also very long (98th centile for length) so the 0-3 look pretty tight and his feet are bunched up at the ends! The 3-6 are baggy on him but look more comfortable!

Feeding him is a fantastic diet though - back in pre-preg clothes and hoping carrying him will tone my arms!

LikeCandy · 17/05/2013 17:34

Aww sneezy what a lad! That's a great size! BabyCandy is on the 50th percentile for weight and head circumference (I don't think anyone has ever measured her length)
I hope this means we won't get through the clothes I've bought too fast! ellieswellies I know what you mean about shopping - I've even bought some bits up to 12-18m as they were adorable and I couldn't not have them! I'm also guilty of buying the favourite things in more than one size!

EssexWelsh · 17/05/2013 19:47

I know it's normal for bf babies to either poo constantly or hardly ever but is it normal for a baby that pops constantly to go a whole day without? Baby Essex normal poos 5 times a day and has not been since yesterday lunchtime, worried there will be pains tonight!

bunnygirl80 · 17/05/2013 21:52

Congrats bext. It seems so strange to me that I'm sitting here cuddling my 8 week old and there are other April ladies who've only just popped! I just seemed to think once I gave birth everyone else automatically had too Hmm

bona your sleep pattern sounds pretty normal. Babies will do a long block of sleep at the beginning of the night, then continue waking 2-3 hourly after that. The idea is that the long block of sleep will get progressively longer until they eventually sleep through. With DS we didn't land on a 7pm bedtime till he was about 4 months and I think dd will be the same. It didn't really happen till they were on a routine with 3 decent naps in the day. Dd won't do a dream feed either, had hoped she would because she's currently sleeping 8-4 and I hoped topping her up at 11 might push her all the way through the night.

Dd is 8 weeks old today and she's definitely no longer a newborn. She loves smiling at people and she's started batting at her toys. The look of concentration on her face as she tries to figure out how to make her arm go in the direction she wants is adorable.

bunnygirl80 · 17/05/2013 22:02

ellie I have the same fears about DS running riot at toddler groups. I've got myself into a routine of waking dd and feeding her just before we leave so I know she shouldn't need feeding again for at least 2 hours. She then goes in the sling so I have both hands free for toddler wrangling!

ElliesWellies · 17/05/2013 23:10

candy 50th percentile is good for clothing I think, DS is and has always been around 50th and clothes have lasted ages, he is now two and a half and still fits into 18-24 months. DD on the other hand is 91st for weight and off the chart for length, she is almost out of 0-3 at six weeks old. We are still catching up with friends and extended family and they have all bought 0-3 so I have to try to get through all the clothes to make sure she has a chance to wear them all!

bunnygirl Wish I had the hang of slings, it has never worked for me unless I am actually out walking all the time. Otherwise she just wakes up. Will probably just leave it a few more weeks until we are in more of a routine with DD's feeds. Actually that may be never as we never did routines first time! But certainly once she goes longer as it is very unpredictable atm. Will probably try local NCT bumps, babies and beyond.

BonaDea · 18/05/2013 01:32

Essex is your LO breastfed? I believe it is quite normal for poos to decrease in number and sometimes for a day or two pass with nothing. But not sure if this would usually happen overnight! Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will help with and answer soon

BonaDea · 18/05/2013 01:33

P.s thanks bunny girl will just keep persevering!

EssexWelsh · 18/05/2013 03:48

Yes LO breastfed, apparently he went about 11pm with a very liquidy poo, I say apparently as DP just did last 2 feeds and I just slept for over 5 hours!!!!!! Feels amazing, sat up now expressing as too uncomfortable to sleep and wide awake after my mammoth kip! I'm at work for one day only tomorrow, so very happy to have got some zzzzs in, shame I have to be forcing myself to express to replace bottle that was used at 2am but hell-5 hours, so worth it and now know DP can do it, hopefully every weekend Smile

BonaDea · 18/05/2013 03:57

5 hours!! I can only dream of such sleep!! Our LO has taken some bottles but doesn't seen to grasp that it is instead of mummy not as well as so I've ended up feeding him a little bit after. However, we are working on that and will keep at it - at least he'll take a bottle! I would also have to express - I'd be rock hard and leaking after 5 hours (did I mention I'm jealous!??)

HadALittleFaithBaby · 18/05/2013 05:51

Bona Faitlet is the same! She'll take a bottle of up to 4oz but still be rooting afterwards! Less frantically though. I have the same attitude - at least she'll take a bottle. We'll work on her settling without me later - she's not quite 5 weeks yet - DH seems worried about that and the fact that she'll generally only sleep on me in the day but I figure that'll improve with time.

We've had an ok night - had to dream feed her just after 10 - she settled at 9.30 initially but was snacking her chops in her sleep! We co-slept and she swelled. Woke at 1 ish and 3 ish and is feeding now. Hopefully she'll snooze this morning and DH can keep an eye on her while I catch up on kip. Thank goodness for the weekend!

usernamegoeshere · 18/05/2013 07:59

Thanks for cot advice! The mothercare one was first choice but seems hardto get and none on eBay anywhere near me unfortunately (all collection only) my mum is getting it for us and I'm sure she wouldn't mind paying more but they just seem out of stock/discontinued everywhere!

essex baby username is bf and poos loadst but went 24 hrs this week, I think it was antibiotics in my case upset her but it could be something you ate?

Had some better feeding yesterday, 7, 11, 1, 3, 7, 11, 4 and she is just stirring now for morning feed. Noticing that the middle of night feed gets later and later.
