Arghhhhh! Just lost a post mid-way through!!!. Wanted to wish TESSA A V. happy 3rd birthday - you are a very lucky girl! RODEO: lol at apple purree jar; I giove yoou a week . Thought you dealt with little boy situation admirably, and that it's far better to openly discuss disabilities etc than to brush them under the carpet. Had rather embarrassing situation with dds last week though, when (after chatting to a blind couple on the bus who we see everywhere with their guidedogs (and feeling so 'right on' as my dds calmly nodded as we discussed what 'blind' meant) dd1 loudly cam out with 'well why don't they just open their eyes properly then they will see where they're going and not bump into things' . Then we had the whole closing their eyes while walking up the hill, bumping into lamposts etc!!! Have a great time at your theme park today (is it just you and the 3 of them, or is your DP off too?). I have all 3 today, and they are driving me mad already! We're braving the bus into town...gulp!!
Well, going to sort out a 'debate' about the who the toy spider belongs to .
Speak later!
Diege

BEKsmum · 22/02/2006 11:01

Busy sorry didn't realise it was Alex's B'day too - hope he has a great day and doesn't burst all the balloons in the first 5 minutes!!! BEKs

BEKsmum · 22/02/2006 11:08

Diege, I've just read your post and nearly fell off the chair laughing, how hilarious I bet you wished the ground would open up and swallow you didn't you

Rodeo I think you managed the situation with Bella perfectly, it's really hard to know what to say though isn't it.

Ben noticed that people are different colours the other week, but thankfully we were at home, he couldn't tell the difference between Ainsley Harriot and Andi Peters until I said one had hair and the other didn't!!!
Needless to say I did try to explain why people are different colours but I don't think he really got it.

Right best go and sort out a whinging Thomas, speak to you all later Beks

Belated Birthday Wishes to the LO's.

Thanks for advice. Z took a 4oz top up at bedtime (10.45pm) and slept until 5.45am which was great. Strange thing is..the more sleep I have the more tired I feel during the day

Something else, Z often wakes up during his daytime naps screaming and then I 'sshhhh' him or 'pat' him back to sleep and he then seems fine. Sometimes he makes little shrieking noises when he's asleep but when I go over to see what's wrong he's fast asleep. Anyone else experience this?

Z is also pushing himself off changing mat now and kicking so hard think he is going to hurt his heels. No more quick nappy change on the table!

x

goldenoldie · 22/02/2006 19:18

ChaCha - Ezra is the same. he sometimes screams out in his sleep and when i rush over, he is still sound asleep? Bad dreams maybe?

browniechick · 22/02/2006 20:29

Hi All - no posts for the last couple of days - have had nightmare and frightening 24 hours. Briefly - woke up yesterday morning, around 5:15am, realising T hadn't woken for feed - DH went in to check on him (his turn for night feed)and found T awake, but seeming to struggle for breath He got him up, and his cry sounded strained... we changed his nappy and he really didn't seem right, so we bundled him in the car and went off to the A&E dept. To cut a long story short, it turns out he has croup - we spent 11 hours at the hospital (7 on the childrens ward), and he was given som mild steriod medication (and we were sent home with the second dose). He seems better than he was, but the sound is soo frightening, as they appear to be really struggling to breathe . He is feeding ok (although being abit more sicky than usual - as he has since Saturday, which I guess was the first sign of him being pooly), and as someone else said, he is weeing and pooing ok (the dr also asked the same question!!) Anyway, fingers crossed he will just get better and better......

Chacha - T also has episodes of crying and making noises in his sleep - I rush over to him, and he is fast asleep - just me awake then!!!! He is still doing it now, even with no voice!!

Anyway, am hoping for better nights sleep tonight - spent last night on floor in sleeping bag in T's room - he slept from 8 till 6 - but Mummy didn't sleep so well!! Anyway - it's daddys turn tonight, so mummy gets the big bed all to herself!!

Goodnight all, and hope all those with birthdays (alex & Tessa?) had good ones.
To anyone that may be involved in Guiding or Scouting (not sure if any of you are???) Happy Thinking Day (You'll know what I mean)

Brownie & a slightly hoarse Thomas xx

Diege · 22/02/2006 20:50

Brownie what a nightmare for you, DH and Thomas . Thankfully it seems like you have been looked after really well by the NHS, and seems like you are on top of the croup with the medication. You deserve a night in the big bed tonight! .
CHACHA: totally agree, the more sleep you have, the more you want (like most things in life!). I'm getting between 6 qand 7 hours a night, but to be honest, felt better on 4/5 (oh moan moan...are we ever happy !). Libby is a sleep shrieker too - i've watched her face sometimes when she does it, and it alternates from beaming grin to crumpled, end-of-the world expression in a few seconds. Yes, perhaps it is a dream!
Fairly successful half-term day out today (sneaked in a bit of shopping , but boy will it be easier when I can drive! Just 2 of them tommorrow, so a breeze .
Speak later, and hope the birthday girl and boy had the best of times,
Diege

JenJam · 22/02/2006 21:49

brownie, that's awful. it made me shudder to read your post. i would be frantic if that happened. glad he's now on the mend, jen

BEKsmum · 22/02/2006 22:06

Brownie sorry to hear that Thomas is so unwell, hope he is on the mend now and that you can get some rest tonight. Beks

ChaCha · 22/02/2006 22:22

Reassuring to know other LO's are doing the same in their sleep. Thanks for that.

Browniechick - Sorry to hear about T. The initial not knowing what's wrong is frightening (especially that drive to A&E) but a welcome relief when they're diagnosed and discharged! Hope that you catch up on your sleep and that T is on the mend. Ignorant as I am, didn't know what croup was although i'd heard of it before. Did a google and am clued up now. Sweet dreams hopefully!

A few more questions please: What to do when the LO falls asleep on your shoulder when your just about to wind him? And i mean sleep! When Z has his bigger top up feed he looks like he's been in at the peace pipe and I don't know if i should really wake him to wind him IYSWIM? What do you do?
Have noticed that Z makes a croaky sound mainly when lying down. Thought this might be wind but nothing comes up. Kind of like a hoarse 'guzzly' sound..i'm not worried about it but wondered if this too is something you've experienced?

Thanks as always. DH is obviously looking for me now, can hear him talking to Z 'Where is mummy? She's getting the laundry basket....mummy?'
LOL x

Thanks all.

Diege · 22/02/2006 22:55

Just a quikie as I'm on my way up those stairs!
CHACHA: if Z is upright on your shoulder, I would assume he would burb anyway, but then you probably mean he's lying down? I'd wind anyway, over the shoulder standing, as this wouldn't wake him. Do you normnally wake to wind (sorry if I've totally misinterpreted what you've asked info on - i'm a bit confused as I've never known winding to wake a baby!)Re: the noises, we have had this from day one, regardless of wind brought up. I think it's just them being babies and settling themselves/getting comfortable. If the wind's in there, it'll come out, even if they are lying down! Now get some rest woman and stop worrying!! BTW LOL about laundry basket!! .
Night night,
Diege .

beartime · 23/02/2006 07:23

ChaCha - Caleb's the same with the waking up thing tho' he doesn't go back to sleep so easily! I'm thinking about gettig some black out curtains to see if it helps - anyone had experience with them?

Poor brownie, I'm dreading him getting that. Have you been doing the steam thing?

Diege, Caleb never seems to let any wind out when he's asleep?

mamman · 23/02/2006 10:00

Hi
agree with all that croup is really scary, we havent ever had to go to A&E but have spend a few hours in a steamed up bathroom with no1.

Beartime - we have a black out blind in the nursery which is useless and black out linings on curtains in toddlers room which are perfect.

Still struggling with sleep - hoping its a growth phase? DD is 5.2kg yesterday I think someone asked her weight) - is she just too small to go through the night?? anyway I have started trying to fit in more feeds during the day and using a dummy at night to get the feeds at least 3 hours. She eventually isnt happy even with dummy and has to be fed . Also she is not as good a sucker as DS - perhaps she isnt getting enough - very tempted by the top idea that seems to be popular with the rest of you.

Anyone else dreading going back to work? Im thinking of taking more than the 6mo I said I would (pennies permitting).

Diege · 23/02/2006 10:36

Morning everyone! Gearing up for my driving lesson, and it's raining!! Arghhhh, that means WINDSCREEN WIPERS!!! Had the dreaded smear this morning, but out of the way now. Have to have them 6 monthly because of previous abnormalities, so fingers crossed this one is ok (actually, getting babies out of the way asap was one of my consultant's suggestions, because of my dodgy cervix )
BEARTIME: We have backout blinds which do the job ok, but are forever breaking. Agree with
MAMMAN linings might be just as good, if not better perhaps? I even know someone who pegs up black bin bags, but don;t think this is a particularly good look myself !
MAMMAN: can only work in old money, so not sure what 5.2kg is . I think it is to do with weight more than age, (121b is the figure I've seen), but would say that even with this, there must be massive variations; ie, some tiny newborns sleep through, and other hefty bubs refuse to). I'ver always tried the old bottle of water trick in middle of night when I think they are waking out of habit, though it's never worked - usually just gradually reduce amount so they take more in day. When they get to 6 months and are still waking, the advice here is to dilute night feeds.
Well, a day of washing ahead, as when I went in to check on dd2 last night she had been sick EVERYWHERE!!! Nice...
Diege

tex111 · 23/02/2006 11:33

Hi all. Poorly house here. Tobes, Rosie and I are all sick now and DH is in Dublin. Luckily he'll be back tonight so hopefully I can get some sleep. I seemed to be in perpetual motion all last night either wiping bottoms or cleaning up sick. Poor Tobes has started having a high fever too. BEKS, how long did the last with you guys? I'm hoping we're better by the weekend.

Brownie, croup is very scary. The first time Tobes has it NHS Direct insisted on an ambulance to A&E after listening to him breathe on the phone. I was terrified even though I've had lots of experience with the illness. My brother and I used to get it all the time. Tobes still gets it, usually at the end of another illness, but we've learned that a humidifier and cracking his window help him. Sometimes a warm or cold drink helps too. Sounds like you're hospital is great. We've always had to take Tobes back for further doses of the steroids. Very nice that you don't have to make that journey twice. Hope T is feeling lots better.

I've finally broken down and bought a double stroller. It's really just for long days out when Tobes gets tired. Our trip to the Science Museum a couple of weeks ago would've been much easier if I'd had a double stroller. I got a Marco Sky L, sounds like some kind of spaceship. It's just arrived so time to go play with the new stroller!

Londoner · 23/02/2006 12:57

tex and brownie sorry to hear about your poorly little ones- hope things improve quickly...hang in there.
belated but BIG b.day wishes to tessa and alex!
struggling away here i'm afraid, don't even seem to be keeping head above water re:chores etc....my washing pile just keeps getting bigger, you know? but i've been here b4 so am just doing the best i can and trust things will ease off soon.
Spring is on it's way and that's always a great thing as the days are getting lighter and all the bulbs are pushing through the earth, doesn't it make you feel good?
Elizabeth is a little dream baby and although feel like poo myself, feel big joy whenever I look at her ...and she's a great hugger too.
Am going out to dinner 2morrow with dh and E to v.posh/trendy restaurant and can't for the life of me visualise it or imagine what i can poss wear....it's all in the wash pile.....fingers r crossed for a surge of energy/brainwave.....
hope you're all okay and sending lots of spring your way

browniechick · 23/02/2006 15:18

Hi - thanks all for messages of well-being and empathy re Thomas and his croup. I slept ok in the big bed last night - although still woke each time I heard him, but fe;t reassured that DH was on his floor and thus v close if needed. He seems to be much improved today - almost back to normal feeding pattern, and the crying is getting less (not used to baby that cries - he usually only cries if he is over tired, in pain or mega hungry!) He has been gurgling a bit today and playing with some of his toys, and we have had lots of smiles - so I trust that he is on the mend.
Yes hospital was good, thankful we didn't have to go back to get second dose of steriod, as he needed it all 11pm that night, so would have had to wake him up and cart him off to the hospital!! Thankfully they let us administer at home (perhaps because they had split the dose in 2?) as it was he had it half asleep - wasn't going to wake him up, gently shot it in the side of his mouth in small stages, then gave him his dummy to ensure he swallowed it all - worked well!
Beartime - had the kitchen filled with steam yesterday afternoon - boiled pans of water and kept putting kettle on and holding switch down! Not sure it made that much difference, but at least we tried! Also when he had his bath last night, I had a shower and washed my hair at the same time, so there was extra steam in the bathroom.
Tex - have now begun to consider buying a humidifier, especially if he may become prone to getting croup?
ChaCha - Thomas has often made gurgling or slight "snoring" type noises in his sleep. He has been a bit snuffly since birth - time of year apparently - this is obviously worse at the moment due to the croup - he sounds like an old man when he goes to sleep - bless him!
Diege - lol about rain & thus windscreen wipers!!! When I learned to drive, my lessons were always at night - so had to deal with hynotising headlights coming the other way! I will not drive towards them, I will not drive towards them.......!!!!!

Brownie & an improving Thomas

Busyalexsmummy · 23/02/2006 15:25

Hi all, Alex had a good day yesterday, his nan bought him a set of jcb tools, so ever since hes been running around shouting "mummy! LOOK!!,Im fixing it!!" ! bless
have decided that its time for the dreaded potty training to begin, was going to leave it till the summer, but the last 3 weeks he is showing more and more signs that hes ready so im going to give it ago and see what happens.

Was really that all his aunties and uncles forgot his birthday and cant wait till the day hes talking and can ring them up and give them a massive guilt trip about forgetting hahaha!

gotta go, ebaying to do! x

Rodeo · 23/02/2006 21:11

It has been quiet on here!

Oh all these poorly babes, Brownie, poor you & T - how scary, hope it goes soon. J has also been snuffly since birth, my mum's always asking me if she's got a cold, but it's just the way she is. She sounds like a hedgehog

Oh Diege/Tex - Not sicky washing. Oh god, there's nothing worse! What to do with the chunks, that's my dilemma! Bath, Bin, outside hose??? Have tried putting it straight through machine but the bigger bits just stick to everything and fly everywhere when you pull the load out! Sorry that's gross I bet you both manage better than me anyway! Hope you are all better soon anyway

Diege, LOL, a week??!! No I gave in yesterday and gave her a third of the teeny jar and she loved it She polished most of the rest it off tonight!

Twinlakes was fab! So much so we went again with dp today, but now I'm knackered!! And my muscles are killing, oooowwwwww.....

Glad Tessa and Alex had lovely birthdays

Londoner have a great time out tomorrow, you're dh will think you look lovely whatever you wear

OP posts:
goldenoldie · 23/02/2006 21:26

Hope all the poorly mummies and babies are better soon.

Mamam - I'm looking forward to going back to work. It's a lot easier than being at home with babies! Naughty mummy!

Diege - you've reminded me about having a smear. The last time I had one was about 5 years ago.

Karmamother · 23/02/2006 21:28

Hi all.
Have tried to catch up with as much as possible but it was taking too long!

Browniechick, glad that Thomas is ok, it must have been really scary.

Tesasmum/tex, thanks for the info on signing. The book I bought is called "Baby Signs". At first I didn't see the need to teach the signs for giraffe or elephant but I can see how it improves storytelling or trips to the zoo or singing songs. Can't wait to start using it.

Beksmum, I was interested to read about your PND this time. Unfortunately, I've definately got it again this time. I've been taking SJW but I'm not sure it's making much difference. Things came to a head last night when I lost it, big style. I have a GP appt next week & I'm seeing the HV afterwards. I thought I was doing ok but I have to admit I'm not. Last time, it started around 3 months & I started treatment at 4 months. I really don't want to go back on the happy pills but I can't let this break up this relationship like it did last time. DP was fantastic yesterday, he just didn't realise how bad I felt. What made it worse was my DS witnessed mummy going a bit loopy which made me feel a million times worse. Poor thing. Feel better today, slightly calmer (or should that be Karma?) I will not let this get the better of me!!!
Thanks for listening.

Oops, nearly forgot. Welcome Candiemom & Mamman. Nova's right, we are officially the nicest on MN!!
