Part 2: in which our babies learn to sleep through the night and make us tea in the morning

Honeymum - for entertainment Erin gets to kick in her baby gym, kick minus nappy for a bit at night, she likes to stare at lights or at the window and I'll just talk nonsense to her and she does lovely big smiles now in response Grin - her attention span outwith eating or sleep is so short.

I'm also lucky that my parents/brother are near so she gets sung at and stories told by them.

smileyhappymummy · 21/11/2012 19:01

Baby smiley seems to like looking at our ceiling, think its because we've got beams making a nice striped pattern. Also gets to lie under her baby gym and gets shown some of those baby's first book things, and gets sung to, poor thing.

hufflepuffle · 21/11/2012 19:04

Entertainment? Hav been big fan of baby gym since about 2 weeks. First week or so only lay on for 5 mins max and has been a constant source of delight for mummy and daddy since! Cos the time spent there happily has increased almost daily! Will happily lie for at least half hour now (unless having a grouchy feedathon day) and bat the noisy toys with his wee arms!

Other than that he is not entertainable by singing or talking to!! which I hope comes soon. Tho he will sometimes stay on changing table having a chat with me for a while. Patiently waiting for smiles, 5 wks old today- hopefully soon???!

X

hufflepuffle · 21/11/2012 19:04

Oh yes and he is totally fascinated by vertical blinds!

meepsmum · 21/11/2012 19:06

Oh yes baby gym is great. Meep gazes at toys hanging. Esp. If i move them as they have bells etc in them. Seems obsessed with window too even in this gloomy weather

HoneyMum21 · 21/11/2012 19:32

Hmm. We have baby gym but can't say he's overly interested as yet. Not quite 4 weeks and was nearly 7 weeks early so I'm prob expecting too much from him! Still only windy smiles too.

Meep we're on brothers and sisters box sets too!

Zara1984 · 21/11/2012 20:09

Routine?? HA! Unless that routine is "be constantly amazed at how many bottles DS can guzzle in a 24 hour period".

Bought one of those Fisher Price Rainforest baby gyms today for DS and he LOVES it. He stares at all the different parts of it and coos and gurgles, kicking his arms and legs. Have tentatively tried 1-2 minutes of tummy time on it and he seems to like it too. Very very happy baby on his gym. Hope he doesn't get bored of it haha could be a different story tomorrow!

Felt like I did a good deed by giving all my breastfeeding paraphenalia (specially designed cushions, Lansinoh, breast pads, Boob Design hot/cool pack and breast pump) to a friend who's bfing! Hopefully it makes her life easier :)

Yomping - laughing at the shrunken vibrator! I feel the unhorniest I have ever done in my life, but also the most tired - am hoping they are connected and this isn't a permanet state of affairs... Esp a shocker after pregnancy when I couldn't get enough - maybe that was supposed to see me through the next 6 months!

Crazy - another non-fan of bathtime here, he just howls and it ends up being a quick dunk. Only doing every couple of days, usually prompted by a giant wee on himself. The thought of doing daily baths feels like it would just raise the roof too much!

Got to go, sounds like monsieur is stirring, will post more later, esp on formula feeds, thanks for all your replies on that...

meepsmum · 21/11/2012 20:24

Honeymum- on last series now...eek.
Stick with bathtime guys...tonight meep didnt cry when drying off...a first cry free bath but has taken weeks of bath every night. Will prob b different tomorrow..

24 hours of mixed emotions.

Had Mat Nurse Mk2 last night, for the night. She turned out to be very efficient but not a warm sort of person. I just didn't really bond with her. Anyway, DF and I went to bed together for the first time since DD was born and it was properly lovely. I kept reaching out in the night to touch him and it was fab. I woke a few times but went back to sleep quickly and so got about 8 hours sleep. Awesome.

Today, however, has been karmic payback. Whether in response to DD's growing colic, her sensation at being abandoned last night, or some other factor, DD has been a Velcro screaming baby today. My arms are agony. I have literally not been able to put her down apart from a brief car trip (to see cranial osteopath) and a buggy trip to buy new batteries for prince lionheart (which didn't work - the ffffging thing is broken and I was only given it two weeks ago). She had shocking colic or wind and it has taken me over an hour and a half to get here to sleep tonight. Argh. And, to complete the day, she's been snack feeding, falling asleep after 15 mins, then wanting more 45 mins later, so my nipples are very sore.

Health visitor wondered whether DD has silent reflux as she hates being flat on her back. Will put up with the chair for short periods but the gym makes her howl in under five minutes. Hum. Very jealous of all of you who have cute, non screaming babies cooing at things. Hideous day. DD even screaming when being held. Argh.

I have only managed to skim read everyone else. Sorry. Must head off to bed now. Want to scream.

meepsmum · 21/11/2012 20:47

London..
Our prince lionheart alsp broke after 2 weeks.... John lewis said id have to take it on for them to look at. Told them i had month old baby so they posted new one straight away. Now have two so hopefully this is the toy meep gets attached to!!!
Meep also has manic evenings when feeds constantly. Dummy has vastly improved these and help stretch gaps to abput 3 hours. Meep initially refuses dummy but then loves it and sends him to sleep. Only gove it in eve when he becomes frantic. Good luck tonight hope u and everyone gets som sleep x

crazypaving · 21/11/2012 21:16

livvy sorry you've had such a tough day. I suppose in some ways it's great that you've been able to face such a tough day with a good night's sleep behind you - imagine if you'd been up all night!! Maybe give the sling another go? DS1 and 2 both fought it initially but now DS2 sleeps like an absolute angel in it almost all day, and settles so quickly to sleep (it's the only place he settles quickly to sleep. DH and I are currently tag-teaming - it's 9.15 and he's been awake solidly since 4pm.........................[scream emoticon]).

Try putting her in it and going for a walk outside. If it does end up working for you it will be a life-saver. I can't tell you how much the moby has saved my life this time round, but the first few times i tried it I was despairing because I was convinced he would never accept it.

crazypaving · 21/11/2012 21:41

gah seriously where's the off button on this baby?

HoneyMum21 · 21/11/2012 21:51

If you give one crazy can you let us know where it is?

HoneyMum21 · 21/11/2012 21:51

Find not give. Stupid phone.

lisbethsopposite · 21/11/2012 22:28

Livvy in life's karma/balance you are going to have the easiest teenager.......
This shall pass. This shall pass. This shall pass. This shall pass. This shall pass. This shall pass. etc

Squid might have said this before, but in awe of your seeming resumption of life post baby, and 7-7 sleeping! Also nice to hear about the smiles and eye contact from Jess, I'm looking forward to a bit of payback on that front soon..

Last night was properly ill, up every 10 mins for the toilet at one point, bloody horrible. DP was a saint though, took bean off to the spare room with her and did all the night time stuff. Parents have been over last 3 days on the trot to help out with poorly toddler as well, so grateful to have that willing help nearby. My mum is from a culture where grandparents are fully involved in the baby's care so has been more than willing to help out. Can fully sympathise with anyone getting a maternity nurse where necessary, all support is invaluable.

On the formula front, been tracking with an app that has been really helpful (babyconnect) esp as it means both me and DP can update and sync details, useful to track exactly how much milk the little piggy is guzzling..

Lizzietow Since getting him weighed and reassured by HV that he isn't about to turn into a sumo wrestler, been giving slightly larger feeds of 5oz every 3-4 hours, roughly 7 a day. Seems to be similar to Anne? Previously were doing about 9 feeds every 2.5hrs so it seems to have worked upping the feed size from 3-4oz.

Zara glad to hear of similar poo situation! I changed brand from c&g to hipp, but not v happy with the 4-50degree water thing with the hipp so will prob revert after this lot finished and already have stacks of c&g in the cupboard. Have to say the big bottle premade stuff was a godsend today when feeling rubbish. I'm also going to donate all my bf paraphenalia, will be glad to put the whole sorry episode of bf behind me tbh. Ii was also concerned about the number of feeds vs what it says on the tin but HV said the same to us and I was reassured to see he wasn't overly putting on weight.

AnneH656 · 22/11/2012 05:07

October sounds similar def :-)

Although not at the mo. DS has a cough/cold. Help . He is 4 weeks. What can I do?????

Ps DD not puking anymore. Small mercies...

AnneH656 · 22/11/2012 05:10

October how are you feeling now? I have a chest infection which is bad enough. Sickness d and v must be actual hell....

squidkid · 22/11/2012 06:53

hello

sorry for making you all jealous with the sleeping baby - she is good, though I think the 7-7 was a one off, but I am getting her to sleep for a 5 -6 hr stretch most nights. She is one of the older babies on here though, and born post-term

despite wonder-sleep, completely failed to cope last night - boyfriend was out so I settled her to sleep around 9pm but when she woke at 2am literally couldn't work out what to do... i felt all feverish and confused. fed her and lovely boyfriend took her to spare room to sleep. i didn't even realise he'd done it until i woke up at 05.30 and no one there. found them, fed her again.

Ah, I feel rough. Boobs are ok so it's not mastitis or anything... probably just running in the rain like an idiot. ear very painful. want sleep even though I've had lots. have taken baby back off boyfriend. can't find thermometer, taken paracetamol... bleeurgh

squidkid · 22/11/2012 07:03

poor october and anne... properly ill i shall stop whinging
glad you got some sleep livvy, screaming tricky baby may turn into easier baby in a few weeks, mine did...

if not for this thread would not have worked out what the point of footless sleepsuits was... tall babies ah-ha! jess has caught up to 50th centile and is about 10lb now but still in newborns, 0-3 month stuff is a bit big... she is a shortie tho like her mama

also amazed by the babies who poo every 2 days! We have about 6-8 poos a day!!! Confused hope this is ok... better out than in I guess

smileyhappymummy · 22/11/2012 09:26

We are struggling with 4am. Every night, Melissa seems to decide that this is getting up time. But I don't agree!
She seems to be sleeping worse as she gets older not better.... 7 weeks today. Back to GP today to talk about reflux, maybe not helping? Changed all clothes x3 overnight thanks to mega pukes. Getting very tired now.....

lisbethsopposite · 22/11/2012 09:59

we woke in night. it sounded like i was sleeping with peppa pig... snorting. anyway cue nosedrop session and wide awake baby. cuddles and boobfeed back to sleep. all took 90mins. worth it for content face and we all slept til 8 this morning!!!

going into town for a free make-up! and coffee - 2 treats today.

Hope you are ok LLivvy.
Squid - every night can't be good or bad.
Toddler alert!!!

londonlivvy · 22/11/2012 10:11

Went to the doc and she reckons silent reflux so we have infant gaviscon and am crossing my fingers. That was a truly hideous night. She would only sleep on my chest. My arms hurt.

crazypaving · 22/11/2012 10:16

smiley same here - 7wks today and sleep getting worse not better. 4am also pain in the arse o'clock here. Darkest hour is just before dawn?? I have 8wks in my mind for things to start improving. come on babypaving...
