Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
McKayz · 14/03/2013 11:00

Oh my Mum picks DH up at 1pm from nearby train station. He's home for 8 weeks, we go to Cornwall in 2 weeks. I can not wait for a holiday.

Vagolajahooli · 14/03/2013 11:42

In the longterm pear puree will definitely help keep things moving along so see if you can get her into that. How old is she now? Otherwise it sounds like you've tried everything so just see if you can try getting that lactulose in. When she does take it, it won't take long to get it all moving. As sybs says sometimes you've just got too hold them, good idea to get DH doing that. If you blow on her face she will swallow by reflex so as your trickling it in blow on her face to make her swallow

McKayz · 14/03/2013 11:49

She will be 9 months next Wednesday.

Must go take DS2 to nursery. I am looking forward to him being in reception as awful as that sounds. Having to do the school run 3 times a day is getting tedious.

Indith · 14/03/2013 12:05

The poor lamb Kayz. Sounds like you've tried loads. A couple more though (can you tell I've been there? This is how ds1 started and ds2 struggles a bit too). Yell at me to shut up if you have tried it all.

Get a potty. Sit her on it every day after dinner. The position is good for getting things moving and it can help to establish a routine. She won't go right away of course but keep doing it, gradually it will help as she gets older.

water water water water water. I know I said that last time but it is vital. WAter based drinks and breast milk. If she won't take water but will take squash then go for it. You can wean her off squash more easily than you can get a bowl to recover from the consequences of severe constipation.

If you spot her straining then grab her, nappy off, legs in the air. Wait and cycle the legs. When the poo starts to come gently apply pressure to her bum area to support it. If the poo is big and hard it can hurt. By supporting it you lessen that pain and you help prevent little fissures which can open up and hurt next time she goes. By making sure it doesn't hurt you help to avoid the cycle of witholding because it hurts.

Also, lactulose will soften the poo to make it comfortable to pass but it will not MAKE her go. Which is why stuff like potty after dinner is important. Most people poo after a meal.

Diet. Plenty of fibre, check you are getting enough soluble fibre. ALso dairy is often found to be constipating. You could try cutting back or eliminating completely to see if it helps. If cutting back then try to keep it to cooked dairy so let her have normal family meals with dairy in but don't give her yoghurt for example. If you eliminate completely then dairy takes 4-6 weeks to get out of your system so don't expect instant results. I wouldn't worry about you giving up too.

If she won't poo and you can't get teh bloody lactulose in/it isn't helping then go and beg for some glycerine suppositories. They really will work! But only use them as part of establishing a good poo routine.

McKayz · 14/03/2013 13:55

Thanks Indith. The thing is that the poo isn't hard at all. Its the same consistancy it has always been since we started weaning her. I just don't understand what the problem is. One GP said it was too much breastmilk and the other said breastmilk would help.

She isn't very keen at the minute on bottles and cups but I am trying her with it at every meal time and in between.

DH is home now. She's just crying at him. Poor man.

Indith · 14/03/2013 16:21

Poor dh.

The GP who said it was too much milk is talking shit.

Now, bearing ion mind I am not a Dr. If it isn't hard. What is it that worries you? Does she struggle to pass it or is it just that you don't feel she is pooing enough? Omce a week is not very frequent but if she is pooing happily once a week then I'd let it be for now, it is not a huge problem. Of course if she is unhappy, straining in between etc then things need to change.

McKayz · 14/03/2013 16:25

She's in a lot of pain when she does go. Lots of straining and there is a lot of poo. She doesn't eat much for about 12 hours before she does go. It's the pain and screaming that bothers me.

JamInMyWellies · 14/03/2013 16:41

Poor bubba Kayz.

Anyone got any good piles remedies. Mine are out of control. Blush

Just seen Digby the biggest dog in the world get out of a mini. GrinGrin

Indith · 14/03/2013 16:43

OK. Well my best advice then is lots of fluid, leg cycling, try cutting dairy and grab her when she strains to try to help it along. Also call your HV and see if someone can come out to you and show you the colic routine from baby massage, it will help to get things moving.

I find that if I grab ds2 when straining he has often done a little nugget but I know there is more to come. If I wipe along his bum hole when cleaning him up you can tell there is more as it sort of elongates. SO I keep his legs up with knees pressed to chest and give the occasional wipe. Gently obviously, not talking about doing anything untoward with his bum here! But it seems to gently stimulate him to push. Helps if you keep them relaxed and giggling by blowing on their tummy or something. If they are relaxed then their sphincter will relax too. When he poos if he cuts off mid poo and you see poo go back in then I keep on, play with him, leg cycle, wipe over bum hole etc. I can tell when he has done the whole poo as it tails off properly and then bum hole is properly "shut" afterwards ie when wiping it to clean him it stays shut, it does not elongate.

I can talk about poo for a very long time Grin.

I find that if he has gone several days and we have a big poo struggle we might get into a cycle of a big poo, then a few more splatty ones then he starts struggling again. but if you keep at it then it gets better.

Artichook · 15/03/2013 12:37

Hello Ladies,

Sorry about the poo woos Kayz. Dried apricots always sort my girls out (with quite dramatic effects). Cld you purée some for her?

Jam your holiday looked AMAZING. How long we're you ill for and did your PiLs cope? I'm excited you have been taking chances over no. 3, did you want to tempt fate?

Hey ZJ, hope you are well and your girls are happy.

Spot, fab news that the sleep training worked. It transformed my life with each child. I hope you enjoy your longer evening and all the wine! How are the moving dilemas?

I'm so tired. I'm only 31 weeks but I can barely function. I hardly sleep at night due to my bladder, an itchy bump and over active mind. I'm still working full time and trying to do lots with the girls but its sooo hard. It cld be 11 more weeks like this and the thought makes me cry. We aren't ready at all though do I should not wish the time away. Weep. Not sure what to do with myself.

JumpJockey · 15/03/2013 12:58

Hello ladies- sorry for my immensely long absence and I'm not even going to try and catch up (rude bugger) but just to say that I'm in London on Tuesday morning next week so if anyone is free, it would be lovely to meet up for a coffee/lunch and a chat - FB me or say here if you'll be about. I've got a meeting in Piccadilly in the afternoon so free all morning :)

Things are mad at work, major major project launch in a month on top of all my other stuff so no chance to keep up properly. Sorry :(

ZuleikaJambiere · 15/03/2013 17:50

I hope you manage to ease poor DDs poos Kayz. Is anyone else feeling sad that we are discussing poo whilst Beans is away and unable to join in?Grin

Arti do you have any annual leave you could take? Just a day sometime, preferably when the girls are elsewhere, for some peace, quiet and a rest.

DH forgot to take DDs pack up to pre school today, and I got a phone call at 12 from the secretary saying E was in her office and hungry, and DH was uncontactable. Typically I was an hour and a half away and MIL was out for the day too. Fortunately security is lax and I managed to get hold of a neighbour, who let herself in and got DDs lunch box the fridge and to school. Phew, what a palaver! Kind neighbour has been promised Wine

Vagolajahooli · 16/03/2013 08:15

Kayz her poo isn't hard, that's a tricky one. Indith is right the lactulose will not help much. It sounds like the sheer volume of poo wanting to get out is causing her the discomfort. She may be straining but it sounds more like she is just going with the flow (so to speak) of a gargantuan poo. Have you ever had done massive poo, plus a load of wind (most likely trapped wind). Can you remember how uncomfortable that is? Well I think that is what she is dealing with. I don't think there is anything really to blame for it food wise, if she takes in large amounts in one sitting that might account for it but I don't think you can do much about that. I think yoyour best bet is follow Indith's advice on the tummy rubbing, sitting on potty & leg moving. Be careful with tummy rubbing move your hand clockwise around her tummy gently don't push into her tummy. What do you think of that theory?

It does feel strange talking of poo without Beans.

Im a swimming mom this morning, I cycled 11km to this swimming pool this morning with Ds1 & have the same ride home. Really enjoyed it & ds1 is happy as he loves his swim group. I'm definitely going to enjoy this routine in summer.

Arti I feel for you I did not enjoy the last 10 weeks of ds2's pregnancy. Please know we sympathise so come on here whenever you need to vent about it.

I'm swimming mom

Vagolajahooli · 16/03/2013 08:16

Oh & ZJ what a brilliant neighbour you have, what a palaver, couldn't the school have rustled up something?

Indith · 16/03/2013 08:31

mm volume of poo is what gets ds I think. unless I get him nappy of and help then he doesn't keep pushing for long enough to pass it and then it gets backed up. if she is eating lots and not feeding much then that is a big leap in a short space of time and is a lot to get used to.

I have a child free day today to shop as desperate for clothes that fit. feel like shut though.

JamInMyWellies · 16/03/2013 09:58

Morning,

Its the first wkend since forever that DH has been home with me and the boys and it looks like he has a DVT and is now in A&E. He has always had an enormous varicose vein in his calf and he woke up this morning as it is throbbing and bright red. Went to the walk in and was sent straight to A&E. Fingers crossed everyone that its ok.

JumpJockey · 16/03/2013 10:09

Yikes Jam - fingers crossed it's nothing serious.

McKayz · 16/03/2013 13:00

Fingers crossed Jam.

I've tried tummy massage and moving her legs. Occasionally results in a fart but that's it. I've been doing it while she's straining to see if it helps the pain.

I was questioning the lactulose with the GP but she was adamant that DD needs it. I was told to stop giving her finger foods too which is a pain as she's never been a big eater of breakfast but has really taken to toast recently.

JamInMyWellies · 16/03/2013 13:08

Have you a bumbo Kayz? When my two got bunged up I could guarantee a long swoosh around in the bath then 5 mins in the bumbo and bobs your uncle.

JumpJockey · 16/03/2013 14:13

Kayz, not sure what the finger food advice is all about. Surely food is food whether it's mashed up or not... Now I know she's only tiny so this is a bit different but my next door neighbours' son had awful constipation a couple of weeks ago, after a good go on their trampoline he managed two massive poos and everything was back on track. Could you maybe sit her on a bed and bounce her up and down gently by you bouncing up and down? Is she big enough for a door bouncer yet?

Jam, any news on DHs leg?

sybilfaulty · 16/03/2013 15:42

I can't see why finger food would be at fault by itself. You could always steam some carrots (very sweet) and chop some mango to help.

I know she is bf but can you give her extra water so that its easier to pass?

I always find big cup of coffee helps me, but not really good for poor r.

Jam, how worrying for you. Hope dh ok.

Just back from dd2's birthday party. Games here then pizza express. Dh too I'll to come but a lovely girlfriend came instead. God I have wonderful pals. Including you lovely ladies of course.

Wish I cd cone swimming with you Vag.

JamInMyWellies · 16/03/2013 20:30

DH has had an injection in his stomach and been sent home with 5 more to self inject then has to wait for a call to go back in next wk for a scan. Told not too worry as injections will sort him out and prevent it travelling.

Indith · 17/03/2013 09:11

Fingers crossed for dh Jam. How scary!

Kayz I'm very Hmm at stopping finger foods. You can certainly take a good look at her diet though and try to make sure she doesn't have too many things that will bung her up for a bit until you've sorted things But yeah, surely food is food, once it has been through her digestive system there can't be that much difference between finger food and puree!

I have AMAZING boobs. I feel the need to share that. My nusring bras were the ones I got a year ago so were rather too big in back size and they were no longer doing anything at all. I got new bras yesterday and I have an amazing pair. Wrap tops are now my best friend .

Sorry. But at least telling you lot gets it out of my system and prevents me from spamming facebook with news of my wonderful rack.

Nolda · 17/03/2013 10:35

Jam, your poor DH (yuck to self injecting) and poor you, very scary. Do the drs know why this happened? Is there family history or was it the flight?

Indith Grin

JamInMyWellies · 17/03/2013 11:40

Prob the flight.

Indith did you use the measuring scale as suggested on S&B?

We are taking the boys bowling. But there is a huge wait so we are sitting in costa scoffing cakes. Fatties. Grin
