Anyone want to join me here? Mrs. Q, Pachinofan, Spots, Anyone else?

My name is Ponka and I had a little boy (Luke Elliott) on the 7th April. We are doing well. I also have another DS age 22 months.

Please excuse me if I don't get back here very regularly for the moment, it's very busy here, as I'm sure it is with you, too! I thought there should be a thread though.

Tonton, my DD is also enjoying her thumb rather a lot at the moment - exactly the same as her brother when he was 3 months old! At the time everybody kept telling me to "get him a dummy as it's easier to wean him off it", but I never did and after a few weeks, he kicked the habit by himself!

Ponka · 24/07/2006 23:05

Both my DSs seem to have opted for their two middle fingers to suck on (DS2 misses more than he manages to get them in, though).

In case anyone is interested here is a picture of them.

DTDs still suck their thumbs (at 5yrs). Has done no damage as yet according to dentist. Apparently they only really worry about it when adult teeth are through. One of them shows no signs of stopping though. They did start with a dummy, but soon started to spit it out for their thumb. I don't think there is much you can do if DD has made a decision.
DD3 is a very avid thumb sucker. But she only tends to suck her right. I can't believe how refined the skill has become over the last 2 weeks. It can be difficult to get a bottle in at times!!! It is soooooo good that she settles herself with it though.
I think you lot are right about twins entertaining her though - they certainly more bigger better smiles than everyone else.

Oh and we rolled properly to tummy yesterday. I've been spending all morning turning her back when she starts squarking cos she can't do it herself.

spugs · 26/07/2006 20:02

mines a thumb sucker, she spits out her dummy has a good suck on her thumb then realises its not as good as she thinks it is and cries. She has not rolled over again since the fluke a couple of weeks ago and still has a doddery head. she does sleep fairly well though (gets up once or twice during the night) but seems to sleep a lot during the day

Homsa · 29/07/2006 20:31

Is anyone else losing their hair at the moment? I can't believe how much of mine is blowing around the house like Arizona dustdevils... DS keeps picking hairs up and putting them back on my head ... nice try, son

I'm still waiting to hear a first proper belly laugh from DD. She's 14 weeks now, so it can't take that much longer! Someone, in some movie I can't remember, said that when a baby laughs for the first time, a fairy is born - I thought that was so lovely !

Ponka · 29/07/2006 22:25

Oh yes, I'm losing my hair big time (in more than one sense of the word)! My hair is so long too so it seems worse. DS2 somehow keeps on getting them wrapped around his fingers. It can't be good.

DS1 has chicken pox at the moment and things are not fun to say the least. All I can do is wait a couple of weeks to see if DS2 is in the clear.

DS2 has just started belly laughing and it's the most beautiful thing. Today, in a rare nice moment, DS1 was going up to him and saying "tickle, tickle" in a really high pitched voice and tickling him on the tummy. DS2 found this absolutely hilarious. It was one of those moments that makes all the work worthwhile.

tonton · 30/07/2006 15:37

I'm not losing my hair but I AM still exhausted. I had been expecting to feel way better by the 3 month stage especially as I'm not bfeeding any more.
I'm suffering from 'restless legs' (I have an uncrontrollable urge to move them and flex them while I'm lying down or resting) at night which stops me sleeping well at night and they ache all day. Have given up coffee and alcohol to see if that helps (god I miss them!) but no joy yet.
Ah well, Off on holiday tomorrow!

DebitheScot · 30/07/2006 16:53

My hair is all falling out too. I never noticed it getting thicker so seems odd that so much is falling out.

We are getting really good laughs and squeals and smiles all the time from DS, its amazing and still melts my heart everytime

Ponka · 30/07/2006 21:45

Please excuse the following diversion onto Restless Leg syndrome for Tonton, everyone. Sorry.......

My god Tonton, you have my sympathy. I have had RLS since I was little (although only realised it was a recognised syndrome about 5 years back). Caffine makes me worse (but I am a pepsi max adict and can't possibly give it up ) and being tired also makes it a lot worse. I find that what helps me the most is:

a) Keeping the room as cool (even cold) as possible, which is hard in this weather.

b) Dunking my feet in water staight before I go to sleep and during the night, if it's that bad.

c) Going to sleep with my feet either against a cold concrete wall or even raised up on that wall.

d) Reading something to divert my attention as I go to bed so that I naturally fall asleep

e) I know it's bad but we have bought single beds (they are pushed together, though!). Knowing that my constant thrashing was keeping DH awake seemed to make the RLS worse because I couldn't relax.

I have a book called Stopping Restless Leg Syndrome by Bill Habets, which is quite good. ISBN 1-903904-07-2, if you are interested.

ds does not suck his thumb, just most of his fists, he has hand like a goalkeeper.

allyco · 06/08/2006 22:40

I'm still here........... what a slow thread we are compared to some others!

God, I'm knackered.

Spending my whole life BFing it seems and yet there's only 8 weeks til I go back to work. Those from our ante-natal thread will remember I stayed at work as long as possible and I can't BELIEVE I'll be going back soon.. what is everyone else doing workwise?

Hope all are well and enjoying babies!

Xavielli · 06/08/2006 23:20

Hehe, I keep forgetting this thread is here.

DD is doing really well, really must get her weighed! she keeps trying to sit herself up! She is also rolling over, I am sooo shocked as Ds didnt roll over until he was about 8 months!

Isn't it amazing how much babies differ?

spugs · 08/08/2006 15:39

im going to be a stay at home mam for the time being and mdo the odd day supply from september. my DD rolls on her side all the time now but still not onto her belly.
when are you starting weaning? my sister did both hers at 16 wks but it seems way to soon. think i weaned my 1stDD at about that though.

tootsieroll · 08/08/2006 18:25

DS rolled over 3 times on sunday, and hasn't done any since. I keep forgetting to put him on his front, and when I do, he complains. Might just let nature take its course.

pepperrabbit · 09/08/2006 21:58

ah yes, tummy time.... I too keep forgetting to turn DS2 onto his tummy and consequently he just whinges whenever I do, but it is an excellent way of clearing his nose I've found. I'm sure DS1 had more developmental help from me, and exotic treats like "nappy free time". The day goes by too quickly most of the time though.
DS2 has just been through a really difficult feeding patch, he was refusing almost all bottles and had dry nappies overnight for 3 nights last week. I was really worried, as soon as I laid him back in my arms he just screamed and I couldn't do a thing with him - only dream feeds seemed to work. Health visitor and the doctor weren't worried - HV said "well he's not one of these scrawny babies we'd monitor and worry about" as if i had to wait for him to loose enough weight to become scrawny before they'd pay any attention The solution at the mo is to calm him with a dummy, which I can then whip out with my teeth and put the bottle in..... Not something to try in public! looks very bizarre, but gets him fed. I'm aiming at a minimum of 20 oz a day (he was taking 32/36 oz a day until last week)
Apart form that he's very bonnie!
Allyco - I can't believe you're going back to work so soon! You must only have had 10 minutes mat leave How's your health? have you recovered from the stress DS put on your body? and how have all your DDs taken to DS?? So many questions for a woman with so little time!

abbey1515 · 14/08/2006 16:32

Hi everyone
Can I join you? I was on June thread but had baby Felicity two months, having been induced due to pre-eclampsia. We have been in and out of hospital, but hopefully everything fine now!
Felicity is 15 weeks on Wed and a little angel since following the Baby Whisperer- anyone else tried it?
Fliss can roll over now if I put her on her front, and is crazy about her dummy- I 'accidently' gave her one, and never intended to, and now can't get rid!

pepperrabbit · 14/08/2006 18:36

Hello Abbey, welcome - we're not the fastest thread but everyone's very friendly!
Don't worry about the dummy, DS1 had one and gave it up all by himself in favour of teethers as soon as teething kicked in.
Sounds like you had a bit of a rough start but glad Fliss is OK now.

Symmi · 15/08/2006 15:52

Hi everyone
Recently joined MNs and would like to join this thread. DS born on 9th April, doing really well. Have 2 older DSs 10+8yrs.
Moved to Yorkshire from London last year and found out I was pregnant as soon as we moved into new house. Once shock wore off I was delighted. DS3 is my bonus baby as mw called him. We're all really enjoying him. His brothers think he is "so cool." Dh really into this one.I think it makes him feel younger. He's actually talking about having another one. Dream on!!
Feel much more relaxed with this one. Older (as everyone keeps reminding me!) and wiser. Determined to enjoy every minute. Lucky as I don't have to go back to work this time.
Good to be able to share on here.

NattyandThomas · 16/08/2006 20:28

hey can i join too! i also recently started on this site.. been using babybabble.com until i found this one, anyway my DS was born 12th april

Homsa · 16/08/2006 20:47

Welcome to all the newbies!
Symmi, I moved to Yorkshire last year too! Are you in Sheffield by any chance?
pepper, the feeding difficulties sound so much like what I went through with DS when he was that age! For several months, he refused feed after feed during the day, only to feed like mad during the night (was bf exclusively). It was very very hard to turn this around, especially as he wasn't putting on weight as he should have done and I was too worried to deny him any night feeds. He hardly gained any weight at all between the ages of 14 and 26 weeks, and dropped 2 centiles (but kept growing in length, so got really skinny). I started him on solids when he was 20 weeks old, don't know if that made any difference as he ate very little to start with, but anyway - he's now a strapping big lad and back on the 91st centile for weight, which is where he started out on!
abbey, I went against all my principles today and gave DD a dummy for the first time ever. Ahh, the silence! No more fire-engine howls every 30 seconds whenever I dare direct my attention away from her!!! I'm an instant convert (but determined to get rid of the thing when the front teeth come through - please remind me I said that!)
I've now finally gotten round to potty-training ds and we seem to have cracked it in just under 2 weeks. I was so sure it wouldn't work (not least because he's autistic and everyone told me autistic kids are the hardest to potty train), and he's proved me wrong yet again!

pepperrabbit · 16/08/2006 21:25

Hi Homsa, congrats on the potty training, you're a braver woman than me.DS1 can be followed by a cloud of flies with people fainting as he goes by and he'll swear blind he hasn't done a poo! I've never been worried by dummies tbh, though as a note of caution, I had an unusually good look while cleaning one today and it was quite worn around the base where the rubber meets the plastic - I thought the advice to throw them away after a month was just to sell more dummies but it looked quite dangerous.
DS2 has perked up his feeding slightly and now takes maybe 25oz a day which is a bit better.

Ponka · 16/08/2006 22:07

Hi welcome, everyone who is new to the slowest thread on Mumsnet! Hopefully with a few more it might get a bit faster.

DS1 had chicken pox 3 weeks ago and I just found out on Monday that DS2 has it now. He must still have my immunity because he only has 1 spot but he is still infectious and we have had to cancel all our plans . He's fine with it though. He's still a little ray of sunshine. Today DS1 was jumping on our bed and he was watching him. He was in hysterics. It was the funniest thing he'd ever seen. Don't you just love this age? I gave him something shiny to play with today and he looked like he'd just won the lottery. If only the simple things could stay so fascinating forever....

tonton · 17/08/2006 16:21

Ponka - thanks for the RLS info. Have been away for a couple of weeks hence not responding. I will try your tips and also the book. Giving up caffeine (so depressing! I love tea, coffee, coke....) has made a big difference. Sorry ton hear about the chicken pox in your house!

Allyco nice to hear from you. I am going back to work fulltime in october. Just about to start trying to organise a nanny share nwith a neighbour who has a baby the same age. Hopefully the nanny will also be able to look after dd1 (6) after school.

dd2 is rolling around like a champion. Still madly sucking her thumb - dummies...i wish!

NattyandThomas · 19/08/2006 19:26

lol, i was terrible and gave my thomas a dummy within days off his birth, however he dosnt seem to attched to it unless he is sick.
oh and mentioning sickness he had his first cold this week and had a terrible cough and i ended up taking half the week of work because i couldnt put him down else he would scream!

me and my partner have decided to throw caution to the wind and try for another baby.

is anyone else feeling really broody in the last few months?

Ponka · 19/08/2006 21:03

Oh my goodness NattyandThomas, that is very brave! My body and brain still haven't recovered from the first birth yet. The chances are that we won't have another one but even if we were going to, I shudder to even think about it at the moment.
