Just a quick post for the breastfeeding ladies.
After suffering with v sore, dry, scabby lips someone on the ante-natal recommended putting some nipple cream on them. I hadn't bought any yet, thought i'd wait see how I got on with BF as it's quite expensive.
Decided to get some yesterday as my lips are still bad.
Boots have Lansinoh on offer, cost £6.55 instead of the £10/11 it normally costs.

Thechick · 12/11/2012 15:30

Hey all
Congrats to all the new recruits and my sympathies to those with issues. My LO decided he didn't want to breast feed this morning and I've been kind of struggling for the whole day to get him to eat. He has a good feeding session then a bad one and he's usually pretty good when it comes to the boob. I spoke to le leche league and they said that sometimes babies are a bit fussy especially prem babies when getting to their due date or he could be getting ill.
Have just read over the last 4 pages
yellow I've been using the tablets, still trying to work out what dosage I should be taking.
Someone mentioned calpol to get their newborn to sleep, umm not sure if it was a joke or not, but I personally don't think it's a good idea to give a new born a medicine unless they need it for their ailments
I have a completely different parenting style to dh, which has caused a few issues to begin with but if we keep communicating I'm sure we'll get there. This is his first baby and my second and I'm all for bf and co sleeping and picking up when they are crying, but dh will let him cry and likes to know how many ml he's taken in feed.
And clothing, my LO is in a short sleaved body suit with a baby grow on top. He's starting to grow out of early baby clothes, woohoo!! Sorry about the long post.

DonnaDoon · 12/11/2012 15:57

Aaaah Debussy congrats and Im not surprised he only feeds for5-8 mins he is only 48hrs old...he will get tired after any longer...who ever told you that has high hopes ...my dd did just that and gradually started feeding for longer and only fed for 20 mins at 4wks old so do not worry

NervousAt20 · 12/11/2012 16:06

debussey my DD is 3w 3d old and she only feeds for about 10min maybe a couple of min more or less every 2 hours at a push 2 1/2 hours. I can't wake her up to feed because she just won't latch on and if she does she has a couple of sucks and is zonked again Grin she's gaining weight well so MW told me to just feed her when she wants it

NervousAt20 · 12/11/2012 16:07

Twilights out Friday and I'm not going Sad think that deserves a large chocolate cake Grin

ValiumQueen · 12/11/2012 16:20

Yep, calpol should not be given to aid sleep. It should only be given when a high temp needs lowering, or if baby is on obvious discomfort.

horsey growth spurt at 2 weeks.

Lansinoh can be prescribed by your GP. Wish I had known that before I forked out for it. It is good for all sorts of sore bits - when DD2 was teething and chewing her thumb 24/7, it cured it in 48 hours. I still have a split in my lip that it will not heal though. I am very run down, with mouth ulcers etc.

DS has had a good day, sleeping and eating at regular intervals. DD will be well enough for nursery tomorrow too, thank The Lord!

ValiumQueen · 12/11/2012 16:21

I have tried to wake DS for a feed, but if not wanting it, he will not have it. The girls however would happily eat in their sleep.

horseylady · 12/11/2012 16:53

My mouth is full of ulcers too :( I feel like crap.

Going mad sat in the house waiting for bloody people to come. Went to see the horses today then got home and had a huge panic attack :(

Think ds has colic. Mw (who discharged us today yay!!!) suggested giving him 1oz boiled water to 'get things moving' but he goes once a day. He's just very uncomfy unless lying on his belly. He was hysterical after his feed 20mins ago. Seems to read that it's normal for them look like they're straining to go? Perhaps I should try a different formula? Or maybe it's just the growth spurt? Or something else all together!! He's full of wind poor boy :(

YellowWellies · 12/11/2012 17:04

Wahey the wee man has gone from 7 lb 2 to 7 lb 7 since Thursday. Hurray! We're onto one top up feed of EBM a day now - which DH feeds him last thing before bed and I think we're going to stick with that so that Jonas stays used to taking a bottle. Am so chuffed.

Horsey don't blame your formula - Jonas is BF and strains like an old man when fouling his breeks (which seems to be a 2 hourly event so am v Envy at the once a day poos!!!) I just think boys have shit core muscles as they don't have to give birth. I think Jonas needs a book and half an hour on the loo like DH to go Grin

thechick we're out of tiny baby clothes now too and into the newborn ones. Am v chuffed.

Am flying solo for the first time today as my wonderful sis has gone home Sad. So far - so good - other than a massive BF session just as the plumber knocked on the door Blush.

It sounds like there are lots of births of the team pink variety going on with the November girls on the other thread. Can't wait til we're all together.

DesperateHousewife21 · 12/11/2012 17:23

I'm quite sad I now can't go and see twilight will have to wait for the DVD.

My boobs hurt ALOT, milk has come in today. She's fed from both but doesn't seem to be draining them, she has what she wants then comes off and I can't make her feed anymore.
Nipples are v sore esp when they are cold!! Really hope it doesn't cause an infection if she's not draining them, she feeds for a good 20 mins so its not as if she's not feeding for long.

I went to a breastfeeding group at my local surestart with ds I think I'll go back there again. Alot of the same people go so will be nice to see them again.

DebussyHead · 12/11/2012 17:53

Thanks Nervous and Donna, that makes me feel better he is only 48 hrs as u say.

These afterpains when BF are something else. Ouch!!! At least it's shrinking the uterus....

horseylady · 12/11/2012 18:28

Yellow - he was much happier when it was poo per feed!!! Now he has one mammoth daily poo :( he's ultra grumpy tonight hence questioning the formula!! Sure it's just one of those things!!

I never replied to you labour/contractions last night (well I started then he became a warewolf lol!!) yes he was back to back, head twisted with cord round neck, maybe twice. It hurts contractions in your back. I can still remember it and omg panicked with the afterpains!!! I think I have a phobia of labour now!! Seriously. I need to talk through it with someone at somepoint. Just to understand why. As you say good job he's gorgeous!! And worth it!!

We were discharged today, he's now 8lb 8!!! Little monster. Nearly out of newborn size!!!

DebussyHead · 12/11/2012 18:57

Horsey that sounds frightening delivery Sad. Sounds like you beed to talk it through and process what happened.

Mine was back to back too (agony!) and massive 9lbs 8oz, I also feel I need at some stage to talk through my delivery as I feel a bit traumatised by it if i am honest. That sounds a bit dramatic and I can't quite put into words how I feel. I had contractions on top of contractions as the Syntocinon drip was on too high causing uterine hyper tension (i think that was the phrase) which basically meant I couldn't get any oxygen or break between contractions. I remember trying to talk and not being able to come off the gas and air and trying to communicate with my eyes to say 'help me' or 'epidural' it was awful. From 8pm till 6.30am when he was born I was on the drip and it was horrendous from about 2am - 6.30am. Also had shoulder dystocia on delivery. Anyway we are all fine now but I feel like I never want to go through labour again. Am so jealous of women that have lovely home births or quick deliveries 20 mins after arriving at hospital! ( like my neighbour!). Just shows how different each labour is and there is no set experience or way you should feel.

Wow that was quite therapeutic writing that!

YellowWellies · 12/11/2012 19:11

Something which really reassured me about my delivery and said by one of the midwives - was it might well be that I have an odd shaped pelvis and junior had to come out back to back to have made it. It's a fecker if that is the case but makes biological sense I guess - better a painful labour than a stuck baby (ok Jonas was both!!!!). I too found the after pains really brutal and somehow more scary as at least with labour I knew each contraction was one step closer to meeting my baby - I worried with afterpains that I was about to have a big bleed like my sis did. Which I didn't. I was also off the planet after the birth so was tripping out about the pains too....

I'm envious of those with sneeze births but am damn proud of our epic delivery and figure if I can do that even once I can do ANYTHING. It also made me v glad to be here in a country with modern medicine.

blonderthanred · 12/11/2012 19:13

Mine is very unhappy too, heartbreaking as not sure what's wrong or what to do. Little high pitched sudden cries. Trying to wind him, couple of burps and farts but he just wants to eat. He's stuffing his hands in his mouth. My mum suggested the boiled water which I thought odd but if your mw said it too Horsey maybe worth a try?

YellowWellies · 12/11/2012 19:18

We get high pitched little squeaky cries too - trapped wind according to our mw. Our wee boy is a total bugger to wind - he hangs on to his farts so tightly....

DebussyHead · 12/11/2012 19:19

That's a good way of looking at it YellowWellies, also made me feel so grateful to live in a country with nhs and not the US where so many think Obamacare is 'European socialism we don't want'

Jims · 12/11/2012 19:23

debussy that sounds like you did really well through all that. I was petrified fred was going to stay back to back like he'd been throughout most of my pregnancy but i was lucky he had space to turn.

Congrats to everyone else with new babies, i can't keep up with them all! Other than to say i'm glad you got your home birth too chunky

i'm starting to have it all come back to me about how much giving birth takes out of you. I did a 10 min walk to the shop yesterdy and got overtaken by an oap with a stick!

On the plus side breast feeding is going better this time and he's not refusing to go on without shields like last time which was a bit stressful. This does mean i'm getting sore nipples too as i think we need to work on the latch still. Hmm. And i think he's going to have reflux like the first too, he's already quite sicky. The tumble drier is going to get a lot more use with a sicky winter baby!

horseylady · 12/11/2012 19:27

We too get the same squeals!! Trapped wind apparently. Think I'd rather he was older before giving him water?! Apparently eating constantly is them trying to clear it?! God knows!!

Yw I know what you mean about being able to do anything now. Apart from give birth again!! The same was said about my pelvis (or was it cervix?!) anyway were both alive so who cares. In other countries we'd be dead. We survived thanks to modern medicine and good drs. Just very very jealous of those easy labours!

YellowWellies · 12/11/2012 19:30

Hmmm reflux Jims my sis' two are prone to that - Jonas poohs are green and vinegary according to the mw it's just him fighting a bug (probably from his wee cousin) but my sister is worrying me that it could be a sign of reflux. I really don't want to go through reflux hell!!! Anyone else have any clues? It's not jaundice - as he's pretty much over that now.

Evilwater · 12/11/2012 19:53

Baby evil is very windy, I'm using infacol. I'll try the water to get the wind up.
Thanks for the tip.
Evil

blonderthanred · 12/11/2012 20:08

It seems like everyone has very windy babies today! I wonder if he has taking in air because of the sucking on his fingers/fists? My mum also gives him her knuckle to suck to soothe him but I'm wondering if it's a good idea?

Don't really want to medicate but I have a feeling we are in for a second very long night.

Izzybuzzybuzzybees · 12/11/2012 20:46

I too have a windy baby. He is BF on demand but feeds last a ridiculous time, were talking an hour if he takes both sides!

I had a not great birth, induced by ARM and drip. Then episiotomy or 2bd degree tear depending on which part of my notes you read. Cord round babys neck followed by retained placenta. Had to consent to manual removal in theatre with spinal epidural but then had PPH and lost over 2 litres of blood and crash team called, managed to deliver placenta without going to theatre tho. I was raging at the thought of needing epidural after delivering with gas and air and tens. I had no real warnings of contractions coming as they just hit full whack so midwife said I must have high pain threshold and that I probably didn't feel the build up.

Feeding is going ok..ish. nipples sore at times and I need to work on latch a lot. However we did manage to feed at the dinner table while I ate spaghetti meatballs one handed! Trying to get to BF group at the hospital tomorrow as didn't manage the one today :(

Thechick · 12/11/2012 20:50

I thought the hand sucking was a way for the babies to comfort themselves.
I think my LO is windy, pulling the knees up when crying is a sign isn't it? He does that. Does infacol work. I thought it was for colic or is it the same thing?. And reflux is when they vomit a little after feeding, right? I don't remember any of this stuff from ds1. Maybe I do need to buy a book of some kind, going to consult dr google right now!!

daisychain76 · 12/11/2012 21:31

Thechick you can use infacol for wind as well as colic ~ it has def made a difference to baby H. Seem to think refluxx ismore thann just a little sick. Hvv told me boys are more prone tto it Sad.

Conngrats debussey. Sorry to everyone who had a bad experience. I had a really intense back labour with ds1 and l waas peetrified of it happening again but dd came in 52 mins with just period type pains so you just never can tell. This time was very scary (one mw after told me she thought the way it was done was cruel) but as yw says it made me appreciate the nhs and modern medicine
