Anyone want to join me here? Mrs. Q, Pachinofan, Spots, Anyone else?

My name is Ponka and I had a little boy (Luke Elliott) on the 7th April. We are doing well. I also have another DS age 22 months.

Please excuse me if I don't get back here very regularly for the moment, it's very busy here, as I'm sure it is with you, too! I thought there should be a thread though.

Natty, how about taking one of his dirty nappies along to show to the doctor? Seems gross I know but they might think youre confusing normal poos of a milk-fed baby with diarrhea, so you might need to show them what they actually look like!

Cant believe other babies are already sleeping through the night. DD still wakes up at least twice for a feed. DS was the same, only started sleeping through at around 12 months. Im not too bothered though, its just a 10-minute feed then back to sleep.

I was determined to bf exclusively till 6 months, but last time DD was weighed she had dropped a centile, so if she goes the same way as DS and stops gaining weight, its onto solids pronto! However if she keeps gaining weight but more slowly, then Im not worried, if think bf babies follow a slightly different curve anyway. IMO the evidence linking early weaning and allergies is pretty clear, but having a baby that doesnt grow properly is worse than having one with allergies!

DebitheScot · 25/08/2006 15:19

I've got quite a big one. He was weighed this week (17weeks) and was 16lb 12oz which wasn't as much as I was expecting. He was just above the 91st centile but has dropped to a bit above the 75th. Going to try him on baby rice this weekend as I'm getting more convinced every day that he wants/needs food.
He's still sleeping through about 50% of time which is good.
Still no rolling over except from occasionally from front to back.
Can't believe he's 4 months old already!

Ponka · 25/08/2006 15:35

God, I don't know what to say about the weight thing, Natty except that if you are worried and think it's an issue, don't let it go with the doctors. Sometimes you need to be a little persistant. I think taking a dirty nappy is a good idea. I bet the doctor won't!

My god, I feel like a bad Mummy! I don't know what DS weighs. I haven't had him weighed for Donkey's years but he looks normal to me! . The only way to get him weighed properly is to take him to the health visitor's clinic (you can't have an individual appointment anymore) and battle in a strange sort of no queue free for all with about 40 other Mums with babies in a small room . Does anyone else have to do this? I've only been once and it took hours. I arrived nice and early and was the third person there for a quick exit but then DS1 announced that he needed a poo and by the time we got back, all hell had broken loose!

DS2 does go through the night now, most of the time, as long as we wake him for a feed before we go to bed. In a few weeks, we have to take him to hospital because he has tongue tie. I guess the consultant will discuss whether we want to snip the little bit that is keeping his tongue fixed to his mouth or leave it. I really don't know what to do. I've heard that it can impede speech. Hmmmm. I think I might have to start a thread on that one soon.

He's now flipping himself all over the lounge. He's really got the hang of this rolling thing. I leave him on one side of the lounge and when I come back, he's practically on the other. Now's the time to watch DS1's little toys. There's a fair bit that's too small that DS2 could shove in his mouth and they are generally strewn all over the floor by the end of the day so I'm going to have to be like a hawk from now on.

Our weigh ins are like that ponka This is the first time I had DD weighed since the HV visited us at home.

littlepiggie · 25/08/2006 17:34

can i join.
ds is 18 weeks old today

Homsa ds is bf, his weight gain has slowed right down, he has lots of dirty nappies, and bf babies put loads on at the start but then it slows down at about 3 months.

2plus2plus1 · 25/08/2006 22:25

We have a self weigh facility. Just 2 sets of scales & a pen to record the weight in the red book. I can make it a 15min round trip from home. But before you say thats better - I have no formal HV at the moment. There are normally 2 HVs at clinic from neighbouring areas (not necessarily the same each fortnight) and they are normally doing development checks. The last tme I spoke to a HV was at my 6 week check and since then I have stopped BF and no doubt start weaning without any 'formal' advice. The worst thing though is that we have to record the weight in a communal book so that the HVs can keep a track. So it is on view for everyone else to see...

pepperrabbit · 26/08/2006 11:10

hi all, gosh this thread has perked up a bit!
Small hijack > Ponka - my DS2 also has a small tongue tie (we do have identical children don't we!) and apparently unless it impedes feeding they don't do much about it. My niece, who is only 3 weeks older than DS2 (so she's what 23 weeks-ish?) had a much more severe one and couldn't get her tongue beyond her gum line and as she got bigger the milk just started dribbling out of the sides of her mouth so she never got a full feed. It still took her parents several distressing visits to the doctors to get a referral and it was all done within 2 weeks after that. Not sure where you are but most of the south of england appears to have to go to Southampton. I'm not sure what to do about DS2 as he feeds quite happily - let me know how you get on.
Natty, my niece also did this and the HV recommended one teaspoon of Yakult before each feed.... she has now cleared up and they only had a month of it so not sure if you'd want to try that.
We're all quite well here - DS2 doesn't rollover yet but that's mainly because he likes to lie watching DS1 hurtle about! So we're not really worried. They are funny the way they "talk" to each other - sometimes they just sit and laugh at each other for no apparent reason which makes me laugh as well

pepperrabbit · 26/08/2006 11:13

ah yes, I meant to ask - has anyone else been told their babies have to have extra injections as they've brought in some new ones, and as we're over halfway through our course they have them at the end?? We have to go back at 5 & 6 months as well now! and I thought it would all be over by this week - we have 4 month jabs on tuesday.

littlepiggie · 26/08/2006 12:27

ds cant roll anto his belly yet (keeps trying though), put can go from his belly to his back when he gets fed up of doing his comando crawl and sticking his bum in the air.
He has just had his 4 month jabs, now mention of ant extra, no more till MMR.

Xavielli · 26/08/2006 16:46

When I took DD for her 4 month jabs they said in the next few weeks I would be called up again for a new pneumonia jab.

Ponka · 27/08/2006 13:47

Yes, ditto. Will be called up for pneumonia here soon.

OP posts:
NattyandThomas · 27/08/2006 16:28

pneumonia jab yup told that too.

update on poo palava...
demanded stool sample be taken and tested. got to drop it in on tuesday, wait for results, and once i have done that if nothing wrong will be referred to a dietistion. (spelling i know)

have decided to take matter into my own hands this weekend and have purchased cow and gates "comfort" formula. has a lower amount of lactose than normal cow and gate so might help if its an lactose allergy. (which is possible as sister was allergic)

other than that we have hit a difficult patch and thomas is now refusing to take his afternoon nap without a fight. if he didnt need it id let it drop but he gets really grumpy and tired!

returning to work after my week off (fully paid as they paid me a week late so couldnt pay childminder so couldnt come into work) early 6am start grrr. having had the week off i have pureed and frozen loads of veg to do us for the next month, always too tired when i get in during the week to cook (as me and dp dont eat dinners)

hope all is well with everyone. thomas had his last jab thursday yay!

littlepiggie · 28/08/2006 19:30

It has been on the news about the new jab,why do babies need a jab agains ear infections? i would rather ds only had jabs agains things that could do him any real harm.

Ponka · 28/08/2006 23:19

Pneumonia can kill the vunerable, can't it? What did you see on the news, Little Piggie? Pneumonia is in the lungs. What did it say about ear infections?

OP posts:
NattyandThomas · 28/08/2006 23:25

yup heard same thing. in the lungs not ears.

2plus2plus1 · 29/08/2006 12:34

Hi,

Just got my appointment for 4month jabs & the new pneumococcal one is on there. Just looked it up & found out the following:

Pneumococcal disease can cause pneumonia, scepticemia & meningitis (the 3 main reasons for them giving the jab). It is also a common cause of ear infection (but I suspect they aren't worried about immunising against that - just an added perk). It is not the only cause of meningitis (but it is the more silent type apparently) though so you still have to be vigilant.

For more details read this article .

Other than that we have been away for the weekend & DD3 is much more nosey - feeding & sleeping was a nightmare. SHe was brilliant on holiday 2 weeks ago though. How things change. She now has a stinking cold, diarreoha (I suspect a change in water is the cause) & conjunctivitis. It never rains but it pours...

littlepiggie · 29/08/2006 19:40

it said somthing about there been 4 things, 3 of them (the ones mentioned already) yes i can see the point in them but it said ear infections, i thought they were just a part of growing up?

Xavielli · 29/08/2006 21:04

Elli has teeth! Was so shocked to see them poking thru this morning. She hasnt whinged about them... bless her

littlepiggie · 29/08/2006 21:16

lucky you, ds has been teething for aboutr a month, but no sighn yet, just a lot of wet bibs, teething gel and one unhappy boy.

2plus2plus1 · 29/08/2006 21:41

Pneumococcus can also cause ear infections - so the vaccine will prevent pneumococcal ear infections. The reason for giving the jab is the other 3 more serious conditions. The prevention of some ear infections is just a bonus. It won't stop all ear infections (or menigitis, scepticimia or chest infections) as pneumococcus is not the only cause. My HV was very wary to ensure that I understood that there were other causes for all of these that are not vaccinated against & to make sure that you still stay on the lookout for symptoms of meningitis etc. It is not like measles for e.g. where there is only one cause. Don't be confused it is not an 'ear infection vaccine' - it is much more than that.

2plus2plus1 · 29/08/2006 21:49

I don't think that was clear. I'll try a bit better.

1 bacteria causes 4 diseases, so 1 vaccine will prevent all 4 diseases (even if one of them is really minor). You can't take away just one of the diseases - it is all or nothing.

With the MMR for example 3 viruses cause 3 diseases, so they have mixed 3 different vaccines into 1 syringe to prevent 3 diseases. You could (theoretically) take away 1 of the vaccines & just protect against the other 2 (as in the seperate vaccines).

I've probably just confused the matter more...

NattyandThomas · 29/08/2006 22:14

thomas is teething too, i can see 2 little bumps emerging. lucky u havent had any crying, thomas has been miserable for weeks.

more on the poo palava
dropped off stool sample today will let u know results

thats about it xxx

Ponka · 29/08/2006 22:22

I think I get it now, thanks. Sounds a little complicated.

Oh my goodness, teeth! Aren't they grown up now? There's no sign of anything here but, like littlepiggie, a lot of dribbling and desire to bite. DS1 was about 8 months before he got any, I think.

OP posts:
littlepiggie · 29/08/2006 22:26

thought it was 4 in one not one that prevents 4 things, does that make sence? Thats different, didnt get why one for ear infections, did have a wiggly baby at the time.

littlepiggie · 29/08/2006 22:29

Think the little mans are well on the way, hv says there is a ridge, lets keep fingers crossed he is feeling better poor little thing
