Happy new year!

Sorry for the rubbish title but wanted to get the new thread underway. Let's close the door on some of the sad events of 2011 and look forward to a better year in 2012.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Beans that sounds anazing, but why oh why have I never heard of garlic oil! I am off to the shops to get me a vat of it tomorrow. In what other recipes do you use garlic oil Beans? Beans I hope you understand ds2 didn't actually read the in flight magazine on the plane, just looked at the pictures.

I was just thinking maybe phonics has been introduced because the US & UK starts reading at 4 now. I was explain changing the sounds of vowels in different words, and silent letters, and he was fine with it but he is 6, I think a 4 year would find it difficult to understand because of the black & white -ness of that developmental stage.

Jam, you dirty stop out.

VagolaJahooli · 05/02/2012 19:41

Oops forgot to say, no more snow here since Friday, but it's still bloody freezing so no meltage. Went ice skating today on a little canal near DS2's nursery, in the morning. Ds2 went mental with the cold so retreated to a friends house for hot chocolates and ollibollen (I don't want to explain what that is to you as simply telling you what it is will make you gain pounds). Ds1 & I went out for another skate on a little waterway near our house and ran into lots of his friends from school was very nice and felt very communal. We really need to get the boys some thermal underwear otherwise our ski trip at the end of month is not going to be fun, ds2 currently lasts about 15mins before meltdown.

Kayzr · 05/02/2012 20:33

I have come to have a grump so sorry.

My Mum doesn't like driving in snow, despite passing her test about 30 years ago. So she isn't keen on taking me to my scan. The buses are rubbish and I can get to the town I need to be in an hour and half early or half an hour late. There really isn't much to do there.

So I rang to see what the taxi's say and because there is some snow they are charging double the price. So about £30 for 8 miles.

I have got everything crossed that it will ok in the morning so Mum will happily drive me there.

Beans36 · 05/02/2012 21:16

Vag - I use garlic oil in loads of food. If I can't face chopping garlic I use the oil instead although it's not as punchy. Another yummy garlic tip, which is something everyone already knows, but I've only just discovered: garlic mash! Chuck in a couple of peeled cloves with the potatoes as they're boiling and mash them up as normally would. Yummers. More cloves=more garlic flavour. You can also just mash in an in-boiled clove but I find it toooooo strong and pungent. And farty.

Kayz - that's tough. I hope the snow melts for you tomorrow. Can hear it disappearing here. Drip drip. Makes me want a wee.

Beans36 · 05/02/2012 21:17

(I meant something everyone probably already knows. Doofus)

Kayzr · 06/02/2012 12:42

They scan was great and it's a girl!!!! GrinGrin

LadyThompson · 06/02/2012 12:44

Oh, that's lovely. How lovely to have a mix of genders. Have you told the boys they are getting a sister?

Kayzr · 06/02/2012 12:54

DS2 knows. DS1 knew it was probably a girl and isn't happy about it at all.

LadyThompson · 06/02/2012 13:17

Aww, when she is there I bet they will both love her.

Beans36 · 06/02/2012 13:34

WELL DONE KAYZ!!!

traceface · 06/02/2012 13:38

hola ladies Smile
Kayz hurray for a pink one! You can indulge your girlie side now Wink
on reading - I don't think P can read or write a single letter. In fact, she is rubbish at colouring and drawing - can't even do an identifiable eyes, nose, mouth! Should I be worried? I'd like a list of what a 3yr old should be able to do, but then I'd just worry if she couldn't do them! I can't remember what L learnt and when - in fact I can't remember whether she could read any words or write anything before she started school. She's now 7 and gallops through all sorts and particularly likes the encyclopoedia!
Sorry I'm not managing to keep up very well on here at the moment.
ZJ I'm glad your DH saw sense in the end! I hope you and indith and kayz are treading carefully in this slippy weather - don't want any falls with your precious loads Smile
Tis very white here due to snow and fog - I feel like my eyes aren't working properly!
jolly are you all better now in your home? Has the wave of vom passed?
P has gooey eyes today Sad.
Well I've stepped up to my slightly higher dose of my new pills - still only at a third of the dose I'm aiming at. I can feel that I'm taking them - but not in a good way! I generally feel fuzzy-headed and dizzy but also am being much more clumsy than normal and feel like my heart is skipping some beats. Anyway my CPN is keeping an eye on things. But more annoying (and probably not even related to my pills) is tinnitus in my right ear which is mega loud and sounds like a car engine is running the whole time! grrrrr!
We had a really good viewing yesterday and I think they will come back for a second viewing - fingers crossed (again!)
beans are you called Beans because you love beans?
vag it's fab to have you back here - we missed you xxx
Rubes is quiet - and we've not heard from Trudes for yonks!

traceface · 06/02/2012 14:37

Ooh and LADYT I'm reading the tent, the bucket and me too!

VagolaJahooli · 06/02/2012 21:06

Gosh Trace thoseiside effects sound like they would be quite difficult to live with. Are you OK? Also DS2 doesn't draw faces either he kind of draws a vague circle for a face and adds a kind of long area for the body, well its still all scribble really. I'm sure ds1 was counting by now in Chinese and English but ds2 doesn't really do much of that. But he's a happy little thing and also at his nursery they pretty much play or do craft & gymnastics, whereas when ds1 started nursery school in the UK he was doing stuff straight away.

So sad all the deaths from this cold, apparently 3 boys went missing here in NL aged 8&9 it is thought they may have broken through some ice on a lake.So sad.

LadyThompson · 07/02/2012 11:47

Is it Indith's interview today? The best of British if so.

Trace - maybe those side effects will subside after a while? That's often the case with drugs, isn't it? The Tent and the Bucket - I am not that far in but the bit about the porridgey hair is just SOOO gross, it really made me itch...I know the author vaguely, she is a close friend of a friend of mine.

That's terrible about those little boys going missing, Vag, how awful. The snow is largely slush here now, it's really slippy.

I am posting and dashing as I have an el stupido amount to do as usual.

Beans36 · 07/02/2012 19:38

Ooh yes, good luck Indith if it's today.

I am going out on the razzle tonight. WOOOHOOOOO! Well, kind of. Meeting up with three girls from uni for dinner. We're coming from around Saaarf London and having a gossip and a feed. Brill. Poor DH been to Cambs for work and got train. Was due to be back in London after lunch, but was delayed. Then his journey home will have taken 4 hours. And I refused to let him have the car because I needed it for work! Evil me!!!!!

Poor DD2 gave herself a nasty gash on her forehead at nursery today. Really not their fault, as she is into climbing and went onto a unit and fell onto a corner of another one. She's fine, but it's quite deep, but small. Poor little bird. Never mind. They were mortified. Called me straight away, but I didn't have to go and get her and she had one on one care all afternoon, which she loved! Had no sleep all day and I put her to bed at 6.10 after she went feral again. Out like a light. Brilliant. Will get DH to check on her regularly to see if she's doing ok. Have clipped her hair back while she's sleeping on her back and will undo it last thing tonight. Cut is at front of hairline.

I've been SO organised today. Did 2.5 hours work this morning (£30, thank you!) and then came home and did wash after wash after wash, hoovered upstairs, cleaned both bathrooms and downstairs loo. And cleared out our outdoor wear cupboard, which I haven't done since we moved in. Got rid of a load of stuff and boxed up. Had in DD1's little bear suit from when she was wee. Made me quite nostalgic. Still don't think I want another one though...

Ho hum. Must go and finish up my beer ready for a few drinks later. Am getting a cab there and bus home, so can booze a bit. Whoop!

Love to you all.

xxxx

Beans36 · 07/02/2012 19:39

Vag - I've only just properly read your post. Oh so sad. I feel so gutted. Just imagine how their parents must feel. Weep.

WG - did your DH do the telly today as per FB???

JollyBear · 07/02/2012 20:11

Hello everyone,

Ooh I think it was indith's interview. Well remembered LadyT. Hope it went well!

trace Thanks for asking. We're all vomit free and DD2 has done 2 days at nursery. She seems to love it so far. No crying at drop off. Any news on your house viewers?

beans Very industrious! Poor DD2, hope her head isn't too sore tomorrow.

Lovely news kayz, glad she sat still this time.

Very interesting phonic chat. I find it all very confusing. DD1 pointed to a Y in the newspaper yesterday and said, 'that is in my name, what is it'. So I said Y (like why) but then corrected myself a bit and said it is also Y like -i, so it sounded like the end of her name. I'd confused myself by the end of that chat.

I'm shattered. DD2 hasn't slept through since she was ill and last night DD1 joined the party in our bed. I had to get out (with DD2) and go in the spare room after 2 hours as I was just not getting any sleep. I was exhausted at work today. Why would they stop sleeping when I'm back at work?! I shouldn't moan I know, they've been fine up to now.

Indith · 08/02/2012 09:40

Interview tommorrow. Can't wait until it is over so I can relax. I'm so stressed, more about going into labour than interview. Every twinge freaks me out.

I thought I had the tummy bug the dcs had the other week yesterday but I think it is just stress. Lots of cramps and going to the loo and morning sickness type feeling.

Will catch up properly on Friday. Must make most of time with dd in nursery and do last min reading/thought collecting.

JamInMyWellies · 08/02/2012 11:05

At least if you do go into labor you are in the right place.

Good Luck!

ZuleikaJambiere · 08/02/2012 16:44

All the best for tomorrow Indith, keep those legs crossed! Do you have far to travel, or is it close to home?

Lovely to hear your DD finally cooperated with the scan Kayz, how sweet to have a little girl joining the family Smile. Friends of mine had their 3rd DC last year, a little girl. Their DS (middle child) wasn?t happy to hear he was going to have another sister, and his father?s argument that when he was 18 he?d have a house full of 21 year old girls and 16 year old girls visiting his sisters and he would be in his element didn?t go down well with a toddler!

I have been following this talk of reading with fascination (and keeping well out, as it is beyond me ? I don?t even know which system DDs pre-school/school uses, although I should find out). I?m confused already, as DD has come home having learnt the alphabet song (ay, bee, cee, dee etc) but then points out ?eh? for her name and ?muh? for Mummy etc ? so I don?t even know which version of letters to use with her. She has always loved books, but now she?s taken to either describing the pictures or memorising the books and reciting them back to me ? it?s lovely to see her so involved, but I?m not convinced it will actually help her to read, as she thinks she?s reading at the moment. I?ll have to have a chat with school at some point to find out more. I can?t actually remember how I learnt to read myself, in order to pass that on (which is probably good, as it will be horrendously out of date now, I?m sure), but I do remember learning to write ? we had ?roll and write?, where there was a marble and the letter was on a slight tilt so that the marble rolled round it in the way you should write it. I loved playing with all the letters and copying them. Does anyone else remember those? Now numbers, I am looking forward to helping her with and I did push her quite a bit to spot the right numbers on her advent calendar. She does make me laugh, as there is a dressing up area in her classroom, and more often than not she is Snow White when I pick her up and the rest of the class are all in normal uniform ? last week she was sat earnestly joining in a group discussion when I arrived, yet again in the full regalia and looking so out of place but so happy Grin

Hurrah for pants LadyT (O's, not yours, although I'm sure your pants deserve a hurrah too!) ? we used bribery for DD, and have had to return to it for hand washing now, as she?s got bored of all of that

How is your sister doing this week Spot? I hope she and the baby are still there and getting lots of rest

Does DS1 feel like he is behind the rest of the class Vaj, or is it just his teacher?s comments? I hate him to be aware that he's behind Sad. From what you tell us, he seems such a bright little thing, surely he?ll catch up. And he gained so much from seeing his family that it outweighs a couple of weeks of schooling at this age

Those side effects sound tough to deal with Trace, how is the tiredness that you were struggling with at first? And can you feel any difference your mood yet? (although with all that going on, I doubt I?d be able to). Any news on a second viewing?

Glad you?re all well again Jolly, but a bit of sleep would help too, wouldn?t it? I remember being really chuffed that DD starting sleeping through about 6 weeks before I went back to work and then being really dischuffed when she stopped again after a couple of weeks at work. I hoped it was maybe something to do with having a different routine etc, but suspect it was just because she can be a little so and so if she wants! But if J has always been so good, I bet it?s just the after effects of the bug

I have been happily browsing cookery books, as I?ve decided (assuming nothing or nobody else crops up) that DD and I are going to make the gooiest, stickiest chocolate cake for my birthday this weekend. But I have given myself massive chocolate cravings now from looking at all the pictures and the only chocs we have in the house are chocolate raisins, far too healthy and disappointing for what I need right now!

VagolaJahooli · 08/02/2012 19:12

Poor DS1 was sick and off school today, so it was a DVDs & sofa day. By the this evening DS2 was going a bit stir crazy, but as they were quite contained I got a far bit of housework done.

I asked DS1 about feeling a bit behind in school, mainly because an assistent teacher who helps out with his class came up to me after school with his list of words (he gets a list of words and has to pronounce 25 of them correctly in a minute). She said in front of him, "he needs to do this at home he is behind everyone else". I asked him if that upset him and he said no, and it really didn't looked like it bothered him. To be fair we have always stressed the importance of effort, & not being able to do something now just means he practices and tries harder until he eventually can, so he seems to be taking this as a challenge he has to put his effort into. Anyway, I took HER list of words home and he read out 31 in a minute! I was all set to proudly tell his teacher this morning when he woke up last night ill.

Indith cross your legs.

Spot where are you?

Any news on the viewung

JollyBear · 08/02/2012 20:01

ZJ Have you got Nigella's Kitchen? There is a divine chocolate cake in there. I'll copy it out if you are interested. L and I made chocolate biscuits from that book today. They are yummy!

Sorry to hear DS1 has been poorly Vag. It was a bit naughty of the assistant to say he was behind in front of him. I don't think they are taking account of things he has learnt from the trip. Plus it must be harder to learn in dutch if his parents aren't fluent.

Good luck Indith. A good interview tip is to think of three things you want to get across. You can draw from them during the interview questions and you can use it in a final summary/ anything else you'd like to say. I find it a useful strategy.

ZuleikaJambiere · 08/02/2012 20:54

I don't have that book Jolly, but the current leader is her chocolate brownies from 'how to be a domestic goddess'. If it's not too long (some of her recipes go on for ever!) then could you send it? Thanks

That seems very thoughtless of DS1s teacher Vaj, but good on your him on knowing what's important and not worrying about it

VagolaJahooli · 08/02/2012 21:09

Jolly I made a chocolate torte once which was basically just eggs whites, chocolate, sugar and and butter here it is really simple. Ignore the fennel, it is nice and an interesting addition but not necessary. I actually found the recipe when I was looking for recipes with fennel. Also I served it with mascapone cheese instead of creme fraiche because...well it's yummy.

VagolaJahooli · 08/02/2012 21:24

DH wants to take the boys to the Star wars that us coming out in 3 D at the movies. I like Star Wars but I'm a little worried it's too violent for them. He sneakily got them into transformers and has shown them parts from the movies on YouTube. He has found some forums with parents saying their kids were fine watching the movies. I'm a bit against kids seeing violence as I think it desensitizes them to violence, but he wants to take them. Have any of you ladies had yours watching any of the star wars movies?
