happy birthday biscuits!

nope, total fail here. DS2 woke up again as i got out of the shower and i had to send DH (who had no idea i was up) to get him, DS1 has woken up and asked for his lamp on.

so I'm now stuck with a baby asleep on my knee. I'm not sure how to inconspicuously sneak him back to the cot without DS1 wanting up, he may spot the fact that I'm only wearing pants and have a towel on my head... DH has gone back to sleep as well.

we seem to have been ok for nocturnal poo, hope DD is getting on ok scarlet.

jaggythistle · 07/11/2012 06:50

i start work at 8 when i go back so i need to be out by 7.30 at latest.

i remember doing a kind of morning dream feed with DS1 when i lifted him out of the cot if he was asleep when i was getting ready to leave. may not be required if DS2 is this restless in the morning.

musicalmrs · 07/11/2012 09:20

Morning! Bouncing DD on my knee to make her have her morning nap (the trickiest to get her to comply with!). Sorry for the lack of updates, have been madly busy- but have been reading during the night!

Hope the poo situations sort themselves out Scarlet. Jaggy, hope you had a night with no nocturnal ones! DD never used to poo in the night, but has for the past 4/5 days - argh! Very sore bottom too, so have to be on the ball :( Argh...

Hope your trial run went well this morning too Jaggy!

Scream, glad Sunday went so wonderfully! The pictures are fab. I too am plotting my Christmas baking!

Ninja, crossing fingers for the revised mortgage. Our company wouldn't let us take any extra out for works, so we've had to make do with doing ours slowly. The main ones (kitchen, plumbing, flat roof and rotting patio doors) have now been done - just got to hope the boiler makes it through the winter...

Too, hope M slept better last night. Thanks for the comforter tips - had wanted to introduce one. During every feed? That's probably one of the things I'm doing wrong..!

Pet, sounds like you had a wonderful holiday! :)

Busybusy here. Deadline at the end of the week, and then off to Cumbria for a few days so DD can meet her great grandma! DD is also very close to crawling - up on her knees, and has done a few bunny hop type things over the last two days. Only a matter of time... eek. She's also a non-sleeping brooker :( Food was going well but we've had a gew loose greeny nappies, so back to just milk for a couple of days I think until her tummy settles down.

Aha, she's asleep... back to work!

cakes82 · 07/11/2012 09:49

Last night was really good she fed and went to sleep about 9.30 woke at 2 and she was ravenous took an hour in total to feed change and settle her. Then she woke at 5.30. Just to be really peculiar she was barely snuffly overnight and seems worse this morn, it has been other way round Confused altho could have something to do with her not letting me put her drops in nose this morning.

Happy Birthday Biscuits

We have first weekend stopping at family coming up and seeing all the rest of family that doesn't travel. As DD is a nosy little miss i'm expecting an over tired grumpy snuffly little person and not much sleep sat night, oh dear,,,

Hope everything gets sorted Ninja

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 07/11/2012 10:07

Happy birthday, Biscuits! Hope you have a lovely day. Got anything special planned? Envy of E sleeping through the night! What a good birthday present, clever boy!

Hope DD's nose is on the mend, Cakes.

Musical, hope your work goes well today.

Grr, I am so stupid. I poured melted fat down the sink and it promptly backed up. Took the U-bend off and cleaned it out - no change. Tried drain unblocker - nope. Have given in and called the plumber after the dishwasher outflow backed up into the sink also and I had to bail it out with a pan. Blush Plumber should be coming at some point today. The landlord pays for the plumber, but do I confess that it was probably my fault? I might have to pay if I do. The plumber might easily be able to tell that it was me, though - a drain doesn't fill itself up with congealed fat. Confused In the meantime, I can't run the dishwasher or the washing machine, and we have a huge mountain of dirty clothes!

I'd better go get dressed and try to tidy the kitchen without access to the sink, grr.

musicalmrs · 07/11/2012 10:23

Ooo, happy birthday Biscuits- sorry I missed that earlier! Hope you have a lovely day :)

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 07/11/2012 10:29

Bad baby! M pulled the standard lamp over. It was really cute - she was holding the stem of it (it's got a slender metal pole and it's quite light) in one hand, with the lamp leaning at a 45 degree angle over her walker tray, looking like a mini engineer. When is she old enough to understand 'no'? I took it away from her and said 'No!' firmly, and she just looked up at me quizzically and wandered off to examine the bookcase instead. Then she went for the (empty) wine rack, which I had to remove because it could poke her in the eye.

I'm procrastinating, can you tell?

JenFawkes · 07/11/2012 13:20

Brooking for more and less poos as required

Happy Birthday Biscuits my turn next

Biscuitsandtea · 07/11/2012 14:56

Thank you for all the birthday wishes Smile

So far a very marvellous day Smile. DH did some awesome pressies including one of the new Starbucks coffee machines that reportedly taste just like a real Starbucks (I'm a sucker for a vanilla latte Smile) because I rarely get near a proper coffee since I don't work any more. And a fab diary with a picture of the boys on each page (and at a week to view that's quite a few pics!) and a few other bits and bobs. Just been out with the boys for lunch and having just let ds2 cuddle my hand to sleep (no rod for own back being created here, oh no...) I'm off to try out my coffee machine.

Oh and we had a lovely visit from Scarlet and her dd this morning which was lovely. Although even the state of my wooden floors couldn't scare dd into pooing - sorry Scarlet Grin

Would anyone care to expand on 'how to introduce a comforter'? I have one ready to go and really think it would work for ds2 as he loves to cuddle my finger / hand so if I could just get the same associations with something that wasn't a part of my person.....

Happy Birthday biscuits! Yay for great presses from dh!

Hmm. I tried for weeks to push a taggie on A. Held it between us when feeding etc etc. No joy. Noticed she did like to suck her cuddly monkey so started to put that in the cot with her. She likes it now, however...

Both my kids have had 'comforters' (fav cuddly toys) but both really only got into them after they started nursery as I sent them in as their 'toy from home' thing.

scarletfingernail · 07/11/2012 15:46

DS has a blanket that he still uses while sleeping. He holds the corner in his hand and rubs his fingers on it while asleep. I'm mean and have never let it leave the house (makes me feel a bit queasy when I see kids at playgroup with grubby skanky toys or blankets that they won't let go of!) but even now he will kick off big time if it goes in the wash and isn't dry in time for bed.

Great to see you earlier Biscuits, I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. I expect a full on Starbucks experience next time I visit!

Too you know you need to fess up! My DH would have the U bend off and clean it all out himself rather than pay someone else to do it. Can your DH not be persuaded?

Still no poo....

JenFawkes · 07/11/2012 16:00

All Bran always works for me if I need to get things going Scarlet

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 07/11/2012 16:10

Scarlet, we did take the U-bend off - it didn't work! Plumber has been and gone - the drain outside is blocked. The estate's drain man is now coming tomorrow to see if he can unblock it. The plumber said I could use the sink tonight, but he didn't say if it was ok to run the dishwasher/washing machine. Confused Might risk it with a load of clothes.

OK, on the comforter thing - Elizabeth Pantley, The No-Cry Sleep Solution pp 117-119: "Choose a soft toy that your baby is already attracted to, or pick a safe stuffed animal that meets these criteria:

No button eyes or nose, nor any small, potentially removable pieces
No clothes, hats or other removable pieces of fabric
Firm, not floppy
Small and easy for a baby to hold and manipulate"

"When you have carefully chosen the lovey [ie, comforter], place it between the two of you whenever you nurse your baby, give him a bottle or rock him. At other times of the day, you might even want to 'wear' this lovey inside your shirt for a few hours to give it that lovely Mommy (or Daddy) smell, because babies can recognise their parents' scents. At first, it is best to use this lovey only at sleep-times so it becomes one of the sleep-time cues.

You can introduce a lovey at any age."

That's the gist of it - she expands a bit on how toddlers will go on to use their loveys as security when they get older, but that doesn't matter to us at this stage. My trouble will be picking a comforter from the vast mountain of cuddly toys M has!

Biscuitsandtea · 07/11/2012 19:19

Too I appreciate this is using you as a book report but just out of interest what does EP say about the thing about using the comforter for security as a toddler? Just interested to know if I should be concerned about ds1 and his monkey.....

DreamingOfPeace · 07/11/2012 19:24

too and pet I had little white rabbit stuffed down my top for extended periods with DD, she never took to it. I have been trying with the comforters for about 3 months, but now they love them its great

Oh crying, maybe not that great...

But most importantly, happy birthday biscuits!

scarletfingernail · 07/11/2012 19:39

Wah hey! We have blast off! Lots of screaming and real tears, but we had poo at last! Just a very sore bum to heal now.

hawthers · 07/11/2012 20:03

Happy birthday biscuits looking fabulous at 24 again my dear :o

Great news on the poo scarlet

Am still dealing with the fall out from 2 weeks half term but will try to catch up soon. Ds' eating has got better so thank you all for your kind words and support.

Biscuitsandtea · 07/11/2012 20:06

How come you get 2 weeks half term Hawthers?

Nice to see you by the way - missed you for a few days Smile

OP posts:
TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 07/11/2012 20:37

Biscuits, EP says that her 12 yo still has her lovey in her bedroom, so I don't think she sees them as a problem in older children! She just says that toddlers are more likely to pick their own lovey; and that you should be careful to buy more than one if possible in case you lose the first one.

Dream, that's v interesting. I think there's a vast gap between EP's instructions and the child actually following them.

Well done, Scarlet's DD! Poor little bum.

Biscuitsandtea · 07/11/2012 20:43

Ah I see - thank you Smile

Yes, we have often run into problems where I have found the answer to a problem in a book but whichever DS hasn't read the same chapters Confused

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 07/11/2012 21:01

Slightly longer book report. I haven't finished the book yet, but this bit seems key. It's all about teaching your baby to resettle themselves when they wake in the night, for babies who only go to sleep on the boob (or with the dummy/bottle).

Step 1: 'Pantley Gentle Removal Plan/Pantley Pull Off', which is removing the nipple (or dummy or teat) from the baby's mouth before she falls completely asleep. As soon as she's stopped sucking vigorously, take the nipple out. If she roots, let her have it again and then remove it after a few seconds. Repeat until she gives up and falls asleep without the nipple.

Try not to wait until she's completely asleep. Stand up, rock baby gently. Then lay her down, keeping arms around her and still rocking. Slide arms out once she's asleep. If she stirs, pat her/talk to her quietly. If she wakes up and howls, pick her up and start again. Keep doing this until you feel like it's working.

Step 2: When baby is settled and sleepy, but not asleep, put her in her cot. Pat or touch her, say 'sleep words' if you've established any, until she falls asleep. If she wakes and cries, pick her up and repeat. When you can do this with a fair amount of success, go on to Step 3.

Step 3: Comfort without pick-ups. When she wakes and cries, go in and pat/touch/say sleep words/cuddle in the cot. If she cries, revert back to Step 2, but try to make it brief.

Step 4: Soothing pats.

Step 5: Verbally Soothing - stand inside door and say your sleep words.

Step 6: Comfort from outside the doorway.

Has anyone tried this? Pomme, did you say you had? Did it work? I'm working on the PPO. M will now sometimes spit the nipple out of her own accord, turn her head away from me and fall asleep, which is great progress. On the other hand, she's still waking up multiple times a night, and if she wakes up as I put her down she always howls and always has to be picked back up and fed again.

jaggythistle · 07/11/2012 21:17

Here's how my day started Grin

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1606157-DS1-has-just-informed-me-that-his-nipples-are-just-like-his-willy-i-love-3-year-old-logic

DS1 still awake so can't go in with baby as he'll start bouncing about again.

I have an amazing new sleep technique! I may write a book about how to have your baby fall asleep in the high chair while eating yoghurt. Important to take photo and upload to Facebook prior to wiping face.... This confused me muchly at tea time yesterday.

yay for poo Scarlet, but boo for poor wee sore bum :(

pommedechocolat · 07/11/2012 21:40

I did do it too and it helped start the process. I did sitting by the cot as well rubbing my hand along the side. To be honest though getting her to take a dummy was the best thing. She still wakes in the night but now a bad night is 3 wake ups really. We sometimes get one wake up nights now too! Woo hoo.

Dd1 still has a dummy to sleep. She's 2.7 now. When should I be thinking about removal and maybe I should delay with move to Italy, different ore school etc? When does it start damaging their teeth, anyone know?

Whoop whoop for poo scarlet!

I think it's soo cute when they fall asleep mid food eating jaggy! Dd2 likes to doze in the pushchair half chewed biscuits firmly planted in her little fist.
